- A prolific television actor from 1968, he became most famous for his starring role as private detective Jeff Randall in My Partner the Ghost (1969).
- Was an accomplished jazz musician, playing piano and guitar. In 1956, along with Lionel Bart and Tommy Hicks (who later changed his name to Tommy Steele), he co-founded a musical trio called 'The Cavemen' who performed in Soho pubs and coffee bars.
- His son, Guy Pratt, is a session bass guitarist who also played with Pink Floyd in their later live performances.
- Appeared in Shakespearean roles at London's Mermaid Theatre in 1970.

- In August of 1976, a show was staged at the Aldwych Theatre in London in his memory. The cast included Glenda Jackson, Kenneth Haigh and John Le Mesurier.
- Died of lung cancer in hospital at Midhurst, Sussex.
