Forget about all the studio-thrown premiere after-parties at prior Cannes, from Paramount’s Rocketman with Elton John performing at the beach, and Warner Bros’ Elvis which touted a King of Rock Roll drone show. amfAR’s annual gala, this year counting 30 years, blew them all away, capped off early Friday Am by a mind-blowing mini-concert by Cher who got the crowd on its feet after a four-hour auction with such hits as “Believe” and “If I Could Turn Back Time” and covers of Abba’s “Waterloo” and Marc Cohn’s “Walking in Memphis”. Vocally and in regards to sheer stage dynamic, Cher, at 78, is a force to be reckoned with; delivering a truly unforgettable pitch-perfect performance.
Throughout the course of its 30 years, the amfAR gala has raised over a quarter of a billion dollars in which this year’s host Demi Moore exclaimed has “become the most single important night in the fight against HIV.

Which performance received the best reviews at Cannes? Cher managed to conquer this year’s film festival even without appearing on screen.
At 12:30 a.m. in the South of France, decked out in a dazzling sequined purple pantsuit, Cher took the stage at Cannes amfAR, the charity gala devoted to raising money for research for HIV and AIDS. “I thought you guys would be drunk, but obviously you’re not,” Cher said after performing an acoustic rendition of “Walking in Memphis,” the Marc Cohn ballad she covered on her 1995 album “It’s a Man’s World,” that had hundreds of guests cheering her on.
Three songs later — and one costume change into a black sparkling jacket over couture negligee — Cher had emerged victorious. The crowd at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc would have given her the biggest standing ovation of Cannes, except they never sat during her 15-minute set.

Kelly Rowland feels the French security rushed her time on the red carpet at Cannes, leading to a widely circulated confrontation.
The incident happened Tuesday as Rowland walked into the premiere of the French film Marcello Mio. There were words exchanged and Rowland raised her finger to emphasize her point.
“The woman knows what happened, I know what happened,” Rowland told the AP at the amfAR Cannes Gala on Thursday. “I have a boundary and I stand by those boundaries, and that is it. And there were other women that attended that carpet who did not quite look like me, and they didn’t get that scolding, or pushed off, or told to get off. I stood my ground, and she felt like she had to stand hers. But I stood my ground.”

The Cannes Croisette has been busy with receptions, parties, pop ups, dinners and the hustle and bustle of celebrities trying to get to the red carpet. Because fashion and film are entwined in a relationship that’s stronger than ever before, film festivals like Cannes are filled with fashion brand events that extend the style conversation beyond the flamboyant clothes of the red carpet. This year, brands from Saint Laurent, Lanvin and Dior to Michael Kors and Kilian Paris have all been having parties bringing together friends of their respective houses all amid the city’s celebration of film.
On Wednesday night, May 22, fragrance brand Kilian Paris hosted a star-studded party at a restaurant-turned-nightclub, where the brand launched its newest scent Sunkissed Goddess. Kilian Hennessy, the founder of Kilian Paris, greeted guests and posed for photos with them. Attending the party were Kelly Rowland (who had previously had a tense...

Kelly Rowland is going to have a tough time shaking her nasty diva rep after the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Taking cues from The Cosby Show’s iconic spinoff A Different World but updated for some 30 years later, Grown-ish, the Black-ish spawn premiered on Freeform in January 2018 by following Yara Shahidi’s Zoey Johnson, Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Bow’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) firstborn, to college. Similar to its predecessor, Grown-ish tackled many controversial topics, including university investment in the prison system, drug use, pre-nil exploitation of college athletes, sex, the value of college and more, but did so with a fresh voice and perspective.
Zoey’s college world included her competing love interests — woke Black campus activist Aaron (Trevor Jackson) and ultimate hipster Luca (Luka Sabbat) — as well as Latina Republican Ana (Francia Raìsa), Jewish rebel Nomi (Emily Arlook), first-generation Indian American and all-around hustler Vivek (Jordan Buhat), Olympic-bound South Los Angeles track stars Jazz and Sky (sisters Chloe and Halle Bailey, who perform the show’s theme song) and later,...

In a now-viral video from Cannes, Kelly Rowland was filmed having what appeared to be a tense exchange with an usher at the premiere of Marcello Mio on Tuesday evening.
In the clip that circulated on social media, the singer navigated the red carpet, posing for photos and waving to onlooking fans. An usher directed her to ascend the steps of the Palais des Festivals, curtailing her time in front of the cameras. As she made her way up the staircase, a group of ushers signaled for her to walk on the right side. One usher, a woman in a black suit, appeared to rush the Destiny’s Child alum, touching her arm. The usher then accidentally stepped on the singer’s gown.
Rowland then appeared to tell the usher to not worry, smiling. However, the usher persistently kept touching the singer’s arm and said something that appeared to upset the artist.

Kelly Rowland appeared to admonish an usher on the Cannes red carpet on Tuesday evening after being rushed up the stairs by staff at the festival.
Rowland was at the premiere of “Marcello Mio,” which is in competition at the festival, where she made her way up the red carpet, stopping for the phalanx of photographers who were snapping her picture.
A video shows one usher twice beckoning towards Rowland, apparently indicating for her to start walking up the stairs at the Palais des Festivals. As the Destiny’s Child star ascends the stairs, a trio of other ushers, all clad in black, materialize around her, forming a barrier on one side that forces her to the right of the staircase. At one point, as Rowland turns to wave at somebody in the crowd behind her, two more ushers appear behind the singer with their hands out to block her...

Saturday Night Live mocked Donald Trump’s most recent venture — promoting the “God Bless the USA Bible” — on its most recent episode.
The product, which is “inspired by” country musician Lee Greenwood’s song “God Bless the USA,” is being sold for $59.99. It includes the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence, the Pledge of Allegiance and the handwritten chorus to “God Bless the USA.”
In Saturday’s cold open, Trump (played by James Austin Johnson) noted that it’s Easter — “the time of year when I compare myself to Jesus Christ. That’s just the thing I do now and people seem to be Ok with it. I’m gonna keep doing it. And if you think that this is a bad look, imagine how weird it would be if I started selling Bibles. Well, I’m selling Bibles.”

Kelly Rowland opened up about that viral “text message” that she certainly didn’t send to Nelly in their “Dilemma” music video.
In the 2002 music video, Kelly appears to believe that she sent her collaborator a message. However, she typed it out in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet instead of in an actual text thread. That pretty solidly guaranteed that he never received the message.
The silly error has gone viral multiple times over the years, and she addressed the jokes about it in a new interview.

“Do you know how much flack I get from that,” Kelly joked on Mystical Kitchen’s Last Meal. “I’m so used to it now.”
When asked if anyone noticed that the message was getting written in Excel at the time, the hitmaker said, “No, and I’m actually mad at them that they didn’t because they made me look nuts.

Tyler Perry has wrapped production on the third movie in his four-picture deal with Amazon MGM Studios, a drama led by “P-Valley” and “Mea Culpa” star Shannon Thornton and “Run The World’s” Tosin Morohunfola.
Perry wrote, directed and produced the film, which recently wrapped filming on location in Colorado and at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta under the working title “Joy Ridge.”
“Amidst the picturesque landscapes of Colorado, Joy (Thornton) finds herself on a holiday trip with a man she envisions as ‘the one,” the film’s official logline reads. “However, her journey takes an enchanting turn as she stumbles upon someone who might just redefine her notions about the life she once knew back home.”
Tyler Perry Studios executives Angi Bones and Will Areu produced the film alongside Perry, who has now announced three of the movies in the four-picture deal he inked with Amazon in November 2022. Last June,...

Kelly Rowland’s new movie with Tyler Perry received criticism following her recent drama on the Today show.
Earlier this month, Rowland appeared in what some called an awkward interview by Savannah Guthrie. She was then rumored to have stormed off the show due to her dressing room situation.
While on Today, Rowland promoted her Netflix movie Mea Culpa, which Tyler Perry Studios produced.
She and Perry are also producers on the film alongside Will Areu and Angi Bones.
The movie officially arrived on the streaming platform last Friday and has received poor feedback.
That included a low overall aggregate score from critics and viewers on the popular Rotten Tomatoes website.
In addition, some viewers have expressed their strong opinions about the film to Rowland on her social media.

A new Tyler Perry legal thriller, "Mea Culpa," has quickly climbed up the Netflix global Top 10 charts despite being poorly received by critics. There's an absurdist streak in the story where almost nothing makes much sense, leaning hard into exaggerated and predictable plot progressions that feel unrealistic from start to finish. Perhaps this willful absurdity contributes to the guilty pleasure of it all, shooting "Mea Culpa" to the top of the streaming charts, where it's sitting at number one as of this writing.
Part sleazy erotic thriller, part relationship drama, "Mea Culpa" centers on criminal defense attorney Mea Harper (Kelly Rowland), who needs to take on a case involving artist Zyair Malloy (Trevante Rhodes) and his deceased girlfriend Hydie (María Gabriela González). Although there are reasons to believe that Zyair is guilty of murdering Hydie, Mea's increasing attraction to her client further complicates matters, despite her dedication to uncovering the truth.

Through Sunday, “Mean Girls” was the highest-grossing domestic film two months into 2024.
Its total is $15 million less than, though still quite close to, the longer-running “Anyone but You” (Sony), similarly with significant female appeal. Kelly Rowland and Trevante Rhodes do some heavy lifting in an often hilariously messy attempt to recall classics like Jagged Edge and Basic Instinct
There are small pockets of low-rent fun to be had in Tyler Perry’s lurid erotic thriller Mea Culpa, some intentional, most less so. It’s a film that, yes, is about a woman called Mea who is also, yes, at fault, as women often are in the writer-director’s films. The mogul has gained a reputation for punishing his female characters, especially when they dare to stop believing in their husband, no matter how awful his behaviour might be, like in his atrocious 2018 thriller Acrimony, where he had the gall to waste, and chastise, Taraji P Henson.

Mea Culpa is a great title because the story revolves around Mea Harper, a defense attorney whose life changes after she decides to represent the artist Zyair Malloy. Director Tyler Perry is no stranger to this kind of filmmaking. He wears the writer’s hat on this one as he cooks up another one of those steamy thriller plots that culminate in a violent finale. Perry, who is an actor too, is not known for his nuanced writing. His films have been criticized for not looking cinematic enough and being on the wavelength of a soap opera rather than a movie. Mea Culpa is clearly suffering from the fact that it cannot surpass movies like Basic Instinct, or 9½ Weeks, which is what it felt like it was riffing off of, and when that happens, one starts to wonder if it had anything new to say or if it was...

Loosely translated, “Mea culpa” is Latin for “it’s my fault.” It’s something of a cheeky title for Tyler Perry’s Netflix Erotic Thriller Mea Culpa, considering that lead character Mea (Kelly Rowland) can hardly be blamed for the events that transpire.
Like most Erotic Thrillers, Mea Culpa traffics in temptation, desire, and secrets. The two hour film opens with a deluge of expository back story, immediately throwing the audience into the sordid family life of Mea Harper, a wealthy and successful criminal defense lawyer based out of Chicago.
The first few scenes confirm that Mea is having marital difficulties with her husband Kal Hawthorne (Sean Sagar). He’s been unemployed for eight months after being fired for his drug addiction, and they’re in couples counselling because Mea suspects he cheated with his friend Jenna (Arianna Barron).
Mea is also extremely jealous of Kal’s relationship with his mother,...

Kelly Rowland isn’t ready to spill the beans about what happened behind the scenes of the Today show earlier this month.

In a new interview promoting Mea Culpa on WGN News in Chicago, anchor Dean Richards noted the countless articles on the internet, with various takes on what went down.
The former Destiny’s Child star shut him down when asked to clear up what happened.

“Mea Culpa” is a movie writen and directed by Tyler Perry. It stars Kelly Rowland and Trevante Rhodes.
Tyler Perry is a talented actor, writer, and director. He showcases his skills in two of these roles (directing and writing) to bring us this classic thriller that relies heavily on its script and performances, offering a perfect Hitchcock-style intrigue.
It’s a well-rounded film, one of many we have seen, with good acting, solid dialogue, and impeccable direction that stays true to the genre’s guidelines.
Is it surprising? Not at all.

‘Mea Culpa’ Review: Tyler Perry’s 1980s-Style Erotic Thriller Serves Up Guilty Pleasures to His Fans
Within his deal at Netflix, Tyler Perry has found room to flex his narrative muscles, mixing his familiar brand of comedy and melodrama with other genres. “A Jazzman’s Blues” applied Perry’s usual formula to a 1930s period setting. Before that, his first film for the streamer, “A Fall from Grace,” found him trying his hand at a legal thriller. Now, with “Mea Culpa,” the prolific writer-director pushes that genre further, making a loopy 1980s-style erotic thriller with a distinctly Tyler Perry flair. The plot skews close to “Jagged Edge” with a lawyer falling for her client, a man accused of murdering his partner, while referencing another famous ’80s staple, “Fatal Attraction,” via a love nest accessed only by freight elevator.
The lawyer in this scenario is Mea Harper (Kelly Rowland), and her possibly guilty client is artist Zyair Malloy (Trevante Rhodes), who’s accused of murdering his girlfriend.

In a gesture of goodwill, Today Show host Hoda Kotb expressed her affection for singer Kelly Rowland in an attempt to mend any rift that may have arisen between them. Last week, Rowland withdrew from her guest-hosting duties on Today with Hoda & Jenna amid reports of an alleged behind-the-scenes disagreement over her dressing room.
In a joint appearance with co-host Jenna Bush Hager, Kotb took a moment to publicly acknowledge her fondness for Rowland. “I just want to say this – I have great love and admiration for Kelly Rowland,” she said. “I adore her, and I want her to come back on our show, and I want her to host again.”
Hager swiftly chimed in with the affirmation that they loved her and Rowland was “always welcome.”
