"I don't know how I can help." Gravitas Ventures has revealed an official trailer for a crime thriller titled Among the Beasts, the latest from actor / filmmaker Matthew Newton. Now set to open both in theaters and on VOD coming up in February. When a gangster's daughter reluctantly teams with a former Marine to find her kidnapped cousin, the combat veteran must overcome his own demons in order to rescue the child. There's not much more to the plot than that, yet another of these junk films being dumped on VOD every week. This indie thriller stars Tory Kittles, Libe Barer, Sarunas J. Jackson, Kate Easton, Jeremy Holm, Mark Mitton, with Jon Bass, and Jim Norton. Unfortunately this looks instantly forgettable and entirely uninteresting, not even worth watching the trailer either. Save yourself the trouble and just skip it. ›››

Michael Rymer’s Queen of the Damned (2002) celebrates its 20th anniversary next week. The film is notable for the breakthrough performance of Aaliyah as the title character Queen Akasha. The rising singer tragically died at age 22 during post-production, with the movie offering only a glimpse of her greater talent. But 20 years on, the movie is most remembered as a famously flawed fright flick follow-up to one of the best vampire movies ever made–a rush job which doomed a promising franchise. It earned its cinematic notoriety because it ignored its natural and unnatural resources.
The late Anne Rice reinvented vampires for a new generation on the page with her extensive series of novels. The immortal bloodsuckers of her Vampire Chronicles book series were provocative, dangerous, and boundary-shattering from the moment Interview with the Vampire was first published in 1976. The film adaptation of the same story was essentially produced due to overwhelming public demand.

Jessica Chastain has built up a well earned reputation as one of the finest actresses of her generation, delivering a series of acclaimed performances that have seen her land two Academy Award nominations in the supporting and lead categories for The Help and Zero Dark Thirty respectively, while she won a Golden Globe for Kathryn Bigelow’s gripping military drama and has secured a further five nods for her work.
Although best known for more dramatic fare, the 43 year-old recently took an unexpected detour into action territory by headlining this year’s Ava. As well as playing the title role, Chastain was also heavily involved in the development of the project as one of the producers, although the revenge thriller was hit by some behind the scenes issues after original director Matthew Newton pled guilty to domestic violence charges.

VOD is for more than low-budget action movies. Janelle Monae, Millie Bobby Brown, and Jessica Chastain rule this week, starring in three distinctive films available only to home audiences. “Enola Holmes” on Netflix, and “Ava” are new to VOD this week, while the premium-price “Antebellum” is riding high in its second weekend at $19.99.
“Ava,” released September 25, currently sits at #1 on both AppleTV and Google Play at a standard new-release price of $6.99. It was a troubled production: Matthew Newton wrote the film (originally titled “Eve”) and developed it with Chastain, who stars as an assassin in a secret organization. However, he stepped down as its director about a month before production began in September 2018 after facing public backlash to his past charges of domestic violence and assault. (Newton pled guilty.)
Tate Taylor, who previously directed Chastain in “The Help” and “Ma,” replaced Newton; after the film wrapped, it was retitled “Ava.

A movie with more potential directions than its globe-trotting-assassin heroine has wigs, “Ava” offers moments that suggest it might have succeeded as an action thriller, a dysfunctional family drama, or a character study. Since it commits fully to none of these, the results are the sort of bland bang-bang-pow that keep Nicolas Cage and Bruce Willis afloat in between movies that critics actually like, or even see.
“Ava” comes with a pedigree — Tate Taylor behind the camera, and leading turns from A-listers like Jessica Chastain, John Malkovich, Colin Farrell, and Geena Davis — but the results are fairly generic; for every scene that draws you in with some smart writing or memorable acting, there are four more that suggest the kind of movie that gets released directly to airlines.
We meet Ava (Chastain) on a job in France, pretending to be a hired driver so she can dispatch a corrupt financier played by Ioan Gruffudd.

Remember the action thriller ‘Eve,” now “Ava”? The film was embroiled in controversy out of the gate before production even started. Filmmaker Matthew Newton dropped out of helming the picture when past domestic violence incidents resurfaced. Determined to get the film made, lead actor and producer on the film, Jessica Chastain—her Freckle Films production company was behind the project—recruited Tate Taylor, director of Chastain’s hit film “The Help” to take over the movie in the summer of 2018.

[Spoiler alert: Do not read on if you haven’t seen “Ma.”]
Octavia Spencer does some crazy, crazy stuff in “Ma,” from locking up teenagers to sewing their mouths shut. The actress was game for a lot, director Tate Taylor tells TheWrap, but was scared of shooting one particular scene in the horror movie.
“She was so game, her favorite guilty pleasure in real life is watching murder TV and forensic shows — she loves it,” Taylor said. “The only thing she wasn’t excited about was that huge explosion in the basement — that was real and it was scary.”
To calm Spencer down, Taylor said, a “really handsome” special effects guy gave her a big hug and told her: “Look me in the eye — we’ve got this.” In fact, the scene was incredibly difficult to shoot because they just had one day to shoot it.

Every year on the first Monday of May, the Met Gala takes place in New York City, and the crème de la crème of the fashion world and Hollywood dress to the nines in whatever that year’s theme may be. This year the theme was camp, and A-listers presented what they believed was camp — and out of all the photos that came out of the event, only a handful actually seemed to understand the concept.
The rest? Trying too hard, bland, or just plain lost. The exact same thing could be said of “Ma,” director Tate Taylor’s latest film, which attempts to be a campy psychological thriller but gets so lost in trying to construct a message that all the exaggerated thrills die before even lifting off.

Jessica Chastain is in full-on assassin mode in the first look at the upcoming action-thriller “Eve.” The movie stars the Oscar nominee as a black ops assassin who is forced to fight for her own survival after a job goes dangerously wrong. The impressive supporting cast includes Colin Farrell, Common, John Malkovich, and Geena Davis.
“Eve” made headlines before production started due to the involvement of original director Matthew Newton. Chastain was criticized on social media for signing on to work with the filmmaker, who has a history of multiple arrests due to alleged violence against women. Newton was charged in 2007 with stalking and causing bodily harm to his then-girlfriend, and he reportedly punched another girlfriend in August 2010 in the lobby of a Rome hotel room, causing her to suffer a concussion and a sprained jaw.
Newton left the project in August, with Chastain’s “The Help” director Tate Taylor replacing him behind the camera.

The filmmaker was charged in 2007 with stalking and causing bodily harm to his then-girlfriend, reportedly punching her in the head and attempting to gouge her eyes. Newton pleaded guilty to a lesser charge, common assault, but it was overturned after his psychiatrist sent a letter detailing his battle with mental illness. The director reportedly punched another girlfriend in August 2010 in the lobby of a Rome hotel room, causing her to suffer a concussion and a sprained jaw.

Matthew Newton has exited as director of the Jessica Chastain-starring Eve, a character-driven action movie that the Aussie also wrote. Chastain announced they film August 1 which she is producing via her Freckle Films along with Voltage Pictures.
The news of Newtwon’s hire caused a backlash against the project and Chastain, a strong voice in the current #MeToo movement and the Time’s Up campaign. Newton had pleaded guilty in his home country to assaulting his girlfriend in 2007.
Since Eve was announced, fans have been calling for Chastain to drop Newton, who most recently directed Who We Are Now, starring Julianne Nicholson, Emma Roberts and Zachary Quinto, which premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival.
Newton released a statement today about leaving the project, which Deadline hears was his decision:
“Yesterday I notified Jessica Chastain and the other producers on the film Eve that I will be stepping down as director.

Newton, who suffers from bipolar disorder, made the announcement on Friday morning.
“Yesterday I notified Jessica Chastain and the other producers on the film ‘Eve’ that I will be stepping down as director,” he said in a statement. “Since the announcement of this film, the responses, which are powerful and important, have not fallen on deaf ears. “Over the past eight years, I have been working extensively with healthcare professionals to help me overcome my addiction and mental health illness,” he added.

Petitioners are calling on actress Jessica Chastain to drop Matthew Newton, who has a history of physical assault accusations, as the director of her upcoming movie “Eve.”
The Care2 petition, titled “#TimesUp Activist Jessica Chastain Hires Domestic Abuser to Direct New Film,” has garnered more than 6,100 signatures as of this writing. The petition points to Chastain’s record as one of Hollywood’s most vocal advocates of gender equity, and then asks, “Despite all of this, Jessica Chastain wants to give Matthew Newton a pass? We don’t think so. #TimesUp for rich and powerful men being absolved of horrific abuse against women.”
Last week, Chastain was announced as the star of “Eve,” with Newton directing based on a script he wrote. Chastain is also producing. Newton’s other recent credits include “From Nowhere” and “The Sideways Light.”

Director has a history of alleged assault and domestic violence in Australia
The Us actor Jessica Chastain, a vocal supporter of the Time’s Up movement and women in film, has come under fire for hypocrisy after the Australian Matthew Newton was selected to direct and write a new film, Eve, which Chastain is co-producing.
Newton has a history of alleged assault and domestic violence in his home country, dating back to 2007 when he pleaded guilty to physically assaulting his then girlfriend, the actor Brooke Satchwell, who is best known for her role in Neighbours.

Jessica Chastain is one of Hollywood’s most vocal advocates of gender equity. So many on Twitter reacted with alarm at the fact that Matthew Newton, named as the director of her upcoming movie “Eve,” has a history of physical assault accusations, including against two ex-girlfriends.
Newton has said his history of mental illness, drugs and drinking are responsible for the charges, and he has repeatedly sought help. He pleaded guilty in 2007 to one count of common assault on his ex, Brooke Satchwell, but the conviction was later overturned after his psychiatrist said he suffered from depression and was unlikely to reoffend. But he faced more assault accusations later, involving then-girlfriend Rachael Taylor.
Given the reversal of the conviction on the common assault charge, it does not appear that he has ever been convicted. He has not had any apparent trouble with the law since 2012, the year he says he became sober.

In 2018, the first year to begin with an understanding of #Metoo and Time’s Up, any filmmakers accepted into the lineup of a prestigious film festival must know that honor also will spur widespread consideration of their personal and professional pasts. This is the scenario that now confronts Australian writer-director Matthew Newton, who is scheduled to screen “Who We Are Now” at SXSW next month in its U.S. premiere, and who has a history of multiple arrests and charges for stalking, battery, assault, and domestic assault.

The Toronto International Film Festival may be known more as a platform for fall season movies than a market, but there are plenty of strong films in each year’s lineup looking for U.S. distribution. While films ranging from the Margot Robbie vehicle “I, Tonya” to Louis C.K.’s “I Love You, Daddy” landed sturdy deals during Tiff, many other highlights remain homeless. Here’s a look at a few of them, presented in the hopes that distributors will take note.

If there were any justice in this sick, sad world, history would remember 2017 as the year that people woke the hell up and stopped taking Julianne Nicholson for granted. There isn’t, and it won’t, but that shouldn’t stop us from giving America’s most under-appreciated screen actress the credit she’s been owed since the last century. Raw and intractably real in a number of small indies that you’ve probably never seen (“Tully,” “Flannel Pajamas”), just as good in a handful of larger films that you probably have (“Kinsey,” “August: Osage County”), and even better in three new movies that you’ll be able to see in the next few months (including “I, Tonya” and “Novitiate”), the elfin Massachusetts native may spend the brunt of her time working “Law & Order” gigs on TV, but she has an authenticity that bigger stars can’t buy and a...

Working with Julianne Nicholson last year on indie drama From Nowhere, Australian writer-director Matthew Newton seems to have found a kind of muse in the actress, casting her as the lead in his Toronto Film Festival-premiering Who We Are Now. Very much an actors’ film, possibly to a fault, writer-director Matthew Newton’s Who We Are Now paperclips together the stories of an ambitious young lawyer with family issues (Emma Roberts) and an ex-convict (Julianne Nicholson) in need of support. Newton’s storytelling is skittish and a bit too on the nose at times, but his palpable generosity toward his cast is rewarded with committed, passionate turns from the ensemble. However, Nicholson, a performer all-too seldom given a chance to lead, is the big door prize here, offering an intricately layered performance that lifts the whole film up a notch. Perhaps if...
