In some ways, Taken became the little franchise that could. Kicking off in 2009, it was marketed and released as a fairly mid-level actioner with few ambitions other than to not lose money. Its Us theatrical release only happened because of the weird pop-culture zeitgeist it captured where people were excited about Oscar Schindler punching Eastern Europeans out of existence. There are some movies that you come away from knowing that you liked it, loved the way it was shot and knew the acting was good, but something just seemed to be missing. These are the ones you have to take the time to step back from and think about what you have just seen, what it was trying to tell you and what you take away from it. This is exactly what I found with A Most Violent Year.
At first I couldn’t pinpoint exactly what it was about the film which focuses on 1981 a year that saw a spike in criminal activity in New York, but the answer lies in...

Remember that Robert De Niro guy, the one that impressed us in movies like Mean Streets, Taxi Driver and Goodfellas? Along with Al Pacino more recently we’ve seen them move more to comedy with somewhat mixed results. It’s fair to say that Pacino has suffered more, with De Niro and up to a point he’s been able to keep that wise guy style image intact, which probably made casting him in The Family easy.

Film: "Malavita"; Cast: Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Tommy Lee Jones, Dianna Agron, John D'Leo, Vincent Pastore, Joseph Perrino, Paul Borghese, Jimmy Palumbo and Kresh Navakovic; Director: Luc Besson; Rating: **1/2
Billed as an action comedy and adapted from Tonino Benacquista's novel, director Luc Besson's film suffers from an identity crisis. Released elsewhere as "The Family", here in India, the film is called "Malavita". And if you were to ask, what's in a name? Well...
Well, the film gets its name after the faithful canine, which the family loses in a bloody fight.
But "Malavita" is not the dog's story. Unless it denotes, that every mobster leads a dog's life!
This is the tale of mobster Giovanni.

Gary Oldman as Jackie Flannery in State Of Grace (Phil Joanou, 1990, USA):
Long considered one of the most talented actors in cinema, it’s very strange that his outstanding acting as the younger brother of Ed Harris’ local crime boss in this underrated film doesn’t get talked about nearly enough when discussing Oldman’s body of work. This is a must-see performance for all Oldman fans. For the record, State Of Grace is a far better Irish mob film than The Departed (Martin Scorsese, 2006, USA), primarily because it contains much better acting across the board. Oldman was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Tomas Alfredson, 2011, UK/France).
Other notable Gary Oldman performances: Prick Up Your Ears (Stephen Frears, 1987, USA), Dracula (Francis Ford Coppola, 1992, USA), True Romance (Tony Scott, 1993, USA), Leon: The Professional (Luc Besson, 1994, France), Air Force One (Wolfgang Petersen, 1997, USA), The Contender (Rod Lurie,...

King's Speech stars join Stephen Fry and Joanna Lumley in urging public to back reform at May poll
Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter have injected some glamour into what had been the preserve of political anoraks by announcing they will support the yes campaign for the alternative vote.
Firth, feted for his role as the stammering George VI in The King's Speech, said: "The referendum is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to change our clapped-out politics for good. I'll be voting yes."
Bonham Carter, a cousin of the Liberal Democrat peer Baroness Bonham-Carter of Yarnbury and a friend of Samantha Cameron, also came out in support of the campaign. She won a Bafta on Sunday night as best supporting actress for her role as Queen Elizabeth alongside Firth in The King's Speech.
Firth recently withdrew his support for the Liberal Democrats, admitting he had been disappointed by their role in the coalition government.

As promised, we're back with Part Two of our recent chat with Dread Central favorite Michael Rooker (click here to check out Part One, which is mostly about "The Walking Dead" and his character Merle). This time Rooker provides us with details on his directorial debut, Pennhurst.
Dread Central: Not to change the subject Too abruptly, as we All love talking about Merle and "The Walking Dead", but I’m curious about your latest project, Pennhurst, and how you came to be sitting in the director’s chair. This is a story which came out earlier this weekend on an independent production called Pennhurst; it is worth repeating. Michael Rooker (Atlantis Down) will direct his first feature while starring with Beverley Mitchell (Saw II) and Haylie Duff ("Fear Island"). The film has been budgeted at 100K, with Primary Pictures anchoring the project. The film is in the early stages, but a concept poster can be seen left along with an official website below (Bloody Disgusting).
The synopsis for Pennhurst:
"For decades, Pennhurst psychiatric hospital has been haunted by turbulent supernatural forces. When a local TV show embarks on a mission to capture this paranormal activity, they discover something completely unexpected. As restless souls from the past torment the crew members, they fear for their lives as one by one they are gruesomely murdered. In a surprising revelation, they discover something more terrifying than ghosts is responsible.
