Do you remember what you were doing the evening of May 16, 1983? Well, you may have been one of the 47 million people tuned into NBC’s landmark special “Motown 25: Yesterday, Today and Forever.”
It was the star-studded celebration hosted by Emmy nominee Richard Pryor which saw Michael Jackson reuniting with his brothers for a medley of their Jackson 5 hits including “I Want You Back,” “The Love You Save” and “I’ll Be There.”
But it was Jackson’s solo performance of his blockbuster No. 1 hit “Billie Jean” from his breakthrough album “Thriller” which galvanized the audience. It was an electrifying turn where he introduced the fedora, black sequin jacket and glove and his momentous moonwalk routine during the bridge of the song, all of which became his trademarks when performing “Billie Jean.” The New York Times described the routine as “astonishing. He is clearly the heir apparent to the dazzling androgyny...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched “The Masked Singer” Season 6, Episode 5, “Date Night,” which aired October 13 on Fox.
Ruth Pointer was so excited to be on “The Masked Singer,” but a victory wasn’t automatic — and in the end, she had to jump off the stage, as the Pointer Sisters member was unmasked at the end of the fifth episode of Season 6, “Date Night.”
Nicole Scherzinger got it right with Ruth Pointer. Ken Jeong named Tina Turner as his pick. Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg guessed Grace Jones. Robin Thicke said it was Leslie Jones.
Pointer as Cupcake sang “Finesse” by Bruno Mars. Her previous song was “Heatwave,” by Martha Reeves & the Vandellas.
“I am a hopeless romantic! I have often called myself a Black Liz Taylor,” Pointer, as Cupcake, said in her voiceover. “Because if I fall in love with a guy, I’m all in.

A few weeks ago, Paul Stanley texted Gene Simmons a link to a long-forgotten soul song called “The 81” after his obstinate Kiss bandmate questioned its existence.
“He said, ‘There’s no song called that.’ I said, ‘Yeah, there is!’ I sent him the song and he said, ‘It sounds just like Martha and the Vandellas,'” Stanley tells Rolling Stone, going on to relay the history of “The 81,” the band that cut it, Candy and the Kisses, and why Simmons’ comparison to Martha Reeves was an accurate one. “It was about a dance.

Martha Reeves, of Martha and the Vandellas, started her life on the road in 1962, cramming into a bus with Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, and other soon-to-be legends for the very first Motown tour. It was hardly luxurious, with everyone sleeping on each other’s shoulders, and washing their “unmentionables” in venue sinks, letting them dry backstage while they sang. But she loved it all anyway. In the six decades since then, Reeves says, “I’ve had ups and downs, illnesses, but I never had a whole year between gigs.”

Martha Reeves was just about to go to bed on Monday evening when she got the horrible news that her dear friend Mary Wilson had died. The two Motown stars had known each other since the earliest days of their careers more than 60 years ago, and they’d traveled the world countless times in various revue shows, playing timeless Sixties hits like “Baby Love,” “Heat Wave,” and “Stop! In The Name of Love.” In the past few years, Reeves and Wilson toured together as the Legendary Ladies of Motown, and...

President Bill Clinton eulogized Aretha Franklin on Friday in an epic memorial service for the iconic soul singer, saying he was an “Aretha groupie” and playing her classic “Think!” into the microphone via his iPhone.
“She lived with courage — not without fear, but overcoming her fears,” Clinton said during his remarks at Detroit’s packed Greater Grace Temple. “She lived with faith — not without failure, but overcoming her failures. She lived with power — not without weakness, but overcoming her weaknesses. I just love her.”
The service for Franklin, who died August 16 at age 76, is still going on after its 10 AM ET start. The event has drawn attendees worthy of an A-list Grammy party, with Bill and Hillary Clinton joined by the likes of Gladys Knight, Jennifer Hudson, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Ariana Grande, Chaka Kahn, Faith Hill, Angie Stone, Ron Isley, Fantasia and Martha Reeves.

What Billie Holiday is to the blues and Ella Fitzgerald is to jazz, Aretha Franklin reigns over soul as its beloved, uncontested Queen.
While her contemporaries Darlene Love, Mary Wells, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Martha Reeves and Gladys Knight may have had a more sultry style, and while Tina Turner added rock ‘n’ roll rhythms to her R&B wall of sound, Franklin’s created her own robust soul stew. It has body, heart, muscle, it takes on a life of its own when it hits your ears and makes it impossible not to move and groove.
Nearly every kid who grew up in the 1960s probably recalls the first time they heard the Queen of Soul’s voice. For me, it was “Respect.” The sonic explosion of her gospel-trained pipes that blasted out of my tiny transistor radio in 1967 would become her signature anthem. In 1965, Otis Redding’s original...

The Roots ventured beyond their Tonight Show digs to perform "It Ain't Fair" with Bilal on Late Night With Seth Meyers Wednesday. The song appears on the soundtrack to Detroit, Kathryn Bigelow's movie about the city's 1967 riots.
"It Ain't Fair" swings between aching soul and raging fury, with Bilal and Roots Mc Black Thought trading verses until the song's explosive conclusion. Bilal belted potent dirges about persistent inequality over an understated groove, while Black Thought followed with a torrent of righteous, blazing bars over a Motown-esque rave up. Kathryn Bigelow’s third collaboration with screenwriter Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty) is a powerful, angry drama about racism, police brutality and the complicity of silence. Though it focuses on an incident that took place exactly fifty years ago, it feels horrifyingly relevant today and will leave you shaking with rage.
Detroit begins with white police officers raiding a black, after-hours drinking club in July 1967 and violently mistreating its patrons, an incident that quickly flares up into the Detroit Riots and brings the National Guard to the streets of the city. A week later, Elliot’s recovering from his gunshot wound and trying to get answers as to exactly what happened, though as the audience can see he’s lacking in allies — Angela (Portia Doubleday) is keeping things from him, Darlene (Carly Chaikin) is being hunted by the Dark Army (and working with the FBI), and of course Mr. Robot (Christian Slater) has rarely been a true friend…in fact, Elliot doesn’t even talk to Mr. Robot for the entire episode. That doesn’t mean his alter ego doesn’t make himself known,...

Now this is what I call a summer movie. Baby Driver has it all: thrills, laughs, sex, nonstop action, a killer soundtrack, a star-making performance from Ansel Elgort and a director – Edgar Wright – who can knock the wind out of you. When was the last time to got pumped by a car chase? This revved-up ride of a movie is loaded with them, and they're spectacular.
Ok, let's back up and get our bearings. Elgort, the teen dream of The Fault in Our Stars, plays Baby, an Atlanta getaway driver with chronic tinnitus.

This sweltering evening in London town saw the return of one of the brightest stars in the cinematic sky. Director Edgar Wright brought his latest film to the capital and we were there to meet him and the cast on the red carpet of Baby Driver.
The new film from Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz man Edgar Wright stars Lily James, Kevin Spacey, Ansel Elgort, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, Eliza Gonzalez, Cj Jones, Jon Bernthal, Lanny Joon, and Paul Williams which is a ridiculously good cast. They are elevated in the film by Baby’s Driver secret weapon – the soundtrack. You can see the full tracklist below, and will no doubt have enjoyed the kinetically pleasing trailers. Wright’s command of editing and his keen ear for cinematically apposite music is put to full use in the film, and you can read our 5 star review of the film right here.

The Guardians of the Galaxy films are famous for incorporating classic tracks into the films' scenes and narrative -- nothing beats watching Kurt Russell talk his way through 'Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)' by Looking Glass. James Gunn is not the only director who very carefully considers every track, writes to the music he has picked, and seamlessly weaves it into his films. Edgar Wright has been obsessed with his musical choices since his TV show Spaced, with the following soundtracks for Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World's End, and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World all including some pretty deep cuts that make for fine listening, long after you've seen the film.
Baby Driver is Wright's next film, and the latest trailer not only included 'Tequila' by The Champs, but was also titled "Official TeKillYah Trailer" to put further emphasis on the music. The trailer also sports...

Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver couldn’t very well have a limp wristed soundtrack to pound the ears of our fast paced getaway driver so who better to lend a few musical strings than the likes of Queen, Blur, Beck and (obviously) Simon and Garfunkel.

In “Baby Driver,” Ansel Elgort plays a getaway driver who constantly has music playing in order to drown out his tinnitus. And, like “Drive” before it, that music seems to be an integral part of the experience in Edgar Wright’s upcoming film, which premiered at SXSW to strong reviews.
“Baby Driver” doesn’t arrive in theaters until later this month, but the tracklist to its soundtrack (which includes three different songs with the word “baby” in the title) is now available courtesy of NME:...

Going into The Voice’s Top 12 performance night — with Shania Twain trying on for size a fifth chair — Team Alicia’s Chris Blue looked — and, more importantly, sounded — like a lock to win Season 12. (I can’t be the only one still playing his version of Riri’s “Love On the Brain” on a loop, right? If it was vinyl, I’d have worn out three needles on it by now.) Was the retro-soul showman able to bring down the house once again Monday? Or did his star fade just enough for him to be outshone by a less flashy singer?...

To celebrate the release of Willie Dynamite – out Dual Format 6th Feb. 2017 – we are giving away a copy courtesy of Arrow Video!
He’S Tight, Together, And Mean. “The hands-down winner of the all-out best blaxploitation movie of the seventies,” declares author and artist Darius James in That’s Blaxploitation! Willie Dynamite may not be as well-known as John Shaft, Sweet Sweetback or Super Fly’s Youngblood Priest, but he certainly deserves to be.
Who is Willie Dynamite? He’s the flashiest pimp in New York – he drives a personalised purple-and-gold Cadillac and wears some of the most eye-catching outfits ever seen on a cinema screen. He wants to be number one, but with the police, the D.A., fellow pimps and a tough-talking social worker on his tail, can a man as arrogant and amoral as Willie D avoid a downfall?
Willie Dynamite competes with the best of blaxploitation on all levels.

What is it about some movies that no matter how badly scripted, acted, shot or directed they still possess a certain charm? We’ve all at some point, caught ourselves enjoying the visual equivalent of a Big Mac and Fries, gulping down every corny line, transfixed by ever dodgy special effect and blissfully ignoring the gaping plot holes.
Today, we take a look at some so bad they’re good movies that you’ve probably never seen, but definitely should take a look at.
5. Willie Dynamite (1973)

Detroit — She didn't sing a note or write a lick of a lyric, but Smokey Robinson contends that Maxine Powell was as essential to Motown Records' operation as the legendary label's songwriters, producers and musicians.
Powell was in charge of the artists' personal development. And Robinson, a bard of the American romantic songbook and one of the chief architects of "the Motown sound" produced in Detroit from the late 1950s to the early `70s, paid tribute to Powell on Monday night during an invitation-only event at the former Hitsville, U.S.A., studio in Detroit that now serves as the Motown Historical Museum.
"She was such an important, integral part of what we were doing here at Motown," said Robinson, who has upcoming Michigan gigs in the Detroit area and Grand Rapids and is working on an album of duets with various artists due out next year.

Summer's here, and the time is right..
When Martha Reeves joined Motown Records, it wasn't because owner Berry Gordy thought she had the chops to become one of the label's biggest stars. In fact, she was originally hired in as a secretary.
But Reeves pushed for a chance to sing on demos Motown produced in the tiny recording studio built within a home on Detroit's Grand Boulevard. They didn't call themselves the Vandellas yet, but Reeves, Rosalind Ashford, Annette Beard and Gloria Williams (who later dropped out) all began to sing backup for a Motown up-and-comer named Marvin Gaye. Gordy was so impressed, he eventually offered the women a recording deal -- and dubbed them Martha and the Vandellas.
Their early singles caught the ears of American listeners -- tracks like "Come And Get These Memories" and "(Love Is Like a) Heat Wave" burned up the charts. Then, another Motown singer,...

New York -- There are 36 songs in the new Broadway show "Motown: The Musical." Actually, that's just in the first act – 36 songs, not including a reprise of "You're Nobody `til Somebody Loves You." It's like a jukebox went completely haywire.
To be sure, the songs are probably the best America has ever produced: "War," "What's Going On?" "My Girl," "You've Really Got a Hold on Me," "Dancing in the Streets" and "Ain't Too Proud to Beg." But, still, 36? In comparison, "The Book of Mormon" has what now seems like a stingy 16 songs in total.
The 2 1/2-hour show, about Motown Records under founder Berry Gordy, opened Sunday at The Lunt-Fontanne Theatre completely unbalanced: The songs are staggering, the book utterly flimsy.
Both are due to one man: Gordy, who clearly knows what makes an indelible hit song, but also has an inability to write objectively about that skill. As the book writer,...

"I said to her, wouldn't it be cool if someone did a book of all the amazing people who have came out of Detroit," Risher said. "For three months the idea just kept bugging me and I couldn't let it go so I thought I would make a list of all the people I would love to photograph...

We usually don't report on theater stuff, but when the names involved are as heavyweight as they are here, it's a bit hard to ignore, so onward...
Last night it was reported that Rachel McAdams was replacing Zooey Deschanel in Richard Curtis' "About Time," and while it's not quite clear why she bowed out, there won't be a lack of ambitious projects to take on. The actress/singer is set to star in a stage version of "Coal Miner's Daughter," the famed 1980 movie that told the story of country music legend Loretta Lynn and won Sissy Spacek an Oscar for her performance. The project is still in early stages, with a creative team still to get put together, but they are off on the right foot. Deschanel can belt the hell out of a tune, and as she's shown with She & Him, she's got twang to spare, so this seems like a no-brainer.

Monday night's telecast of "Dancing With the Stars" opened with R&B legend Smokey Robinson crooning his Motown hit "Tears of a Clown." Then Martha Reeves came in singing her hit with the Vandellas "Dancing in the Streets." Then came the (current lineup of the) Temptations singing their classic hit "Get Ready." And Motown founder Berry Gordy was in the audience, to boot.
It was the perfect way to intro Motown night — this week's theme — for the popular ABC dance reality competition.
This week's scores included bonus points for a group cha-cha dance marathon.
At the top of the pack this week were Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas. The opera singer once again impressed judges with her moves.

Dancing with the Stars Week 6 Rankings Motown Week: Judges Play Favorites?
Dancing with the Stars Motown night was a bumpy ride for some and a comeback night for others. But was it fair? Not quite. It seemed the judges played their favorites even during the Motown Marathon. They know who they want in the finals, and their favoritism was on full display as they under and overscored the entire evening. One of their worst transgressions was crucifying Roshon Fegan for his rumba, and that probably sealed his fate. Gladys received the lowest score (sad too since she herself is a Motown legend), and Roshon will probably find himself in the dance duel and may even be sent home. Katherine Jenkins sits atop the leaderboard, with Jaleel White and William Levy not far behind.
Things got off to a nice enough start with Smokey Robinson, Martha Reeves and The Temptations performing...
