That includes cameo appearances, where Englund’s history and experience bring welcome depth to each part, no matter how fleeting.
Some Robert Englund cameos offer a wry wink to horror fans, while others intentionally play on audience expectations based on his more prominent roles.
For #RobertEnglundDay, here are six of the best Robert Englund cameos in horror.
Wes Craven’s New Nightmare

Mikey (1992)
Director Dennis Dimster-Denk’s Mikey had the tagline “Remember, Jason and Freddy were kids once too”, and the movie does its best to make sure the titular creepy kid (played by Brian Bonsall) is just as deadly as any adult slasher. When legendary horror auteur George A. Romero set out to make Day of the Dead — the third chapter in a trilogy that included the wildly popular and groundbreaking Night of the Living Dead (1968) and Dawn of the Dead (1979) — he envisioned it as an epic conclusion to the story that he first began telling back in Pittsburgh in the late 1960s with a crew of friends and co-workers and a budget of just $114,000.
But the movie that Romero ended up making was not the one he started out with — and even though many were perhaps initially disappointed with Day of the Dead, it’s been re-evaluated over the years by fans, critics, and even by the late Romero himself, who wound up calling it his favorite of the original trilogy.
“When it first came out, the audience was like, ‘What the hell is this?’” says Lori Cardille, the Pittsburgh-based actress who...

Film has always been about illusion, or rather about projecting an illusion meant to fool the audience with a hopefully immersive experience. It’s all sleight of hand in the end, and a film’s success depends on the wits of the magician. But what happens when the illusion becomes real and crosses the line? This is a question raised by Effects (1980), a compelling treatise on snuff films, the responsibility of filmmakers, and where the line is drawn.
Made in 1979 by comrades in arms of George Romero, Effects was made for $55,000 but was never officially released except for a couple of one night screenings and festivals. It never even made it onto home video until decades later. Was the film deemed too taboo for the market? Hardly; some films just get lost in a mix of poor distribution and apathy. A pity then, as Effects has a lot to say about low budget,...

All right, you all owe me an apology. There’s been a George A. Romero-directed film featuring faux knights jousting on motorcycles since 1981 and not one of you thought to tell me about it? I’ll make an allowance for the fact that I wasn’t alive until 1984, but beyond that there’s really no excuse. The film in question, Knightriders, is a rare non-horror entry from the man responsible for the modern interpretation of zombies. But it’s also unquestionably a Romero flick.
Set in Western Pennsylvania (naturally) Knightriders features a slew of Romero regulars, including Ed Harris, Ken Foree, Tom Savini, Christine Forrest, a cameo from future Creepshow collaborator Stephen King, and even a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it spot from Captain Rhodes himself, Joseph Pilato.
But Romero’s fingerprints in this film go well beyond setting and casting. Also present is his ability for digging into social dynamics, only...

While the zombie Bub might be the first character you think of when George A. Romero's Day of the Dead comes to mind, Joseph Pilato's performance in the film is an all-timer, making Captain Henry Rhodes just as memorable as his living dead counterpart, and we're sad to share the news that the actor has passed away at the age of 70.
Multiple sources, including Bloody Disgusting (via a Facebook post by Pilato's friend Marty Schiff), have reported the news of Pilato's passing. According to the Facebook post by Schiff, Pilato "passed away quietly in his sleep."
A frequent collaborator with George A. Romero, Pilato appeared in the legendary director's Dawn of the Dead, Knightriders, and Day of the Dead. It was his role as Captain Henry Rhodes in the lattermost film that cemented his place in horror immortality. His performance as the increasingly deranged and violent Captain Rhodes...

One of the single best performances you’ll find in the late George Romero’s oeuvre would have to be Joseph Pilato‘s scenery-chewing portrayal of Captain Rhodes in Day of the Dead, the primary human antagonist of the film and one of Romero’s most memorable characters. As George A Romero sadly passes, we pay tribute to Night Of The Living Dead, and the meaning behind the writer-director's zombies...
In April 1968, director George A Romero threw some reels of film in the trunk of his car and took a long drive from Pittsburgh to New York. The grainy, black-and-white footage stored on those reels was little short of incendiary: then called Night Of The Flesh Eaters, Romero's film would, in time, change horror cinema forever.

Written by James Creelman
USA, 1932
Genre: Survival Horror
The first of many official and unofficial screen versions of Richard Connell’s short story of the same name, The Most Dangerous Game was made in 1932, in the era known as “Pre-Code Hollywood,” a time when filmmakers were able to get away with sexual innuendo, illegal drug use, adultery, abortion, intense violence, homosexuality, and much more. It was during this time that a film like The Most Dangerous Game was allowed to be made and shown to the general public without fear of censorship. The film was put together by producer Willis O’Brien while in pre-production on King Kong, and features several of the same cast and crew members, as well as props and sets from Kong. Are zombies really that memorable? When you think about it, today’s undead munchers are not exactly an interesting crowd since all they do between meals is wander around in a trance. The pre Romero vegetarians are even worse, as they spend most of their time under the thumb of a zombie master, although on the odd occasion they do rebel against their tyrannical leader.
Zombie movies are a dime a dozen these days, and apart from a few moderately successful variations, they haven’t progressed beyond the flesh-eating antics of Night of the Living Dead (1968). But on the odd occasion a couple of zombies stand out from the faceless crowd of walking corpses, and what some these ghouls lack in personality, they make up for in other ways.
So here’s a list of ten memorable zombies that stood out for me, as an avid horror movie fan.

If the El Rey Network has been off your radar since "From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series" ended its first season, you may want to remedy that situation as they're running a "Romero-thon" saluting the Godfather of Zombies during the upcoming 4th of July weekend.
It all begins Saturday, July 5th, at 9:00 pm, and the following films will be shown:
Knightriders (1981) - 9:00 pm, July 5th
A medieval reenactment troupe find it increasingly difficult to keep their family-like group together with pressure from local law enforcement, interest from entertainment agents, and a growing sense of delusional from their leader. Starring Ed Harris, Gary Lahti, Tom Savini, Amy Ingersoll, and Patricia Tallman.
Monkey Shines (1988) - 12:00 midnight, July 6th
A quadriplegic man has a trained monkey help him with his paralysis until the little monkey begins to develop feelings, and rage, against its new master. Starring Jason Beghe, John Pankow,...

When you’re on a role you’re on a role! Once again here is a list of ten actors who achieved cult movie villainy on the strength of one movie. Some of the actors faded into obscurity while others continued their careers without scaling the heights of their defining cinematic performance. Perhaps I should do a one for heroes! Nah! Villains are much more fun!
[Spoilers follow]
Rudolph Klein-Rogge (Metropolis – 1927)
Although dated, Fritz Lang’s utopian masterpiece still has the unique power to fascinate. Not only did the film make a star of Brigitte Helm, it introduced the father of all mad scientists, C A Rotwang, played with eye rolling relish by Lang’s favourite actor Rudolph Klein-Rogge. The Austrian born star specialised in villainous roles so he was a natural for playing the nutty inventor who creates the legendary female robot used to impersonate Helm’s freedom fighter. With his exaggerated mannerisms and facial expressions,...

Every year, we here at Sound On Sight celebrate the month of October with 31 Days of Horror; and every year, I update the list of my favourite horror films ever made. Last year, I released a list that included 150 picks. This year, I’ll be upgrading the list, making minor alterations, changing the rankings, adding new entries, and possibly removing a few titles. I’ve also decided to publish each post backwards this time for one reason: the new additions appear lower on my list, whereas my top 50 haven’t changed much, except for maybe in ranking. I am including documentaries, short films and mini series, only as special mentions – along with a few features that can qualify as horror, but barely do.

Special Mention:
Häxan
Directed by Benjamin Christensen
Denmark / Sweden, 1922
Häxan (a.k.a The Witches or Witchcraft Through The Ages) is a 1922 silent documentary about the history of witchcraft,...

Last night, La-La Land Records and Waxwork Records (representing the world of soundtracks on CD and vinyl, respectively) celebrated George A. Romero's Day of the Dead with a special screening.
Scream Factory provided the print (well, a remastered Blu-ray) and Romero, composer John Harrison, Greg Nicotero, Joe Pilato and Howard Sherman all came out for a post-screening Q&A.
After the jump, check out some video excerpts which finds Romero weighing in on the current zombie wave and how he feels about no longer being alone in the undead entertainment sandbox.
The night was a blast and if you haven't picked up Scream's Blu-ray presentation, do so. Further, vinyl nuts are going to love what Waxwork did. For those who prefer the soundtrack on CD, definitely snag La-La Land's CD. Day of the Dead couldn't look or sound better!

Chicago – Scream Factory refuses to let up, releasing four more stellar Blu-ray editions that will just add to the debt of hardcore horror fans. Not all four of these films are great on their own but they’re all great Blu-ray releases, full of special features and with some truly amazing transfers. Genre junkies, like myself, should own all four, even “Psycho III.” Sorry. Maybe you can take out a loan. It’s not my fault. Don’t shoot the horror messenger.
The first thing one notices about any of the four new Scream Factory releases this month — “Psycho II,” “Psycho III,” “Prince of Darkness,” and “Day of the Dead” — is that they look absolutely fantastic. Scream Factory’s HD transfers are approaching the best on the market, up there with the Criterion Collection. “Day of the Dead,” in particular, is just stunning. I’ve seen the movie several times,...

When George A. Romero's Day of the Dead premiered on Friday, July 19, 1985, it was released in the same fashion that his Dawn of the Dead was distributed seven years earlier, which is to say without an MPAA rating. The poster sported the caveat (or allure, depending on your point of view): “Due to scenes of violence, which may be considered shocking, no one under 17 admitted.” Widely considered as an independent maverick in the film industry, Mr. Romero once again decided not to submit his film to the ratings board knowing full well that they would demand extensive cuts, leaving most of Tom Savini and Greg Nicotero’s best work on the cutting room floor. One of the major problems with releasing a film unrated is that the perception is that it is, in fact, a self-imposed X-rating. An “X” generally means death at the box office,...

Because one 3D remake was not enough, George Romero‘s 1968 horror classic Night of the Living Dead will be resurrected once more, this time by director Zebediah de Soto as Night of the Living Dead: Origins 3D. As you might have briefly registered somewhere in your mind, there was a 3D Night of the Living Dead remake in 2006, as well as a follow-up called Night of the Living Dead 3D: Reanimation. To put it bluntly, they were not great. De Soto has the power of time and quality on his side, though. He has a solid cast, consisting of Bollywood star R. Madhavan, and a slew of B-movie horror favorites, like Tom Sizemore, Tony Todd (who was actually in Tom Savini’s 1990 remake), Danielle Harris, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Bill Mosley, Sarah Habel and Joseph Pilato battling the zombies. And when I say time, I mean that we are now in the hey-day of zombie-themed programming. Romero...

When George A. Romero created Night of the Living Dead, the movie originally carried the title Night of the Flesh Eaters. The title was changed at the last moment and the copyright was lost, immediately putting the film into public domain.
That means that anyone can remake or re-imagine the movie and one of the newer projects is Night of the Living Dead: Origins 3D. The movie has been in development for a number of years now, but it’s alive and well and we have a new casting update:

Next on the remake train is George Romero's zombie classic Night of the Living Dead. But this one is getting very weird.
The supporting cast is pretty standard, a who's who of genre faces: Tony Todd, Danielle Harris, Tom Sizemore, Bill Mosely, Sydney Tamiia Poitier (Grindhouse), Sarah Habel (Hostel III), Joseph Pilato (the original Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead), and Alona Tal (Cult). But the male lead, starring opposite Danielle Harris, is a Bollywood star named R. Madhavan in what appears to be his first American film. Interesting, but not too weird. The director and co-writer is Zebediah De Soto, in his feature film debut. This is also the first script from the two other credited screenwriters, Warren Davis II and David Reuben Schwartz.
But then it gets downright strange. The story is no longer set in a cemetery, but a NYC apartment building, where...

Simon West Productions, Graphic Film Company, 2020 Entertainment and Indus Media and Entertainment are all teaming to create "Night Of The Living Dead: Origins 3D," a (very) loose remake of the George Romero classic.
The story follows a group of survivors who barricade themselves in an abandoned New York apartment building when the zombie plague breaks out.

Bollywood actor R. Madhavan leads a cast that includes Tony Todd, Tom Sizemore, Danielle Harris, Sarah Habel, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Bill Mosley and Joseph Pilato.
Zebediah De Soto will helm from a script he co-wrote with Warren Davis II and David Reuben Schwartz.

For me, the hallowed ground horror movies are John Carpenter‘s Halloween, Jonathan Demme‘s The Silence Of The Lambs, Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, William Friedkin‘s The Exorcist, and especially Night Of The Living Dead. George Romero’s atmospheric original created the template for the contemporary zombie, and I always thought it would be very difficult to follow in the lumbering footsteps of George’s army of flesh eaters with a remake. Well, get ready for what is being called a 3D re-imagining of the classic. Simon West Productions, and the Graphic Film Company, in association with 2020 Entertainment and Indus Media and Entertainment, have set Bollywood actor R. Although we saw a Day of the Dead remake from Steve Miner in 2008, it has been revealed that a new big budget remake of George A. Romero’s 1985 movie is moving forward. According to the La Times, Lati Grobman and Christa Campbell acquired remake rights and are currently talking with screenwriters about the project.
Grobman and Campbell were producers on Texas Chainsaw and are teaming up with Millennium Films once again for Day of the Dead, with a budget between $10 and $20 million expected. While The Walking Dead has been responsible for the recent zombie craze, World War Z‘s box office success is now helping show that zombie movies can draw large crowds. With that being said, Christa Campbell wants fans to know that they are looking to stick to the source material:
“We want to keep it as close to the Romero version as possible to make sure that his fans are happy.

As all lovers of crime, suspense thriller, war, western, horror and science fiction films know, creating a truly great cinematic villain is no easy task. When it happens, it’s virtually impossible to forget that character.
We’ll now take a look at the greatest film villains of the 1980’s.
The criteria for this article is the same as my previous article Cinema’s Greatest Villains: The 1970’s: the villains must be from live-action films-no animated features-and must pose some type of direct or indirect lethal threat. Also, individuals that are the central protagonists/antiheroes...

Nick Lyon, who previously directed the Ving Rhames starring Zombie Apocalypse, returns the the land of the living dead with Rise of the Zombies, another Syfy channel original movie that tells the story of a group of survivors holed up in Alcatraz, well away from the zombie plague. However when their island refuge is overrun by the undead they take the risk of heading back to the mainland to find a scientist who is rumored to have found a cure for the disease.
From the very opening of Rise of the Zombies you know that this film is going to be different. First off there is a solid explanation for the existence of the undead – in this case a virus has...
