The "Star Trek" episode "The Apple" contained one of show creator Gene Roddenberry's favorite tropes: a remote, agrarian species living in harmony with nature, overseen by an ineffable technological marvel. In "The Apple," the Edenic planet of Gamma Trianguli VI is the home of a sexually innocent, childlike species that is granted their every wish by an all-powerful computer called Vaal. Vaal appears to be a giant snake-like head carved into the rock, but the Enterprise discovers that it is a machine intelligence that has kept the locals in a perpetual childlike state. They are immortal, but also have never had to work, nor are they allowed to "touch" (that is: have sex). Naturally, it will be up to Kirk (William Shatner) and the crew of the Enterprise to destroy Vaal and teach the aliens that growing up is necessary, and that having sex is okay and super-fun.

Stephen King’s second published novel, ‘Salem’s Lot, arrived in hardcover in October 1975 and was King’s next step toward transforming himself from an obscure Maine writer to a pop culture phenomenon. His first novel, Carrie, had sold modestly in hardcover, but the paperback edition of the book took off, selling more than one million copies in its first year of release. Sales were also helped by Brian De Palma’s 1976 movie adaptation, which was not just a box office hit but yielded Academy Award nominations for stars Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie.
And the paperback edition of ‘Salem’s Lot came out right around this time; it became King’s second bestseller in a row and cemented his status as a superstar horror writer. The book, at its core, also posed a simple yet alluring question: What if vampires invaded a small town in rural Maine in the 20th century?...

Robert Brown, who starred alongside David Soul and Bobby Sherman by portraying the oldest of the three logging Bolt brothers on the 1968-70 ABC series Here Come the Brides, has died. He was 95.
Brown died Sept. 19 at his home in Ojai, his friend Kiki Bremont told The Hollywood Reporter.
Brown appeared twice on Broadway and guest-starred as alternating versions of a dilithium-lusting character named Lazarus on the 1967 Star Trek episode “The Alternative Factor.” He got that gig when John Drew Barrymore failed to show up on the morning of the shoot.
In 1968, Brown was on the other end of a last-minute replacement situation. All set to star as Det. Steve McGarrett on the original Hawaii Five-0, he was replaced by Jack Lord five days before filming on the pilot began after producer Leonard Freeman had a change of heart about his leading man.

Alfre Woodard has joined the cast of the upcoming remake of Stephen King novel ‘Salem’s Lot.’
Woodard will take on the role of the gender-flipped Dr. Cody. Cody provides assistance to Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman), Susan Norton (Makenzie Leigh) and Matt Burke (Bill Camp) in fighting the spread of vampires. Spencer Treat Clark also stars as Mike Ryerson.
King’s 1975 horror was his second published novel and tells the story of a writer named Ben Mears who returns to the town of Jerusalem’s Lot (or ‘Salem’s Lot for short) in Maine, where he had lived from the age of five through nine, only to discover that the residents are becoming vampires.
In 1979, the story was adapted into a two-part miniseries which was directed by Tobe Hooper and starred David Soul as Ben Mears and James Mason as Richard Straker, the towns mysterious new arrival.

William Blinn, a longtime writer responsible for “Purple Rain” and “Starsky & Hutch,” died on Thursday. He was 83.
Blinn passed away due to natural causes at an assisted living facility in Burbank, his daughter, Anneliese Johnson, told multiple media outlets.
Blinn enjoyed a four-decade career where, along with penning the script for the Prince-starring film, he also served as a writer for TV productions including “Roots,” “Bonanza” and “Fame.” In the 1970s, Blinn adapted Chicago Bears’ running back Gale Sayers’ autobiography, “I Am Third” into the ABC TV film, “Brian’s Song.” Based on the relationship between Sayers and his Bears teammate, Brian Piccolo, it is the fourth most-watched made-for-tv film. “Brian’s Song” earned Blinn one of his two Emmy awards.
In 1975, Blinn created “Starsky & Hutch,” which ran for 93 episodes over four seasons on ABC. It was originally presented as a 70-minute “movie of the week” before being turned into a TV show.

While most actors have a long wait ahead of them before their next starring role is devoured by audiences, actor Ali Fazal has two major performances coming out: Season 2 of Amazon India Original series “Mirzapur,” streaming Oct. 23, and a feature role in Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie adaptation “Death on the Nile,” set for release Dec. 18, pandemic willing.
Fazal broke out internationally in “Furious 7” (2015), before going on to play Abdul to Judi Dench’s Victoria in Stephen Frears’ “Victoria & Abdul” in 2017 — the same year he was chosen as one of the Variety’s 10 Actors to Watch.
In “Death on the Nile,” Fazal plays a character first portrayed by George Kennedy in the 1978 film adaptation, and by David Soul as part of long-running series “Poirot.” His casting continues the recent trend of color-blind casting where an actor’s ethnicity doesn’t necessarily inform the role. “The culture has shifted,...

New Line has hired “It” writer Gary Dauberman to direct its adaptation of Stephen King’s 1975 horror novel “Salem’s Lot” from his own script.
Dauberman made his directorial debut with New Line’s “Annabelle Comes Home,” which he wrote. In addition to both “It” films, he’s also written “Annabelle,” “Annabelle Creation” and “The Nun.”
James Wan, Roy Lee and Mark Wolper are producing “Salem’s Lot,” which is focused on writer Ben Mears returning to the Maine town of Jerusalem’s Lot (shortened to Salem’s Lot), where he had lived as a boy. He discovers that the townspeople are slowly being turned into vampires.

A director has been announced for New Line’s upcoming film version of Stephen King’s classic novel, ‘Salem’s Lot, and it seems the search did not have to go too far or wide: Gary Dauberman, who’s already writing the screenplay, will now get behind the camera as well for the James Wan-produced project, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Dauberman made his directorial debut last year on Annabelle Comes Home, easily the best of the three Annabelle movies and a genuinely creepy exercise in its own right. Dauberman has also written the Annabelle trilogy, as well as The Nun, and also co-wrote the King-based films It and It: Chapter 2 with director Andy Muschietti, all for Warner Bros. Pictures’ New Line division.
‘Salem’s Lot was King’s second published novel, coming out in 1975. It was centered around a town in rural Maine called Jerusalem’s Lot that is overrun...

There’s a time-honored tradition of turning celebrated movies into television series. A lot of them have ended up as sitcoms: “The Odd Couple,” “M*A*S*H,” “Alice” (spun out of Martin Scorsese’s 1974 landmark “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore”). But not all of them. Did you know that “Casablanca” was turned into two different TV series, one in 1955 and one in 1983? (The latter starred David Soul as Rick Blaine!) In 1976, they tried it with “Serpico.” Sometimes, a series can seem a true extension of the movie it’s adapted from — that’s what happened with “Fargo” and “Dear White People.” Sometimes, the movie that spawned a series will come to seem a mere footnote to the show — that’s what happened with “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Friday Night Lights.” And in the case of “Parenthood” (though it took two tries to get it right), a movie can be turned into...
