Michael Peyser is a little cooler than we are to Sidney Lumet’s ultra-cinematic adaptation of Ray Rigby’s adaptation of his play set in a brutal British military prison in the Libyan desert. Sean Connery was thrilled to land this serious role after feeling marginalized by his identification with James Bond. He’s terrific in this, as is the entire distinguished cast. Lumet’s 1995 career memoir/handbook Making Movies is one of the best resources for would-be directors.

The list of candidates for the 2020 Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors election is now out, with the winner in each branch being chosen directly from these entries rather than whittling it down to four finalists in each, as has been done previously. The list of candidates is made up of qualified AMPAS members who actually submit themselves.
Also new this year in the streamlined timetable, as Deadline exclusively reported May 16. The winners for the 17 open slots on the 54-member board will be chosen by preferential balloting, just like Best Picture race at the Oscars. Voting begins Monday and ballots are due back June 5.
The actors branch is the largest in the Academy and it also has drawn the biggest field of contenders for the one spot that is up. Incumbent governor Whoopi Goldberg is running for re-election against past governor Ed Begley Jr. vying to return to the board.

A military coup in the U.S.? General Burt Lancaster’s scheme would be flawless if not for true blue Marine Kirk Douglas, who snitches to the White House. Now Burt’s whole expensive clandestine army might go to waste – Sad! John Frankenheimer and Rod Serling are behind this nifty paranoid conspiracy thriller.

Positioned in this American trailer as the French answer to Gone With the Wind, Marcel Carne's two-part,three hour meditation on the 19th century theater world (paradis is the name for the gallery, the second balcony) was voted Best Film Ever in a poll of Gallic critics and celebrities in 1995. Nonetheless it is not widely known today, despite a sterling restored DVD release from Criterion in 2002. Michael Peyser details the astonishing production history of this fact-based classic, which was nearly released as two separate films and was shot with much difficulty during the German occupation of France .

Today on Trailers from Hell, Michael Peyser takes a peek at this politically charged film from 1964, starring Burt Lancaster. President John F. Kennedy was a fan of the best selling novel and provided enthusiastic, if clandestine, support for Rod Serling's scripted movie version, allowing unusual access to shooting outside the White House. General Edwin Walker, who clashed with Kennedy over the Cuban Missile Crisis, was the prototype for Burt Lancaster’s warmongering general character who engineers a military coup against embattled president Fredric March. Director John Frankenheimer's live TV background provides plenty of Playhouse 90 immediacy and the supporting cast is unparalleled.

As "American Hustle" and "The Wolf of Wall Street" come on strong at the end of the year, don't count out "Gravity" in the Oscar race. That's a movie that most people have already seen and liked. At the Warner Bros. holiday fete hosted by Sue Kroll at Lucques last week, packed with Academy members, most of them hadn't yet seen the late entries or such small films as "All is Lost." Frontrunner director Alfonso and his son and co-writer Jonas Cuaron, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki and the woman who gives her heart to the movie, Sandra Bullock, turned on the charm for over two hours with the likes of actor veterans Diane Baker and Jon Voight, writer Wesley Strick, producers Joe Medjuck, David Linde, Albert Berger, Michael Peyser, and Marcia Nasatir and directors Kimberly Peirce and Edgar Wright, who is finally ready to tackle Marvel's Ant Man, "one inch at a time.

Stay off the streets and stay in with a movie…that takes to the streets.
Los Angelenos are aflutter with impending chaos. And, if you don’t live in Los Angeles, you probably don’t understand. (I live here and I’m not sure I fully understand.) But this weekend (July 15-17), the City of Los Angeles has gotten it in its mind to shut down the 405 Freeway, one of the central lifelines for the (frankly absurd) amount of traffic that hits Los Angeles on a daily basis. This means that, functionally, no one’s going anywhere this weekend and the entire West side of Los Angeles is going to be choked off by the cold, unrelenting hands of the Los Angeles Dot.
Naturally, this has become a bit of a cultural meme (surely confusing anyone who doesn’t live in Los Angeles) dubbed by internet pun genii as “Carmageddon.

Mary Lambert: Wow. I haven’t been to the website in a while and I thought I would celebrate the milestone by checking it out. It has really evolved! I’ve spent the whole morning there, entertaining myself. What was I supposed to be doing today?

There is nothing like a good ol’ fashion showdown between cowboys and ninjas.
Completely different types of fighters but definitely warriors in their own right. This classic battle can be briefly viewed in an ambush clip from the upcoming martial arts fantasy western, The Warrior’s Way.
In case you haven’t been following any of the posts for Sngmoo Lee’s debut film, now is your time to start. The film stars Geoffrey Rush, Kate Bosworth, Dong-gun Jang and Tony Cox in, what hopes to be, an epic CG adventure.
Below you will find the ‘Sad Flute’ clip to give you an idea of the tone and style of the movie.along with a synopsis. The clip kind of reminds me of a period piece done 300 style due to the CG rich background.

The latest poster for Sngmoo Lee’s “The Warrior’s Way” looks suspiciously like a previously released poster, but with Kate Bosworth and Geoffrey Rush photoshopped in for, one presumes, domestic consumption since I’m pretty sure no one knows who star Dong-gun Jan is in the States. Lazy? Sure. But Kate looks nice in it. Geoffrey is okay, too, I guess, if you’re into crabby looking old sailor-type dudes. A couple flights later I've left Austin and I'm finally back in the real world and have a chance to sit down and look at my e-mail and lookie here.
