Thanks to Baz Luhrmann's electrifying 2022 biopic "Elvis," fans new and old (some very old at this point) have enthusiastically delved into the cultural icon's past to get a more nuanced understanding of how this Tennessee-born mama's career took so many unexpected turns before he collapsed in a pharmaceutically-induced heap at the age of 42.
Every chapter of Presley's life is packed with decisions both brilliant and personally/professionally self-destructive. Indeed, his tragic arc might just be the definitive showbiz cautionary tale. His was an incandescent (if highly derivative) talent that attracted opportunists and admirers; he was treated as a product, and, thus, had an awful tendency to treat those who genuinely loved him with the respect and tenderness they deserved.
Speaking of tenderness, Presley's value as an entertainment commodity was, at its early peak, so dizzyingly high that he could work around his newly signed contract with Paramount Pictures...

This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers.
Since its inception in 2017, Star Trek: Discovery has been compared to various aspects of the Star Trek franchise. But, perhaps the show it most closely resembles, at least tonally, is Deep Space Nine, the gritty ‘90s spin-off of The Next Generation. And, with its fifth and final season, it feels like Discovery knows it’s the Deep Space Nine of modern Trek, and has leaned into that feeling more than ever.
The series has also taken on the mantle of being the new DS9 by simply making a ton of references to that series, as well as continuing huge storylines from that series. In the 7th episode of season 5, “Erigah,” Discovery makes a ton of references to the breadth of the Trek canon, with a specific focus on DS9. Here’s all the best easter eggs and shout-outs you might have missed.

Twenty years after remaking The Italian Job as a slice of pleasant (if disposable) studio gloss, F. Gary Gray has gone ahead and remade it again for the age of Netflix streaming content. Which might be a nicer way of saying the streaming service’s new weekend release of Lift is another harmless, unthreatening time-filler intended to be watched with a second screen in your hand or folded laundry in your lap.
Once again revolving around an affable assemblage of movie stars (Kevin Hart subbing in for Mark Wahlberg as the miscast straight man) and character actors who compose a crew of thieves out “to do a job” in Venice, Lift is designed to faintly echo older, better movies you’ve seen before, including from the director’s own back catalog. It’s junk you’re expected to forget while the thing is still buffering.

Plot: A band of expert criminals led by Cyrus Whitaker is recruited to do what they do best — lift $500 million in gold from a passenger plane— but they must do it mid-flight at 40,000 feet!
Review: The entire plot of the Quibi/Roku series Die Hart hinges on Kevin Hart wanting to break out of comedy roles so he can be taken seriously as an action hero. While that plot was played for laughs, it was not the first time Hart tried something different. Both his films The Upside and Fatherhood, as well as the Netflix limited series True Story gave Hart more opportunities to channel his dramatic talents, but Lift is the comedian’s first project that is straight action without the reliance on his being the butt of the joke. Cast in a role commonly saved for Hart’s friends Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg, Lift is a big-budget...

After parodying his attempts to become an action-movie star in the Quibi/Roku short film series Die Hart (later compiled into a Amazon Prime feature), Kevin Hart goes for the gold in the genre and attempts to do the real thing in Lift, an absurdly ridiculous, over the top but still entertaining heist movie that strains credibility at every turn — but who cares because it’s got Hart.

Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we’ll shine a spotlight on key executives and companies outside of the U.S. shaking up the offshore marketplace. This week, we’re talking to Reno Studios, a digital studio launched in Taipei in 2017, initially handling VFX for Taiwanese films, and now also bringing work from international clients including Netflix, EuropaCorp, Saudi-owned Mbc Group and India’s Zee to Taiwan. Despite being known internationally for its semiconductor and computer hardware industries, Taiwan is not the first destination that springs to mind in the Asia Pacific when it comes to VFX and digital production. Australia and New Zealand have traditionally...

Antonio Banderas, Jean Reno, Harris Dickinson and Talk To Me breakout star Sophie Wilde join Nicole Kidman for erotic thriller Babygirl.
We’ve heard stories circulating for some time regarding A24’s Babygirl, having reported on the casting rumours as far back as March of this year.
Nicole Kidman’s name has always been attached to the project, and it seemed for a while like the film might get an exemption from SAG-AFTRA and shoot throughout the actors’ strike.
That didn’t happen, but the project now has an official production date and an intriguing cast that has also been announced, via The Hollywood Reporter, as appearing alongside Nicole Kidman in the production.

Hearthstone‘s Showdown in the Badlands expansion is the final Hearthstone expansion of 2023. Historically, the final Hearthstone expansions in a year tend to be the most powerful. That’s due to both the number of cards available at that point in the rotation and what the designers have learned about the cards that are currently available. Well, Badlands certainly doesn’t appear to be an exception to that rule.
While there will be plenty of time to experiment with Badlands‘ many new and seemingly powerful cards, here are some of the best Hearthstone decks available on day one of the new expansion:

It’s a wish-you-had-gills type of humid September day in Nashville, but Lucinda Williams is comfortably out of the soup, sitting at the kitchen table of Ray Kennedy’s Room & Board Studio telling tales about life on the road to a gang of touring lifers including Tommy Stinson and Jesse Malin. They’re rare, behind-the-curtain anecdotes, many of which she shares in her superb memoir, Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You. But in person, hearing them delivered in Williams’ syrupy Southern drawl, they’re especially captivating.
