Each "Star Trek" show is, despite its tendency to focus on starship and space station captains, an ensemble drama. Each series (the first two seasons of "Picard" notwithstanding) is about the workplace dynamic on board a space vessel, with characters of different backgrounds and personalities working together to solve crises. The characters may occasionally butt heads, but "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry (in)famously discouraged that sort of conflict, preferring to depict a future where everyone got along, or at least treated each other with professional respect.
The group dynamic of "Star Trek," however, occasionally led to a perhaps-unconscious reliance on certain archetypes. Each Trek show, for the most part, features Stalwart Captain, Approachable Guy, Sensitive Soul, Culture Shock Alien, The Muscle, The Broody Outsider, Impatient Weirdo, Nerdy Tech-Head, and Inexperienced Noob. These broad "types" could alternately be combined into a single character or spread among many, but one can...

The veteran TV helmer, who directed three episodes of Picard‘s Season 1, has penned a guest column for Deadline about her personal and professional perspective on the industry and the challenges achieving equality.

For those of you who don’t know (you won’t), there’s a new sci-fi spoof on the way called Unbelievable!!!!! It stars Snoop Dogg, 42 former Star Trek actors, Michael Madsen, and a ficus on a skateboard. That ought to answer all of your questions.
In the can for what appears to have been an eternity (some of the footage dates back as far as 2013), the film does at last have a release date. I say at last, but I’m not sure it was at the top of anyone’s list of movie treasure troves. Anyway, if you’re feeling particularly trashy (there’s no shame in that), sit down for Unbelievable!!!!! in an online premiere this August 1st. The premiere will also come with a virtual convention.

Chandler Massey (“Days of Our Lives”) will win the Daytime Emmy for Best Supporting Actor according to our official predictions, which place him out front with leading odds of 4/5. Winners will be announced on Sunday night, April 29, after being decided by blue ribbon panels that watched sample performance reels. Gold Derby contributor Tony Ruiz and I watched all the submissions and agree that Massey is out front, but he’s not a slam dunk by any means. He faces tough competition. Watch our predictions slugfest above.
“Chandler Massey knows how to submit, clearly. He’s won three out of four times [for Best Younger Actor] and could easily go four-out-of-five,” says Ruiz about Massey’s performance as his character struggles with amnesia and assault. “There’s a lot of emotional range. I think the scene with the strangling … he’s spectacular in that scene, the kind of explosive anger than Emmy voters love.” I agree with Ruiz,...

Laura Wright has been a daytime TV star for 27 years, but she didn’t receive her first Daytime Emmy nomination until 2011, when she contended for and won Best Actress for playing Carly Corinthos on “General Hospital.” She’s now nominated for the fifth time in seven years for the role. Can she prevail again? The winners will be announced on April 29, but they’ve already been decided in the soap opera acting categories by blue ribbon panels that watched sample performance reels. Watch Wright’s submission above.
Wright’s reel consists of three separate storylines. In the first scene Carly confronts Sonny (Maurice Benard) about keeping a secret: Nelle (Best Younger Actress nominee Chloe Lanier) drugged Sonny and fooled him into thinking they had an affair as part of a revenge plot against Carly. Sonny knew about the scheme but kept his mouth shut and thus let Carly continue trusting...

Billy Miller has been an Emmy darling in recent years, winning three times out of six nominations since 2010. He won Best Supporting Actor for “The Young and the Restless” in 2010 and 2013. Then he won Best Actor for “Y&R” in 2014. But after that he moved over to “General Hospital,” and now he’s nominated for the ABC soap for the first time. Can he win Best Actor again? The awards will be handed out on April 29, but they’ve already been decided in the drama acting categories by blue ribbon panels that viewed sample performance reels. Watch Miller’s submission above.
“I can’t for the life of me figure out how I got here,” says Miller at one point during his reel, and he’s not kidding. For half of his scenes he’s playing Jason Morgan, a role that was previously played by Emmy winner Steve Burton. However,...

Soap fans have become accustomed to seeing Wally Kurth on their televisions. He has been a fixture of daytime TV for more than three decades, with roles on “Days of Our Lives” and “As the World Turns.” But Kurth’s best known role — as Ned Ashton on ABC’s “General Hospital” — has finally earned the veteran actor a nomination for Best Supporting Actor. An accomplished musician, Kurth won an Emmy in 2002 for writing an original song for “Gh,” but can he bring home an acting Emmy on his first time at bat? The winners have been decided by blue ribbon panels that viewed sample performance reels. Watch Kurth’s submission above.
This reel is bookended by relationship developments between Ned and Olivia (Lisa LoCicero). Ned proposes to Olivia, but after previous heartaches for both of them Olivia is hesitant, wondering why they need a document to prove their love for each other.

Greg Rikaart left the role of Kevin Fisher on CBS’s “The Young and the Restless” in 2017, but his work during his departure helped earn him a Daytime Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Rikaart previously won an Emmy for this role in 2005 on his first of four consecutive nominations in this category. Will the Emmy voters reward him with the ultimate parting gift? The winners of the Emmys will be announced April 29, but blue ribbon panels have already decided the winners after viewing sample performance reels. Watch Rikaart’s submission above.
The reel consists of two short scenes revolving around the death of Kevin’s wife Chloe (Best Supporting Actress nominee Elizabeth Hendrickson). The reel begins with Kevin delivering a tearful eulogy at Chloe’s funeral. He tells Chloe that the world didn’t understand her and that she had endured more pain than others could imagine, including the death of her daughter Delia.

Montgomery’s reel begins with a breakup scene between Andre and Jordan Ashford (Vinessa Antoine). Jordan has admitted to kissing another man, and Andre finally tells her that he wants more from her than she’s willing to give him. He pleads with her, “Admit that I’m not the one that you want.”

After more than 15 years in daytime TV Greg Vaughan earned his very first Daytime Emmy nomination this year: Best Supporting Actor for his role as Eric Brady on “Days of Our Lives.” The role had previously been played by current “Supernatural” star Jensen Ackles, who earned Younger Actor nominations from 1998-2000. The winners will be announced on April 29, but they’ve already been decided in the drama acting categories by blue ribbon panels that viewed sample performance reels. Dozens Of ‘Star Trek’ Actors Converge For Snoop Dogg’s Parody Pic ‘Unbelievable’ – Watch The Trailer
It’s a Trekkie delight. No idea why so many Star Trek actors thought this was a great idea, but they did. Snoop Dogg seems to be the furthest thing away from sci-fi as you can get, but he’s one of the stars Unbelievable, a parody film that uses a puppet for James T. Kirk. Watch the trailer for below.
The original score was written/composed by Emmy-winning, Oscar-nominated Gerald Fried — the last living composer from the original Star Trek series.
Snoop Dogg executive produced the film from writer-director Steven Fawcette that also stars Nichelle Nichols (who also co-produced), Angelique Fawcette (also a producer), Michael Madsen and Robert Davi. Also in the film are Casper Smart, Sam Asghari, Gilbert Gottfried and newcomer Katarina Van Derham.

In the Daytime Emmy race for Best Younger Actor, Hudson West is nominated for playing Jake Webber on ABC’s “General Hospital,” a role he has played since 2016. The 45th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards nominations honoring the best in daytime television were announced on Wednesday, March 21, live on the CBS talk show “The Talk.” Winners will be revealed during the Creative Arts Daytime Emmys on April 27, followed by the main ceremony on Sunday, April 29. So who made the cut for these awards? Scroll down for the complete list.
The Daytime Emmy Awards cover a wide variety of programming including soap operas, talk shows, game shows, children’s shows, animation and more. In recent years the awards have also expanded into the online streaming realm, just like their primetime counterparts, so digital drama series and programs from Netflix and Amazon are also represented.
The awards for dramatic acting are unique as they undergo an extra pre-nominations phase of voting. TV academy members watched short sample clips of all entrants for lead and supporting awards. The top 10 vote-getters in each category became the pre-nominees,...

When it comes to Best Supporting Actor at the Daytime Emmys, it usually pays to bet on “General Hospital.” The ABC soap opera has won the category 11 times, far more than any other series, and this year “Gh” could have an overwhelming impact on the category as it accounts for 5 of the 10 pre-nominees in the race. The favorite to win with 12/5 odds is one of “Gh’s” past winners, Chad Duell. Do you agree with our predictions that he’s the front-runner?
Duell has played mob scion Michael Corinthos for eight years, since he assumed the role in 2010. Before him the role had been played by child actor Dylan Cash (2002-2008) and then as a young adult by Drew Garrett (2009-2010). Duell was also fairly young when he stepped into the role, so he earned three Daytime Emmy nominations for Best Younger Actor (2011-2012, 2014) before aging out of that category.

On January 25 the national television academy announced the pre-nominations for the 2018 Daytime Emmy Awards, and “Days of Our Lives’ leads the way with 20 entries, followed by “General Hospital” with 17, “The Young and the Restless” with 15, and “The Bold and the Beautiful” rounding out the list with 9. Scroll down for the complete list of contenders.
These preliminary lists in the drama series acting categories were determined by eligible peer voters who watched sample performances from all entrants before selecting the top 10 contenders in each category. (Due to a tie, there are 11 pre-nominees for Best Actress.) These pre-nominees will now advance to the blue ribbon round starting on February 22, when voters will watch performance submissions to vote for the best. The blue ribbon round is especially consequential as it will determine the ultimate winners as well as the nominees.
The only categories that function differently in the pre-nominations are Best Younger Actor and Best Younger Actress.

Admiral Maxwell Forrest, Starfleet Command, to Captain Jonathan Archer • “Broken Bow” • Episode 1, Season 1, Enterprise
As I mentioned in last week’s column (Oh Boy), Scott Bakula also starred as Captain Jonathan Archer on Enterprise, which ran on the Upn network from September 2001 to May 2005, a total of four years. That’s one more year than Tos’s run, but three years shorter than its successful progenitors, Next Gen, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager.
Upn claimed that poor ratings caused Enterprise’s downfall; according to Wikipedia, it never rose above the Top 100 rank in the Neilson ratings system, debuting at #115, and continuing to sink until its final season, where it landed at #148. It’s generally perceived as a failure, and has been blamed for the lack of any Star Trek on either television or movie screens until J.J. Abrams’s 2009 film reboot of the franchise.

The voyage continues for the brave first crew of the Enterprise. It’s a bit disheartening as modern audiences (such as me) discover what a good show it was (although still some clunker episodes) now that the voyage is over. Paramount/CBS also ponies up some excellent special features to help tell the behind-the-scenes tales of why Enterprise stopped boldly going. The Nx-01 Enterprise is commanded by Capt. Why Am I Doing This? is a comedy about a struggling actor and comedian trying to make it in Hollywood. It stars Anthony Montgomery (I'm Through With Girls), Lynn Chen (Saving Face) and Tom Huang who wrote and directed it. It's the type of quirky multicultural story that independent cinema needs. I'm hoping that Huang forms a Judd Apatow-like band of actors and crafts more starring roles for Montgomery and Chen (plus Sheetal Sheth, James Kyson Lee and Fernanda Andrade).
You can catch Why Am I Doing This? on the big screen for a limited engagement at the Laemmle Music Hall theater in Los Angeles until May 20th.
