Timed to SXSW, Freestyle Digital Media has picked up the North American rights to the music-driven documentary Finding Lucinda.
Directed by Joel Fendelman, the road movie follows singer-songwriter Ismay, also known as Avery Hellman, on a quest to track down her hero and music icon Lucinda Williams and the people and places that shaped her early career. The doc, which premiered at the Sidewalk Film Festival in Birmingham, is set for a fall 2024 release by the digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group.
Finding Lucinda features interviews with Charlie Sexton — who played with Williams when he was 11 years old and she was a little-known songwriter in Austin — Buddy Miller, Mary Gauthier, Josh Baca and Max Baca of Los Texmaniacs, Wolf Stephenson and John Grimaudo, Williams’ guitarist from her first record.
The film was written by Fendelman and Hellman, and produced by Liz McBee, Chuck Prophet and Jennifer Steinman Sternin.

Billy Joel had a special guest on deck last night at Madison Square Garden. Midway through the piano man’s performance, he called Elvis Costello onstage to perform Costello’s 1978 tune “Pump It Up” along with his own song “Allentown.”
Costello sang the lively “Pump It Up” while Joel played piano, and the pair joined vocals to duet on “Allentown,” off Joel’s 1982 album The Nylon Curtain.

Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday celebration gathered an eclectic group of well-wishers including Neil Young, Snoop Dogg, and The Chicks for the first of two performances at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl on Saturday. Watch fan-captured footage from the event below.
“Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90, A Star-Studded Concert Celebrating Willie’s 90th Birthday” kicked off with perhaps the roster’s youngest performer, Billy Strings, who played two Shotgun Willie staples, “Whiskey River” and “Stay a Little Longer.” He later returned to back Bob Weir on a rendition of “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” from Nelson’s classic 1975 LP, Red Headed Stranger, which received further looks from the likes of Norah Jones, Beck, and Tyler Childers.
Country as a genre was well represented between The Chicks, Margo Price, Chris Stapleton, Miranda Lambert, and more, but the set also spanned Nelson’s many musical phases and stages with covers from Tom Jones,...

Bob Dylan’s streaming concert Shadow Kingdom was released on Sunday, and it was cooler and weirder than anything we dared to imagine. Instead of a traditional Never Ending Tour show with his longtime road band, Dylan took a group of new players to the nonexistent Bon Bon Club in Marseille, France, and created a black-and-white dreamscape that wandered between a smoke-filled bar straight out of a 1940s film noir and a classic Hollywood Western saloon, complete with actors in period costumes.

Tweedy offers a wholly unique take on “For You (I’d Do Anything),” doing away with the tender country pluck of Erickson’s original, and instead using a mix of synths and pianos to craft a sweet and meditative soundscape.

Bob Dylan granted the New York Times writer Douglas Brinkley his first interview in years earlier this week, advancing his new album, Rough and Rowdy Ways, which is out June 19.
The interview with the 79-year-old Dylan, a Minnesota native, came the day after George Floyd’s death at the hands of the Minneapolis police. The article said the songwriter “sounded depressed.”
“It sickened me no end to see George tortured to death like that,” Dylan said. “It was beyond ugly. Let’s hope that justice comes swift for the Floyd family and for the nation.”
Dylan’s new album, which contains the already released 17-minute song Murder Most Foul, is his first new work in eight years.
Dylan also spoke about the recent deaths of Little Richard and John Prine in his interview, saying Little Richard “lit a match under me. Tuned me into things I never would have known on my own.

Jack Ingram had already established himself as a booming Texas export when “Wherever You Are” turned him into a nationally celebrated chart-topper in 2005. He talks about both camps during his second appearance on Chris Shiflett’s Walking the Floor podcast.

At a time when leaders spout lies and cries of “fake news” put reputable media outlets in doubt, audiences showed an astonishing appetite for nonfiction filmmaking. This year, more than 15 documentaries crossed the $1 million mark in theaters, ranging from high-profile concert films (such as Bruce Springsteen’s “Western Stars” and “Bring the Soul: The Movie”) to powerful human interest stories (“Maiden” and “The Biggest Little Farm”). Revolutionary “The Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson pushed the boundaries of the medium yet again, bringing fresh dimension to century-old World War I footage in his 3D doc “They Shall Not Grow Old”, while high-frame-rate eco doc “Aquarela” changed the way we look at water. All told, it was an incredibly strong year for documentaries, amid which Variety film critics Peter Debruge and Owen Gleiberman singled out these 10 as their favorites.

Renowned Texas singer-songwriter/visual artist Terry Allen has announced Just Like Moby Dick, his first album since 2013’s Bottom of the World. Featuring his longtime Panhandle Mystery band, Just Like Moby Dick was co-produced by Charlie Sexton and includes songs co-written by Joe Ely and Dave Alvin.
Allen has released two previews of the album, including the plainspoken sing-along ballad “Death of the Last Stripper,” which recalls the songwriter’s evocative narratives on cult-classic albums like 1979’s Lubbock (On Everything). Additionally, Allen has put out the song “City of the Vampires.

The story of Country Music Hall of Fame duo the Louvin Brothers will be told in a new biopic starring Ethan Hawke, according to Variety. Satan Is Real, currently in development, costars Hawke and Alessandro Nivola as sibling singers Charlie and Ira Louvin.
Best known for their 1958 album Satan Is Real, with its outrageous hellscape album cover, the Louvin Brothers were a study in conflict. While delivering songs like “The Christian Life” and “The Kneeling Drunkard’s Plea,” the siblings often quarreled and lived on the edge, particularly Ira, whose...

The tragic history of The Crow helped usher in a quarter century of comic book movies.
On May 13, 1994 The Crow, based on the comic book by James O’Barr, was released. At the time, comics-based movies -- the superhero variety or otherwise -- were in a slump. After the initial excitement following the massive success of Tim Burton’s Batman in 1989, that series had taken a darker turn with 1992’s Batman Returns, and the corresponding dip in box office had Warner Bros. Pictures preparing a far more kid-friendly and garish Batman Forever for 1995.
The Superman franchise had died a more gruesome death than even Doomsday itself could bestow with 1987’s Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, and as a result Krypton's last son lay dormant in re-development hell. As for iconic publishers like Marvel…let’s just say that the bargain-basement Captain America (1990) and the TV quickie...

Head over to Greenwich Village, go up Bleecker Street, just a few blocks past 6th Avenue, and then make a left. Keep walking until you get to 42 Carmine Street. That’s where you’ll find Rick Kelly. The Long Island native with the gray hair and the slightly oversized black t-shirt might be ambling around the retail section of the storefront, which he opened up in 1990. He might be talking to his elderly mom Dorothy, who balances the books, answers the phones and dusts the framed pics of Kelly standing...

“Carmine Street Guitars” is a one-of-a-kind documentary that exudes a gentle, homespun magic. It’s a no-fuss, 80-minute-long portrait of Rick Kelly, who builds and sells custom guitars out of a modest storefront on Carmine Street in New York’s Greenwich Village, and the film touches on obsessions that have been popping up, like fragrant weeds, in the world of documentary. “Carmine Street Guitars” is all about the weirdly grounded pleasures of analog culture; about the glory of hand-made artisanal objects in a world dominated by mass corporate production; about the aging, and persistence, of old-school jazz and rock ‘n’ roll; about the fading of bohemia in a world of rising rents, omnivorous bottom lines, and chain-store values; and about how all those themes fuse into a Zen ideal of doing what you love and loving what you do.
The film sounds earnest and touching in a minor, twilight-of-the-’60s way.

"You got any guitars for sale?" Abramorama has debuted an official trailer for an indie music documentary titled Carmine Street Guitars, made by Canadian filmmaker Ron Mann, profiling the iconic guitar store in NYC where Rick Kelly makes custom guitars. Kelly has been making guitars at his Greenwich Village shop for decades, "using preserved and repurposed wood scavenged from historic New York buildings. His list of customers is legendary, and many — Patti Smith Group co-founder Lenny Kaye, Eleanor Friedberger, Charlie Sexton, Bill Frisell, director and part-time guitarist Jim Jarmusch — show up to perform, talk gear, and tell stories about everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Bob Dylan." The doc shows us five days in the life of the iconic Greenwich Village store, examining an all-too-quickly vanishing way of life. Looks quite inspiring. When Ben Dickey returned home to his farm in Louisiana after spending months working on Ethan Hawke’s film Blaze, he fell into a depression. “I was still in a Blaze way,” says Dickey, who, after playing the role of Seventies country outsider Blaze Foley in his acting debut, says he began to assume some of Foley’s personal troubles even after the project ended.
“When it was over, I suffered from not knowing how to pull myself out of Blazetown,” he says. “I thought, the thing that I should do is wander.

The hopes of millions of The Big Lebowski fans were dashed earlier this week when it was revealed that tantalizing images of Jeff Bridges back in his Dude duds were not for some sort of sequel, but rather a Super Bowl commercial for Stella Artois. The Dude doesn’t even appear until halfway through the ad, which focuses on Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw character from Sex and The City.

Ryan Bingham is getting back in the saddle this winter as he prepares to release American Love Song, his first LP of new material in four years. The performer gets back to his gritty roadhouse roots on his latest song, “Jingle and Go.”
The new track, which will lead off the 15 songs on American Love Song, is a scruffy, scuzzy stomper that pays tribute to the rough-and-tumble education one gets from gigging around East Texas watering holes, which the New Mexico native did himself in his early days. Every so often you have to pinch yourself in this industry, and standing there, watching Ethan Hawke sing Waterloo Sunset live on a film set, was one such moment. The only downside was, as one of our favourite songs of all time, we had to listen to it about fifty times over. Which isn’t fun whoever is on lead vocals.
This indelible moment came on the set of Juliet, Naked – the latest cinematic adaptation from the work of Nick Hornby, directed by Jesse Peretz – the founding member of successful band The Lemonheads. We were fortunate enough to spend a day on the London set, where we spoke to Ethan Hawke, who plays has been singer-songwriter Tucker Crowe, and Rose Byrne, the lead role of Annie.
For Hawke, it was a character – and a world – he felt very close to, which he felt had a positive impact on his performance.

Lucinda Williams had been knocking around the music business for two decades by the time she released Car Wheels on a Gravel Road in the summer of 1998. By that point she had released four other solo albums, but she was still best known as the writer behind the Mary Chapin Carpenter hit “Passionate Kisses.” It was a time when country was going in an aggressively pop direction thanks to the enormous success of Shania Twain’s Come On Over, and Top 40 was just beginning to be consumed by the likes...

Before he was getting excellent reviews for his starring role in Blaze, Ben Dickey was really nervous. His indie music career had hit a wall, and he was working as a chef in Philadelphia when his friend Ethan Hawke suggested he star in a film about Blaze Foley, the outlaw singer who wrote classics like “If I Could Only Fly” before he was shot dead at age 39 in 1989. Hawke and Dickey had hatched the plan for during a drunken New Years Eve party. ” “I said, ‘It’d be a lot of work.

Ethan Hawke and Jimmy Fallon channeled Willie Nelson on Tuesday’s “Tonight Show,” performing “On the Road Again” in an elaborate spoof of the legendary country supergroup the Highwaymen. The skit also also featured “Blaze” costars Charlie Sexton as Kris Kristofferson and Ben Dickey as Waylon Jennings.
The skit was a typically lighthearted Fallon affair in which Hawke-as-Nelson takes on the 1979 song’s love of life on the road and all that comes with it, while Fallon-as-Cash plays contrarian, wanting to stay home and play games and drink.
The pair then try to get their companions to play tie-breaker, but they demur. “But hold on a sec/ If we stay here we can get trashed and play Fortnite,” Fallon sings.
“Wait, what is Fortnite?” Hawke offered back as Sexton and Dickey feigned confusion.
“Fortnite is an online, multi-player game where a flyin’ bus drops you off onto an island,” Fallon sang.
