Ed Bruce, a singer/songwriter and actor who had his own run of hits on the country charts but was best known for co-writing Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings’ “Mammas, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys,” has died at age 81. He died in Clarksville, Tenn. and the cause of death was given as natural causes.
Bruce was also recognized for playing the second lead to James Garner on NBC’s 1981-82 “Bret Maverick,” a one-season reboot of “Maverick,” as well as writing and singing the show’s theme song.
Of “Mammas,” one of the most iconic country hits of all time, Bruce said in a 2012 interview, “It was a top 15 record for me. And actually when I finished writing it, there was a question of whether I was gonna record it or whether I wanted pitch it to Waylon. There was no doubt in my mind it was a No.

Ed Bruce, the country singer-songwriter behind hits including “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys,” died Friday, January 8th in Clarksville, Tennessee, from natural causes, according to his publicist. He was 81.

The Mountain Goats have dropped another new song, “Get Famous,” from their upcoming album, Getting Into Knives, out October 23rd via Merge.
“Get Famous” is a vintage bit of soulful rock & roll befitting the studio where the Mountain Goats recorded it: the legendary Sam Phillips Recording in Memphis, Tennessee, which Sun Records founder Sam Phillips built when the original Sun Studio was no longer big enough to handle the demand. The track boasts a snappy groove bolstered by rich horns and a bubbling organ, as frontman John Darnielle sings, “Light...

Roots-music trio Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band adds a fourth member in Dom Flemons for a high-octane cover of “Shake Your Money Maker.” The musicians convened at Sun Records Studio in Memphis in late 2019 to re-create the Elmore James blues standard, which they had first performed together as a jam at the Blues Music Awards earlier that year.
It’s a particularly fierce take, with a guitar assist from Stax Records icon Steve Cropper and Scot Sutherland on bass. Their full-throttle version deftly blends elements of roadhouse blues with...

The Mountain Goats have released a new song, “As Many Candles as Possible,” from what will be their second album of 2020, Getting Into Knives, out October 23rd via Merge.
The track opens with a bristling twist of guitars and rumbling drums before settling into a steady groove. A distorted crunch underpins the primarily acoustic proceedings, helping the song build to a pitch-perfect freakout, featuring Al Green’s organist Charles Hodges.

In June 1970, Elvis Presley made the trip east from his Graceland home in Memphis to Nashville, where he holed up in RCA Studio B on Music Row for five days of recording. Presley, who was in the midst of his Las Vegas comeback at the International Hotel, was joined by Music City sessions players like Charlie McCoy and Norbert Putnam — the legendary “Nashville Cats.” The result came to be known among fans as the “marathon sessions.”
Now, a new four-disc compilation assembles the masters from those halcyon days and captures Presley at his energetic best.

Russell Crowe appeared on Thursday's episode of The Late Late Show With James Corden and told the story of the time he and Ed Sheeran took shots out of a Grammy that belonged to the late Johnny Cash. The 56-year-old actor said he purchased the award from a public auction and noted it had been given to Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Sam Phillips, Rick Nelson and Chips Moman in the '80s for the Class of '55, which won Best Spolen Word or non-musical recording. Crowe then explained he's friends with Sheeran and said the 29-year-old singer has visited his farm in Australia a few times. During one visit, Sheeran asked Crowe if he could see Cash's Grammy. So, the Oscar winner went...

Authors and (especially) documentary filmmakers have long been fascinated (much as the general public) with the romances of the stars, namely what happens when the gods and goddesses of Hollywood, the modern Olympus, fall in love. Just a few weeks ago HBO premiered an excellent film on the life of actress Natalie Wood, with much of its running time devoted to her marriage(s) to “matinee idol’ Robert Wagner. Their coupling takes its place with other “tinsel town” teams like Bogie and Bacall, Gable and Lombard, and Taylor and Burton. The same holds true in the music industry, and in this new film’s case, the country music kings and queens with Johnny Cash and June Carter very near the top of the list. Their story has already inspired an Oscar-winning “bio-pic” from 2005 Walk The Line. But often in the rush to tell these tales, the former flames, and even future spouses are ignored.

A fascinating and affecting corrective counterpoint to the Johnny Cash mythos, “My Darling Vivian”
To be sure, director Matt Riddlehoover’s documentary often has the air of an authorized biography, in that it consists almost entirely of talking-heads testimonies by the couple’s four daughters, ranging in age from late 50s to mid-60s: singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash, Kathy Cash Tittle, Cindy Cash, Tara Cash Schwoebel. But neither they nor the movie as a whole seem overly intent on revisionist score-settling with June Carter Cash, Johnny’s second wife, whom the women indicate took far more credit than she was entitled when it came to raising them,...

In 1998, Elvis Presley was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. The long-awaited honor came 12 years after Presley was one of the first members enshrined in the newly formed Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. His connection to country music was evident from the beginning of his career, even if his sole Grand Ole Opry performance on October 2nd, 1954, was allegedly followed by Opry manager Jim Denny’s advice that he return to his day job as a truck driver in Memphis.

Dennis Quaid’s career is bustin’ out all over. The actor-turned-rocker demonstrated his range Saturday night, taking the stage at Los Angeles music club the Mint with his band The Sharks. The group delivered a raucous set that had the audience of more than 200 on its feet as Quaid danced through the crowd, belted like a Delta bluesman and briefly abandoned his acoustic guitar to tackle the keyboard with flying fingers, his denim-clad derriere, his chest and the heels of his cowboy boots. The over-the-the top physical display – a nod to Jerry Lee Lewis, who Quaid portrayed in 1989’s “Great Balls of Fire!” – was an apt metaphor for a guy whose debut album is “Out of the Box.”
Quaid’s unboxed activities include narrating iHeart Media’s new “Bear and a Banjo” podcast, announced Sunday, March 10, at SXSW. “I’m really excited about it, because podcasting is a new medium...

We’ll soon be meeting the leader of The Farm. One Tree Hill alum Chad Michael Murray is joining the CW’s Riverdale in a recurring role.
Murray will play Edgar, the enigmatic leader of the cult-like Farm, who arrives in Riverdale to spread his teachings and heal the ravaged soul of this once wholesome town. Edgar is a charming, handsome guru, but is he hiding a more sinister agenda?
The new character indicates an expansion of the cult storyline that has been in the works. In the Season 3 opener, Betty (Lili Reinhart) seemed to have had enough of her mom Alice (Mädchen Amick) and sister Polly (Tiera Skovbye) obsessing over The Farm, the organization that helped Alice reconcile her husband Hal’s (Lochlyn Munro) murder of four people as the Black Hood. Alice tried, but failed, to get Betty to join The Farm.

“We pray to the God/ of collateral children,” sings Rosanne Cash in her verse of “8 Gods of Harlem,” a standout on her 14th studio album that enlists Kris Kristofferson and Elvis Costello as co-writers, each singing a verse in a narrative constellation involving a young man’s death. The song is ghosted by headlines of failed gun-safety legislation, dubious police shootings and senseless military pursuits, and it’s an object lesson in how to engage a national crisis without histrionics or mincing words.

Former Sun Records star Chad Michael Murray is heading to another music drama series with a heavily recurring role in the upcoming third season of Fox’s Star.
Murray will play Xander McPherson, an opportunistic real estate investor who is involved in a toxic relationship with Cassie Brown (Brandy Norwood). Xander plays white collar but learned his hustle on the street and knows how to use his charm and power to get what he wants.
Co-created by Lee Daniels and Tom Donaghy, Star follows three talented singers – running from their pasts and desperate for a new start – with ambitions of stardom, as they navigate the cutthroat music business.
The large ensemble cast includes Queen Latifah, Benjamin Bratt, Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny, Brittany O’Grady, Amiyah Scott, Quincy Brown, Miss Lawrence, Michael Michele, Stephen Dorff and Luke James.
Daniels and Donaghy executive produce with Pamela Oas Williams. Karin Gist serves as showrunner and executive producer.

Teen drama One Tree Hill ended its nine-season run in 2012, and there hasn't been a show quite like it since.
Many of the actors catapulted into stardom thanks to the series and are now killing it on both the big and small screen. Meanwhile, others have removed themselves from the spotlight completely.
However, nothing bonds a group of strangers quite like a TV show. Their bond has remained strong, and they continue to hang out and keep in touch with fans at conventions which have also kept the legacy of the series alive for new and old fans alike.
There are even talks of a possible revival in the near-future.
So, let's return to Tree Hill and see what your basketball-loving, small-town actors have been up to since the series wrapped.
1. Chad Michael Murray - Lucas Scott Much like his character Lucas Scott, actor Chad Michael Murray became a writer.
