Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator” was the big winner at the 22nd Visual Effects Society Awards (held February 21 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). The AI-themed, sci-fi actioner earned five awards, including the top photoreal feature VFX prize. The other awards were for modeling (Nomad), created environment (Floating Village), effects simulations, and compositing & lighting (Bar).
“The Creator” utilized an innovative streamlining process in post, in which Ilm designed and placed the naturalistic VFX over the actors playing AI simulants and the photographic plates as set extensions. This made the $80 million indie look like a $200 million blockbuster, with director Edwards shooting the entire film guerilla-style in 80 locations throughout Southeast Asia as the primary camera operator with a small crew and natural light.
Meanwhile, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” the animated feature Oscar favorite (snubbed by the Academy’s VFX branch), took home four awards, including the top animated VFX prize. Sony Pictures Imageworks innovated...

Going into filming the action fantasia that is "John Wick: Chapter 4", franchise director Chad Stahelski had some big challenges to overcome. How the hell do you shoot a fight scene at the Arc de Triomphe at the height of rush hour? How do you shoot a video-game-inspired top-down sequence that requires John Wick to unleash a firestorm of incendiary "dragon's breath" ammo and looks like it was shot in one long take? And perhaps most challenging of all, how do you top three previous films which elevated action to an art form, influencing a whole era of similar films as a result?
Stahelski was used to tackling such issues. Back when "John Wick" was yet to make its 2014 debut, he and co-director David Leitch were basically making what was supposed to be a meager B-movie style project with a star whose then most recent movie — "47 Ronin" — was a bonafide box office bomb.

Universal is transporting next year’s DreamWorks Pictures’ sci-fi movie Distant from March 11 to September 16.
Distant leaves behind Disney/Pixar’s Turning Red on its old date and now will face off against Lionsgate’s family movie White Bird: A Wonder Story and Sony’s untitled George Foreman biopic on its new date.
The pic directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck follows asteroid miner Andy (Anthony Ramos), who, after crash-landing on an alien planet, must make his way across the harsh terrain, running out of oxygen and hunted by strange creatures, to the only other survivor. His AI survival suit (voiced by Zachary Quinto of the Star Trek films) isn’t helping either. Andy discovers a fellow crewmember, Naomi (Naomi Scott), however, she too is trapped inside her escape pod and he might not have enough oxygen to make it to her.
Spenser Cohen (Extinction) wrote the screenplay. Distant is produced by Brian Kavanaugh-Jones,...

With the release of Shane Black’s The Predator so close that you can practically hear the faint clicking of the eponymous beast in the distance, 20th Century Fox has shifted the marketing blitz into high gear, and we’ve got the newest TV spot to prove it.

“What the hell are you?”
It’s a familiar question thrown around in the universe of The Predator. From the first time Big Bad Dutch (Arnold Schwarzenegger) glimpsed the de-cloaked and de-masked alien hunter, it’s endured as a horror and sci-fi icon. Regardless of starring in some truly questionable films since the 1987 original, any news regarding the ugly motherfucker gets fans excited enough to challenge the most sophisticated thermal imagery, and it’s easy to see why.
Shane Black’s upcoming entry into the franchise, which hopes to revitalize it, sees the return of Predator’s best friend, the Predator Dogs. Known as Hell-Hounds, their last outing was in the Robert Rodriguez-produced Predators, where they were used, perhaps unsurprisingly, to scout ahead and hunt prey. As well as fetch slippers off-screen, of course.

At the beginning of the 2013 Summer film season comes M. Night Shyamalan’s coming-of-age movie, After Earth.
The movie begins more than one thousand years in the future long after people are forced to abandon the only home they had ever known. Upon leaving Earth in 10 arks, calendars were changed from Ad to Ae, reflecting the new life “After Earth.”
Humans relocated to Nova Prime where they faced an invasion from the Skrel and the genetically engineered weapon – The Ursa. These beasties can sense humans’ fear and use that to track and kill their prey.
Just as it seemed nothing could stop the Ursa, Ranger Cypher Raige (Will Smith) inadvertently uncovers their weakness: without fear, humans are invisible to the Ursa. In an unprecedented show of self-control and discipline, Raige eliminated his fear and defeated the Ursa. This act of restraint became known as “Ghosting,” and lifted Raige to new heights of fame.

A crash landing leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his legendary father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. Father and son must learn to work together and trust one another if they want any chance of returning home.
After writing the story for After Earth, Will Smith – also a producer of the film – would turn over the writing reins to Gary Whitta and M. Night Shyamalan. Shyamalan would also direct the movie. Smith called Shyamalan on his birthday, and Shyamalan told Smith how great Jaden Smith was in The Karate Kid. Will Smith said, “Well, we do have a movie idea in the works…” and they took off from there.

Yes, the rueful "Superman Returns" was kind of a washout, with its emo Superman stalking Lois Lane, the weird fidelity to "Superman II" and that annoying kid, but director Zack Snyder and producer Christopher Nolan want to erase all thoughts of that debacle with their franchise reboot, "Man of Steel."
The start of a new era of DC Comics movies begins next summer with this radical new take on the legend of Kal-El as he is hurtled from the ruins of Krypton to an unsuspecting little blue world called Scrigldybum… just kidding, it's Earth. This new Superman promises more action, more fighting and 100 percent more punching than the last movie.

It's exciting to think about what Zack Snyder, Christopher Nolan and David Goyer have created for the latest Superman film Man of Steel. Outside of Nolan's Batman series Warner Bros. has been struggling with how to handle their other DC universe properties. I hope to hell they are going to give us a Superman film fans are going to love.
Special effects house Weta recently screened two scenes from the movie for a bunch of visual effects artists, and one of them by the name of Jonathan Rothbart (Avatar, Priest, Iron Man), posted a description of the scenes on IMDb and he seemed pretty excited about it. He explains that Zack Snyder's visual style is present, but at the same time it's different from anything he's done before, saying that it felt like a real Superman comic and that it was stunning. He also describes Michael Shannon as Zod as looking bone chillingly evil,...

Update: After speaking with the head of Weta’s marketing, we can confirm that the sizzle reel mentioned below was not WETAs. Again, this IMDb posting should be taken at arm’s length, and there’s also the possibility that Rothbart got the effects company wrong, but if these scenes are real, they are not the work of Weta. Original posting follows: There was never much doubt that Man of Steel would have a comic book feel. It was only slightly less guaranteed than it looking like a Zack Snyder movie. The Warners mulligan on Clark Kent is set for theaters in June of 2013, but apparently Weta just showed two scenes as part of a sizzle reel that played at a fancy gathering with smoked salmon and a bunch of visual effects artists. Allegedly, one of those effects wizards, Jonathan Rothbart (Avatar, Priest, Iron Man), posted a description of the scenes on the film’s IMDb message...

With a modest budget of just $US60 million for a VFX-intensive film, the filmmakers of Priest had to be creative. With 750 VFX shots in total, about a dozen companies were employed to help bring the dark vampire tale to life.
Creative Cartel served as the VFX head on the production, while other facilities included Tippett Studio, Spin VFX, Spy Post and Melbourne-based Iloura. The latter.s recent credits include Killer Elite, Don.t Be Afraid of the Dark, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Sanctum and The Pacific.
Iloura.s work on Priest . essentially a .911 stress call. . commenced about 18 months ago. The company employed a team of up to 15 to produce about 60 shots over a two-month period.
The Scott Stewart-directed project, shot on anamorphic film with rare Panasonic C-series lenses, tells the story of a battle-hardened supernatural priest who embarks on a perilous quest to save his niece from an army of vampires.

The recession has been hitting Hollywood hard, even though we may not be able to always notice it. Last week we reported that Imagi Animation had to shut down for a week until additional funding came through. Now today another great special effects house has shut down. Although you may not know The Orphanage by name, you certainly know their work. Co-founded in 1999 by ex-ilm staffers Stu Maschwitz, Jonathan Rothbart and Scott Stewart, the San Francisco based visual effects / CGI house has worked on films like The Spirit, Iron Man, Grindhouse, Live Free or Die Hard, Pirates of the Caribbean, Night at the Museum, Superman Returns, The Host, Sin City and so many more movies. It will be sad to see them go. We first heard about this news via SlashFilm, where they linked to a post on co-founder Stu Maschwitz's blog that announced that they are "suspending operations...

With the recession in full effect, everyday I get emails from friends who have been layed off. It’s tought, but what is even tougher is when companies go out of business. When you think about visual effects, you probably think of Industrial Light and Magic (Ilm) or Digital Domain, but truth is there a bunch of smaller companies that do work on a lot of the films you see in theaters. I have become more familiar with The Orphanage living in San Francisco (where the company is based) over the last few years. The visual effects studio was co-founded ten years ago by former Ilm workers Stu Maschwitz, Jonathan Rothbart and Scott Stewart. Maschwitz might be best known in independent film circles for creating the Magic Bullet software which gives video a film look.
You may not have ever heard of The Orphanage before, but you’ve definitelt seen...

As the Society noms continue to roll in, the latest comes from the Visual Effects Society as they announce their nominees for the 7th Annual Ves Awards, a ceremony recognizing outstanding visual effects in over a dozen categories of film, animation, television, commercials and video games. Of course all I really care about are the film noms, but you can check out the full list of nominees by downloading the Pdf press release right here. Iron Man led the way with five nominations and is competing with The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Hellboy II: The Golden Army and Cloverfield in the Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects Driven Motion Picture category, the category probably deemed the highest profile of the bunch and it went to Transformers last year only to see The Golden Compass pull out a surprise win at the Oscars.

Scott Charles Stewart has signed to direct "Priest," a horror Western that Michael De Luca and Stars Road Entertainment's Josh Donen are producing for Screen Gems. Mitchell Peck will also produce.
An adaptation of a TokyoPop comic book, the story is set in a world ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampire and follows a warrior priest who turns against the church to track down a murderous band of vampires who have kidnapped his niece. Cory Goodman ("The Brood") wrote the screenplay.
The boarding of Stewart blesses "Priest" with new life; the project almost came together a couple of years ago with Gerard Butler and Steven Strait under the direction of Andrew Douglas but fell apart.
Stewart, repped by Endeavor and Anonymous Content, is a former Ilm staffer who, along with Stu Maschwitz and Jonathan Rothbart, co-founded special effects house the Orphanage. "Priest" sees him back under Screen Gems' wings,...
