The Walking Dead, Season 4, Episode 6: “Live Bait”
Directed by Michael Uppendahl
Written by Nichole Beattie
Airs Sundays at 9pm Et on AMC
Anyone who listens to our Walking Dead podcast has heard me comment on how much I would like to see the writers of the Walking Dead take bigger risks. Just last week I mentioned how I’d love to see an entire episode that doesn’t feature Rick and the gang. I also stated how much I’d like to see more flashbacks featured on the show. That said, I also made it very clear, that I wasn’t necessarily happy with the sudden return of The Governor in the final moments of last week’s fifth instalment, “Internment“. The sixth episode of season four titled “Live Bait,” gives me everything I asked for, but there is one problem: it revolves entirely around the one-eyed villain from season three,...

While bigger pics like "Lawless," "On The Road," "Cosmopolis" and "Killing Them Softly" dominated the buzz when the Cannes Film Festival lineup was announced a couple of weeks back, one film that we're eagerly awaiting that's also playing In Competition is "Mud," the third feature film from Jeff Nichols.
After debuting with the excellent "Shotgun Stories" (seriously, track it down) and then delivering last year's unnerving psychological drama "Take Shelter," the director is back with bigger stars but no less ambitious a story. Starring Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Michael Shannon and "The Tree of Life" tyke Tye Sheridan, the film which has been described as a "fairy tale," follows the story of an unlikely friendship between a fugitive (McConaughey) and a 14-year-old boy (Sheridan) who helps him escape off an island in Mississippi, evade the law and bounty hunters, so he can reunite with his sweetheart Juniper (Witherspoon). It's a...

Boston — What happens when a reporter goes on the hunt for young voters in a state with 969,000 of them on Super Tuesday? He finds two — and a guy waiting for a bus — at the state's largest university.
At Boston University, over the course of the lunch hour, only two students came into the polling place at Myles Standish Hall to exercise their civic duty. Ben Nichols and Simon Wentzell cast ballots at a polling place on campus where a quick walk-through revealed everything was going smoothly — but the number of poll workers outnumbered voters by far.
So where is everybody?
Nichols, an independent voter who supports Texas Congressman Ron Paul, said he wasn't surprised. "It's a primary.

Memphis rockers channel The Boss Like Springsteen’s Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., Lucero’s sixth album is named after the band’s home (1372 Overton Park was the address of the Memphis crew’s loft) and it’s comprised of anthemic story songs of lonely nights in the city’s darkest corners. While Ben Nichols’ sandpaper howl has always done his soulful hometown justice, this time Lucero adds a horn section to its dusty country punk for some extra Memphis flavor. But Overton Park best reps its city when it’s not trying so hard. While Lucero could’ve passed on the E Street saxes, Springsteen’s our-gang-versus-the-man...

Back when Lucero played warehouses and released scrappy attic recordings on hand-packaged LPs, the Memphis band felt like an epiphany. Granted, Lucero wasn’t the first group to smash punk zeal into country-rock tradition, but it was the best at the time, and did so on wholly punk-rock terms. Ten years on, the group has released 1372 Overton Park, its major-label debut. Not only is it a sonic leap for Lucero, it’s another epiphany: Having long outgrown the warehouse, leader Ben Nichols and crew have embraced their legendary Memphis forebears by adding a robust horn section (courtesy of Memphis ...

The country is in tough economic times right now, so every week we try to bring you a free download to add to the iTunes library. Last week was newcomer from Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records, Zee Avi, and this week we have another cool name you've probably never heard of.
Ben Nichols, frontman of the Memphis-based outfit Lucero which can best be described as Harley Davidson fueled alternative-country, has a solo release that we think is worth you're bandwith. Nichols has this awesome voice that has defined Lucero's sound since 2001. It is gravely and dark, the audible translation of a man who has spent a lot of time driving on empty back road highways. The band has released six albums and is constantly on stage (150-200 shows a year). They recently signed a four album deal with Universal Media Group with their first major label release coming summer of 2009.
