The Oscars is supposed to be film’s biggest night, but on Sunday the awards ceremony borrowed from television. It’s a touching ballad and thematically appropriate, but it’s also an original song from the short-lived NBC music series “Smash.” Oscars executive producers Neil Moran and Craig Zadan were both also executive producers on “Smash,” canceled in 2013, so clearly they knew where the song had originated. Neil Patrick Harris can finally be crossed off your Oscar host wish list, as he has been named the host for 2015′s 87th Annual Academy Awards Ceremony on Sunday, February 22.
Oscar producer Neil Moran tweeted the news earlier today, and Nph himself shared a short video of him crossing this task off his own bucket list.

Patrick Harris has had great success as a host of both the Emmys and Tonys in the past few years, but the Oscars have always eluded him because he’s never been much of a movie guy. That changed this month with the release of Gone Girl, a sure-fire contender, and Nph is fantastic in it.

This year's Oscars is all about celebrating the legacy of film. In addition to honoring the James Bond film series, the 85th Academy Awards will also celebrate the last decade of movie musicals.
This news started with the announcement that the cast of "Chicago" would reunite on the Oscars stage on Feb. 24. Now show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Moran have revealed that musicals from the past 10 years will be honored with performances highlighting Oscar winners and nominees "Chicago," "Dreamgirls," and "Les Miserables," and that the actors in those movies will be involved.
"We are pleased to have been able to amass so much talent to create the celebration of musicals of the last decade that we envisioned," Zadan and Meron say in a statement. "We are thrilled that so many talented actors have agreed to bring our vision to life."

Having already done the festival rounds and picked up several awards along the way, action/horror mash-up Bonnie and Clyde vs. Dracula is ready hit screens big and small. If I'd only read the film description, I'm not sure how interested I'd be, but this preview roped me right in. Writer/Director Timothy Friend (Cadaverella) throws us back to the 1930s, where the infamous duo get themselves mixed up with a force even worse than the police. After a bank robbery goes bad, Bonnie (Tiffany Shepis, Tromeo and Juliet, The Violent Kind) and Clyde (Trent Haaga, Suburban Nightmare, Gimme Skelter) seek refuge at the home of Dr. Loveless (Allen Lowman, Ride with the Devil), but something strange and unexpected lurks in the basement. Here's the kickass trailer:
The only thing missing is Olyphantypants.
Bonnie and Clyde vs Dracula also stars T Max Graham (Eraserhead, Ride with the Devil), theater actress,...

Indie filmmaker Patrick Rea contacted Dread Central recently to let us know about Dark Matter, a new concept in monthly DVD clubs that focuses on a mixture of suspense, science fiction, and fantasy stories, often concluding with a thought-provoking, chilling, or unexpected turn of events.
Here's how it works according to the Dark Matter website:
Essentially, Dark Matter is a Twilight Zone-like anthology series delivered monthly to subscribers on DVD via mail. Don't be fooled by the name, it's not about darkness -- it's about the stories that have been hidden from our sight and the amazing possibilities they contain.
For $19.95 a month (plus shipping and handling), you receive a new DVD every month with 4-5 movies that have been hand-selected for people who appreciate compelling stories. The DVDs you receive from Dark Matter are yours to keep forever. You never have to return anything, and you may cancel any time.

We're always happy to receive an update from indie filmmaker Patrick Rea as to what's he's been doing, and today is no exception. According to a press release Patrick recently sent over, production companies SenoReality and Free State Studios have just wrapped on a new short film titled "Mrs. Brumett’s Garden". Writer/director Rea calls it a "Twilight Zone-esque [story] about an elderly woman who claims to be talking to fairies in her garden. The film seems innocent at first but has a dark edge to it."
The short, which stars T-Max Graham and Shirley Wagner, is currently being edited and will be scored by horror composer Harry Manfedini. Hopefully, as we have done with Rea's "Next Caller" and "Now That You're Dead", among others, Dread Central will be premiering "Mrs. Brumett's Garden" once it's finished. In the meantime check out the two production stills below, and keep it...

Patrick Rea of SenoReality Pictures sent along a couple of photos from his latest short genre film, a collaboration with fellow Lawrence, Kansas company Free State Studios called Mrs. Brumett’S Garden. The movie, which Rea compares to vintage Twilight Zone, focuses on an elderly woman (Shirley Wagner) who claims to be talking to fairies in her garden.
“The story seems innocent at first, but has a dark edge to it,” Rea says of Garden, which also stars T-Max Graham. Currently in the editing stages, the short will be scored by genre composer Harry (Friday The 13th) Manfedini. The busy SenoReality is also finishing up postproduction on another supernatural short, the comedically oriented Misfortune Smiles starring Jeff (Pumpkinhead) East, and has two more minimovies—Now That You’Re Dead, with Jennifer Plas from Rea’s feature The Empty Acre, and Next Caller, toplining Allan (Night Of The Creeps) Kayser—doing the festival circuit.
