“Plain, redheaded, and freckled John has nothing going for him, except there's one thing he's proud of—he's best friends with the two popular and mischievous twins Jekyll and Hyde. Jekyll (the calm and collected older brother) and Hyde (the cheerful younger brother) love switching places, and John is the only one who can tell them apart. But when the pair is fragmented by an untimely death, one twin is left alone without his “other self” by his side. The only question is—is he Jekyll, or is he Hyde?” (Yen Press)

Brian Helgeland's 2001 film "A Knight's Tale" is based on the first of the Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, but it has as much to do with 14th-century medieval literature as "Wayne's World." The film features characters singing Queen songs and one of the characters invents the Nike "swoop" as a brand for her armor. The story involves William Thatcher (Heath Ledger) a handsome young cove who aims to win jousting tournaments and be welcomed as one of the king's knights. It's a raucous, lightweight, silly movie that is deeply beloved by a very specific age group, that is: those who were between 15 and 17 in May of 2001.
It also depicted Ledger at the height of his heartthrob powers, as well as Paul Bettany (as Chaucer), Rufus Sewell as the villain, Shannyn Sossamon as Ledger's would-be paramour, and a trio of brilliant comedian sidekicks in Mark Addy, Laura Fraser, and Alan Tudyk.

Arr you ready to walk the plank into some sexy, swashbuckling pirate action? Well, then you’re about as lucky as a treasure chest full of gold coins, because all four seasons of Black Sails are now streaming on Netflix.
The historical adventure drama, which originally ran on Starz from 2014 to 2017, hails from creators Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine. Black Sails combines characters from Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island with real historical figures and events to make an action-packed prequel to the classic 1883 adventure novel.
The pilot episode is directed by Neil Marshall, who also helmed Game of Thrones’ famous nautical battle episode “Blackwater,” which should give you some idea of what Black Sails is like. And action movie maestro Michael Bay is one of the series’ executive producers, which should definitely give you a sense of its scale. It’s an ambitious show...

On the 1966 "Star Trek" episode "The Enemy Within," Captain Kirk (played by one-time /Film writer William Shatner) beams up from a geological research mission covered in a rare magnetic dust. The dust causes a glitch in the Enterprise's transporter, resulting in Kirk bifurcating into two separate beings. The first Kirk to beam up contains all of Kirk's intelligence and rationality, while the second Kirk -- arriving a few moments later -- contains all of his aggression or anger. With a "good" captain and an "evil" captain on board the Enterprise, mayhem ensues.
By the end of the episode, both Kirks must face off, and then, naturally, reunite. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) points out that Kirk cannot be an effective captain without his irrational rage and aggression; as a gentle person, he's not complete. The "evil" Kirk is a madman but he's also a vital part of Kirk's core being. "The Enemy...

“Always be two steps ahead,” repeatedly says Rachel Hyde, the famous alter ego of the namesake character in Hammer Studios’ “Doctor Jekyll.” The film’s director, Joe Stephenson, and his screenwriter Dan Kelly-Mulhern don’t take her advice, and it’s much to the detriment of their contemporary adaptation of the 1886 Robert Louis Stevenson novella, which can’t decide singularly what Jekyll’s transformation is a metaphor for. All volunteered options are either obvious or severely undercooked. Though Stephenson offers plenty of suitably spooky imagery, and importantly finds a more-than-game collaborator in Izzard as both the good and evil doctor, “Doctor Jekyll” is meandering and empty, an update with neither enough loyalty to its source material or imagination to make its departures meaningful.
The film stars Scott Chambers as Rob Stevenson, a just-released ex-convict whose brother Ewan (Morgan Watkins) secures him a job “providing care” for Dr. Nina Jekyll (Izzard...

Eddie Izzard stars in this gender-flipped reboot of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic horror story. Produced by the resurrected Hammer Studio, it’s creepy and atmospheric, but altogether too restrained, when it should have been allowed to run riot.
A newspaper headline at the beginning of Doctor Jekyll states that “Trans CEO Nina Jekyll” (Eddie Izzard), the head of a large pharmaceutical corporation, has become a recluse, disappearing from the public eye due to health issues. In fact, she’s holed up at a lavish British mansion, where her no-nonsense housekeeper Poole (Lindsay Duncan) has been trying to hire a live-in care assistant to assist Nina with taking her medication and various other duties.

Review: Founded in 1934, the Hammer film production company became very popular when it started releasing horror films in the mid-1950s. From that point through the early ‘70s, Hammer was one of the biggest names in horror… but then they found it hard to compete with the big horror films of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, and things gradually fell apart for them. In 1979, the company went into liquidation. Attempts to revive the Hammer brand began in 2008, and we’ve seen some notable releases from the company in recent years: Let Me In, The Resident, The Woman in Black, and The Lodge among them.

“I’ve seen Paris, France, and Paris, Paramount Pictures,” Ernst Lubitsch said, or so they say, “and on the whole I prefer Paris, Paramount Pictures.”
The great director’s preference for the Hollywood city of lights over the French one expresses a common enough affinity for illusion over reality, but the studio in question was not chosen for alliteration alone. If gritty Warner Bros. specialized in mean streets and threadbare apartments and glitzy MGM spent big on grand hotels and emerald cities, Paramount transported moviegoers into realms of dreamy exoticism, allegedly set in Vienna, Budapest or St. Petersburg, but conjured with better-than-the-original costuming, set design, lighting and dialogue. In an age before jumbo jets, who was to quibble over verisimilitude?

As Italian director Garrone steps onto the Academy Awards red carpet on March 10 with Best International Feature Film nominee Io Capitano, the real-life skipper who part inspired the drama will be watching and rooting for the film from afar.
West African born Fofana Amara was just 15 years old when he successfully skippered a rickety boat carrying 250 people across the Mediterranean from the Libyan coast in July 2014, to arrive off the Sicilian port of Augusta.
Proudly declaring “Io, capitano” (“I’m the captain”) when the coast guard boarded the ship, the youngster was immediately slammed in jail on charges of human trafficking.
It was just one stage of Amara’s perilous journey from the Republic of Guinea to Italy, passing by Libya, which had begun when he was 14 years old.

Severin follows up their 2023 collection of Italian gothic titles with an essential second volume that brings together three films and a miniseries. Each work takes a very different approach to the gothic as both a visual aesthetic and a set of thematic preoccupations. The results range from virtually archetypal to resolutely revisionist. For this well-appointed set, Severin provides a veritable bounty of bonus materials: new restorations, alternate cuts, commentary tracks, cast and crew interviews, visual essays, even a soundtrack CD.
Antonio Margheriti’s Danza Macabra, from 1964, is one of the very best Italian gothic films. Black Sails premiered 10 years ago today on Starz. The pirate drama built a strong fan base over the course of its four seasons, one that’s still singing its praises today. In December, it was said that Black Sails would stream on Netflix starting January 1, 2024. As of the time of publication, it’s still not available on the streamer, causing confusion among fans. But star Toby Stephens is excited by the prospect nonetheless. Black Sails is a prequel set 20 years before the events of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel Treasure Island. It stars Stephens as Captain Flint, known throughout the West Indies for being the most brilliant, most feared of all the Golden Age pirates. It also stars Jessica Parker Kennedy as the sharp and seductive Max. The actors continue the nautical theme as Poseidon and Medusa in Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians, created by Black Sails...

When we recently compiled our list of science fiction movies based on true stories, one film that didn’t make the list was Christopher Nolan‘s Oppenheimer. After all, the technology behind the nuclear bomb can no longer be said to be undiscovered, sadly. Nonetheless, Oppenheimer remains the archetypal science fiction story—one about a mad scientist who devises a new machine that changes the world through terrible unforeseen consequences. He is an an American Prometheus, yes, but also a regular Yankee Frankenstein. More than that though, by ushering in the nuclear age, Oppenheimer may have lit the fuse on the genre of cinematic science fiction.

Robert Louis Stevenson’s horror novella The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is a legendary story that has been spooking audience since the 19th century.
Now Hammer Horror returns to the big screen with a modern-day adaptation of Stevenson’s work, can it transform into memorable version of the story?
Directed by Joe Stephenson, Doctor Jekyll revolves around young Rob, a drug addict who has just been released from prison. Eager to prove himself and also to earn visitation rights to his dying daughter, Rob is sent to be a caregiver for the reclusive billionaire Doctor Nina Jekyll. As the two bond, Rob starts to suspect that there is something not quite right about his new employer…
Casting Eddie Izzard as the two-sided eponymous anti-hero is the cleverest aspect of this film. The actress is having the best time in this gender-bent exploration of Stevenson’s novel.

Hope Dickson Leach may have moved the action of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic from London to Edinburgh, but she's stayed true to the gothic nature of the original. A film that started life as a hybrid theatre production with the National Theatre of Scotland, this is the tale of man and monster reflected through the eyes of lawyer Utterson (Lorn Macdonald). Rather than focusing on the transformation of the doctor (Henry Pettigrew) we all know so well, it's the increasingly power-mad Utterson's shift that holds sway. Dickson Leach uses the theatricality of the hybrid to strong stylistic effect and told us she relished returning to the source material saying she was "bewitched by the text". If...

It’s the final destination of the reimagining of the Robert Louis Stevenson that began as a hybrid theatre piece and then screened in cinemas. Her retelling, co-adapted with Vlad Butucea, offers a change from the usual sight of Dr Jekyll (Henry Pettigrew) growing fur and turning monstrous in his lab in favour of coming at the story more from Stevenson’s original perspective of lawyer Gabriel Utterson (Lorn Macdonald), who finds himself becoming increasingly morally compromised as the tale progresses. We can’t up with Dickson Leach to talk about creating the hybrid film with the National Theatre of Scotland and coming at it from a different angle after...

The Beatles‘ “Yellow Submarine” is, by far, the most famous song with Ringo Starr performing a lead vocal. In terms of popularity, it outshines all of his other Beatles songs, as well as the songs from his solo career. In a recent interview, Ringo revealed what he thinks of the song now. Surprisingly, “Yellow Submarine” was conceived as a more somber tune than it is today.
How Ringo Starr’s new song is connected to The Beatles’ ‘Yellow Submarine’
During a 2023 interview with Billboard, Ringo revealed he has frequent conversations with Paul. During one of those conversations, Ringo discussed his new EP, Rewind Forward. “We were Facetiming each other — we do that quite a bit — and I say, ‘I’m doing an EP. Write me a song,'” Ringo recalled. “And he said, ‘Ok.’ And he not only wrote it, he’s on bass, he’s singing on it. He’s all over it.

This article contains spoilers for Star Trek: Lower Decks, season four, episode eight
For all of its far-flung exploration, Star Trek has always been about debates between the different aspects of humanity. Usually, that took the form of the dynamic between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, a trio replicated in some form or another in nearly every series that followed.
But in one of its earliest episodes, The Original Series bypassed Spock and McCoy and kept it all on Kirk. Written by the legendary Richard Matheson, “The Enemy Within” saw Kirk split into two people after a transporter malfunction. One of the Kirks, sporting the traditional yellow top, operates solely on impulse, which leads him to do things like assault Yeoman Rand and pick fights. The other Kirk, wearing a fashionable green shirt with golden highlights, treats his crew well, but cannot make a decision, even with Sulu freezing on a planet below.

Director Joe Stephenson recently told Fangoria, “There’ve been over 100 cinematic adaptations of Stevenson’s novella, but there has never been a trans Dr. Jekyll. Hope Dickson Leach’s atmospheric adaptation of the classic thriller looks good but in rewriting the story, adds an unnecessary element of distraction
This atmospheric black and white adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s gothic classic from Hope Dickson Leach, the director of The Levelling, opens with a tremendous shiver of menace. In the dead of night, as an eerily inhuman singsong echoes on the soundtrack, a little girl walks along an alleyway. Something steps out of the shadows. From behind, it appears to be a man, a gentleman – in a top hat and exquisitely tailored shirt. But the way it moves, gliding like a predator towards the girl, is hardly human; then it savages her with the rotting teeth of an animal. Perhaps nothing else that follows quite lives up to this taste of evil.
Dickson Leach’s film adds to the pile of 120-plus screen versions of Jekyll and Hyde.

Since the publication of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in 1886 there have been over 120 adaptations of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella. The adaptations have changed and evolved to keep the story fresh; these include a Blaxploitation retelling, Dr Black and Mr Hyde, and Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde, where the good Doctor transforms into a woman. The latest reimagining of this classic is arguably its most diverse, as Jekyll and Hyde are both transgender women.

“It’s a mad way to make a film, and I’m not sure it’s not something I would rush into again,” director Hope Dickson Leach said of the process behind her latest feature, the Edinburgh competition title The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Leach, best known for her well-received debut, The Levelling, which debuted at Toronto in 2016, was approached by the National Theatre of Scotland during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic to create a hybrid film-theatre project that could engage audiences while health restrictions were still in place.
The result was a stage production of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, performed live at the Leith Theatre in Edinburgh by a troop of actors who were tracked around the venue by six cameras. The footage was mixed and edited live by Leach, who sat in an operating van outside the venue.

Appropriately the City of Edinburgh takes centre stage in this retelling of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella. Relocating the story to the Scottish capital Hope Dickinson Leach (The Levelling) is given free rein to explore all its gothic glory, to spin a tale of human behaviour and the inhumanity of the upper classes.
Going back to the source, our story concerns Gabriel Utterson (Lorn MacDonald), a solicitor of extremely modest means. Quiet and well-mannered he has all the hallmarks of a Victorian gentleman except the status itself. A drawback which he hopes his friendship with Doctor Henry Jekyll (Henry Pettigrew) could one day remedy. However, Jekyll is prone to strange behaviour, changing his will in favour of his assistant Mr Hyde, a man curiously linked to violent assaults and deaths throughout the city. As Utterson edges closer to the truth of the two men he finds his place in the city elevated by the wealthy,...

"Batman: The Animated Series" remains one of the most fondly remembered incarnations of the Dark Knight, with new fans still discovering it (and old fans revisiting it) on HBO Max. Writer Paul Dini and artist Bruce Timm spearheaded the creation of a cartoon that elevated the art form, with character designs, scripts, and voice acting that was head and shoulders above anything going on a the time. The show released 85 episodes on Fox between 1992 and 1995 and was revived and retooled in 1997 as "The New Batman Adventures" for 24 more episodes on the CW.
The animated series struck a more realistic tone (especially in the pre-"New Adventures" days), which means a lot of characters were powered down from their comic versions. For example, the episode "Zatanna" introduces the DC character by that name. While the Zatanna of the comics is a powerful spell-caster, this animated version is just a stage illusionist.

Director Joe Stephenson tells Fangoria, “There’ve been over 100 cinematic adaptations of Stevenson’s novella, but there has never been a trans Dr. Jekyll. There seem to be some assumptions that because Nina is a trans character, we are somehow going to make it about gender. That is not the case; the themes of our film are true to the original work.”
Check out your first look at Eddie Izzard in the new Doctor Jekyll movie below.

Paul McCartney and John Lennon were both inspired by surreal and colorful imagery and often incorporated these images into The Beatles‘ songs. The two were fans of Lewis Carroll, who is responsible for some of the most imaginative stories, such as Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. Their interest in Carroll can be heard in their songwriting, as Carroll’s writing inspired several Beatles songs.

“Yellow Submarine” was written by McCartney and Lennon, and featured contributions from Scottish musician Donovan. The Revolver track was The Beatles’ attempt at creating a children’s song, and Donovan said Alice in Wonderland was an inspiration for this.
“Children’s songs were easy for me because I had absorbed so much poetry,” he explained in a 2008 Goldmine interview. “My father had read me Robert Louis Stevenson,...

Long ago, before the Marvel Cinematic Universe's gargantuan interconnecting list of films and Disney+ shows, there existed Universal Television's "The Incredible Hulk" series. Although it seems quaint in comparison to today's mega-budget superhero fare, Kenneth Johnson's science-fiction drama hybrid was a major ratings hit and was one of the earliest success stories regarding a live-action comic book adaptation. The popularity of the series, as well as the strange legal tension between Marvel Comics and its licensing partners, is why Stan Lee rushed to create a She-Hulk before Johnson could.
In the '70s, Marvel Comics had sold the rights to a handful of its characters to the separate company of Universal Television. Besides the Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Namor, and the Human Torch were also on the studio's bracket. Johnson, who had already found success with Universal's "The Bionic Woman," initially wasn't interested in adapting any of these...

2002's "Treasure Planet" may've been one of the biggest flops in the history of Disney's animation department, but the swashbuckling sci-fi adventure starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt still has its fair share of fans. The immersive and often beautiful world of space pirates created for the film separates the project from other, more recognizable Disney animated offerings. "Treasure Planet" itself was directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, a filmmaking duo that had previously delivered multiple slam-dunks for Disney, including "The Little Mermaid," "Aladdin," and "Hercules." Their successful track record allowed the directors to venture into a new reality, one inspired by another filmmaker's mind-bending work.
As we remember it, "Treasure Planet" more than earned its title with a space adventure story for the ages. A sci-fi twist on Robert Louis Stevenson's novel "Treasure Island," the film followed Jim Hawkins (Gordon-Levitt), a teenager who comes across a map that leads to the ultimate pirate treasure.

The early 2000s were a weird time for everyone -- Disney included. Like an exhausted millennial desperately rephrasing their resume, Walt Disney Animation Studios was eager to latch onto anything that would permit the company a new lease on life. For context, the Disney Renaissance, which began with "The Little Mermaid" in 1989 and shuttered its majestic doors with "Tarzan" in 1999, was over and the studio wanted to prove it could create stories that were more than musically charged fantasies. What's more, Disney also wanted to explore more computer-generated imagery or, as it's better known, CGI. Throw in an increasingly voracious audience with a highly specific hunger for science-fiction and, well, two and two makes four.
Look, this is a gross exaggeration of how Disney functioned in the early 2000s. It seems like the company was working with a strict "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" mentality. Nothing...
