The legendary English punk rock band The Sex Pistols are now getting their own documentary film which is based on the memoir by one of its founding members, Glen Matlock. Based on Matlock’s 1990 tell-all novel ‘I Was A Teenage Sex Pistol’, the film will follow Matlock’s journey as a Pistols founding member and a musician who wrote 10 of the 12 iconic tracks on their only studio album, ‘Never Mind the Bollocks’ as well as provided bass and backing vocals on ‘Anarchy in the U.K’, before leaving the band in 1977.
As the description goes, the documentary feature will chart the Pistols’ rise to global infamy with an honest, insightful account of a group of malcontents, determined to change the music business and to attack hypocrisy and stale conventions in society at large, according to ‘The Hollywood Reporter’.

They say “sex sells” in Hollywood, right? But what about drugs? After all, once the production code was lifted, successful counterculture drug movies like Easy Rider gave way to the indie auteur movement in American cinema in the 1960s and 70s, where Hollywood renegades like Brian De Palma and Martin Scorsese picked up the mantle and went on to make all-time classics like Scarface and Goodfellas decades later. In the interim, there has been no shortage of critical and commercial drug movie successes, be they Blow, Sicario, Traffic, The Wolf of Wall Street, you name it.

Exclusive: Shout! Studios has acquired all North American rights to the feature documentary Refuge from levelFILM, Katie Couric Media and Artemis Rising Foundation. The multi-platform entertainment distribution and production arm of Shout! Factory plans to release the film in theaters and across all major digital platforms early next year.
Directed and produced by award winners Erin Bernhardt and Din Blankenship, Refuge is set in the most diverse square mile in America — Clarkston, Georgia — and follows a Syrian Kurd, a former Klansman, and a town of refugees who seek belonging in a country that blames them for its problems. Swimming against the current of an increasingly polarized and isolated America, each must decide whether they will risk knowing and being known by those who oppose them. Ultimately, Refuge uncovers what is possible when we leave the security of our tribes, and what is at stake for our country if we don’t.

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. As far as...

Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

The 2013 documentary Robert Williams: Mr. Bitchin’ provides a lively look at the life and career of the renowned American underground artist and cartoonist Robert Williams, whose counter-culture artwork often features images of naked women, death, destruction, booze and clowns.
In the early 1960s, emerging artist Williams was confronted with trendy abstraction and superficial pop art. Schooled in the Hot Rod Culture of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth and Von Dutch, he emerged as a leader in the Underground Comic revolution along with R. Crumb, contributing regularly to Zap Comix. His antisocial paintings of an alternative reality were marginalized by the art world for decades although he became a hero of sorts for underground artists. His notoriety exploded when his painting Appetite for Destruction was used (and much vilified) as the cover for that 1987 Guns n’ Roses album.

There’s been a whole glut of toy-based films these past few years — you may know them simply because they refuse to go away — so it’s about time the men behind the products got a little spotlight. That’s just what’s happening with Snake & Mongoose, which, according to Variety, has grabbed Noah Wyle to play Arthur Spear, a ’70s Mattel executive responsible for introducing commercial advertising in the world of car racing.
The film itself — written by Alan Paradise & Wayne Holloway, and directed by the latter — also focuses on Don “The Snake” Prudhomme (Jesse Williams) and Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen (Richard Blake), two racers who were given a big boost when Spear decided to place the Hot Wheels logo on the side of their cars, making the toy “the first non-automotive sponsor in a racing sport.” Along with the obvious financial benefit to be gained from the partnership,...

After starring in SXSW’s opener Cabin in the Woods and playing Dr. Jackson Avery on Grey’s Anatomy for the past few years, it was only a matter of time before Jesse Williams made his way up through Hollywood. Now, Variety is reporting that he has been cast to lead Snake and Mongoose, alongside Richard Blake.
Mongoose tells the true story of drag racing legends Don “the Snake” Prudhomme (Williams) and Tom “Mongoose” McEwen (Blake) and their longtime friendship and rivalry. Wayne Holloway is set to direct, with a script by Alan Paradise. This marks Holloway‘s feature length debut — he previously directed two shorts titled God’s Wounds and We’re Staying Home.
Stephen Nemeth will produce the drama alongside Robin Broidy through Nemeth‘s Rhino Films and Broidy‘s Entertainment Universe. The real Prudhomme and McEwen will be billed as executive producers for the project, with Paradise.

#65. The Surrogate - Ben Lewin I'm thinking of Bardem's perf in The Sea Inside and that there might be some huge payoffs performance wise for thesps John Hawkes (see pic above of Mark O'Brien above) and Helen Hunt in what looks to be the sort of film that Sundance embraces - a thought-provoking film item that has the ability to stir up some sort of debate. I'm unfamiliar with helmer Ben Lewin's body of work include began with doc films for Granada back in the 70's and includes the award-winning 1988 film Georgia, but I'm sure The Surrogate might call plenty of attention to itself. Depending on the scope - this is either a U.S Dramatic or Premieres category possibility. Gist: This story is about Mark O'Brien, a [quadriplegic] polio victim, who lived most of his life in an iron lung, paralyzed from the neck down. The film, set in the late '80s,...

Hunt will be playing the main character who is struggling to separate her personal life from her professional one. Along with those two, Moon Bloodgood and Rhea Perlman will be part of the cast. The eighties-set film will explore O'Brien's manhood and depict his strong spirit through his relationships with nurses,...
