My favorite scene in the hilarious new film “The Fall Guy” is the one where Emily Blunt (recent Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee for “Oppenheimer”) belts out the Phil Collins classic “Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)” as Ryan Gosling (recent Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee for “Barbie”) finds himself in a particularly dramatic — and dangerous — sequence of events.
As Blunt sang with all her heart, I couldn’t help but think of how perfect the timing was.
Forty years ago this very month, the famous power ballad had just completed a three-week reign on top of the Billboard Hot 100. “Against All Odds” was the title song from the romantic thriller starring Jeff Bridges, Rachel Ward and James Woods. The Taylor Hackford-directed movie was met with solid reviews and healthy ticket sales. But its most notable success was Collins’s song, which quickly took the Billboard chart by storm.

David Sanborn, the multi-genre saxophonist who performed with David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Carly Simon, James Taylor, and many more, has died. He was 78 years old.
Sanborn’s passing was confirmed on Monday via a post on his social media. “It is with sad and heavy hearts that we convey to you the loss of internationally renowned, six-time Grammy Award-winning, saxophonist, David Sanborn,” the post read. “Mr. Sanborn passed Sunday afternoon, May 12th, after an extended battle with prostate cancer with complications.”
Born in 1945, Sanbron was introduced to the saxophone during his childhood as a means of recovering from polio. By the time he was 14, he had the opportunity to perform with blues legends like Albert King and Little Milton, the first of his many, many collaborations.
In 1967, he joined The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, whom he played with at Woodstock two years later. In the early ‘70s, he began performing with more artists,...

David Sanborn, the six time Grammy-winning alto saxophonist who played at Woodstock, composed music for the Lethal Weapon movies, played in the SNL and Late Night with David Letterman bands and worked with everyone from Stevie Wonder to David Bowie, died Sunday afternoon, May 12th, after an extended battle with prostate cancer with complications. He Was 78.
Sanborn’s music is often described “smooth jazz,” but he reportedly rejected that characterization, and one can see why. His lively, iconic sax solo on Bowie’s “Young Americans” is anything but. Sanborn preferred the idea that he “put the saxophone back into rock ’n’ roll.”
Indeed, he worked with a virtual who’s who of rock and R&b legends, including James Brown, Eric Clapton, Roger Daltrey, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Al Jarreau, George Benson, Elton John, Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt, Billy Joel, Roger Waters, Steely Dan, the Eagles,...

The music business is all about the next big act, the next big performer. Who’s going to break out. Who’s going to be the next household name. The Grammys, over the years and to varying degrees of success, has delivered that prediction with its Best New Artist prize.
Starting with Bobby Darin in 1960, the award has been the harbinger of who’s going to be topping the music world … some of the time. Darin didn’t do too bad in his long music and acting career. In 1965, a little combo from the UK made the cut and The Beatles went on to become one of the greatest bands ever.
Some other highlights of the Best New Artist roster. In 1962, Peter Nero was the first jazz musician to win. Bobbie Gentry was the first woman to win in 1968. The Carpenters, Richard and Karen, was the first duo to win...

Michael McDonald has announced a new memoir co-written by actor Paul Reiser. Titled What a Fool Believes: A Memoir, it’s slated for release on May 21st, 2024 via Dey Street Books.
According to a press release, What a Fool Believes is “interwoven with unforgettable tales from his storied career and a cast of music greats” including James Taylor, Ray Charles, Carly Simon, and Quincy Jones. The memoir also finds the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan member “reckoning with the unshakeable insecurities that drove him and the highs and lows of fame and popularity.” Pre-orders are ongoing.
McDonald and Reiser met at a party several years ago, where McDonald learned of Reiser’s love of music — particularly the piano. They began working on the memoir in the spring of 2020 after Reiser “sort of made a joke,” as he explained to People magazine.

John Lennon didn’t think he was the most thoughtful musical producer in the world, but he called out Ringo Starr’s producer for being “too painstaking.” That’s quite the take, considering the producer in question gave us some of Ringo’s best albums. Olivia Rodrigo has been added to the performance line-up of this Friday’s 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, and she’ll reportedly be appearing on stage with inductee Sheryl Crow.
The Rock Hall announced Rodrigo’s appearance today, posting on Instagram that the Guts singer “will perform with one of her heroes” at the induction ceremony this Friday. It’s 2003 and Jay-Z is planning a farewell concert at Madison Square Garden to celebrate his retirement from music.
But his bass player is unavailable. Adam Blackstone, a jack-of-all-trades who plays bass, drums, piano, organ, tuba and sousaphone — and is also a songwriter, producer, composer and everything else under the musical sun — is more than ready to step in.
Twenty years later, Blackstone, now 40, is still working closely with Jay-Z; both are Emmy winners for last year’s hip-hop-heavy Super Bowl halftime show. And the musician who has helped everyone from Rihanna to Justin Timberlake shine is stepping into his own limelight.

Olivia Rodrigo is back with “bad idea right?”, the second single from her forthcoming sophomore album, Guts.
Unlike “vampire,” the first single from Guts (which was named Consequence’s Song of the Week), “bad idea right?” steps away from the more serious side of Rodrigo’s signature post-relationship analysis, and gives her a platform to have a bit of fun. The lyrics consider the pros and cons of hooking up with an ex, asking if it’s a bad idea, but ultimately declaring: “Fuck it, it’s fine.” All this, of course, scored by a rock-pop arrangement, with the kind of head-bopping, anthemic chorus you’d hope for from Rodrigo. “The song is pretty different from ‘vampire’” she told her fans in an email statement, adding that it “shows another side of Guts that’s a little more fun and playful.”

Unlike “vampire,” the first single from Guts (which was named Consequence’s Song of the Week), “bad idea right?” steps away from the more serious side of Rodrigo’s signature post-relationship analysis, and gives her a platform to have a bit of fun. Ringo Starr had a solid relationship with all of his Beatles bandmates, but he was incredibly close to John Lennon. Even after Lennon’s murder, the drummer showed respect by refusing to record a song of his that became a hit. The song we really want to hear, though, is the extended jam Ringo and John played on that Yoko Ono interrupted.
An impatient Yoko Ono broke up a lively jam with Ringo Starr, John Lennon, and Eric Clapton
Members of the Fab Four didn’t stop working together even though the band broke up. Ringo drummed on albums by each of his former bandmates. That included the simultaneous John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band projects in 1970.
The drummer was an early member of the rotating supergroup that orbited around John and Yoko.

Seven films in and nothing about M:i, from the star’s incredible stunt skills to the silly-serious tone, is showing any sign of slowing down
Already, the keynote stunt has become a legend: the one on the poster, the one he reportedly did – for real – six times in one day before he was satisfied. Tom Cruise’s compact body floats free of the motorbike as it drops to Earth from between his diamond-hard thighs, having launched him with a throaty roar off an unfeasibly high cliff-edge; he sails through the sky, pulls the ripcord on a nifty little parachute, and swoops down towards … the speeding Orient Express, fully intent on the traditional carriage-top punch-up. We gasped in the audience. Someone behind me went: “Oh shi-i-i …” Carly Simon should have come in with a new song: Fair Enough, Somebody Does It Better.

A week away from the release of Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” critics have praised the new film as yet another triumph for its leading man, Tom Cruise, and one of if not the best film of the summer.
While some critics noted that the film doesn’t quite reach the heights of its 2018 predecessor “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” or Cruise’s 2022 Best Picture Oscar nominated “Top Gun: Maverick,” reviews agree it has plenty of the wild and tense set pieces that “Mission” fans have come to expect, including a comedic car chase through the streets of Rome, a nail-biting train chase and a much-marketed shot of Cruise riding a motorcycle off a cliff.
“It is Cruise himself that unlocks this extraordinary and, in the end, surprisingly poignant franchise start to finish, the key to it all even when he’s not dangling from a Dubai...

Britney Spears’ “Womanizer” is a jokey song where a woman calls out a man for sleeping around. It sounds like a song from the 1960s that almost has the opposite meaning. Both of these songs reached No. 1 in the United States.

Britney Spears’ ‘Womanizer’ sounds like The Turtles’ ‘Happy Together’
Part of what made “Womanizer” such a smash is its incredibly tight groove. The fact that the verses are so busy works in contrast to its chorus, which is one of the most repetitive hooks in the history of pop music.

Olivia Rodrigo is finally ready to share some new music, with her new single, “Vampire,” arriving June 30.
Admittedly, beyond the announcement — which is obviously monumental in and of itself — there weren’t that many details about “Vampire” to share. Rodrigo wrote the song with producer Daniel Nigro, with whom she made Sour. The song will also get a special seven-inch vinyl single release featuring Rodrigo’s first demo of the song. Beyond that, all that’s left to do is wait — but what’s two-and-a-half weeks after more than two years?...

Paul McCartney began writing songs in the late 1950s and hasn’t stopped since. It’s why he’s written more than 1,000 songs in his career, though the real total is probably higher. He has dozens of No. 1 hits to his name with and without The Beatles, but Paul set an unbreakable record when he wrote “Live and Let Die.”
Paul McCartney | Bettmann/Contributor Paul McCartney set an unbreakable record with an Oscar nomination for “Live and Let Die”
There was one Beatles song Paul never wanted released (“The Long and Winding Road”), but the plan for “Live and Let Die,” his 1973 song with Wings, was always to have it go global.
The theme song to the James Bond movie of the same name came to life in 1972. Then-Apple Records head, Ron Kass, knew someone connected with the Bond franchise. Kass called Paul and asked if he wanted to do a Bond theme song.

You might know “Walking in Memphis,” but how well do you know Marc Cohn? The singer-songwriter rose to fame in the early ’90s thanks to the AC staple, which earned him commercial success and a couple Grammy nominations as well. These days, Cohn’s name is best known in regards to his 1992 win for Best New Artist. Olivia Rodrigo marked the two-year anniversary of her breakout single, “Drivers License,” with a message looking toward the future — and new music.
On Instagram Stories yesterday, Jan. 8, Rodrigo shared a short video of her and producer Dan Nigro laughing and headbanging along to some pretty tender and delicate piano chords. “Working on so many new songs I’m excited to show u!” Rodrigo wrote. “Thank u for everything.”
That was the extent of the message, with Rodrigo declining to offer any specifics as to when this new music might be released.
