Vertical is getting ahead of the crowds as this year’s Cannes market starts wheeling and dealing for Hollywood’s hottest projects and properties. The studio acquired the U.S. rights from AGC Studios to The Order, with Justin Kurzel in the director’s chair. Based on Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt’s novel The Silent Brotherhood, The Order stars Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, and Tye Sheridan.
Here’s a synopsis of Flynn and Gerhardt’s novel courtesy of Library Journal:
Two courageous investigative journalists have created an insider’s account of the “silent brotherhood,” the anti-Jewish, white supremacist underground that, with the justification of some perversely interpreted Christian teachings, conducts an all-out race war. The movement has gathered a group of superpatriots, zealots, malcontents, as well as, rather disturbingly, a large majority of ordinary people. These followers see the underground’s survivalist creed as the way whites can protect...

Exclusive: Vertical has acquired U.S. rights from AGC Studios to The Order, a dramatic thriller directed by Australia’s Justin Kurzel (Macbeth), on which we were first to report. Starring Jude Law (Firebrand), Nicholas Hoult (X-Men franchise), Tye Sheridan (The Card Counter), Jurnee Smollett (Birds of Prey) and more, the film will will have an exclusive release in theaters nationwide later this year.
Written by Oscar and BAFTA nominee Zach Baylin (King Richard), the film adapts Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt’s book The Silent Brotherhood, chronicling the escalating crimes of the titular white supremacist domestic terror group. It’s set in 1983, when a series of increasingly violent bank robberies, counterfeiting operations, and armored car heists frightened communities throughout the Pacific Northwest. As baffled law enforcement agents scrambled for answers, a lone FBI agent (Law), stationed in the sleepy, picturesque town of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, came to believe...

You can’t fault Peacock for its timing, dropping The Independent just a week before the all-important 2022 midterm elections. Nor can you quibble with the thriller’s grounding in our contemporary political reality, in which an inexperienced celebrity candidate can vault from long shot to frontrunner simply by offering a seemingly viable exit from America’s entrenched two-party stasis, with one side fueling the country’s rage while the other “sits on its hands and whines about it.” Whether election-fatigued audiences will have an appetite for this slick but superficial depiction of moral elasticity in politics and beleaguered truth in journalism remains an open question.
This first narrative feature from documentary director Amy Rice (HBO’s By the People: The Election of Barack Obama) is sturdy enough by the standards of most direct-to-streaming movie premieres. But that’s admittedly not a high bar to clear.

"Do you have an alibi for last night?" Quiver Distribution has unveiled an official trailer for an indie thriller titled Out of the Blue, the latest from American filmmaker Neil Labute. There have been so many films named Out of the Blue over the years that it doesn't make any sense to use this same dull title again. The romantic thriller centers on Connor, whose dull life is transformed when he meets the enigmatic beauty Marilyn. His heart of gold is seemingly destined for the trophy wife. The only hitch in their idyllic new life together? Marilyn is trapped in a nightmare with an abusive husband and vulnerable stepdaughter and schemes with Connor to find a way out. Ray Nicholson stars as Connor, featuring Diane Kruger as Marilyn, and a cast featuring Hank Azaria, Victor Slezak, and Chase Sui Wonders. This looks like exactly ...

This year, Netflix grabbed a whopping 35 Oscar nominations for its slate of original movies, including 10 nominations for David Fincher’s “Mank,” six nominations for Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” and five nominations for the August Wilson adaptation “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” which featured the final performance from star and Best Actor nominee Chadwick Boseman. The total number of nominations for the streaming service ranked among the most ever by a single studio and dwarfed the Netflix tally in 2020 when the platform grabbed 24 nominations to lead all distributors.
But judging merely by quantity, 2021 could become the biggest year yet for Netflix. Over the final four months of the year, the studio will debut more than 40 titles, including new movies from past Oscar favorites like Adam McKay, Jane Campion, and Paolo Sorrentino as well as buzzy features from first-time filmmakers such as Lin-Manuel Miranda and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Premiering back at Sundance Film Festival in 2020, it’s not surprising there’s been a wait to see Worth, written by Max Borenstein and directed by Sara Colangelo. Picked up by Netflix timed to the 20th anniversary of 9/11, the drama follows Congress-appointed attorney Kenneth Feinberg (Michael Keaton), who runs the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund. Along with his firm partner Camille Biros (Amy Ryan), Feinberg quickly produces a formula by which to calculate what each victim’s loved ones are owed. While Charles Wolf (Stanley Tucci), a community organizer mourning the death of his wife, enters the picture, their plans get complicated. Ahead of a September 3 debut on Netflix, the first trailer has now arrived.

"We can't bring them back, but we can help their loved ones." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for the indie legal drama Worth, which first premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival last year. They will be debuting this streaming in September in less than a month, just in time for the upcoming 9/11 anniversary – because it's about an attorney in Washington D.C. who battles against cynicism, bureaucracy and politics to help the victims of 9/11. Ken Feinberg learns a lesson in empathy when he is faced with the near-impossible task of determining how to compensate families who suffered incalculable losses on September 11th. Based on true events. This stars Michael Keaton, Stanley Tucci, Amy Ryan, plus Tate Donovan, Shunori Ramanathan, Talia Balsam, Laura Benanti, Marc Maron, Ato Blankson-Wood, Chris Tardio, Carolyn Mignini, and Victor Slezak. While many of the Nazis in Hunters are fictionalized, at least one actual historical figure makes an appearance in the show.
The following contains spoilers for Hunters.
In the new Amazon Prime series Hunters, Al Pacino and Logan Lerman lead an underground team of assassins and investigators on the trail of Nazis living, working, and plotting in the United States circa 1977. While many of the show’s Nazi villains -- played by great actors such as Dylan Baker and Lena Olin -- are fictional creations, in episode 8 (“The Jewish Question”) of the 10-part series we are introduced to a real-life German figure out of history: Wernher von Braun.
Played here by veteran TV actor Victor Slezak, von Braun was a leading -- if not the leading -- aerospace engineer for Nazi Germany’s rocket development program during the heyday of the Third Reich. Following the Allied victory over Germany,...

As a child, when future TV host Fred Rogers would see scary images on the news, his mother would tell him, “Look for the heroes.” If Fred were a boy today, she’d add, “Look for Ken Feinberg.” Feinberg, the lawyer at the center of Sara Colangelo’s “Worth,” specializes in putting a price tag on human tragedy. He’s brought his calculator to the shootings in Sandy Hook, Aurora, Virginia Tech and Orlando, and tallied spreadsheets for victims of the Boston Bombing, the Bp oil spill, Agent Orange, asbestos, bad breast implants, bad car ignitions, Boeing 737s, the Catholic Church and Penn State. Feinberg even haggled the value of the Zapruder Tape.
Here, Colangelo (“The Kindergarten Teacher”) and screenwriter Max Borenstein are only interested in Feinberg’s most famous case: the payout for the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund. The two-year grind involved more than 7,000 families and turned the disaster accountant,...

Of the many films the Tribeca Film Festival shows, one of the biggest categories that often gets overlooked is the shorts category. Shorts are most definitely much harder to make considering their limited screen time and the need to fit a whole story within that time. Taking that into consideration, the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival decided to split up its shorts submissions into various categories, including New York Now shorts program.
This array of shorts all contained some form of New York City within them, whether through history, character, story, or anything in between. There were seven shorts in the program, and they are as follows:
Mildred & The Dying Parlor: Directed by Alex Gayner, starring Zosia Mamet, Jane Krakowski, Steve Buscemi, and Evan Jonigkeit; about a family who runs a dying parlor out of their home until an unexpected visitor shows up. Wannabe: Directed by Matthew Manson, starring Malcolm-Jamal Warner,...

Natural disasters have a way of bringing out both the best and the worst in people. Recent weather-related catastrophes such as Hurricane Katrina, tornados in the Midwest, and the recent flooding in the South all test the limits of human endurance both emotionally and physically. The new film A Rising Tide examines the after-effects of Hurricane Sandy on one family and those they’re involved with as they try to rebuild and restart their lives.

Philip and Elizabeth are coming close to a crossroads when faced with the reality that their kids could be killed as a result of their criminal activities in "Comrades," the second season premiere of The Americans.
Philip (Matthew Rhys) begins the episode by pulling a standard undercover operation, resulting in the death of two Afghans at his hands. The standard op, however, did not go entirely smoothly. In a moment of panic, Philip also shot an innocent busboy after his disguise was destroyed and his face was in plain sight. In a snap decision, Philip decided to kill the busboy to protect his identity.
And, no rest for the wicked means that Philip returns home to embark on yet another operation with Elizabeth (Keri Russell) and comrades Leanne (Natalie Gold) and Emmett (Jeremy Davidson), another spy couple who have two children, Jared (Owen Campbell) and Amelia (Gracie Bea Lawrence), not unlike Philip and Elizabeth.

The first season of The Americans came to a thrilling end in “The Colonel,” a gratifying resolver that still left plenty to ponder for Season 2.

Breathe. Do not forget to breathe.
Your enjoyment of "The Americans" requires you to stay alive long enough to truly appreciate the incredible -- but real -- genius of the show's Season 1 finale. No matter how much anyone studied history or could have guessed about what was coming, "The Colonel" still managed to shock and surprise from beginning to end.
It's going to be a long almost-year to wait before we find out what happens next.
Crises of conscience and related international crises
Philip and Elizabeth Jennings (Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell) have not one but two missions to accomplish before the season ends. The first is an everyday thing: Someone has to go retrieve a recording from Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger's study bug. The other mission is a little more dangerous, as it requires one of them to meet with a Colonel who knows all about the Reagan administration's Star Wars program.

In its first season, "The Americans" has been a surprisingly tense and entertaining work of drama. Kgb spies Elizabeth and Philip Jennings (Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys) have made a compelling couple to watch as they negotiate marriage, secrecy and the Cold War.
But whatever "The Americans" has achieved throughout Season 1, it all pales in comparison to the incredible season finale, "The Colonel."
The basic plot for the finale tells you nothing of the edge-of-your-seat thrills and heartbreaking stories of the episode. In it, Philip and Elizabeth have to think about their relationship as they prepare for a meeting with a Colonel (guest star Victor Slezak) that might just be a setup. Meanwhile, Stan (Noah Emmerich) inches closer to identifying his illegal Russian spies.
The tension merely builds from here. Because doing so would partially ruin this great episode of television, there is no way we can reveal any major spoilers for "The Colonel" here.

Treme Season 3: Spoilers for September Episodes
For the first two seasons of Treme, the good people of New Orleans had to deal with problems in both their personal and professional lives as well as the city they called home. There was no real safeguard for them to lean on at the time that they needed support the most, the storm having knocked out businesses, jammed up any city bureaucracy needed to get things moving again, and driven residents to madness. The third season, which premieres next month, looks to add a little more positive forward movement, the worst days of devastation seemingly behind. But things aren't all easy in the Big Easy and just because the biggest storm has passed doesn't mean the skies have completely cleared.
Below are the dates, times, episode names, episode descriptions, and repeat airings for the first two episodes of Treme's 10-episode third season.

Meryl Streep, a likely Best Actress Academy Award contender for Phyllida Lloyd's Margaret Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady, will receive an Honorary Golden Bear at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival next February 14. As part of the ceremony, The Iron Lady will be screened at the Berlinale Palast. If Streep does get — the inevitable — Oscar nod for The Iron Lady, that'll be her seventeenth nomination and fourteenth in the Best Actress category. She has so far won two Oscars: Best Supporting Actress for Robert Benton's father-love drama Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) and Best Actress for Alan J. Pakula's Holocaust drama Sophie's Choice (1982). In 2003, Streep shared with fellow The Hours co-stars Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore the Berlin Film Festival's Silver Bear for Best Actress. Six years later, Streep was the recipient of the Berlinale Camera. Among Streep's other films are Fred Zinnemann's Julia (1977), starring Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave,...

Sony Pictures is allegedly developing an untitled Salt sequel. Deadline reports that Kurt Wimmer is currently writing the script. Angelina Jolie, in the meantime, will sign on to reprise her role in the forthcoming film "if it comes together right".
A 2010 film, "Salt" revolves around Jolie's Evelyn Salt, a CIA agent whose loyalty is tested when a defector accuses her of being a Russian spy. Salt goes on the run, using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative to elude capture.
Salt's efforts to prove her innocence only serve to cast doubt on her motives, as the hunt to uncover the truth behind her identity continues and the question remains: "Who Is Salt?" The film ended with a cliffhanger: Salt gives an expression that she wants to get revenge against those who "took everything from her".

Angelina Jolie makes two great escapes from capture in two brand new clips of "Salt". In one clip from Yahoo! Movies, her Evelyn Salt character greets a CIA tactical team with a ball of fire she makes using common household items when she is boxed in an interrogation room after she is accused of being a Russian spy.
Another clip, which comes out courtesy of MySpace's Trailer Park, Evelyn is trying to make her escape from the Lapd. Cuffed inside a moving car and sandwiched between two men, the CIA officer is quick to make her move to take over the control of the car. When she is seemed to be cornered, she pushes the car to jump a flyover.
