Elegant Hollywood actor whose prolific career in the 1950s included the sci-fi classic It Came from Outer Space
In the 1950s, the elegant actor Barbara Rush, who has died aged 97, was extremely visible in films (she made 22 during the decade) and in fan magazines, especially during her marriage to the screen heartthrob Jeffrey Hunter. However, although she appeared opposite some of the top male stars of the day, she did not seem to have that extra je ne sais quoi needed to attain top-drawer status herself.
She met and fell in love with Hunter, who had just been put under contract by 20th Century Fox, a short time after her arrival in Hollywood, signed up by the Paramount studio. They were married in December 1950 before either of them had been seen on screen.

Rock Hudson was one of the biggest stars of the 1950’s and 60s: the most handsome leading man who romanced the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Doris Day, Jane Wyman, Barbara Rush, Julie Andrews and Gina Lollobrigida on the silver screen. But he was living a secret life off-screen — he was gay.
The new Max/HBO documentary “Rock Hudson All That Heaven Allowed” examines his double life and the lengths that were taken to ensure his LGBTQ+ identity wasn’t revealed It wasn’t until 1985 did the truth make the headlines when he became the first famous Hollywood star to die of AIDs.
Barbara Rush, who appeared in three films with Hudson including 1954’s “Magnificent Obsession,” told me in a 2019 L.A. Times interview that it was no secret in Tinseltown that he was gay. “His agent [Henry Willson] decided that there had been enough about the rumors about Rock being gay.

It’s one of the year’s most awaited discs: the recent restored and remastered The War of the Worlds ’53 in a glorious 4K Ultra HD edition. A second Blu-ray disc of When Worlds Collide ’51 is too good to be called a bonus extra: this edition looks better than anything seen since original Technicolor prints. In one show we endure scurvy invaders from The Red Planet; in the other a rogue Astral Body threatens Earth with obliteration, necessitating escape on a space ship. Don’t bother checking online for tickets, the flight is sold out. CineSavant has the lowdown for collectors: how good does the new release look?

At the opening of “Taza, Son of Cochise,” (1954), it’s 1875 and the great Apache Chief Cochise (Jeff Chandler) is dying. At his side are his two sons, Taza (Rock Hudson) and Naiche. He asks them to continue the peace he made with the White Eyes after his death. Naturally, if the two sons were in agreement the movie would have ended right there. But in fact, they don’t agree. Taza wants to do as his father said. But Naiche hates the white man and intends to side up with Grey Eagle (Morris Ankrum) and Geronimo (Ian MacDonald) and start the war up again. If that isn’t enough complication to make a movie out of, writers George Drayson Adams and George Zuckerman add in a rivalry between the two brothers over the affections of Oona (Barbara Rush), Grey Eagle’s beautiful daughter.

George Pal’s second science fiction classic has conceptual imagination and visual wonder to spare, along with a million awkward and dated details. When rogue planets threaten to obliterate the Earth, a super-Ark spaceship is built to spirit forty ‘chosen ones’ to safety. The Ark passengers have the right stuff, but you may be enraged by the rigged process to select who gets to go. Gee-whiz spectacle is the order of the day — how many End Of The World movies actually show terra firma expunged from the Solar System? Barbara Rush and John Hoyt are the acting standouts, but top honors go to Pal’s visual effect artists and designers.

Great 3-D thrills — Hollywood was working to perfect 3-D movies just as the craze died out. An impeccable Blu-ray 3-D restoration, the glory of young Rock Hudson and some of the best Utah scenery in depth makes this a very enjoyable disc. Director Douglas Sirk was itching to do a western, and the swiftly rising star Rock Hudson wanted to work for him again, even though it meant playing another Indian role. Were these men that desperate to get out of Hollywood for a month? At least they avoided filming in nuclear test sites…

Here’s a quick trivia question for you. Who won the first Best Actress Emmy?
If you were thinking Loretta Young, Lucille Ball or even Imogene Coca, you’d be far off the mark.
It was none other than Gertrude Berg. The actress/writer/producer/creator was named best actress for her beloved sitcom “The Goldbergs” at the 1951 Emmy Awards. In fact, she had played the role of the warm matriarch of the Jewish immigrant family for nearly two decades when she picked up the statuette. The year before, the series was nominated for best kinescope show but lost to “Texaco Star Theater” hosted by Uncle Miltie.
Of course, these days Berg is nearly a forgotten figure. And audiences only know of the popular ABC series “The Goldbergs” about a Jewish family in the 1980s. Aviva Kempner, the director of the well-received 2009 documentary “Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg” told me for a L.

When he founded the California Film Institute in 1977, Mark Fishkin didn’t know much about running a film festival. Not many people did — there were few major film festivals in the United States at the time, and it would be decades before there emerged anything like today’s bustling international festival circuit. Fishkin had recently moved to California from the small town of Ouray, Colo., about an hour’s drive to Telluride the long way around Mt. Sneffels. He’d visited once or twice while the festival was on, by chance, and had seen how they did things out there and it inspired him, when he founded a festival of his own, to do things a little differently.
The first Mill Valley Film Festival took place Aug. 11-13, 1978, and was intended, according to an article in the San Francisco Chronicle from that summer, to “honor successful filmmakers living or working out of Marin County,...

One of the strangest ‘uplifting moral tales’ of the 1950s was a huge hit, and launched Rock Hudson as a major star. Criterion’s deluxe presentation puts it on a par with world cinema, mawkish Kitsch-o-Rama and all. Comes with a restored copy of the slightly less head-spinning 1935 version, too. Co-stars Jane Wyman, Barbara Rush, Agnes Moorehead, and Otto Kruger, whose moral guidance has something to do with ‘contacting one’s power source.’ Oh, it’s about recharging my iPhone!

Mubi's series, In the Realm of Melodrama: A Douglas Sirk Retrospective, is showing April 2 - June 20, 2018 in the United Kingdom and many other countries. The mythos of director Douglas Sirk—cold leftist emigré subverting hammy melodramatic conventions and sickly Hollywood homilies from within—has never been in alignment with Sirk himself, let alone the thirty-some movies he made for Ufa, Universal-International, Columbia, and the independent companies that belatedly, unceremoniously greeted him several years after his prewar arrival in the Us. In Sirk, who lived another 28 years after his health forced him to retire from cinema, there likely existed the same antinomies as are evident in his films. What makes him a fascinating figure is that it is possible to see the guy, in interviews and press materials for the movies, as the articulate iconoclast, the aloof and erudite artist who found himself at the helm of many of a...

The blacklist strikes back as both writer Ben Maddow and director Martin Ritt examine the booming ’50s phenomenon of The Suburbs. No money up front will get you into an ‘estate’ of your dreams, provided you’re white. Possibly a little too direct in its messaging of sickness in the American dream, much of what we see in the ticky-tacky subdivision of Sunrise Hills will ring true to those of us who lived it.

Valentine’s Day is bringing horror and sci-fi fans numerous gifts this Tuesday in the form of a ton of great Blu-ray and DVD releases. One of my favorites from 2016, the Academy Award-nominated Arrival, hits 4K Blu-ray, as well as traditional Blu-ray and DVD formats, this week courtesy of Paramount, and Universal Studios Home Entertainment has given the cult sci-fi classic It Came From Outer Space the HD treatment as well.
Other notable home entertainment titles arriving on February 14th include Stake Land II, Star Trek: Enterprise: The Complete Collection, Blood Brothers, Creature Lake, Freshwater, The Horde, and The Crooked Man.

'Broadcast News' with Albert Brooks and Holly Hunter: Glib TV news watch. '31 Days of Oscar': 'Broadcast News' slick but superficial critics pleaser (See previous post: “Phony 'A Beautiful Mind,' Unfairly Neglected 'Swing Shift': '31 Days of Oscar'.”) Heralded for its wit and incisiveness, James L. Brooks' multiple Oscar-nominated Broadcast News is everything the largely forgotten Swing Shift isn't: belabored, artificial, superficial. That's very disappointing considering Brooks' highly addictive Mary Tyler Moore television series (and its enjoyable spin-offs, Phyllis and Rhoda), but totally expected considering that three of screenwriter-director Brooks' five other feature films were Terms of Endearment, As Good as It Gets, and Spanglish. (I've yet to check out I'll Do Anything and the box office cataclysm How Do You Know starring Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, and Jack Nicholson.) Having said that, Albert Brooks (no relation to James L.; or to Mel Brooks...

Teresa Wright in 'Shadow of a Doubt': Alfred Hitchcock heroine (image: Joseph Cotten about to strangle Teresa Wright in 'Shadow of a Doubt') (See preceding article: "Teresa Wright Movies: Actress Made Oscar History.") After scoring with The Little Foxes, Mrs. Miniver, and The Pride of the Yankees, Teresa Wright was loaned to Universal – once initial choices Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland became unavailable – to play the small-town heroine in Alfred Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt. (Check out video below: Teresa Wright reminiscing about the making of Shadow of a Doubt.) Co-written by Thornton Wilder, whose Our Town had provided Wright with her first chance on Broadway and who had suggested her to Hitchcock; Meet Me in St. Louis and Junior Miss author Sally Benson; and Hitchcock's wife, Alma Reville, Shadow of a Doubt was based on "Uncle Charlie," a story outline by Gordon McDonell – itself based on actual events.

Maximilian Schell dead at 83: Best Actor Oscar winner for ‘Judgment at Nuremberg’ (photo: Maximilian Schell ca. 1960) Actor and filmmaker Maximilian Schell, best known for his Oscar-winning performance as the defense attorney in Stanley Kramer’s 1961 political drama Judgment at Nuremberg died at a hospital in Innsbruck, Austria, on February 1, 2014. Born on December 8, 1930, in Vienna, Maximilian Schell was the younger brother of future actor Carl Schell and Maria Schell, who would become an international film star in the 1950s (The Last Bridge, Gervaise, The Hanging Tree). Douglas Sirk movies: ‘Imitation of Life,’ ‘Written on the Wind’ (photo: Lana Turner, Juanita Moore, Karin Dicker in ‘Imitation of Life’) Douglas Sirk is Turner Classic Movies’ Director of the Evening. The German-born (April 26, 1897, in Hamburg) filmmaker has developed a cult following in recent decades after his "women’s pictures" were reappraised by some critics as works of profound social criticism filled with auteuristic touches. Why it would take years (or decades) for people to realize the obvious is a little mind-boggling, until you remember that movies about women and their issues have been, for the most part, relegated to the sidelines. A stupid prejudice that continues to this very day. My statement, by the way, has nothing to do with yikesy political correctness; if you don’t believe me, just check out the Best Picture Academy Award winners or Palme d’Or winners or Golden Lion winners or Golden...

Mackenzie Rosman is best known for her role on "7th Heaven" as the adorable, curly-cued, originally youngest Camden child, Ruthie. But five years after the long-running WB series about a Protestant minister's family came to an end, the actress is proving she's all grown up.
Now 23-year-old Rosman, who starred on "7th Heaven" for 11 seasons (appearing in all but five of the show's 243 episodes), stripped down for Maxim's September 2013 issue to promote her new Syfy movie "Ghost Shark" (premieres August 22) and to look back on her formative years.
Rosman was just seven years old when she started her stint on "7th Heaven," but once the show ended, her image changed, thanks to a leaked photo of her in lingerie and another of her kissing another woman.
In recent years, Rosman's reunited with some fellow "7th Heaven" alumni: She had a multi-episode arc as a not-so-virginal high schooler named Zoe on...

While adored by the French and the Cahiers Du Cinema coterie that went on to become the rebellious French New Wave -- which spawned the oft-quoted Jean-Luc Godard phrase "cinema is Nicholas Ray" -- the American filmmaker never really received his due outside of the one film of his that most moviegoers have seen (and even then, they’re possibly unaware that he directed it): “Rebel Without A Cause.” And while that iconic 1950s film, with its audacious, expressionistic colors, its passionate angst and anguish, its mix of quiet machismo and vulnerability, is perhaps the cornerstone of many of Nicholas Ray’s films -- vibrant melodrama on the surface, percolating emotional agony within -- it’s certainly just the tip of iceberg when it comes to the director’s career.
Starting out as a would-be actor, Ray moved to moved to New York where he appeared in the great Elia Kazan's theater debut.

Bigger Than Life
Directed by Nicholas Ray
United States, 1956
Leonard Cohen’s song Story of Isaac recontextualizes the biblical story to modern times with the lyrics, “You who build these altars now to sacrifice these children, you must not do it anymore. The scheme is not a vision if you never have been tempted by a demon or a god.” Nicholas Ray’s 1956 film Bigger Than Life finds James Mason as the builder of altars and schemer. The exact figure Cohen would later admonish.
Mason is schoolteacher Ed Avery. He’s happily married to his wife Lou (Barbara Rush) and they have a son Richie (Christopher Olsen). They host bridge gatherings for other teachers, including gym instructor and close friend Wally Gibbs (Walter Matthau). Everything is 1950s-domestic and happy. That is, until Ed starts having agonizing stomach pains and fainting spells.

Some comments on my review of the Doctor Who Christmas Special 'A Christmas Carol' got me thinking about how it came to be that everyone's favourite Time Lord can never seem to get any 'action', romantically speaking. It's not been for want of attention or admirers; even back in the William Hartnell days, The Doctor was capable of flirting and even having a matrimonial 'near-miss' in the 1964 Who outing 'The Aztecs', so Matt Smith's Doctor is breaking no new ground in running away from connubial bliss with the 1957 version of Marilyn Monroe in 'A Christmas Carol'.

Release Date: Available Now Director: Nicholas Ray Writers: Cyril Hume, Richard Maibaum Cinematographer: Joe MacDonald Starring: James Mason, Barbara Rush Studio/Run Time: Criterion Collection, 95 min. Life-sized and all too prescient It’s little wonder that Nicholas Ray—Hollywood’s most trenchant observer of 1950s American society, who splashed caustic critiques across the silver screen—was almost blacklisted. What could parry the unanswerable questions raised by films like Rebel Without a Cause and Bitter Victory better than silencing the man doing the asking? Bigger Than Life, like those two other films, deals with a barely sustained middle-class family. It stars the eloquent James...

It's no secret that I like bad movies from the eighties. They're one of my favorite things. But lately I keep finding interesting films where I least expect them, and by that I mean really good movies from the fifties. A perfect example of this is Bigger Than Life, a brilliantly directed Nicholas Ray film about addiction, mental illness, and the insanity of the domestic situation of the fifties. A Cinemascope gem, bathed in that perfectly delicious artificial Color by Deluxe, this one delivers in composition and content and fifties madness.

Chicago – “God was wrong!” This line, spoken by the legendary James Mason in the remarkable “Bigger Than Life,” must have sent shockwaves through the audiences that heard it in 1956 and it’s not surprising that the film was shunned, buried, and only recently unearthed as a classic of its era. Directed by Nicholas Ray (“Rebel Without a Cause”), the film is the latest addition to the Criterion Collection and it’s stunningly good.

"Avatar." "Alice in Wonderland." "How To Train Your Dragon." The success of these latest big budget 3-D epics wouldn't have been possible if not for the groundwork laid by previous filmmakers decades earlier, during a time when 3-D filmmaking was considerably less sophisticated than the material currently seen in movie theaters. Many of these movies, some ranging all the way back to the 1950s, aren't quite as involved as the trip from your theater chair to the lush jungles of Pandora, but the efforts are nonetheless quite impressive — or, at the very least, highly nostalgic.
After the jump, we've listed some of the classic 3-D movies that might pale in comparison to today's technological standards, but still thrilled and invigorated audiences in their prime.

Ed Avery, played by James Mason, gets some weird disease that causes him a lot of pain, and that will kill him if he doesn't take a magic pill that is fortunately available to him. But he starts taking it too much, and consequently he starts Bugging Out. His wife, son and close family friend played by Walter Matthau...

This has a soft place in my heart not only because it truly is a lost gem but because it sits in such good company. As troubled a period as the 1950s and 1960s were it’s become so fashionable to point this out that it’s easy to forget the vast number of really quality examinations of the business culture produced during the period. A Face In The Crowd and satires like Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter barely scratch the surface. Fans of the social commentary of Rod Serling who penned such powerful commentary on American business culture and personal ambition as Requiem For A Heavyweight and Patterns should go out of their way to catch What Makes Sammy Run? Sammy Glick starts off his corporate career as a copy boy but rises to the top by manipulation and cut throat tactics. Based on Budd Schulbergs highly controversial 1941 novel What Makes Sammy Run?...
