Around a year ago, actress Evan Rachel Wood and more than a dozen other women came forward with allegations of rape, physical assault, and mental cruelty against Marilyn Manson. The entertainment industry reacted swiftly, with Manson’s manager, booking agent, record label, and others ending their associations with him soon after. (Manson has denied the allegations.) Since then, the only prominent figure in music to support Manson publicly has been Kanye West, who featured the musician on his Donda album and has given him a spotlight at events.

It's a dilemma all music lovers face: narrowing down a list of your all-time favorite albums. Even restricting myself to just the past year, it's quite a challenge... mainly because it's been a damn fine year for dark, spooky and horror-related music. Not only have some well-known bands rediscovered their mojo or improved on an already strong track record, but I've also discovered dozens of new artists who rock the darker, more obscure corners of the music biz, and many of them belong on this list right alongside their more high-profile peers. I'm also pretty sure you'll be hearing a lot more from them in 2013 and beyond. Bear in mind a couple of things before diving in: this list is alphabetical, and not necessarily in order of preference (because I always have a shit time trying to settle on my favorite anything); and this list is confined to horror-related or darker-themed music,...

Even before Pennsylvania-based metal unit Motionless in White released their debut full-length album Creatures, they had already grabbed my attention... and not just because frontman Chris Motionless and I happen to own the same Bauhaus t-shirt. It turns out Chris is a huge horror fan, and much of the band's music is directly inspired by horror stories and movies. My first taste of their dark, intense gothic hardcore came three years ago with a sick cover of Rob Zombie's “Dragula,” which impressed the hell out of me. The album's arrival the following year both met and exceeded my expectations, and their rapidly growing fanbase exploded in response. For example, when FEARnet premiered the band's controversial video “Immaculate Misconception” – directed by Cody Snider, son of Twisted Sister's Dee Snider (who also played a small role) – it became an overnight viral sensation. [If you somehow missed that one, you can still watch it right here.] So when the band announced the impending arrival...

Even if you aren't familiar with Tim Skold, I'm betting you've heard his work – especially if your musical tastes fall on the dark side (and since you're hanging out here... well, duh). The Swedish-born industrial rocker has been kicking around for two decades with the likes of Marilyn Manson, Kmfdm, ohGr, 16volt and Left Spine Down, as well as his original band Shotgun Messiah – all the while turning out a buttload of remixes – and his influence can be heard all over the dial. Strangely enough, in between all these collaborations, this cat hasn't put out an album of his own since his debut Skold back in 1996. But as of tomorrow, that fifteen-year gap is about to get plugged. With the release of...

Music, when viewed from a historical perspective, can be likened to an old building. For some of us, it’s a gallery where we can view our favorite artists time and again showcased in brilliant light. For others, such as myself, it’s like going back to a childhood home. Everything is just the way you remembered it, everything is comfortable, and it‘s warm in the illumination of nostalgia. However music affects your life, it marks you for the remainder of your time on this planet. The things you hear echoing off these walls can enhance your best times and alleviate the worst moments you go through. Through it all, these chambers are the place you come to time and again. The different bands and trends that pass by are much like layers of paint on the walls, and the artists that come into the limelight and create revolutionary...

Recently I found myself in a small room, wearing paper pajamas, and kinda doped again. I was in yet another institution, this time for running out of my home and attacking the garbage men with a rubber pepper from Taco Bell. It’s weird, I know, but apparently the boa I was wearing matched the coloration of the pepper, so at least I know I looked good. Anyway, while I was in there I met these guys from Canada. They looked kinda weird -but it may have just been the Thorazine --and said they’re in a band. Apparently, the story goes, they got in trouble for the things coming out of their mouths and the ‘Authorities’ automatically assumed they’re crazy. When you speak out about change, about escaping from the brutal technocratic society of Governmental controlled idiocy that we labor under, people tend to look at you strangely.

Recently I’ve noticed the term ‘Cyberpunk’ thrown around a lot. Many bands call themselves and their sound Cyberpunk, and it has rapidly become a genre unto itself. Originating with the 1983 story of the same name by Phillip K. Dick Award-winning author Bruce Bethke, Cyberpunk is a cultural evolution that has come about as a result of the fusion between man and technology. The sound of Cyberpunk is largely rooted in a marriage of visceral instruments, such as guitars and live drums, bound with electronic programming. It also embodies an entire philosophical ideology that is strangely akin to the Punk movement from which it takes a lot of it’s styling. Mass-media, pop-psychology, and the mainstream approach to life are rejected in favor of an existence based in the reality of your own choosing, conception, and creation. A number of media events are tapping into this life-style, illustrating the validity of the concept.

In the ever ephemeral world of music there are many legends. Some rise to the heavens, flare up, and burn out quickly; leaving behind ash and bone that is quickly swept up by the sagacious whore-like wind we call ‘The Industry.‘ Others create monumental legacies -album after album, side project after side project --for their listeners that resonate through everything they do, causing a crystalline harmony that makes them more and more profound as they hum in our ears. Digital grapevines resonate and pulse with the susurrations of every nuance and movement these legends leave in their wake, lamenting the retirement of Al Jourgensen, laughing at the latest antics from Marilyn Manson, and reminiscing. That same reminiscent spirit makes people line up night after night, all over the world, to bask in the glories -past and present --that these artists radiate. However, it’s a rare event for these legends...

After a quarter-century of rocking the "Ultra-Heavy Beat," industrial-metal pioneers Kmfdm show no sign whatsoever of running out of steam. With barely a breath after spinning out the album-length collaboration with former member Tim Skold (appropriately titled Skold vs. Kmfdm), the band rolls out their 17th CD release Blitz on Tuesday. If you know me like I do (although you probably don't want to know me that well), you're aware I luvs me some Kmfdm, so each new release is like a little holiday… and like any special occasion, it holds some delights and some disappointments. So does Blitz keep the fires of hot industrial love stoked in the rusted valves of this writer's cynical old heart? Jump on and find...
