We know which comic book movies made the most money in 2012. And we could argue endlessly about which movie was the best of the year in terms of quality. But how do these films' heroes and villains rank when judging them by their Bacon Numbers?
Bacon Numbers, if you don't already know, are a new form of Google metric that assigns a number to any given celebrity based on their closeness to a Kevin Bacon film. Just Google the words "Bacon Number" and your film star of choice's name together, and you'll get your answer. It's the most search-friendly way to play Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, and a fantastic time-suck besides.
So, that out of the way, I spent a sad amount of time today getting the Bacon Numbers of some of 2012's most prominent comic book movie characters. The results differ greatly from what I'd consider the best films of the year.

When Chronicle first hit theaters, many mistook the film for another alien invasion flick. The marketing posters drummed up thoughts of 2011’s failed blockbuster, Skyline, while the shaky cam style was a reminder of Cloverfield. However, the film was only remotely about aliens (and even that point is never quite clear) and more about teenage acceptance. Truthfully, it was a super powered tale in the vein of Spider-Man or the Fantastic Four. The pacing in Chronicle may be a little slow for theatergoers, but on Blu-ray you can better savor this slow-build sci-fi tale.
The film begins by introducing us to Andrew Detmer (Dane DeHaan), an outcast teenager with an abusive father. Andrew has just bought a new camera and is documenting his life. Most of the movie is depicted through the lens of the camera, with only a few moments taking place off camera. Andrew sits in the shadow of his cousin,...

As if Marvel Studios didn't have enough on its plate already, the ambitious production company plans on churning out a fourth as-of-yet-unknown movie after the completion of "Iron Man 3," "Thor 2," and "Captain America 2," in that order. Well, rumor has it that this fourth superhero flick will revolve around none other than Africa's own T'Challa a.k.a. The Black Panther.
Hailing from the fictional African nation of Wakanda, the Black Panther is arguably one of Marvel's most formidable non-American superheroes. As Chieftain of the Wakandan Panther Clan, T'Challa is gifted with superhuman strength, speed, stamina, and agility, as well as a direct mental link to the Wakandan Panther god.
In addition to his superhuman traits, T'Challa is also an expert hunter, strategist, politician, inventor and scientist, with a Ph.D in physics from Oxford University. Clearly, it'll take some big feet to fill the shoes of the Black Panther.

Chronicle’s trailer appealed to the comic book geek inside of me. Not only did it have “superheroes” but it was shot in the found-footage format. Found-footage is a style that I find effective in certain genres and I was curious to see how it worked in this context. Even with all my love for the found-footage films, I am beginning to feel a bit exhausted; I have seen Grave Encounters, Atrocious, Paranormal Activity 3, and Undocumented in less than half a year and my enthusiasm for the sub-genre has lessened. Chronicle pushed aside that fatigue for me though, the idea was fresh and I am baffled that no one has executed this premise sooner. Cloverfield mixed with X-Men is an altogether appetizing notion, but at the end of my viewing, I felt that maybe the Cloverfield part could have been removed. Chronicle creates some astounding scenes but it stumbles...

HollywoodNews.com: I’ve written a lot over the last couple years about how, if superhero films are going to survive, they are going to have to be able to be about something other than the generic tropes of superhero comic book adventures. Captain America excelled because it was a World War II period action drama, while Green Lantern mostly faltered because it wasn’t about anything other than its own conventions. Chronicle (written by Max Landis and directed by Josh Trank) is a shining example of a powerful emotional tragedy that involves certain comic book conventions without really being about them. At heart, the picture is a fierce rebuttal of the now-cliche ‘with great power comes a superior destiny’ motif that has been central to the last ten years of big-budget fantasy pictures, both those based on comics and those based on young-adult fantasy novels. If there's one trend in Hollywood that has worn out its welcome pretty quickly, it's the "found-footage" genre of filmmaking. Since The Blair Witch Project in 1999, Wikipedia lists 79 other film projects in the genre. In the grand scheme of things, 79 films in 13 years may not seem like that many, but when you consider that the biggest problem with the genre is that the movies are on some level all the same, therein lies the issue. We need something different, and we need it badly.
Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity deviated from the formula a little bit but at the heart, they weren't that different. Chronicle promises something different, but can it deliver on that promise? Director Josh Trank and writer Max Landis certainly have had a hard task before them.
The plot of Chronicle is pretty simple. Andrew (Dane DeHaan), an unpopular loner, decides to document everything in his life as a way of opening up.

Chicago – “Chronicle,” which stars blah, blah and blah with a special appearance by blah (you wouldn’t know these unknowns any way), is the latest found-footage film to find itself lost, lacking purpose and devoid of a cohesive plot. This film’s fanboy ejaculate loves you short time as it spews the buildup of what could be interpreted as a “story” and ultimately ends without one.

We can forgivingly leave to moviemaking mystery how a few kids develop superhero telekinesis from a weakly scripted, inexplicable, underground rock formation from which our story never returns to explore. But we cannot excuse a story that lacks a true protagonist, antagonist and an overall plot in exchange for three kids simply running around aimlessly and experimenting with their newfound power.
Even if you enjoy this special-effects joyride with a cast of new actors you won’t know, you’ll be hard pressed...

Chronicle uses familiar themes and standard visual effects to tell a superhero story that feels fresh and original. If you can stand the shaky camerawork and you love comic book movies, this is worth checking out.
Andrew Detmer is a troubled young teenager. His father is an abusive alcoholic. His mother is dying of cancer. He’s picked on at school and no girls are interested in him. Andrew’s only friend is his cousin, Matt Garetty. As a way of placing a barrier between him and real life, he begins filming his everyday life with a video camera.
Everything changes when Matt, Andrew, and the most popular kid in school, Steve Montgomery, find a mysterious object buried in the ground in the woods. Chronicle
Directed by: Josh Trank
Cast: Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell, Michael B. Jordan
Running Time: 1 hr 23 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: February 3, 2012
Plot: A trio of high school seniors are given super powers after they come across a mysterious hole in the ground.
Who’S It For?: Male teenagers are Chronicle’s primary target, but like any decent multiplex movie, this one has a strong reach beyond its immediate audience. This is for the same type of crowd who entrusted a movie like Cloverfield with their ignorance, and were rewarded with jolting surprises in return.
Expectations: I had no expectations with the oddly titled Chronicle, but I had a lot of fears. Would it be like Kick-Ass with super powers? Would it be another cheap and plain sh*tty fake documentary movie like last month’s The Devil Inside? Would I just be watching d-bags play with their super powers for 90 minutes?...

2012 is a huge year for super hero movies. Marvel's The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises are casting such large shadows that it's easy to overlook the other options in the genre, but Chronicle is simply a movie you cannot miss. It's hilarious, it's dark and you'll have to pick your jaw up off the floor before you leave the cinema.
Chornicle follows three high school friends that develop superpowers after making an odd discovery near a party. The trio soon discovers that the power is just like a muscle; the more you work it out, the more powerful it will become. The primary focus is on the man with the camera, Andrew Detmer (Dane DeHaan). The poor guy has a dying mother with a need for medication they can't afford, a drunk and abusive father, and to top it off, the students at school treat him like dirt. Then...

Michael B. Jordan has certainly kept busy over the years. He had The Wire back in 2002, then it was on to All My Children for nearly four years after which he moved over to The Assistants and then hit Friday Night Lights and Parenthood. When did this guy have time to make two movies? Jordan had a part in the January 20th release Red Tails and now he.s returning to the big screen yet again in Josh Trank.s Chronicle. Jordan stars as Steve Montgomery, the quintessential big man on campus. He.s a star athlete, running for class president and is a favorite amongst the ladies. However, one night, Steve winds up adding another skill to his resume . superpowers. When Steve and Matt (Alex Russell) stumble upon a bizarrely deep hole in the woods during a party, they recruit Matt.s cousin Andrew (Dane DeHaan) to bring his...

To date, "Chronicle" is the best superhero movie of 2012. Granted, it's the only superhero movie of 2012 — so far. Plenty of comic book competitors are coming down the pike (some sooner than later, with a vengeance at that), but the bar has been set: director Josh Trank's found-footage superhero flick is a terrific time at the movies, and more than deserving of your time if you have 80+ minutes to spare.
Here are five reasons you should see "Chronicle" this weekend.
Power
We've seen fun superhero movies before, but I don't know that we've ever seen a movie that's had as much fun with superpowers as "Chronicle." Sure, Magneto slow-motioning a coin through his long lost foe's noggin was pretty sweet, but "Chronicle" might do an even better job of showing the sheer joy and pure rage that comes with having superhuman abilities. The scenes of playful discovery and wrathful destruction are totally awesome to behold.

Despite a varied critical reaction, “found-footage” has proven successful as a subset of cinema, with its allowance of cheap production design and minimal effects. But what happens when you marry it with a genre that lives and breathes on the excess of both? Chronicle marks the first experiment in taking a superhero blockbuster and molding it to the aesthetic. And, with an emotional story at its core, Josh Trank’s debut mostly succeeds, thanks to believable characters and continual twists and turns, but eventually weakened due to its reliance on the method it so desperately clings to.
Written by Max Landis (son of John), Chronicle follows three high school students who uncover secret powers after a night of partying. Andrew Detmer (Dane DeHaan) is given the bulk of the story, as an outcast who lives with an abusive father and a mother in need of serious medical attention. His cousin,...

Director Josh Trank's Chronicle sets out to challenge your perceptions of what exactly constitutes a superhero movie just as much as it sets out to redefine the "found footage" genre (or conceit, as some would say). While it's not entirely successful at the latter, it pulls off the former quite well. My full review hit later this week and, despite some minor problems I had with the movie, I think it's well worth checking out. Before I saw the film (but after I saw about 30 minutes of footage) I had the chance to hop on the phone with Michael B. Jordan, a super charismatic actor who plays the super charismatic Steve Montgomery in the movie. Fans of "Friday Night Lights" (and Red Tails) will no doubt be familiar with the actor.

Alexander Kluge speaks at the Oberhausen Manifesto press conference 1962
For all the news tumbling out of Rotterdam and Berlin over the past couple of weeks, we don't want to overlook a couple of pretty major announcements coming from other festivals regarding their upcoming editions. Starting with this one: "The 58th International Short Film Festival Oberhausen will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Oberhausen Manifesto (February 28, 2012) with a large-scale thematic program entitled Provoking Reality: Mavericks, Mouvements, Manifesto. To honor the anniversary of the Manifesto, perhaps the single most important group document in German film history, the festival has compiled a selection of films of the signatories, many of which have not been shown for decades and had to be restored expressly for the program."
In addition to the inevitable panel discussion, there'll also be a double DVD from Edition Filmmuseum and, in German, a collection of essays. Before moving on, this...

A convenient method of charging electronics on low battery is set to hit malls, cafes, and airports across the country.
Pay-per-use electrical outlet access for re-charging laptops and electric bicycles will soon become a reality, benefiting not only customers with urgent power needs, but also the retailers who install the new technology, titled SafePlug(R) Model 1200-P3, and literally sell the electricity. The SafePlug is being released by 2D2C, Inc. and comes in the form of two parts: an electrical outlet and a small tap card, or "key-fob." The card allows customers to pre-pay for electricity-charging minutes at participating retailers, including airports, cafes, malls, and just about anywhere with electrical outlets. And all that's required of retailers is to do a quick, one-minute retrofit of their existing outlets to make room for the key card-enabled SafePlug.
