Harry Potter star Leslie Phillips has died aged 98.
The actor – best known for lending his voice to the Sorting Hat in the Jk Rowling franchise – died on Monday (7 November).
Phillips had been struggling with illness for some time and previously survived two strokes. After suffering a life-threatening stroke in 2015, he had been recovering at home in recent years.
In a statement, his wife Zara Carr, 63, remembered her husband as a “national treasure”.
“I’ve lost a wonderful husband and the public has lost a truly great showman,” she said. “He was quite simply a national treasure. People loved him. He was mobbed everywhere he went.”
Fans will also recognise the actor, whose career spanned 75 years, from his roles in the bawdy Carry On film series, where he established his trademark phrases “ding dong” and “he-llo”.

To mark the 50th Anniversary of one of the most successful movie franchises of all time and as James Bond prepares for his 23rd official outing in Skyfall later this year, I have been tasked with taking a retrospective look at the films that turned author Ian Fleming’s creation into one of the most recognised and iconic characters in film history.
The sixth film in the series was to be inspired by Fleming’s 11th novel, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (Ohmss). Following the excesses of You Only Live Twice, the decision was made to take Bond back to his roots and make a faithful adaptation of Fleming’s original story with less reliance on gadgets and an emphasis on the love story at the heart of the novel.
Peter Hunt, who had already made his mark on the series by serving as editor for the previous films,...

Veteran British actor Leslie Phillips is anticipating an "unusual" first Christmas without his wife Angela Scoular following her death earlier this year.
The 87 year old was left in mourning in April when the former Bond girl died after drinking a corrosive cleaning liquid at their London home.
Phillips is looking forward to life "getting better" in 2012 and admits his first festive season without Scoular will be a challenge.
He tells Britain's Ok! magazine, "I just like to be at home, but it might be an unusual Christmas this year. I wouldn't mind something wild.
"It's been a hard year for everybody. I am smelling the possibility of it getting better next year. In spring there will be lovely yellow daffodils, and yellow is my favourite colour. It's Shakespeare's colour - nice and bright and all about new things."...

Angela Scoular played a happy-go-lucky bed mate for James Bond in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. In fact, her later years were marred by a myriad of personal problems.
James Bond fans lovingly recall actress Angela Scoular for her performance as Ruby, the air-headed but sexually insatiable girl bedded by James Bond (George Lazenby) in the 1969 007 classic On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Scoular died in April and a British coroner has revealed that Scoular's life and death were tragic in every way. Dispelling rumors that Scoular had committed suicide, the coroner ruled that she actually died from drinking a corrosive liquid cleaning agent that scalded her throat. She was deemed to have been in mental disarray when the action occurred. Scoular was facing numerous demons in her life including alcoholism, a battle with bowel cancer, depression and financial problems. She was married to British actor Leslie Phillips. Former Bond girl Angela Scoular died after drinking a corrosive cleaning liquid, an inquest has heard.
The wife of comedian Leslie Phillips was found unconscious at the couple's home in Maida Vale, London in April. Doctors fought to save her life in hospital but she was later pronounced dead.
At an inquest into her death at Westminster Coroner's Court earlier this week (begs18Jul11), Dr. Fiona Wilcox recorded a verdict that the actress ended her life "while the balance of her mind was disturbed".
The ruling came after the court heard Scoular suffered 40 per cent burns to her throat, body and dietary tract after drinking cleaning liquid, containing 91 per cent sulphuric acid, and pouring it over herself before falling down the stairs, fracturing her spine.
The 65 year old suffered from alcoholism, depression and lived in fear that her bowel cancer, which she beat in 2008, would return.
Phillips, 87, was too ill to attend the hearing, but wrote a statement explaining that the couple enjoyed a happy life, despite his wife's issues, stating, "Angela had been an alcoholic since I met her. She did stop drinking from time to time but would return to drinking. She was a nervous type of person, not confident. But she was a kind, generous person who would help me with my work and I would help with hers. She was lovely when she was sober."
Scoular played Ruby Bartlett in On Her Majesty's Secret Service in 1969.

Wuthering Heights star, Bond girl and Leslie Phillips's wife
Angela Scoular, who has died aged 65 after reportedly taking her own life, was known as the wife of the actor Leslie Phillips, but she also had several acting roles of her own that brought her public attention.
She twice played a "Bond girl". First, she took the part of Buttercup, sharing a bath with David Niven as James Bond, in the spoof, "unofficial" release Casino Royale (1966). Then she was the flirtatious farmer's daughter Ruby, bedded by once-only-007 George Lazenby, in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), which also featured the former Avenger Diana Rigg and the future New Avenger Joanna Lumley.
Scoular later had a regular role as Lady Agatha Shawcross in You Rang, M'Lord? the "upstairs, downstairs" sitcom set in the 1920s, from the Dad's Army creators Jimmy Perry and David Croft. As the mistress of Lord Meldrum (Donald Hewlett...

British actress Angela Scoular died after allegedly drinking poisonous chemicals in a suspected suicide attempt, according to a U.K. report.
The wife of comedian Leslie Phillips was taken to hospital on Monday after paramedics were called to deal with an emergency at the couple's London home. Doctors were unable to save her and she was later pronounced dead.
Police are treating her death as "unexplained" and detectives are currently investigating.
Reports suggest the former Bond girl, 65, who had been suffering from bowel cancer, took her own life by ingesting toxic chemicals, while Carry On star Phillips admits his wife was struggling to deal with her illness.
He tells Britain's Daily Mail, "I didn't know she was going to take her own life. I suspected that it was a possibility because she had gone under, into this deep sadness. She had had a ghastly time.
"She never got free of the illness. I felt very sorry for her. Other illnesses had started to creep in. After three years of cancer she was always getting something else.
"She did her best but it got her down. Cancer takes you to the lowest places. It's a very tough thing to live with. She was weakened by the cancer and then depressed, deeply depressed. She was all over the place."...
