The Writers Guild of America has tapped former presidents David Goodman and Chris Keyser to co-chair the guild’s negotiating committee, leading the fight on what are sure to be difficult bargaining with Hollywood’s major players in the first half of next year.
The WGA’s master contract covering most film and TV production is set to expire on May 1. With numerous economic issues and concerns about working conditions for middle-class writers, the negotiations are expected to be intense at a time when the TV and film sectors are in the throes of a messy transition to internet-delivered content on an increasingly on-demand basis.
Goodman, a showrunner known for his work with Seth MacFarlane on “Family Guy” and “The Orville,” is revered among WGA membership for successfully waging a three-year campaign against the top talent agencies that allowed the guild to ban the practice of agencies receiving packaging fees...

Actor Cameron Cowperthwaite is the subject of our latest Q&a, discussing his roles in the American Horror Story universe, playing Steven Hicks in Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story for Netflix, and more!
After appearing in American Horror Story in 2017, you're back to the AHS universe in the American Horror Stories episode "Necro." Can you talk about your experience on set and what drew you to the character of Charlie?
First, I love working with Ryan and his team. Everyone rotates shows, bounces around, and sticks around because the projects are so good. So when he calls, it's exciting because you know the project is going to be something special, and you get to see some friends you might not have seen in years! Set feels a little bit like going to summer camp in that way. Every experience is so different, but that was one of my favorite set experiences of my career.

With 1987's "Good Morning, Vietnam," Robin Williams had effectively conquered the long-held belief by many critics that his stream-of-consciousness brand of comedy was ill-suited to movies. In doing so, he'd also proven that he was capable of contrasting his dizzying flights of improvisation with moments of genuine gravitas. The question now was could he pull off a major dramatic role that wasn't tailored specifically for him?
This challenge arrived in 1989 with Peter Weir's "Dead Poets Society." Tom Schulman's tale of John Keating, a private school English teacher who encourages his teenage pupils to engage in verse-fueled non-conformity left no room for Williams's hyper-referential talents. He couldn't suddenly dip into a Jack Nicholson impersonation or goof on Michael Jackson. Even if he stuck to references within the era as he did on "Good Morning, Vietnam," it'd still be jarring. He'd cease to be Keating. This turned out to be quite the challenge for Williams.

"Dead Poets Society" is one of the most emotional movies I've ever seen. Every time I watch it, I'm reduced to a puddle of tears -- especially the ending where John Keating's students stand up on their desks and salute him with a rendition of "O Captain, My Captain" by Walt Whitman as their beloved teacher departs Welton Academy. But believe it or not, screenwriter Tom Schulman originally had an even sadder ending in mind.
Schulman participated in a retrospective celebrating the 30th anniversary of "Dead Poets Society" for Script Magazine in 2019, alongside star Ethan Hawke and director Peter Weir. During the retrospective, Schulman...

“You’re an unprincipled man,” the old rancher tells his reckless, short-tempered son. “You live just for yourself.” The younger one has just proposed quickly selling their large herd of diseased cattle before word gets out about the animals’ sickness, a despicable notion that takes his father aback. “It doesn’t take long to kill things,” the patriarch admonishes him. “Not like it does to grow.”

Oscar-winning screenwriter Tom Schulman has issued a strong endorsement for David Goodman for re-election as president of the Writers Guild of America West.
In an email to WGA West members Wednesday, Schulman took issue with the claim by the opposition Writers Forward Together slate that they have never seen the Guild so divided. “In my 33 years as a Guild member, I’ve never seen anything close to 7,000 members turn out to vote on anything,” he said. “Far from divided, we have unprecedented solidarity.”

To prevail on both fronts, he said Wednesday in an email blast to the guild’s members, they must re-elect WGA West president David A. Goodman and his entire team of running mates.
“If we can’t hold together now, after a 95% vote in support of this campaign — in a situation where, unlike in a normal strike, writers are working! — the companies will know we have little hope of maintaining solidarity or a successful strike threat against them next year — and probably not for a long time to come.”

30 years later, the Dead Poets Society lives on. The iconic movie that starred Robin Williams in one of his first dramatic roles and launched the careers of then-unknown-teen-actors Ethan Hawke, Josh Charles and Robert Sean Leonard came out June 2, 1989, and immediately became an enduring coming-of-age tale that's impact has only grown. In the 30 years since the boarding school dram debuted, the poets have moved on, but the experience of filming Dead Poets Society and working with the legendary Williams, who tragically committed suicide in 2014, has stayed with them throughout their careers. Written by Tom Schulman and directed by Peter Weir, Dead Poets Society,...

Of all the realistic outcomes of Oscar night, one of the most pleasing sights would be seeing Spike Lee on stage giving an acceptance speech. A five time Academy Award nominee (including three just this year), Lee is one of the highest profile filmmakers never to have been given a competitive statue. He has an Honorary Oscar, but it’s not the same. Up for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay for BlacKkKlansman, this is the best chance yet to see Lee get a moment in the sun. Can it happen? We’ll be discussing just that possibility next, so read on… Last night, I attended An Evening With Spike Lee, highlighted by a conversation between Lee and Lawrence O’Donnell, followed by a screening of BlacKkKlansman. Lee knows how to entertain a crowd, so it’s worth noting that Academy members who saw him on the awards...

After three decades of making movies, Spike Lee is finally an Oscar-nominated director. He’s also finally a director with a Best Picture nominee. The filmmaker earned these long-overdue first nominations for “BlacKkKlansman,” but the general consensus among cinephiles is that Lee should have scored nominations for Best Director and Best Picture at the 63rd Academy Awards for “Do The Right Thing.” Lee was overlooked for Best Director that year in favor of Oliver Stone (“Born on the Fourth of July”), Woody Allen (“Crimes and Misdemeanors”), Peter Weir (“Dead Poets Society”), Kenneth Branagh (“Henry V”), and Jim Sheridan (“My Left Foot”).
In the wake of Lee’s historic Oscar nomination, a clip from the 1990 Oscars is going viral for featuring actress Kim Basinger calling out the Academy live on air for snubbing “Do The Right Thing.” “Driving Miss Daisy” won Best Picture at the Oscars that year, with the other...

After over three decades of directing movies, Spike Lee has finally earned his first Oscar nomination for Best Director. The 61-year-old filmmaker broke into the race with his acclaimed historical drama “BlacKkKlansman,” which won Lee the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival last year. “BlacKkKlansman” also earned Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Editing, and Adam Driver as Best Supporting Actor.
While Lee was awarded an Honorary Academy Award in 2016, he has yet to ever win a competitive Oscar. The director’s nomination for “BlacKkKlansman” is his first since “4 Little Girls” was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 1998 Academy Awards. Lee co-directed the film with Samuel D. Pollard.
Lee’s only other prior Oscar nomination was for writing “Do The Right Thing,” which earned him a nom for Best Original Screenplay at the 1990 Oscars. Lee lost the award to “Dead Poets Society,...

After her Writers Guild Awards loss, Greta Gerwig can rebound with a win at Sunday’s BAFTA Awards for her “Lady Bird” script. Should she pull through, she’d only be the fourth woman to win Best Original Screenplay in BAFTA history.
BAFTA split its Best Screenplay category into original and adapted in 1983 and since then, Shawn Slovo (“A World Apart” [1988]), Nora Ephron (“When Harry Met Sally…” [1989]) and Diablo Cody (“Juno” [2007]) are the only female writers who’ve won Best Original Screenplay. No women won BAFTA’s single screenplay category when it existed from 1968 through ’82.

The first day of production on Dead Poets Society was such a disaster, its sets were burned down...
One of the late Robin Williams' most beloved films is Peter Weir's Dead Poets Society. In the movie, Williams played John Keating, the unorthodox teacher at a 1959 boys prep school. Even just writing those words makes me want to stand on a table and proclaim "oh captain my captain."
As with many loved movies though, there's a story or two lying behind the success of Dead Poets Society (a movie that Dustin Hoffman was once upon a time going to star in and direct). In particular, after one day of shooting, it looked like the film wasn't going to happen at all. As screenwriter Tom Schulman told From Script To Screen at the University Of California, Revenge Of The Nerds director Jeff Kanew was set to direct at one stage,...

Making a creditable dramatic theater debut in an underwhelming project, Jason Sudeikis puts his own gentle funnyman spin on John Keating, the inspirational English teacher at the starchy all-boys preparatory school in Dead Poets Society. That role's indelible association with Robin Williams, who played the character onscreen in Peter Weir's 1989 film, turns out to be less of a snag than the material itself. Director John Doyle brings his customary stripped-down elegance to the production, and elicits sensitive performances from the young actors playing Keating's students. But Tom Schulman's thin adaptation of his Oscar-winning screenplay exposes its contrivances...

In the production at the Classic Stage Company, Sudeikis will take on the role of John Keating. This was the same part for which Robin Williams earned an Academy Award nomination in 1989. The play’s director John Doyle said in a statement, “I felt it important that we find an actor like Jason who brings a fresh perspective, and all at Csc are delighted that he will be joining us for this unique venture.” The script for Dead Poets Society will come from a familiar pen, as Tom Schulman - who earned an Oscar for Best Screenplay - will adapt it for stage. No other casting details have been released. Dead Poets Society will go into previews on October 27, with the opening slated...

When Pulp Fiction opened in theaters 20 years ago today, the mainstream moviegoing audience was introduced to a dynamic new Hollywood talent. Quentin Tarantino was a 31-year-old hipster whose formal film education never rose much higher than working as a clerk in a Manhattan Beach video store. A walking encyclopedia of film history who fetishized some of the more obscure genres, Tarantino had a gift for dialog and his own visual toolbox that expanded the language of cinematic storytelling. The Best Picture nominee earned an Oscar for screenwriter Tom Schulman, as well as nods for director Peter Weir and Robin Williams, who stars as English teacher John Keating—the man who taught more than just his prep-school students the meaning of the phrase carpe diem (“seize the day”). Yes, another day, another anniversary. But this one is quite noteworthy. Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing" turns 25 on Monday. It is a film I first saw when I was young, but I wasn't at all ready for it. I saw it again in film school and noticed I had grown with it, but it still whipped up complex feelings (as only the best films can). I've revisited it a number of times over the years and come to cherish it as one of the greatest pieces of cinema ever conjured, but the Academy frankly seemed like it was holding its nose just to give it the two nominations it received a quarter century ago. Kim Basinger had the right idea when the night of the Oscars came. "The best film of the year is not even nominated [for Best Picture] and it's 'Do the Right Thing,'" the "Batman" star said,...

The film that proved Robin Williams could be a solid dramatic actor and also taught us to all love literature comes to Blu-ray looking great and just as powerful. 1989.s Dead Poets Society was directed by Peter Weir (The Truman Show) and was written by Tom Schulman (Medicine Man). O Captain! The Movie Pool goes to school on the Dead Poets Society Blu-ray!

The Delivery
Over twenty years after its release, Dead Poets Society holds up incredibly well as a modern classic. Featuring an Oscar-nominated performance by Robin Williams, the film is an earnest, inspirational tale that never drifts into sappy sentimentality. That is a credit to the smart screenplay by Tom Schulman and the guiding hand of director Peter Weir, who provide an excellent audio commentary on the Blu-ray.
After all these years, I am surprised how much of the film has entered American pop culture. English teachers might argue otherwise, but the film popularized the phrases "Seize the day" and "O Captain! My Captain!" to our current generation.

Chicago – I worry that future generations will only know Robin Williams for his late-career missteps like “Old Dogs,” one of the most truly reprehensible excuses for a film in the last ten years. Believe it or not kiddies, there once was a time when the man formerly known as Mork was one of our most interesting actors, a guy who spoke for creative freedom and starred in a string of critical hits, two of which were recently released on Blu-ray.

Though disarming in appearance, actor Kurtwood Smith.s two best-known big-screen roles are memorable villains. He was the psychotic Clarence in Robocop in 1988 and played a very different scoundrel the next year in Dead Poet Society where he was the unforgettable Mr. Perry, the overbearing bully father of aspiring actor Neil (played by Robert Sean Leonard) who meets a tragic end. He played a comedy variation on that role as the conservative, tough-loving dad on the TV sitcom That .70.s Show from 1998 to 2006.
