- Directed two Oscar nominated performances: Paul Lukas and Lucile Watson. Lukas won for his role in Watch on the Rhine (1943).
- Won Broadway's 1964 Tony Award as Best Producer (Dramatic) for Rolf Hochhuth's "The Deputy," for which he also received a Best Director (Dramatic) nomination. The first of his three Tony nominations had come in 1956 as Best Director for "Inherit the Wind."
- Prolific Broadway producer/director, active from 1928 to 1974.
