The 1962 sitcom "The Beverly Hillbillies" was the first in show creator Paul Henning's unofficial Hooterville Trilogy, a triune that also included 1963's "Petticoat Junction," and 1965's "Green Acres." These three shows were among the most popular of their time and reflected a cultural clash between a growing class of cosmopolitan urbanites and "down home" rural Americans. Working thematically backward, "Green Acres" was about a pair of New Yorkers who move onto a farm, "Petticoat Junction" was about rural hotel owners who often butted heads with a rich railroad executive, and "The Beverly Hillbillies" was about rural characters moving to Beverly Hills. The Hooterville Trilogy was as sure a sign as any that schisms were forming in American society, and Henning was eager to address the injustice of the class divides, often sympathizing with his hillbillies and lambasting the wealthy.

"The Beverly Hillbillies" is the platonic ideal of a high-concept sitcom hook. At its essence, it's simply "Poor folks get stinking rich and move to Beverly Hills." That's probably all CBS needed to hear from creator Paul Henning, who, between 1962 and 1971, exploited this simple premise to the tune of nine seasons and 274 episodes. During this span, "The Beverly Hillbillies" was one of the top-rated shows on TV.
How could such a simple premise, which was never really tweaked, sustain a series for nearly a decade? This question perpetually flummoxed the nation's TV critics, who generally loathed the show, but anyone who gorged on "The Beverly Hillbillies" throughout their formative couch potato years (during its initial run or via syndication) knows the answer is obvious: it's the cast, stupid.

Who doesn’t love a good rags-to-riches story? In 1962, CBS struck gold with The Beverly Hillbillies, a sitcom about a backwoods family who packed up and moved from the Ozarks to California after finding oil on their land. Jed Clampett and his colorful relatives quickly became iconic TV characters and are still loved by fans more than 60 years after the show premiered. Given that it’s been decades since the show aired, most of the cast is no longer with us. However, one Beverly Hillbillies cast member – Max Baer Jr. – is still living in 2023.

It was the battle of the Stephens at the 27th annual Tony Awards telecast March 25, 1973 on ABC from the Imperial Theatre. In one corner was Stephen Sondheim’s glorious and exquisite romantic musical “A Little Night Music” based on Ingmar Bergman’s 1955 comedy “Smiles of a Summer Night.” And in the other corner, 25-year-old Stephen Schwartz’s hip, cool, Fosse Fosse Fosse musical “Pippin.”

The Beverly Hillbillies aired on CBS from 1962 to 1971. The TV series centered on Jed Clampett, a poor widow living with his daughter and mother-in-law in the Ozarks. When he strikes it rich after finding oil on his property, Jed moves his family, including cousin Jethro Bodine, to Beverly Hills. The seven-time Emmy-nominated series was a huge hit and made stars of Buddy Ebsen (who played Jed Clampett), Donna Douglas (Elly May Clampett), Irene Ryan (Granny), and Max Baer Jr. (Jethro). Today, Baer is the only cast member still alive. Learn more about what he’s done since The Beverly Hillbillies, and find out Max Baer Jr.’s net worth.

Back when TV viewers were limited to three channel options, a silly show called The Beverly Hillbillies started at the top of the Nielsen ratings and stayed there for nine years. Panned by critics, the quirky comedy entertained audiences and made several actors famous. So, are any Beverly Hillbillies cast members still alive?

The killer moved in plain sight on the foggy morning of Sept. 6, 1982, in the tiny southeast Alaskan fishing village of Craig.
Hours after shooting his eight victims with what police believe was a .22-caliber pistol or rifle, he fired up the engines on the 58-foot fishing boat Investor, waving nonchalantly to a nearby skipper as he moved the vessel — with his victims’ bodies inside — to a secluded bay a mile outside of town.

It’s not a mystery how the Coulthurst family and a group of teenage deckhands were killed on their fishing boat, Investor, on Sept. 6, 1982, in the tiny southeast Alaskan fishing village of Craig.
What remains unknown, more than 35 years later, is who did it — and why.
“You never stop thinking about them,” says Dave Freeman, who grew up with Jerome Keown and Dave Moon, two of the massacre’s eight victims.
“The shock of losing everyone really tore up our town,” Freeman tells People. “They all had their whole lives in front of them, and they were just blown away.

Thirty-five years have passed since the massacre of eight people on the fishing boat Investor first shocked the nation. For those whose lives were upended by the killings, the case remains a painful cloud that refuses to lift.
For John Peel, the former deckhand who police and prosecutors suspected of committing the grisly slayings, the mystery is something else: a question mark that still hangs over his head.
Peel was charged with the killings in 1984, but after two expensive, headline-grabbing trials, he was found not guilty. Decades later, the case is Alaska’s worst unsolved mass homicide.

Another summer movie season and another Pirates of the Caribbean movie. What? You didn’t know there was yet another in the franchise that wore out its welcome a long time ago? Yes, Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales came and went awfully fast this summer, never a good sign. It played in St. Petersburg for about a week and then vanished. Did anybody see it? I didn’t and I’ve seen a lot of movies this summer. In a summer of Wonder Woman and Dunkirk, as well as Baby Driver, Logan Lucky and Detroit it would be very easy for another Pirates of the Caribbean movie to get lost in the shuffle.
So let’s talk about a real pirate movie, from 1952 Blackbeard the Pirate, directed by Raoul Walsh and starring Robert Newton, Linda Darnell, William Bendix, and Keith Andes. Newton is to pirate movies...

New York City – Robert Osborne, one of the great film advocates and historians of our era, who hosted on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) with passionate skill from 1994 until recently, has passed away on March 6th, 2017, in New York City. The way that Mr. Osborne inspired film lovers everywhere was deep and influential. He was 84.
I was lucky enough to meet the man, naturally at a Chicago movie theater, back in 2005. Five years later, as I became a film reporter myself, I got to interview Ro via phone. He was the type of film man that you could spend a month with and never come to the end of his knowledge, and the way he shared it as the host on TCM was as if the finest uncle was giving us life lessons. Next to Roger Ebert, Robert Osborne is another reporter legend who galvanized my love for film.

Robert Walker: Actor in MGM films of the '40s. Robert Walker: Actor who conveyed boy-next-door charms, psychoses At least on screen, I've always found the underrated actor Robert Walker to be everything his fellow – and more famous – MGM contract player James Stewart only pretended to be: shy, amiable, naive. The one thing that made Walker look less like an idealized “Average Joe” than Stewart was that the former did not have a vacuous look. Walker's intelligence shone clearly through his bright (in black and white) grey eyes. As part of its “Summer Under the Stars” programming, Turner Classic Movies is dedicating today, Aug. 9, '15, to Robert Walker, who was featured in 20 films between 1943 and his untimely death at age 32 in 1951. Time Warner (via Ted Turner) owns the pre-1986 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer library (and almost got to buy the studio outright in 2009), so most of Walker's movies have...

Some may say that television hasn’t been too good to senior citizens in terms of their stereotypical depictions. Regardless of the unflattering portrayals there had been some memorable oldsters (in this case over 60) that have given us equal shares of both laughs and cries. In “For Mature Audiences Only”, let’s take a look at some of the more mature characterizations that had an impact on our daily doses of entertainment on the glorious boob tube.
Instead of doing a typical top ten or top twenty listing let’s go in between with a top fifteen selection, shall we? The “For Mature Audiences Only” choices are not necessarily a tasting that everyone will agree on. Perhaps you have your own preferences that were omitted or something that you feel should be added? Anyway, here are the candidates in alphabetical order…

Ugh, can you believe it? American Idol is back to giving us hour-long Thursday episodes. I thought these salad days of two-hour, Ben Hur-like installments would never end, but I was wrong. Scott Savol wrong.
But girl, Harry Connick Jr. still found the time to slay us with one-liners, like an actual adult we’d actually enjoy spending time with. The adult-iness of the rapport at the Idol judges’ table can’t be underestimated. Polite puns. Knowing asides. Incisive commentary on each other’s commentary. Remember, it was only a year ago that Nicki Minaj yelled obscenities while Mariah Carey muttered Mean Girls references at no one. I like Nicki and love Mariah, but that was more painful than any Lazaro Arbos ballad. This season is like a sweet, saucy, fun-loving Allison Iraheta take on “Hot Stuff.” You know I don’t say that about everyone.
Thursday’s Atlanta auditions were solid!

Special effects legend Ray Harryhausen, whose dazzling and innovative visual effects work on fantasy adventure films such as Jason And The Argonauts and The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad passed away last month at age 92. In 1933, the then-13-year-old Ray Harryhausen saw King Kong at a Hollywood theater and was inspired – not only by Kong, who was clearly not just a man in a gorilla suit, but also by the dinosaurs. He came out of the theatre “stunned and haunted. They looked absolutely lifelike … I wanted to know how it was done.” It was done by using stop-motion animation: jointed models filmed one frame at a time to simulate movement. Harryhausen was to become the prime exponent of the technique and its combination with live action. I have always been a great admirer of Paul Henning, the crooner-turned-tv producer/writer of some of the best-loved shows of the 1960s. It was Henning who gave a voice to rural audiences by creating such classic TV series as The Beverly Hillbilllies, Petticoat Junction and Green Acres. If you revisit any of them today, they remain far superior to most contemporary sitcoms. Henning not only created shows that have timeless appeal, but he also brainstormed the concept of interweaving characters and plot devices between the series- a stroke of genius that brought cross-promotion marketing to new levels. Henning also prided himself on making his country characters eccentric, but never idiotic. They were simple people living simple lives and if they seemed to exist in a time warp, they were all honest, admirable folks. It was always the sophisticated city slickers who would get their comeuppance at...

Paulette Goddard (r.) is Celestine in Diary of a Chambermaid.
Legendary director Jean Renoir’s (The Rules of the Game) 1946 drama-romance film of Octave Mirbeau’s 1900 novel Diary of a Chambermaid was adapted for the screen by one of its co-stars, Burgess Meredith of Rocky fame. We imagine that Rocky himself would utter an enthusiastic “Yo!” if he heard the Renoir classic was finally making its official DVD and Blu-ray debut!
Paulette Goddard (Modern Times) plays the title character, a sexy and saucy servant named Celestine, whose forthrightness has a curious effect on a wealthy Parisian household. Determined to elevate her lot in life, Celestine uses her unsubtle charms to beguile the master of the household. Meredith is on board as Captain Mauger, the bizarre and shell-shocked neighbor, while Judith Anderson (Rebecca) appears as the mistress of the household.

This week on Project Runway is a dream for those of us who have been watching for all previous nine seasons, as some of our favorite ladies from the past are going to be coming back to be the clients for the challenge. It’s also going to be a partner challenge, which is almost always absolute hell for everyone! Rejoice in the drama!
Heidi meets the contestants on the runway rocking a shiny gold top – she is the best! – and says their challenge this week will involve making an “elegant” runway look, which Kooan says makes him nervous. Oh, Kooan. Kooan is this season’s token kooky designer, and I normally always find the kooky designers enjoyable. They make things interesting. Still, even the kooky designers should be able to do elegant – or at least believe they can do elegant.

Earl Scruggs, the banjo playing, singing and composing great whose twanging bluegrass themes for TV's The Beverly Hillbillies and the Bonnie and Clyde movie achieved Top of the Chart status in the '60s, died Wednesday of natural causes at a Nashville hospital, his son Gary Scruggs told CNN. He was 88. "It's not just bluegrass, it's American music," bluegrass fan-turned-country star Dierks Bentley told the Associated Press about Scruggs's output. "There's 17- or 18-year-old kids turning on today's country music and hearing that banjo and they have no idea where that came from. That sound has probably always been there...

The following Q&A contains major spoilers from Friday night’s series finale of NBC’s Chuck.
Well, Chuck me. It’s all over.
NBC’s beloved spy comedy wrapped up its five-year run on Friday night, with a first hour that was full of thrills and chills and a second episode that, in the very end, was full of heart. Which finale scene was set in stone a while back? What hidden “Easter eggs” might watchful fans have caught? And perhaps most critically, what should we make of that closing scene? Series creators Josh Schwartz and Chris Fedak answer those questions and others.

Big kudos to the fine folks at MGM Limited Edition DVD-r! They’ve dug deep in the vaults for a true oddity in the world of cinema and television ( sitcoms, to be more precise ) ! I will tell anyone who asks that my absolute favorite TV situation comedy of all time is that early sixties gem ” The Dick Van Dyke Show” ( desert island, only one TV comedy, no hesitation! ). Well one of the few people with even more admiration and affection for this bit of comic perfection is comedy writer and pop culture master Mark Evanier. One of the sites I’ve bookmarked ( and if you love entertainment you should too ) is his website/ blog newsfromme.com . In 2007 he alerted his readers to Don”T Worry We’LL Think Of A Title was airing on the Turner Classic Movie cable channel. He had seen it with his family while they were...

Things I never anticipated seeing on The X Factor‘s second set of “Judges’ Houses” episodes: A microphone stand crashing against elegant pool tiles without making the slightest sound. A ragtag group of 10 children gleefully laying waste to the legacy of beloved music duo Hall & Oates. And a scene set in an elaborately staged junk yard featuring a quaint, handpainted sign with the word “Garbage” leaning against a dumpster.
But there were predictable aspects of X Factor’s latest telecast as well: A carefully groomed and gussied Nicole Sherbetzingy kept her face in a perpetual mask of squinted eye, quivering lip,...

Chicago – Hurricane Irene caused some drops in the number of attendees out on the east coast this weekend, but “The Help” was still able to come in at number one at the box office, marking the second week in a row where the film led the pack. This is quite the accomplishment considering the film finished in second place in its debut weekend and came in as the front runner in its second and third weeks in the theaters.
The numbers don’t lie: This weekend was affected a great deal by the bad weather out east. While “The Help” was number one, it only brought in $14.3 million, making it the second lowest number one film at the box office in 2011, only ahead of the February 25-27 number one film, Hall Pass ($13.5 million).

When it comes to financing your college acting training, perhaps the two most useful rules of thumb are "Ask questions" and "Think ahead."Unless you were born into wealth and your parents can afford to send you to whatever school you choose, you'll need to explore all your options for paying tuition, room and board, and incidental expenses. Once you're enrolled in an actor-training program, you should be concentrating on your growth as an artist, not worrying about how to pay for it. Communicating with your parents and the school's financial advisers is essential. If you don't know how your bills will be paid—or how much you'll owe post-graduation—keep asking questions until you do.As you evaluate potential schools, be aware of their relative costs. If you're talented enough to be accepted by a prestigious but expensive program, you don't necessarily have to opt for something cheaper. But...

Frankly, the TV world hasn't been very kind to grandparents. Depictions have ranged from the cranky to overly eccentric -- there aren't too many grandpops taking the kids to the local fishin' hole. Think of Irene Ryan's Granny from 'The Beverly Hillbillies' and you get our drift.
Still, even if they are a bit ornery or kooky, we still love our grandparents. Since today's National Grandparents Day, we decided to celebrate by naming a few of our favorite grandfolks from television over the years. We hope you love them too.

Chicago – Turner Classic Movies, the basic cable gift to film buffs everywhere, is launching their first TCM Classic Movie Festival in Hollywood, August 22nd-25th. TCM’s main movie host and face of the network, Robert Osborne, will be there.
Osborne became the film guru we know today through a roundabout career route. Born in Washington state, he took his degree in journalism down to Hollywood during the late 1950s in hopes of becoming an actor. He hooked up with the famous Desilu studios, the brainchild of Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball during the height of the “I Love Lucy” days.
It was Lucille Ball herself that encouraged Osborne to switch careers – Osborne himself said “especially when she saw me act” – and take his love for film to a writing career for various publications including the Hollywood Reporter.
