Jason David Frank, who portrayed Tommy Oliver, the original green ranger on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, has died. He was 49.
Justine Hunt, a representative for the actor who was best known for his various roles in the Power Rangers universe, confirmed his death to the Associated Press on Sunday. A cause was not provided. In a statement, Hunt requested that the privacy of Frank’s friends and family be respected “during this horrible time as we come to terms with the loss of such a wonderful human being.”
Frank’s relationship to the long-running franchise spanned nearly three decades, beginning with his debut in the 1993 TV series as the Green Ranger — a transfer student at Angel Grove High School brainwashed by Rita Repulsa to fight the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers before becoming the White Ranger after being freed from her spell. Alvin Deutsch, the attorney who represented singer Peggy Lee in her landmark victory over Walt Disney Productions and more recently tangled with Broadway producer Scott Rudin and the estate of author Harper Lee over rights to a stage production of To Kill A Mockingbird, died Oct. 6 at his home in New York City. He was 89.
The Deutsch family announced his death just yesterday, shortly following his win, in arbitration, against the Lee estate. The Deutsch family says it chose to wait until the Lee verdict was rendered before making his death public.
An internationally renowned expert in copyright law, Deutsch also represented a lengthy roster of entertainment and cultural figures throughout his career, including author Tom Wolfe (a client for 50 years), the Broadway composing team of Charles Strouse and Lee Adams, librettist Michael Stewart, songwriter Irving Burgee (“Day O...

After turning the Gossip Girl books into a TV phenomenon, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are bringing another young adult series to The CW with Sweet Valley, based on the Sweet Valley High books and the television series. “Sweet Valley is the town everyone dreams of growing up in. And there’s no better example of that promise than Elizabeth Wakefield. But when her missing twin sister Jessica miraculously returns, it reignites a lifelong rivalry,” reads Deadline’s series description. “It falls to new girl Enid Ruiz to discover that someone (or something) is pulling all the strings, but can she convince the twins that putting their personal war aside is the only way to drag Sweet Valley’s dark roots into the California sunshine?” First published in 1981 by author Francine Pascal, the series consisted of 181 books over a 20-year run. The books made the leap to the small screen...

Exclusive: Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who turned the Gossip Girl YA books into a hit series for the CW (and now HBO Max), are bringing another popular YA book series to the screen at the broadcast network. The CW is developing Sweet Valley, a TV series based on the Sweet Valley High books by Francine Pascal. The bestselling novels were previously adapted into the 1994 series Sweet Valley High, which aired in syndication before moving to one of the CW’s predecessors, Upn, for its fourth and final season.
The latest project is a co-production between new ViacomCBS corporate siblings CBS Studios and Paramount TV Studios in what is believed to be the first time the Paramount vault has been mined by the CW.

Talk about some stunning sisters! "Sweet Valley High" alums Brittany Daniel and Cynthia Daniel hit the blue carpet for the premiere of "Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser" in Los Angeles on Wednesday. The twins -- who starred on the beloved series together from 1994-1998 -- looked gorgeous as they posed for pics before heading into the star-studded screening. Brittany, who reprises her role Brandy in the David Spade sequel, stunned in her black halter crop top and a matching high-waisted skirt, while Cynthia looked beautiful wearing a similar baby blue ensemble. While we've rarely seen the 39-year-old actresses at public events together since starring on the show in the '90s, it does sound like the blonde beauties are working on a reboot for the series, which was adapted from Francine Pascal's books of the same name. "There is some talk right now," Brittany told reporters at the premiere.

Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield are coming back. At least they hope to. I can exclusively reveal that Brittany and Cynthia Daniel are developing a reboot of Sweet Valley High, their 1990s television series based on Francine Pascal's book franchise of the same name. "There is some talk right now," Brittany told me last night at the premiere of Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser, a sequel to David Spade's 2001 mullet classic, Joe Dirt. "We're actually going to have some conversations with Francine." The twin sisters, now 39, starred as the Wakefield girls on the show, which ran for four seasons between 1994 and 1997. Diablo Cody won the Oscar for her first screenplay, "Juno," and has gone on to write the films "Jennifer's Body" and "Young Adult" as well as the TV show "United States of Tara," so she's hardly a Hollywood outsider at this point. But that doesn't mean she lives in such a bubble that she can't see the industry's flaws and call out the areas where it needs to do better. A vocal advocate for women, the 34-year-old screenwriter is the co-chair of this year's Athena Film Festival, an event organized to showcase female leaders "in both real life and the fictional world." Cody, who also wrote the screenplay for the upcoming (musical!) "Sweet Valley High" movie, spoke to HuffPost Women about her frustration with the Oscar nominations, the famous Wakefield twins and her admiration for Lena Dunham.

We’re a generation obsessed with our own recent past, as befits the children of Boomers. Our influence on the entertainment industry is also increasing as we grow older. That’s probably why 2012 was the year that a collective nostalgia for pop culture from the ’90s and even the early ’00s hit in full force. Kirsten Dunst grew up in the industry, but it still surprised us to discover that her first paid gig was as a toddler modeling for the book cover of one of the most popular teen girl series, in 1986. "Actually, my first cover was a book in the 'Baby-Sitters Club' series, 'Claudia Gets a Phantom Phone Call," she told Parade magazine in 2008. Book Review: The Sweet Life #1 & #2 by Francine Pascal - Sweet Valley Adulthood
It's summer time, which means that you might be in dire need of a good beach read. Well thank God for Francine Pascal and the World of Sweet Valley, because both are back with the latest chapter in the Sweet Valley saga, titled The Sweet Life.
The Sweet Life is the new eSerial from Ms. Pascal that picks up three years later from 2010's Sweet Valley Confidential (review here) and follows the iconic California twins, Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield, further into their adulthood as they juggle marriage, children (!), and of course the latest scandals to hit the titular town of Sweet Valley. While the Sweet Valley we know is still at the heart of The Sweet Life, the series has graduated to full on adult status with hints of bunkbuster laced throughout its digital pages. Is that a bad thing?...

When Diablo Cody promised back in November that her in-the-works new Sweet Valley High movie would be "a feast for the senses", we didn't quite expect this. Speaking to MTV, Cody has teased that we might possibly expect her Francine Pascal-inspired opus to arrive as a musical."There’s original songs being written for it right now," she revealed, "which is the most exciting development. She’s done indie (Juno), horror (Jennifer’s Body, the upcoming Evil Dead remake) and dark comedy (Young Adult). Now could Diablo Cody be doing a movie musical?
While gracing the red carpet at the recent Critics’ Choice Awards, the Oscar-winning writer/director hinted that her film adaptation of Sweet Valley High - a project she dished on back in November – might turn into a musical. Cody informed MTV’s Josh Horowitz that original songs for the movie are being written by “Tony and Pulitzer winning songwriters from Broadway,” namely Next to Normal composers Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkie. (Only the best for the Wakefield twins, am I right?) When pushed to confirm whether or not the residents of Sweet Valley, California will spontaneously break out into song and dance, however, the former stripper-turned-Hollywood darling could only give an uncharacteristaclly coy, “Perhaps it is.” What a tease. Let's suppose, for a second, that you were hooked up to a polygraph at a police station. Suppose they start by asking you fairly straightforward questions: your name, where you live, the hospital where you were born, etc. Then, all of a sudden, they start asking if you've ever read Francine Pascal's classic book series, Sweet Valley High (a la the Seinfeld episode where Jerry takes a polygraph to prove he hasn't seen Melrose Place). And of course you deny it, because who the hell would admit to reading Sweet Valley High, but then they start asking you which Wakefield sister dated Bruce Patman (Jessica), or how Regina Morrow died (cocaine overdose), or the name of the cult that kidnapped Jessica (the Good Friends). If, at this point, you keep saying you don't know, and the polygraph machine is going haywire, you probably want [...]...

[1] The more I've heard about Diablo Cody's Sweet Valley High movie adaptation, the clearer it's become that she's the perfect person to bring Francine Pascal's Ya series to the big screen. Since landing [2] the project back in 2009, Cody's described her approach as a "sharp comedy/satire [3]" that will "[be] to the ’80s what American Graffiti [4] was to the [early] ’60s." It's a smart way to approach the material, which was (in retrospect, now that I'm not 13) pretty silly stuff but which still brings up strong feelings of nostalgia in people who grew up reading the books as kids. And now, Cody's hinted at another, more unexpected angle she could be adding to the film. In a recent interview, Cody revealed that Broadway vets Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey (Next to Normal) have signed on to write tunes for the Sweet Valley High, and teased that the movie could just wind up becoming a musical.

When the first images from Young Adult surfaced on the Web earlier this year, showing Charlize Theron looking bedraggled in her sweats and Mickey Mouse shirt, clutching a Pomeranian in a carrier and a Victoria’s Secret bag, several young adult authors I know took to Twitter immediately. They seemed torn between being excited about the existence of a movie about their profession, especially one written by Diablo Cody and directed by Jason Reitman, and slightly horrified by the idea of being depicted as ladies who can’t be bothered to brush their hair and put on a decent pair of pants before leaving the house. And then when they learned Charlize’s character, Mavis Gary, is kind of a crazy stalker who can’t let go of her high school years, they were a bit worried.

[1] We haven't seen a feature from screenwriter from Diablo Cody since 2009's tepidly received Jennifer's Body, but next month's Young Adult kicks off a series of interesting projects Cody's got on her slate. In a pair of recent interviews, Cody touched upon two very different ones: the Evil Dead remake from writer-director Fede Alvarez (which has the blessing of the original's director Sam Raimi and star/exec producer Bruce Campbell, before you get too up in arms), and that Sweet Valley High movie announced [2] a couple of years back. Read her comments after the jump. Cody was brought on to The Evil Dead over the summer to rewrite Alvarez's original draft, which she praised in a recent conversation with Collider [3] as "really scary" and "unbelievably violent." Though her involvement [4] predictably inspired grumbling from moviegoers only familiar with her work in Juno and Jennifer's Body, Cody reassured horror fans that she'd...

Mindy Kaling may love shopping just as much as Kelly Kapoor, her character on “The Office,” does (just check out Kaling’s clothes-obsessed Twitter feed @mindykaling) but she’s a bit more cerebral than her TV counterpart. The actress, a Dartmouth graduate and writer/producer at “The Office,” cites acclaimed playwrights with the same fondness she displays for the Encyclopedia Brown series. Kaling’s high- and lowbrow appeal is on fine display in her book of essays, “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? Bookish: When you were a little kid, what was your favorite book?
Mindy Kaling: I loved a book called "The Westing Game," which was a murder mystery. It didn’t really condescend to kids, which I liked.

Sure, "Breaking Dawn" earned a gobsmacking $235 million worldwide this weekend, and the first film adaptation of "The Hunger Games" is drawing unsightly levels of anticipation. But if you think those young adult novels are popular, just imagine what kind of excitement a big screen adaptation of this series could bring.
Talking with reporters in support of her upcoming dark comedy, "Young Adult," Oscar-winner Diablo Cody got a chance to talk about one of her next projects: a movie version of the beloved Ya series, "Sweet Valley High."
"I want it to be wonderfully nostalgic," Cody told Indiewire. "I want it to be to the '80s what 'American Graffiti' was to the [early] '60s. I want it to be looking back on a really cool time and enjoying yourself and I want it to be glamorous and colorful and bubblegum and a feast for the senses. That's my plan.

It was way back before the underrated Jennifer's Body that Diablo Cody announced her plans for a newly revivified Sweet Valley High movie. Since then there's been little in the way of information, but out on the Young Adult publicity trail, Cody has confirmed that the new adventures of Francine Pascal's twin heroines are still in the works."That is moving forward," she confirmed to The Playlist. "I can't freely talk about it, but it's closer to reality than ever."Sweet Valley High is, of course, a phenomenally successful series of children's books (pushing two hundred volumes currently) about Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield. Jessica is the cheerleader and Elizabeth is the bookworm; they're both blondes with blue-green eyes and perfect size ten figures, as readers were reminded in every freakin' volume. They go to school and have dramas. In Sweet Valley. At Sweet Valley High. There was a TV...

Diablo Cody has revealed that a movie adaptation of Sweet Valley High is still in the works. The Juno co-writer first signed up to write the screenplay for a movie version of Francine Pascal's series of novels back in 2009. Cody explained that the project was still on, and that she hopes it will have a "nostalgic" value. She told The Playlist: "[The movie] is moving forward. I need to talk to the producers and see how much I can say about it. It's closer to reality than ever but I can't freely talk about it. "I want it to be wonderfully nostalgic," (more)...

We’re still on a contact high after Sweet Valley High creator Francine Pascal visited the EW office yesterday, so here’s a very important Lunchtime Poll (hey, West Coast!) about which secondary character — i.e. anyone not named Wakefield — you most wanted to befriend.
I’m partial to Annie Whitman (as we share the nickname “Easy Annie”), but Kirsten Baldwin won’t shut up about cheerleading co-captain Robin Wilson. Spoiler Alert: She dies! Sweet Valley High has returned to bookstores today with a where-are-they-now sequel, Sweet Valley Confidential. And because of this, I am having a lot of feelings. Like, dear-diary, dot-your-i’s-with-hearts feelings. Here is what happens the minute I hear the words Sweet Valley and conjure images of its endless series of ’80s paperbacks about gorgeous California-blond twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield: In my mind, I am suddenly lounging on the floor of the Oak Forest Public Library in the Young Adult aisle in the back left corner on the second floor, leaning against the several shelves containing the battered Svh selection in its entirety.

In Sweet Valley Confidential (in stores March 29), the long-awaited continuation of the Sweet Valley High series, Jessica and Elizabeth are now 27 years old - and bitterly estranged. The songs from Britney Spears' new album "Femme Fatale" are coming fast and furious. First there was "Hold it Against Me" with accompanying music video, then a snippet of "Inside Out" that she tweeted. Now there is a 25-second clip of "Seal It With a Kiss."
What's up with Britney's use of things we all thought were cool in like 8th grade? Her first single is a ploy on a silly pick-up line, now "Seal It With a Kiss" not only features Swak, but also has the line "cross my heart and hope to die." Who writes these lyrics, Francine Pascal?
But it's another kinda catchy dance tune, we're sure it'll do really well. What do you think of the snippet? The "Femme Fatale" album as a whole is slated for release March 29, but at this rate there won't be anything left to release.

My Thoughts: And now for the downside of October. Thankfully, I’ve got plenty of time to prepare myself for this disaster, but I’m not sure if I’ll ever really get over it. Seriously, we’re talking Single White Female meets Sweet Valley High, how does that sound appealing? And for those of you who may think I’m being hyperbolic, The Roommate is based off a book by Sweet Valley high author Francine Pascal which takes and cleans up Single White Female. I wish I could say that I expected better, but in the same vein as Swimfan, I’ve come to realize that people will do just about anything for money. If we’re being perfectly honest, I’m a little disappointed in the actors more than anything.

I remember when the first Sweet Valley High book came out in 1993. Captivated by the blonde Wakefield twins on the cover, I eagerly snatched a copy up. The aptly titled “Double Love” laid the foundation for the series to come. Despite being outwardly identical, the Wakefield sisters were polar opposites when it came to temperament and personality.
Long suffering Elizabeth was kind and demure, while sister Jessica was haughty, bitchy , and manipulative. Their adventures with boys, friends and school were chronicled in the books. To date, the series boasts over 150 books (ghostwriters helped creator Francine Pascal), and was the basis of a television series that began in 1994 and lasted 4 seasons.

Oscar winner Diablo Cody is still in high demand even after a less-than-stellar opening for Jennifer’s Body last weekend. She signed to write and produce an adaptation of the “Sweet Valley High” books for Universal Pictures.
The studio outbid Fox for the opportunity and is in the process of acquiring the 152-novel series for a potential feature franchise, according to THR. Francine Pascal created the series in 1983 about two identical twin sisters with very different personalities. Jessica, the conniving, boy-crazy teen, and Elizabeth, the sensitive and practical sister. A TV version ran for four seasons starting in 1994.

So, Diablo Cody, queen of all that is trite, is going to be adapting the shallow and frivolous Sweet Valley High teen novels of the early 1980's to a film! Its the perfect mix! Cody's inability to create characters with real human emotion and the pandering and perfect worlds of gorgeous blond twins Elizabeth and Jessica = match made in heaven!
The original series of novels, written by Francine Pascal, follows Elizabeth (the smart one) and Jessica (the fun one) Wakefield through Sweet Valley High School - a place where there are only rich, happy white people. As the series progressed, it went the way of 90210 and Melrose Place and teen high school troubles morphed from 'what to wear to Prom?' to 'kidnapped by a cult', 'stalked by a killer', and 'my best friend has gone insane and died from snorting coke.'
Truly, my faith in Cody has been renewed.

Oscar-winning scribe Diablo Cody will write and produce a movie version of Sweet Valley High.
The Sweet Valley book series, which revolves on identical twins with, like, so different personalities, was created in 1983 by Francine Pascal and continued through a series of spooooky ghostwriters.
A bad TV series based on the books ran for 88 episodes from 1994 to 1997 on Fox and Upn.
Cody, whose latest work on Jennifer’s Body was less than desirable, caught a lot of flak for her annoying writing which is filled with pop-culture references and countless jokes about women’s hygiene products.
Do you think you’re writing will hold up over the next few decades?
“I like when I watch an old movie and they make a reference to something random,” the stripper-turned-Juno scribe told IFC. “Like, when you’re watching Sixteen Candles, and they talk about her dream gift is a pink Trans-Am.

When I was too old cool for Ramona Quimby’s antics, I moved on to the twin hotties from Francine Pascal's Sweet Valley High, Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield. Yes, I did just call two fictional literary characters hot, let’s not make a big deal of this alright? It’s obvious the girls were supposed to be the fairest in all the land because when the books were turned into a TV show, they got Brittany and Cynthia Daniel to play the twins.
