Exclusive: Robert Walak and Alisa Tager will be leaving their posts as Presidents of Film & Television at AC Studios, the independent film and TV production studio that sits inside Anonymous Content, when their contracts are up in a couple of months.
Walak and Tager are expected to continue producing projects for AC Studios through an arrangement whose terms are still being worked out.
There are no details yet about the duo’s replacement though I hear UCP veteran Garrett Kemble, who joined Anonymous Content as EVP of Development for AC Studios last summer, reuniting with former UCP President Dawn Olmstead who is now CEO of Anonymous Content, is poised for a bigger role in light of Walak and Tager’s pending exit.

As the Toronto Film Festival acquisitions market gets cracking, I find it helpful to see how some of last year’s titles fared at the box office. It’s an instructive way to keep things in perspective. Titles below reflect theatrical grosses, but remember, multi-platform business is not reflected and in some cases has turned films into profitable winners. BitTorrent seems an unlikely ally for content creators given its past association with online piracy. But the file sharing site today unveiled yet another tool designed to help media makers to connect with fans – and profit from it. Its latest initiative, the BitTorrent Bundle, introduces a “gated” multimedia torrent designed to boost engagement within its 170 million-strong user base. The format allows creators to put content on offer on BitTorrent, add supplemental multimedia content of any file format or size, and set parameters for how fans can access the bonus materials, potentially via email gate, donation, or pay gate. BitTorrent’s Bundle launches in alpha with Edm music label Ultra Music but the company hopes film and TV creators take advantage of the program as an option for digital distribution. Bundle’s gated torrent could be unlocked, for example, by driving fans to Netflix, iTunes, a movie theater, or a Facebook page for a like.

A massive update from the MPAA has come in this afternoon beginning with a boatload of sequels such as Star Trek Into Darkness, Kick-Ass 2 and Grown Ups 2, the latter of which has one hell of a comical reason that includes a PG-13 for "some male rear nudity". Thanks for being so specific MPAA. We also have ratings for M. Night Shyamalan's After Earth, the zombie epic World War Z starring Brad Pitt, Neil Jordan's vampire effort Byzantium with Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan. Rounding out the well knowns is Fox's animated feature Epic and the star-studded comedy This is the End. Also included in this release is the Wesley Snipes zombie-hunting western Gallowalkers, which I featured the trailer for recently and at the same time noticed I first wrote about the film back in July 2006, which was a month before the film began production. Now that's...

I have some hope for a Shawn Levy comedy. Odd, I know, but all we’ve heard about his next behind-the-camera effort, The Internship, makes the thing sound wholly tolerable — even if it’s mostly due to the presence of Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. But there’s more reason to be optimistic, since Variety has pegged Max Minghella (The Social Network) as being in early talks; Tiya Sircar (Friends with Benefits), Josh Brener, and unknown Tobit Raphael have already signed.
The Vaughn-scripted film revolves around two middle-aged company employees (he and Wilson) who, after being laid off, start working for an up-and-coming website. While, overall, a good job, the presence of “wily, fresh-faced 22 year olds” creates some office tension; Minghella fits in as “a ruthlessly competitive intern” with the drive to play dirty in order to get ahead. Sircar and Brener will be seen as other employees, with the...

ABC‘s slate of new shows for fall has a strange flavor to it, and it’s going to be a bumpy ride. The network has about as many new shows as returning ones (if you count all the midseasons), and a good percentage of the returning offerings are a year old or less, making this look a bit like a rebuilding year.
Not only is it a rebuilding year, but it’s the year of bringing back every actor and actress who ever had a decent run on a show before. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a network’s new season slate that was so crammed with people returning from something else. If you can’t make it good, I suppose, make sure viewers recognize the faces.
It’s tricky to get a solid feel...

After dipping into romantic drama terrain with his debut film Xx/Xy and examining the dot-com bubble bursting a decade later in August, Austin Chick's Thelma and Louise take Manhattan like thriller has found a distributor with a fanbase to match. Anchor Bay Films have put the cuffs on the helmer's third directorial outing. Currently at the midday point of SXSW festival, the Midnight screening of Girls Against Boys played well before auds. Expect a limited theatrical release sometime this year. Gist: This is a psychological thriller about two girls on a killing spree. Think Thelma and the banned French film, Baise Moi. Worth Noting: Up-and-comer Nicole Laliberte starred in Gregg Araki's Kaboom, and will next be seen in Dante Ariola's Arthur Newman, Golf Pro. Do We Care?: We're iffy about these B-movie type clips but SXSW call this a "character-driven rather than action-driven" type of film.

Update: Scratch that. Twitch reports that Colin Firth has officially passed on the "Oldboy" project.
____________
Colin Firth could be the guy who locks Josh Brolin in a room for a very long time.
The "King's Speech" star has been offered the bad guy role in Spike Lee's remake of the now-classic Korean revenge drama, "Oldboy," according to Twitch.
Firth would be playing the very twisted individual who locks a man (to be played by Josh Brolin) in a nondescript room for 15 years. When the poor old boy is inexplicably released, he goes on a rampage, searching for answers and seeking revenge.
And those that have seen the original film know that sometimes ignorance is bliss.

After seeing Tomas Alfredson‘s hotly-anticipated Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - and adoring every crisply measured, atmospherically-stunning minute of it – I had the opportunity to sit down with some of the film’s primary contributors in a roundtable setting at New York’s Waldorf Astoria Towers. The interviews were conducted in small rooms with about six or seven other journalists, all of whom took turns eagerly questioning the film’s uniformly impressive cast of creators for their information and insight.
Below is the question-and-answer conversation that resulted with Oscar-winner Colin Firth, who plays the flamboyant Bill Haydon in the film. Like all of Tinker‘s supporting performers, Firth is relegated to minimal screen time (this is a film that truly defines the term “ensemble”), but the subtle perceptivity he brings to his character leaves a lasting imprint.

It’s being reported by The Daily Mail (via ThePlaylist) that Rachel Weisz has now been cast alongside Oscar winner Colin Firth in the post-World War II drama The Railway Man, an adaptation of Eric Lomax‘s influential novel of the same name.
That original text saw Lomax detail his experiences before, during, and after he was sent to a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp in 1942 when serving as a second lieutenant. Firth will be playing the lead, who was crucial in the building of the structure David Lean made legendary in The Bridge on the River Kwai. Weisz, meanwhile, has the part of Patricia Wallace, Lomax’s wife who helped him overcome his trauma. With news hitting two weeks ago that French film producer Pierre-Ange Le Pogam is developing a biopic of the beautiful and tragic icon Grace Kelly for the big screen titled Grace of Monaco, a fierce battle between Hollywood actresses’ is likely to already be underway for the widely coveted role.
Film biopics are big business with audiences and during awards seasons and they are truly never big when a biopic is dealing with a Hollywood legend or a member of Royalty. With Grace of Monaco delving into the life of both, this is one hot Oscar-baiting ticket for somebody out there.
Based on Arash Amel’s script, Grace of Monaco focuses on six months of Kelly’s life in 1962 when the then Princess of Monaco was instrumental in resolving a heated dispute between France and it’s small principality which it was believed had become a tax haven for the rich.

Dark comedy Arthur Newman, Golf Pro already has the likes of Colin Firth and Emily Blunt aboard. Now it's adding Anne Heche to the cast.
Arthur Newman will find Firth as a man who absolutely loathes his boring job, is hated by his family and regularly admonished by his overbearing girlfriend (Heche). So he decides to pull a Reggie Perrin and fake his own death in the hopes of starting a new life.
From the sounds of it, his plan initially works well, as he meets a charming yet troubled girl (Blunt) and conspires with her to break into people's houses and pose as the couples while the original owners are away. Which, we assume, is where the title comes into it.
Though it sounds like an awfully lightweight concept for a comedy (and not completely original), the cast is at least decent. Adverts veteran Dante Ariola is behind the camera,...

One of the characters that was high on my list of suspects among those who may have had a hand in the murder of teen Rosie Larson in AMC.s The Killing was Kristin Lehman.s character Gwen Eaton. Whether or not that theory holds up through the later episodes of the first season of the mystery series, I couldn.t say, as I fell behind and have yet to get caught up on the show. From the sound of the new role Lehman.s character is playing in the upcoming film Arthur Newman, Golf Pro, it.s doubtful she.ll be a murder suspect at any point, but there is death involved... sort of. Arthur Newman, Golf Pro is a dark comedy that stars Colin Firth as Wallace Avery, an unhappy man who fakes his own death to escape his job and his family, and creates a new identify...

Kristin Lehman (AMC's "The Killing," "The Sentinel") has signed on to join the cast of the dark comedy "Arthur Newman, Golf Pro" at Cross Creek Pictures says Variety.
Colin Firth stars as Wallace Avery, a man who hates his job and is despised by his family. He decides to fake his own death and create a new identity, along the way meeting a young woman (Emily Blunt) with her own troubled past.
The pair start breaking into empty homes to pose as the absent owners. Lehman will play Firth's ex-wife, who lives with their son and her new husband.
Dante Ariola directs from a script by Becky Johnston. Johnston, Brian Oliver and Alisa Tager will produce with shooting to commence this month in North Carolina.

World War Z has been in production long for months and months, which led me to assume that casting had been completed. Turns out that’s not the case; Deadline says that David Morse, a character actor best known for roles in The Green Mile, The Rock, and Twelve Monkeys, will be appearing in the zombie film based on Max Brooks‘ novel. His character is only described as “a prisoner living in an abandoned jail,” and, when combined with the late addition, it seems like a pretty small part. But Morse is a talented actor, so having him on board should serve as a nice little bonus.

We recently highlighted a potentially juicy project featuring a collaboration between Colin Firth and Gary Oldman — both of whom, as you surely know, appear in Tomas Alfredson‘s reportedly excellent espionage thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Firth also has a part in the upcoming Gambit, a Coen brothers-scripted, Michael Hoffman-directed con movie, along with a role in Dante Ariola‘s Arthur Newman, Golf Pro. Another film has now been added to the Oscar-winner’s busy slate: The Railway Man, to be directed by Jonathan Teplitzky (Burning Man). [The Playlist]
In the film, Firth will play “Eric Lomax, a real-life army officer who suffered at the hands of Japanese soldiers during World War II, only to seek revenge decades later.” Frank Cottrell Boyce and Andy Paterson co-wrote the film’s screenplay, which has been defined by Lionsgate UK CEO Zygi Kamasa as an “epic tale of love and redemption.” Word is that...
