Warning: contains spoilers for the Shetland series eight finale.
When Di Ruth Calder (Ashley Jensen) was asked at the end of Shetland series eight when she’d be leaving the isles, she answered: “Actually, not for a while.” Having repaired her relationship with her estranged brother and dealt with some old demons, Ruth planned to stick around. Long enough it seems, to lead the cast of Shetland series nine and ten.
The BBC has commissioned two further series of the picturesque crime drama starring Jensen in the lead role of Di Calder. Filming on series nine begins in March 2024, with filming on series 10 to follow in 2025. Fans can expect the show to return to BBC One either in late 2024 or early 2025. We’ll keep you posted as more news arrives.

Fans of British TV ate well in 2023. The year said goodbye to some excellent British TV shows with the finales of extraordinary crime dramas Happy Valley, Top Boy, Guilt and Endeavour – four very different shows set in four very different places. We waved off comedies Sex Education and Ghosts, and welcomed back some exciting returns in the form of Black Mirror, Good Omens and of course, Doctor Who.
And then there were the new additions – superhero comedy Extraordinary, police newbie drama Blue Lights, mind-bending comic book adaptation Bodies and chilling true crime series The Sixth Commandment.
It’s hard to separate the pack, but using a complex system of pulleys and levers, a gunge machine and – unfortunately necessary for the person who nominated The Idol – an oubliette, Den of Geek polled its writers and drew up two lists of the best TV of the year, one for American shows and...

Scottish thriller Guilt is back for the third and final chapter in the McCall Brothers trilogy. Neil Forsyth’s fiendishly plotted drama all began when Max and Jake – a ruthless lawyer who’d climbed his way out of his working class Leith upbringing to wealth and status, and his vinyl-loving record shop slacker sibling – were flung together when they tried to cover up an accidental hit-and-run. So began a complex and gripping story about money laundering, Edinburgh gangsters, betrayal, class, family and yes, guilt.
Series three finds Max and Jake forced back to Edinburgh where some old enemies await. They’re joined by Pi-turned legal advisor Kenny Burns, his police detective girlfriend Yvonne, criminal kingpin Maggie Lynch, dangerously unpredictable ex-con Teddy and more familiar faces from the first two series. Also appearing are a range of new characters, as follows:

Max McCall is a bad brother, a worse friend, and a great TV character. That’s half down to Mark Bonnar’s exceptional performance as the disbarred lawyer who’d sell his granny for a rung back up the ladder he slid down in series one, and half down to creator Neil Forsyth’s writing.
Guilt’s scripts are beauties; they tell their twisting thriller story about crime, class and family without cliché or predictability. They’re funny and political, because so are people, and they’re universal because they have a pin-sharp sense of place. You don’t need to be from Leith or Edinburgh for its us-and-them rivalry to resonate, or to get the baked-in meaning of local boundaries and kinships, or see why it’s a punchline for a character to have moved to Dundee.
Anybody can also understand how wealth might be an expressway out of poverty and powerlessness,...

Smart and skilled, she can pilot a boat and break the fourth wall to share. “You are her confidant,” Walker says. “She’s not speaking to you just for effect. She’s talking to you because that’s how she works out her life.” What’s to work out? Besides being the single mom of a rebellious teen (Silvie Furneaux), she supervises a colleague (Jamie Sives) irked about being passed over for her position, as well as two junior investigators (Katie Leung and Ukweli Roach). Also helping the detective inspector solve murders: literature and folklore. In the first of six episodes, a man who was harpooned calls to mind Moby-Dick’s theme of obsession. "How much are you prepared to pay?" Lionsgate has released an official Us trailer for the next film in the Intrigo trilogy, this one officially titled Intrigo: Dear Agnes. We featured the trilogy teaser last year, and the main trailer for Intrigo: Death of an Author earlier this year. This is the second feature film in the big screen adaptation of the mystery series. With the death of her husband, Agnes is desperate for money. Then she runs into her old friend Henny, who is enraged at her unfaithful spouse, Peter. Henny makes Agnes a shocking offer—enough cash to live a better life, if she will murder Peter and get rid of him. All this leads to an "explosive, unforgettable climax." Based on a series of short stories from Sweden, of course. This specific murder thriller stars Carla Juri, Gemma Chan, Jamie Sives, Jason Wong, Laurie Kynaston, and Cal MacAninch.

"Why country?" "Because it's three chords of truth." Neon has released a final "No Place Like Home" trailer for Wild Rose, the film about a country singer that just opened in theaters this weekend (full trailer). This first premiered at the Toronto & London Film Festivals last year, and stopped by SXSW this year. Acclaimed Irish actress Jessie Buckley plays a young mother from Glasgow, fresh out of prison, who decides to give up everything and move to Nashville to chase her dreams of becoming a country singer. An "uplifting story with an original soundtrack about family, dreams and reality, and three chords and the truth." The full cast includes Julie Walters, Sophie Okonedo, Jamie Sives, Gemma McElhinney, James Harkness, and Ashley Shelton. This has excellent reviews, saying it's "crowd-pleasing" with an "unbelievably great" performance from Buckley. It just started playing in theaters - check your local art house cinema to catch it.

It’s a standard-issue plot: A young, single, Scottish mother of two, recently paroled from prison, harbors dreams of country-music stardom in Nashville. Don’t be fooled. Wild Rose is anything but the same old underdog story. And chances are you’ll fall fast and hard for breakout star Jessie Buckley. This classically trained Irish singer and actress was a runner-up on a BBC singing competition and won roles in film (Beast) and TV (War and Peace, HBO’s Chernobyl). She’s a skyrocketing talent — and the full range of...

Jessie Buckley is going to be massive – take our word for it. Wild Rose is the sort of film you want everyone in your life to see, and we’re going to be evangelical about the film until its release next year.
We were there last night at the 2018 London Film Festival British film when Wild Rose came to the capital to debut an incredible performance from Buckley and some soul-stirring music.

A promising but cliched film about two stepbrothers and the manic-pixie-rock-chick who comes between them on a journey from Shetland to Glasgow
It has some promising moments, but there is something forced, contrived and a bit cliched about this fey British indie in the road-movie style. Two teenage stepbrothers, Michael (Jack Parry-Jones) and Thor (Christy O’Donnell), set out from Shetland to Glasgow on a dual mission: Michael to confront his girlfriend, who is at uni and who he suspects is cheating on him, and Thor to find his estranged and remarried mum.
On the way, they meet up with singer Caitlin. In this role, Tara Lee is landed with a frankly unconvincing manic-pixie-rock-chick role – a tough, street-smart character who is there in a kind of sacrificial sense, to facilitate the emotional growth of Michael and Thor and their all-important relationship with each other. The comic notes at the beginning are forced and laborious,...
