The TV Series: "The Adventures of Sam & Max: Freelance Police"

The Pitch: It all started with "Fish Police." Fans of 1990s cult television may recall "Fish Police" as one of the stranger, failed animated shows of its era. In 1985, comic book artist Steve Moncuse created an unusual sendup of film noir, set underwater and populated entirely by anthropomorphic sea creatures; think "Law & Order: Bikini Bottom." The comic book was enough of an underground hit to eventually warrant a high-profile TV adaptation in 1992, produced by Hanna-Barbera Studios, and starring John Ritter, Tim Curry, Buddy Hackett, Héctor Elizondo, and Ed Asner. The "Cars" universe has taken us all on a journey. With each new installment in the franchise, we learn more about this wacky, wild alternate reality the titular automobiles call home. The creatives involved have no problem further stirring the pot by adding more head-scratching things into their world-building. Sometimes this means pulling in stuff we're familiar with from our reality. And sometimes, it's especially otherworldly.
"Cars on the Road" -- the new animated series that just dropped on Disney+ -- takes Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) and his best friend Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy) across the country to meet up with Mater's Sister. Each episode involves a brand new adventure in a brand new place, which has provided director Steve Purcell and the creative team with plenty of fun when it comes to tackling how to go about each episode.

Pixar’s “Cars” have circled back around.
“Cars on the Road,” a connection of interlocking shorts that just premiered on Disney+ as part of the Disney+ Day festivities, follows Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) and Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) as they embark on a cross-country road trip for Mater’s sister’s wedding. Along the way they check into a haunted house, join the circus and cross paths with bigfoot. The shorts are incredibly charming and fit perfectly within the already-established “Cars” universe.
TheWrap spoke with Steve Purcell, who wrote every episode and directed three of the nine shorts and Brian Fee, who directed three of the shorts (and directed the very underrated “Cars 3”). Purcell and Fee told us about reusing characters from the “Cars” movies, creating stop-motion animation in CGI and how a surf guitar helped soften a ghostly visitation.
Where did the idea for “Cars on the Road” come from?...

In Pixar’s new animated short-form series, “Cars on the Road” (currently streaming on Disney+), creator/director and animator Steve Purcell puts Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) on a cross-country trek full of cinematic nostalgia. The stops include homages to the stop-motion dinosaurs of Ray Harryhausen, the Overlook Hotel from “The Shining,” and retro sci-fi movies.
“We wanted to send them on a road trip [to the wedding of Mater’s sister], and make it so that each place they stop was its own mini-adventure,” Purcell told IndieWire. “And that afforded us a lot of opportunity to create all these different, interesting locations, each with its own sensibility, style of music.”
Producer Marc Sondheimer added that in spite of the series’ short-form nature, it still contains 65 minutes of content. And it’s tied together in episodic form. “The launch of Disney+ afforded us a different form factor to tell these stories in...

Toy Story That Time Forgot was originally aired on ABC December 2, 2014. It's after Christmas, and Bonnie has a play date with her friend Mason. Mason just got a new video game system, and most people should be able to relate with wanting to play your friend's new [insert whatever system excited you most as a child]. Video games are also brought to light as a potential threat to toys, which they may be. As the Battlesaurs, Mason's toys, are quickly forgotten the old gang we have grown up with enters Mason's room.
This short is a great chapter in the Toy Story anthology that welcomes us back with it's heart and sharp humor. Due to time restraints, things move quickly, which is only odd during some moments with Trixie (Kristen Schaal) and Reptillus Maximus (Kevin McKidd). Of course Buzz and Woody (Tom Hanks and Tim Allen) are present, though a bit more absent than we are accustomed to. It...

Just because "Toy Story 4" isn't coming out until the summer of 2017, that doesn't mean that your favorite childhood playthings are going to be absent until then. Just this week ABC will premiere "Toy Story That Time Forgot," a new half-hour Christmas special that features the toys in a brand new adventure. When you think of a Christmas special built around the "Toy Story" characters, you probably think that it's going to be something centered around the holiday and the introduction of new toys that come along with it...
But you'd be wrong.
"Toy Story That Time Forgot" is a distinct, wholly original half-hour film, written and directed by animation and comic book vet Steve Purcell that contributes wonderfully to the mythology while taking it in a wholly new direction. It throws preexisting "Toy Story" characters up against a bunch of new toys called the Battlesaurs, an eighties-style brand of gladiatorial combatants.

Pixar showcased their latest effort at San Diego Comic-Con 2014 with their new addition to the Toy Story franchise. Following in the success of their Halloween short "Toy Story of Terror" this holiday special follows Woody, Buzz, Trixie, and Rex on a post-Christmas playdate with Bonnie to her friend Mason’s house in "Toy Story That Time Forgot." The panel was moderated by film score composer Michael Giacchino who has been tapped to put music to ‘Toy Story That Time Forgot.’ He was joined on stage by producer Galyn Susman, director Steve Purcell, voice actress Kristen Schall, and head of story Derek Thompson to give audiences their first look and deep dive into the lore behind this short. When Bonnie’s friend Mason gets the latest interactive video game system for Christmas, all of his other toys fall to the wayside…including a complete set of Battlesaurs that were also part of his Christmas haul.

Last fall, ABC aired a charming Halloween special starring the Toy Story franchise’s beloved playthings. Its ratings success has paved the way for another half-hour that’ll air on the network later this holiday season—and this one has more dinos than the first.

Here's the official synopsis for the twenty-two minute special: "During a post-Christmas play date, the gang find themselves in uncharted territory when the coolest set of action figures ever turn out to be dangerously delusional. It's all up to Trixie, the triceratops, if the gang hopes to return to Bonnie's room in this "Toy Story That Time Forgot."
That means more Kristen Schaal in the talented voice cast, alongside regulars Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Wallace Shawn, Timothy Dalton, and Don Rickles. Toy Story That Time Forgot is being headed up by Brave co-writer and co-director,...

In recent history we've seen John Lasseter step in and take away directorial reigns from Brad Lewis on Cars 2 and then Brenda Chapman was ousted from the director's chair on Brave and replaced by Mark Andrews with Steve Purcell given a co-director credit. Many would argue these are two of Pixar's worst films and in my opinion Brave is their worst film. Well, it seems there are some issues in the house of Pixar yet again. A couple weeks back Disney held their D23 Expo and featured new concept art and information for their upcoming film The Good Dinosaur, which was to be directed by Bob Petersen who was given a co-director credit alongside Pete Docter on Up. However, Petersen wasn't on hand to present the footage that was shown, instead a newly announced co-director, Peter Sohn, and producer Denise Ream handled those duties. The Good Dinosaur was originally...

4th Update: An eclectic mix of current and former moguls, executives, producers, directors, and of course actors attended the marquee pre-Oscar parties as well as famed artists, museum directors, fashion designers, music icons, and star athletes. Barry Diller’s luncheon for Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter Saturday was smaller than usual. That night, Jeffrey Katzenberg’s ‘Night Before’ Oscar MPTF fundraiser avoided a union picket line. The agency parties dominated Thursday and Friday nights. CAA‘s was bigger than in past years when 200-300 guests crowded Bryan Lourd’s home. This time about 500 gathered at luxe Greystone Mansion for Old Hollywood glamour with men dressed ascots and women given gardenia corsages. WME‘s was held at Ari Emanuel’s home as usual and UTA‘s at Jim Berkus’ house again. ICM Partners‘ was held at the home of agent Hildy Gottlieb. Few of these names need introductions...

I really don't put much stock in the International Animated Film Society's 2013 Annie Awards, which is why I didn't rush to report on their results on Saturday. One year Disney and Pixar boycott the event, feeling there was an unfair advantage paid to larger contributing sponsors, DreamWorks being the primary example. So with such a nasty stench over the event what good does it do to pay it much mind? That said, I'll be brief in mentioning Wreck-It Ralph topped Saturday night's winners with five awards, including Best Animated Picture. The awards have something like a 75% streak when it comes to helping predict the eventual Oscar winner for Best Animated Feature and as the days have gone on, it's looking more and more like Ralph will be this year's winner (see my predictions here). Pixar's Brave, Laika's ParaNorman and DreamWorks' Rise of the Guardians each took home two awards in lesser,...

I love the art of animation, and it's amazing to see how far things have come and advanced over the years. The industry is changing in terms of technology, but what it all really comes down to is telling good stories. There's been a lot of great animated movies this year, and many of them are up for several awards at the 40th Annual Annie Awards.
Some of the movies nomainated include Brave, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, and Wreck-It Ralph. Out of those films my favorite is a toss up between Wreck-It Ralph and ParaNorman, those were two pretty incredible films. I think ParaNorman has the edge though.
Some of the other animated properties nominated are Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1, Disney Tron: Uprising, Justice League: Doom, Robot Chicken ‘DC Comics Special', South Park ‘Raising the Bar’, and several others.

Which of 2012′s animated films drew the most applause? According to the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood, the options include Pixar’s Brave, Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph, and DreamWorks’s Rise of the Guardians. All three — among others — were nominated for animation’s highest honor today when the group named the contenders for its 40th annual Annie Awards. The prizes will be distributed Saturday, Feb. 2 in Los Angeles.

Disney withdrew from the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood back in 2010 and even before then it was hard to put much stock in the Annie Awards. Now it's just sort of a blip on the overall award season radar that manages headlines twice a year, once for their nominees and again for their winners, which this year will be announced on Saturday, February 2, 2013. That said, the org announced their 2013 nominees this morning and their Best Feature Film list was made up of eight nominees (a large list considering the lack of quality animated films I've seen this year) including Brave, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, The Rabbi's Cat and Wreck-It Ralph. It is nice not to see something like The Lorax among that list, but I still think this was a year in which the field could have easily been limited to five nominees.

Two yummy gifts arrived, courtesy no doubt of my Bfca membership. But I always pretend the gifts are bribes (don't judge) since I am Clothed In Immense Powers Of For Your Considerationing. I thought you might enjoy peeks at these.
Lincoln has been going all out. They have an elegant info-heavy free download app for everyone who wants to learn more about the movie and this week a cookbook arrived. The cookbook isn't new -- it existed before the movie -- but why not?
Lincoln isn't really a foodie movie but the recipes are from the Presidential Library -- some of them from Lincoln's own lifetime and family. The subtitle is "a cookbook of epic portions" but really I can't see Honest Abe eating all that much. So lanky.
The very first recipe in for caramel ice cream so I have no choice but to approve.

If ever a studio was primed for complacency, it would be Pixar. For over 25 years now, John Lasseter’s team has been pushing the boundaries of computer graphics animation, going on to win six Oscars for Best Animated Feature and leaving a pack of contemporaries in a distant second place. Yet, for their 13th feature film, Pixar has branched off into new territory, as Brave not only features the studio’s first female protagonist, but also sets the tale in their most realistic environment to date. In a distinct move away from the more cartoonish aspects of animation, the design and detail of Brave makes it easy to forget that everything onscreen is CGI. Disney Animation has released Brave on Blu-ray Collector's Edition. Directed by Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman, and Steve Purcell (II) the film features a great voice cast and tons of special features. The voice cast is comprised of Kelly MacDonald, Julie Walters, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Kevin McKidd, and Craig Ferguson. Disney has one again done a fantastic job with this home video release, packing it with some wonderful bonus material.
Brave is a fantastic film for the entire family. It shows one of the best mother daughter relationships and features some of two strong female characters. I love the way Disney/Pixar movies all have a message, but never beat you over the head with their message.

As I begin this review, I should confess I'm not a big Pixar fan. Although I do recognize the charm the films hold, I don't find them as entertaining as most people do. Much of that has to do with the animation style. The environments look great, but I find the human beings to resemble lifeless marionettes many times. The atmospheres of the movies are too "cute" for me as well. I'm not big on "cute" when it comes to animated movies.
All that being said, Disney and Pixar's Brave is as good as their films come. It has all the right elements of a classic fairy tale with a few twists thrown in to keep things modernized. There's a princess, a witch, and some kooky animals in a faraway land.
The only thing missing is a prince to save the day. Princess Merida (Kelly Macdonald) makes it very clear...

Blu-ray Review
Brave
Directed by: Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman, Steve Purcell (co-director)
Cast: (voices of) Kelly Macdonald, Emma Thompson, Billy Connolly, Julie Walters
Running Time: 1 hr 33 mins
Rating: PG
Due Out: November 13, 2012
Plot: A headstrong princess (Macdonald) with a knack for archery defies her parents by running away instead of marrying one of three potential suitors. She comes upon a witch (Walters) who gives her one spell, but the results are worse than expected when she uses it on her mother (Thompson).
Who’S It For? Fans of both Pixar and Disney princesses are likely to see this no matter what, but expectations should be tempered. While there are flashes of greatness peppered throughout – and the animation is stunning – Brave doesn’t reach the bar Pixar has set for itself.
Movie:
The good news is that Brave is nowhere near as big a blight on Pixar’s record as last year’s Cars 2.

There’s no better proof of Disney’s unparalleled dedication to giving you your money’s worth with their home media than two new releases, Brave and the Pixar Short Films Collection, Volume 2 (though more the former than the latter). Both Blu-rays come out today, and if you’re a Pixar completist, you’ll want to either get them immediately or put them at the top of your holiday wish list. If only for the amount and depth of special features on the Brave combo pack, for example, the Blu-ray is worth owning. (Yes, that’s even if you were cool on the film as a whole.) But more to the point, both of these releases are fascinating to watch in terms of Pixar’s continued evolution as a filmmaking studio.

The Movie Pool dares to watch the Brave 3D Ultimate Collector's Edition Blu-ray set!
This review is based on the 5 disc Ultimate Collector's Edition. It includes a 3D Blu-ray, 2D Blu-ray, a bonus features Blu-ray, DVD, and digital copy.
The Set-up
A young Scottish princess named Merida unleashes a curse, and must summon all her courage to set things right.
Directed by: Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman
The Delivery
A tale unlike previous Pixar offerings, Brave is a sublime mix of adventure and fantasy that surprises and entertains. I wasn't expecting the movie I saw: Brave is a fairy tale with a magical twist, something not really hinted to in the trailers.
Brave introduces us to a sort of anti-Disney Princess, Merida. She's fiesty, self-reliant, and hates the idea of being a princess. She hates the fancy clothes, she doesn't need a Prince Charming, and prefers to leave her hair a tangled mess.

The story of Pixar's Brave will continue with a new spin-off short that they are developing. The new short is called The Legend of Mor'du, and it was directed by Ratatouille storyboard artist Brian Larsen.
A couple of pieces of concept art for the film were revealed to give you a look at the kind of feel that the movie is going for. The art was created by Disney artist Mary Blair.
According to EW, "Mor’du the demon bear became a bigger and bigger part of the story, but ultimately the film explored only a bare-bones version of the legend – enough to tell moviegoers what they needed to know, while still keeping it mysterious and off to the side, to avoid detracting from the scarlet-haired heroine’s own story."
This short will go into more depth and tell the back story of Mor'du. The director of the short had this to say,...

This is the @puremovies review of Brave, written by editor in chief Dan Higgins. Brave is directed by Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman and Steve Purcell and stars Kelly Macdonald , Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters and Robbie Coltrane Surprisingly, this is the first Pixar film in which a woman takes the lead. Wall:e, Up, Finding Nemo, A Bug's Life, Cars, Ratatouille and The Incredibles are all dominated by male leads. We've even had male buddy movies (Toy Story and Monsters Inc.) before a female protagonist. The fact that a young audience will look at this film away from the often prevailing heteronormative, princess-finds-her-prince angle is the thing that sets Brave apart. Although overdue, it marks a clear step-change. Radical, refreshing and so very, very important.

My 1000+ word review of Magic Mike will be up tomorrow but in the meantime, let's clear the cache with a few words, a dozen in point of fact, on movies I didn't review properly.
Beasts of the Southern Wild (Benh Zeitlin)
A six year old girl learns survival lessons from her father in a drowned world. But synopsis won't due its real poetry any justice. See it!
10Wr: Overwhelming sense of loss tempered by vivid originality, guileless acting, flexible allegory. A-
Oscar? I doubted it at an Oscar contender at first (defiantly weird and filled with first timers) but it has tremendous critical approval, and there's nothing else even remotely like it on the filmscape. It's very difficult to shake once you've experienced it. Could factor in across the board or, more likely, fight for a few key nods. Adapted Screenplay might be the safest bet (so far).

The first and last thing to say about Brave, the new Disney-Pixar animation, is that it’s beautiful. For the first few minutes I was happy just to look at the lighting, the colours, and the landscapes. On a technical level it is without fault; one imagines a good proportion of the production time was dedicated to perfecting the wind, the rain, the grass and the heroine’s red, curly hair. Pixar has gone from strength to strength in this regard, and it’s almost too easily taken for granted that their visuals, from the space ballet of Wall-e to the underwater world of Finding Nemo, are incredible. The love and craft that go into these images, though, should not be overlooked, and “Brave” looks as good as any Pixar movie yet made; I do not say that lightly.

It isn't easy to learn what it is to be Brave.
Such it is with Merida (Kelly Macdonald), a young princess living in the Scottish highlands somewhere in the 10th century. Her mother, Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson), has spent a lot of energy training the girl to be a proper princess. From oratory lessons, to etiquette and cleanliness, to being demure "perfection", Elinor has strove to give her daughter what she sees as the necessary skills for the young girl to thrive.
As can be expected, Merida doesn't really want the future planned for her by her mother. The girl loves nothing more than thundering about on her horse and shooting arrows at various targets...

When Pixar’s latest feature, Brave, was announced I was excited. There has been, in my opinion, a general lack of noteworthy female characters developed by Pixar. Overall, I enjoyed many aspects of Brave, but this film is definitely more in-line with the tradition of Disney princesses than I would have liked. Isn’t it high time we see an animated female character who is Not a princess?!? Despite her royal bloodline, I still found myself liking Brave’s Princess Merida.
