- Wavy-haired American actor, in second leads for Warner Brothers from 1933. Later appeared in B-pictures at Monogram and RKO, before resuming theatrical work in 1935. Prolific on Broadway from 1928, including the long-running hit plays "Dead End" (1935-1937) and "The Man Who Came to Dinner" (1939-1941). After ten years, returned to the screen in character parts, often as authority figures.
