A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip has joined the creative team for Ali, a new musical theater production based on the life of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali. As revealed by Deadline, he has signed on as music producer, co-lyricist, and cast album producer.
Directed by Clint Dyer with music composed by Teddy Abrams, Ali began its journey as a multimedia project titled The Greatest: Muhammad Ali, which premiered in 2017 with the Louisville Orchestra (of which Abrams is the director). Abrams and other collaborators had the idea to turn the project into a full-on musical designed for Broadway, and since then, momentum has grown, with acclaimed saxophonist Casey Benjamin and music supervisor Sean Mayes coming aboard.
Q-Tip will contribute to the show alongside Dyer (who also wrote the book) and Abrams. “I am very excited to be collaborating with Teddy, Clint, Casey and Sean in telling The Greatest’s story on stage,...

Janet Jackson is infamously press shy. The pop icon rarely speaks about her personal life. But this year, she finally broke her silence: in a documentary on Lifetime.
“For her to want to open up, I’m flabbergasted,” says rapper and Jackson collaborator Q-Tip, one of the many marquee names who appeared on screen in Lifetime’s four-hour event, which debuted this year to celebrate of the 40th anniversary of her first album. Whoopi Goldberg, Missy Elliott, Mariah Carey, Regina Hall, Tyler Perry and Samuel L. Jackson also jumped at the chance to appear in the television venture.
Pretty good for a network that, in recent memory, was known for Christmas pics and made-for TV movies.
Over the past few years, Lifetime has emerged as a formidable player in the documentary space, particularly for sensitive and complex female storytelling. Lifetime prides itself on being a network for women, by women; with that,...

Any posthumous album is, by its nature, haunting — the sound of ghosts on wax forever floating in a state between unfinished project and final-ever recordings. But in the case of Phife Dawg, who died in 2016 at the age of 45 from diabetes complications, that purgatorial sense feels particularly cruel. At the time of his death, the rapper born Malik Taylor had reunited — albeit tenuously — with New York hip-hop icons A Tribe Called Quest. That reunion led to Tribe’s final album, the excellent We Got It From Here … Thank You 4 Your Service,...

The video shows the superstar singer discussing her childhood, some of the challenges she’s faced, and the fallout from child molestation accusations against her late brother Michael Jackson.

Michael was accused of molestation by a 13-year-old boy in 2003, at his Neverland Ranch in Los Olivos, Calif. After a highly publicized trial, the entertainer was acquitted of all charges related to the allegations in June 2005.
In another part of the trailer, Janet asks her mother Katherine Jackson how she feels about discussing Michael. “I can’t,” Mrs. Jackson says before she is shown tearing up.

Tribeca Festival, the first in-person film festival in the U.S. since the pandemic, closed out its 20th edition with a tribute to a small town in the midwest.
Filmmakers Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar, the Oscar winners behind “American Factory,” took the stage at New York’s iconic Radio City Music Hall to introduce their new documentary to a fully vaccinated and mostly mask-less crowd.
“We live in a small town in Ohio,” Bognar told the nearly 6,000 audience members in attendance. “We have a neighbor. His name is Dave. We seem him at the grocery store.”
That Dave, of course, is Dave Chappelle. As Reichert and Bognar tell it, the comedian appeared on their doorstep about a year ago to see if the directors were interested in documenting his experiment to carefully bring back live events during quarantine.

The vaccine-mandatory world premiere of Dave Chappelle: This Time This Place reopened Radio City Music Hall Saturday night for the first time since Covid hit.
“I’m so sorry if you lost someone, or lost something during this pandemic,” Chappelle said, taking the stage when the film ended.
“We did what we could,” he said.
One thing he could was a series of comedy shows in a neighbor’s cornfield that drew his friends and colleagues – from Jon Stewart, Chris Rock, Kevin Hart and Trevor Noah — and fans to the town he calls home, Yellow Springs, Ohio.
The closing night film of the Tribeca Festival was directed by Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar, Chappelle’s neighbors, who won an Oscar for American Factory. “I literally knocked on their door,” Chappelle said.

PopsUp events, which will span New York City’s five boroughs as well as upstate and Western New York, will be accessible to the public and most are free of charge. Confirmed performers include Hugh Jackman, Renée Fleming, Amy Schumer, Alec Baldwin, Chris Rock, Matthew Broderick, Sarah Jessica Parker, Patti Smith, Mandy Patinkin, Q-Tip and Billy Porter. (See below for a more complete list.)

Busta Rhymes has tapped Vybz Kartel for a new song, “The Don and the Boss,” the first offering from the rapper’s next album, Extinction Level Event 2: The Wrath of God.
The track boasts a booming beat with thick bass hits and brisk percussion holding down scattered synth loops and blaring trumpets. It’s an ideal beat for Vybz Kartel and Busta to get as boastful and over-the-top as they can: “Kartel is a mystery/Nancy Drew can’t fix it,” Vybz Kartel spits, while later Busta delivers, “Don...

Before the late-night show and the household fame, the Roots were the pride of Philadelphia’s underground hip-hop scene. The quiet heart of that version of the Roots — an unforgettable part of the lineup that put them on the map, won countless devoted fans, and enabled all the success to come — was Malik B, who died this week at age 47.
Malik wasn’t the flashiest verbal technician in the Roots; that was always Tariq Trotter, a.k.a. Black Thought, a boundless lyrical dynamo whose freestyle abilities were legendary from Day One.

Yesterday was Black Out Tuesday, in which the world of entertainment showed their support for Black Lives Matter by posting black square images to their social media pages. The jury’s out on whether this is a nice statement of solidarity with the protestors or simply a way to get some social media cache for piggybacking on a popular movement, but at least those posting it are on the right side of the argument.
One person who probably can’t be accused of doing this simply to raise his profile is Idris Elba, who has a long history of drawing attention to systemic racism and discrimination. He posted the black square yesterday along with lyrics saying:
“This ain’t a movie/ ain’t calling cut/ we cutting the throat of the old system/so if you ain’t with us/ then you better run. New breed.”

Eminem has been one of music’s hugest stars for more than two decades, yet over the years he’s increasingly taken on the tendencies of the cult artist — the deepening sense of embattled insularity, the hapless angst, the lack of interest in the genre he once transformed. On his eleventh album, all the old enemies are present: the women who do him wrong, the family members who messed him up, the rappers you may or may not remember he has beefs with, the annoying fans, the haters, and, most importantly,...

Danny Brown dissects the past in the new video for “Best Life,” off his latest album uknowhatimsayin¿

Washington, D.C. — Comedian Dave Chappelle was presented with the Kennedy Center’s Mark Twain Prize for
American Humor Sunday night following a barrage of heartfelt tributes praising his courage, his spontaneity and his genius at drawing laughter from sobering racial commentary.
The Twain event, now in its 22nd year, was a non-stop love fest as a parade of admiring entertainers saluted Chappelle before a packed house at the center’s Concert Hall. It began with a tribute from Lorne Michaels about Chappelle’s hosting gig on “Saturday Night Live” immediately following the 2016 presidential election, and ended with comedian Jon Stewart’s reflections about his former Comedy Central colleague and recent traveling companion on the road.
Slotted in between were Sarah Silverman, Common, Bradley Cooper, Morgan Freeman, Tiffany Haddish, John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, rapper Q-Tip and others. It was accompanied by a decidedly mellow band led by music director Adam Blackstone,...

Universal Music Group filed a motion to dismiss a class action lawsuit filed by Soundgarden, Tom Petty’s ex-wife Jane, Hole, Steve Earle and the estate of Tupac Shakur on behalf of artists who are seeking damages related to a 2008 fire that allegedly destroyed over 500,000 recordings.
The class action lawsuit was filed in late June and accuses Universal Music of negligence in not doing enough to prevent the fire, as well as concealing the extent of the destruction from artists while simultaneously pursuing litigation and insurance claims to recoup losses.

Father of the Bride (which is out this Friday) is so zealously detailed and meticulously contoured that you easily sink into its inventions: the whirl of country picking, surf-guitar twang and classical interlude in “Harmony Hall”; the loopy hip-hop of “Sunflower” with its creeping-vocal riff; the Soweto-like bounce and AutoTuned-Beach Boys-style chorale in “Flower Moon.” But this is ear candy loaded with trouble.
