Back in 1998, the legendary Kurt Russell teamed up with Mortal Kombat and Event Horizon director Paul W.S. Anderson for a sci-fi action movie called Soldier – which is considered to be set in the same world as Blade Runner, and also shared screenwriter David Webb Peoples with that Ridley Scott classic. But Soldier came and went without many movie-goers noticing, sputtering out with just $14.6 million at the domestic box office. It has earned some fans over the years, like JoBlo’s own Jake Dee (who wrote about Soldier for the Black Sheep series)… and now author Danny Stewart has put together the book Soldier: From Script to Screen to pay tribute to the film, dig into the story of its production, and try to draw in some new fans.

Elvis topped the feature competition at the 10th annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards (IATSE Local 706), winning a pair of awards for period make-up and period hair styling.
Accepting with the team, Shane Thomas said of the team’s challenge to creating Elvis Presley, “We wanted to represent and respect, but not impersonate.” He also saluted director Baz Luhrmann’s “unwavering commitment” to filmmaking.
Also on Saturday at The Beverly Hilton, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever collected the award for contemporary hair styling. Department head Camille Friend dedicated the award to the late Chadwick Boseman.
Angela Bassett – who is Oscar-nominated for her role as Queen Ramonda in Wakanda Forever – received the Guild’s Distinguished Artisan Award during the ceremony. Bassett called the Guild members the “unsung heroes of filmmaking” as she accepted the award. “For any show, there is a team who works long and hard to help us bring to life the character.

When director Todd Phillips brought us his dark, gritty take on the Joker in "Joker," we also got one of the best "Saturday Night Live" spoofs in recent years: "Grouch," starring David Harbour as a dark, gritty version of Oscar the Grouch living in a dark, gritty version of "Sesame Street."
But it's 2023 now, and we've moved on; dark and gritty is out, and bleak and moody is in. This week's "Saturday Night Live" host Pedro Pascal got the chance to spoof his own show, HBO's prestige drama adaptation of post-apocalyptic video game "The Last of Us," with a bleak, moody, prestige drama adaptation of another iconic game.
"HBO Mario Kart" actually works surprisingly well, though maybe that's just because the worlds of both "The Last of Us" and "Mario Kart" are dominated by mushrooms. And while the HBO-ified "Mario Kart" does take some creative liberties, there are also some...

On August 2, “America’s Got Talent” returned with more spectacular auditions on Episode 10 of Season 17. Host Terry Crews welcomed series judges Simon Cowell, Sofia Vergara, Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel back to the dais with performances from the ninth set of entertainers. See ‘America’s Got Talent’ episode 9 performances ranked: Top 14 acts ranked from worst to best
Season 17 Episode 10 rankings:
12. Mr. Moo Shakes: Mr. Moo Shakes sounds like Adam Driver, which is hilarious. He also is a decent percussionist. Would I pay to see that in Las Vegas or anywhere? No. Should he be headlining a show at a theme park? Yes! Social media loved him.
11. Penny Starr Sr: Penny is proof that life can be a blast even as one gets older.

Lawrence G. Paull, the Oscar-nominated production designer who helped create the distinctive looks of 1980s films including the visually groundbreaking 1982 “Blade Runner.” died on Nov. 10 of heart disease in La Jolla, Calif. He was 81.
Paull received an Academy Award nomination for art direction with David L. Snyder for Ridley Scott’s prescient film based on the Philip K. Dick novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” He won the BAFTA award for production design for the influential sci-fi film, which depicted a Los Angeles in 2019 with 105 million residents and incessant rain. Together with Scott, Snyder and visual futurist Syd Mead, they conceived a dystopian world of familiar detective film tropes interwoven with a decaying vision of the near future.
Scott said in a statement, “I was always struck by his staunch and faithful support of the strange plan for the unique world of ‘Blade Runner.'”

Update: The Aether proof of concept film, ‘Aether: The Rise of Specter’, has been released! It clocks in at approximately 8 minutes and provides a quick walk-through of an elaborate world and a glimpse at the people who live in it. It stirs up feelings of Firefly for me, which is a very good thing. Don’t take my word for it. Check out the film below!
We absolutely love supporting independent filmmakers, short films, and unique storytelling. So when I learned about Aether: Prologue we just had to learn more. You may remember our preview of the full length feature Convergence done earlier this year (check it out if you missed it). Well the fine folks at Frame 29 Films, responsible for Convergence, are also responsible for Aether: Prologue.
The genre of steam punk has really been gaining popularity in recent years, and Aether: Prologue seeks to elevate the concept with a fantastic original story.

Let’s be honest, Super Mario Bros: The Movie is not a great movie. It’s not even a great video game adaptation. As a movie-loving teen the film was high on my must-see radar, so imagine my disappointment when I eventually saw the film on VHS… However since then I’ve come to appreciate the film for the bizarre Sf-tinged adventure movie that it is, rather than an adaptation of my all-time favourite video game franchise.
A critical and commercial failure on it’s original 1993 release, Super Mario Bros: The Movie has, in the intervening years, become something of a cult classic. So much so that the out-of-print DVD...

Blade Runner is one of those films that ran away with its own future (conveniently perhaps). With less than stunning reviews meeting its release, and more than a few audiences turned off by its strangely dark presentation, the film nevertheless managed to continue to convert fans over several years (amazingly this is the 30th Anniversary release), and now finds itself frequently referred to as the best sci-fi film ever.
The film not only pushed boundaries, and showed us the wild and complex imagination of Ridley Scott in his prime, but kicked off the movie world’s love affair with Phillip K. Dick. Though the screenplay diverges greatly from the source material (as do all films based on his work), the spirit of his story comes through far better than in most efforts.
Blade Runner, which holds up incredibly well today, weaves through surprising complexities, and showcases questions and odd turns enough for multiple viewings.

Blade Runner is perhaps one of the most released movies on DVD and Blu-ray, so a 30th Anniversary Collectors Edition release was no surprise — expected, really.
Still, when it comes to Ridley Scott’s (Robin Hood) classic science-fiction film, starring Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones), Sean Young (Dune), Daryl Hannah (Wall Street) and Rutger Hauer (The Rite), we’re not complaining about the chance to see it again, and again, and again.
Rated R, the 1982 futuristic film is dark, gritty and beautiful, with director Scott’s signature sweeping visuals.
Based on the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick, the story, for newbies, follows Rick Deckard (Ford), a blade runner who’s tasked with tracking down and terminating four replicants who have found out they’re due to die and...
