The Crystal Maze, Cyber Zone, Fort Boyard... We look back at the UK game shows that dared to ask more than just quiz questions...
If the idea of yet another TV game show with an uninspiring presenter and ever so slight spin on the tried and tested Q&A formula fills you with apathy, you're not alone. Although TV quiz shows often rake in the viewers for a relatively low production budget, hence their popularity with TV studios, the whole genre feels a little stagnant. Perhaps it's the rise of the Internet, a general change in viewer culture, and the changing tastes that come with it. While many shows of the past delighted audiences with images of shiny new appliances, cars, and holidays to far-off destinations, today's shows mostly award cold, hard, and boring cash. Great for the winner, but not too interesting for the viewer. Give...

The ever-popular Crystal Maze finished its live run some 20 years ago today and is set to make a comeback soon in the form of a "live immersive experience".
Running for six series from 1990 to 1995, the Richard O'Brien (and Ed Tudor-Pole) fronted series is still an awesome watch on digital channel Challenge to this day.
So while we're all getting out our multi-coloured tracksuits in preparation for the live event, which is still having its set built, we cast our minds back to just why the Channel 4 game show was so brilliant.
1. Richard O'Brien was the perfect host
Whoever thought of picking Rocky Horror writer Richard O'Brien as host of this quirky game show is a TV genius. When picturing The Crystal Maze, O'Brien is most likely the first image that comes to mind; topped up to the nines with leopardskin fur coats and leather boots.

The debut series featured a host of celebrities, including Anthea Turner, Amy Childs, Sinitta, Kimberly Wyatt, Darren Gough, Melinda Messenger and winner Joe McElderry, who took part in different winter sports with the ultimate test being a live ski jump. Davina McCall and Alex Brooker hosted 'The Jump' - which averaged around 2.4 million viewers per episode when it aired in January and February - and Winter Olympic skier Graham...

Each year, devoted cinephiles around the world are treated to an array of filmic adaptations of popular novels, plays, or tales merely inspired by real events. It’s by no means a bad thing – but often an audience can crave an original, unique idea. Well it seems that the French are subverting the notion intriguingly, as following on from Roman Polanski’s Venus in Fur, which studied and explored Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s eponymous novel, comes Philippe Le Guay’s Cycling With Moliére. In this instance the source material is The Misanthrope, yet rather than merely adapt the play, instead the characters in the film sub-consciously reflect the characters within it, all while deconstructing the original text, in what is effectively an adaptation within an adaptation.
The picture tells the story of an actor named Gauthier Valence (Lambert Wilson), who travels to meet his old friend, and colleague, Serge Tanneaur...

'The Jump' star Melinda Messenger was worried other contestants would think her romance with instructor Warren Smith was ''unprofessional''. The 43-year-old TV personality struck up a relationship with the sportsman on the reality show last year and, although the pair wanted to be honest with the other competitors, they were worried about how their behaviour would come across. She explained: ''We did have that conversation of 'How's this going to go down? What if they think it's unprofessional?' We were both there to do a job after all.'' Warren agreed: ''I was very conscious that it might be awkward. There was...

Scarlett Johansson and Hayley Atwell sizzled on the bright blue carpet at the Captain America: The Winter Soldier premiere in London last night (March 20).
Johansson, reportedly five months pregnant with her first child with French fiancé Romain Dauriac, smouldered in a sexy red Vivienne Westwood dress featuring dramatic draping at the front.
The 29-year-old teamed the form-fitting number with a pair of leopard print Louboutins.
Meanwhile, 31-year-old Atwell arrived in a sheer grey embellished Julien Macdonald dress teamed with a pair of red patent stilettos.
They were joined by co-stars Chris Evans, who reprises his role as Captain America, and Samuel L Jackson, who stars as Nick Fury.
The Marvel movie sequel sees Evans's Captain America team up with Black Widow (Johansson) and Falcon (Anthony Mackie) to investigate a global conspiracy.
The film also features the return of both Cobie Smulders as Shield agent Maria Hill and Atwell as Peggy Carter.

The Jump has been praised by Channel 4's chief creative officer Jay Hunt.
Speaking to The Guardian, Hunt explained that she is keen to renew the celebrity winter sports show for a second series.
The show, hosted by Davina McCall and Alex Brooker, saw a number of famous faces taking part in games such as bobsleigh, skating and skiing, with Joe McElderry named the eventual winner.
The series - filmed in Austria - was plagued with injuries, as stars including Sir Steve Redgrave, Marcus Brigstocke, Melinda Messenger and Henry Conway were forced to pull out of the competition.
However, Hunt has now explained that she believes the show was "the first time [Channel 4 has] had a big pre-watershed hit for quite a long time".
"It's hard to think what is our pre-watershed tone of voice," she said. "There is a gravitational pull at [Channel] 4 towards the edgy, the difficult and the rude.

It's alright - we can all breathe a sigh of relief. The Jump is over, though sadly we cannot say that no celebrities were harmed in the making of this show. Because lots were. Lots and lots and lots.
When Digital Spy visited the set of Channel 4's luminary-lashing reality series just before Christmas - as the stars were in their first days of ski jump training - we made a joke on the plane about the broadcaster needing to have a lot of insurance. Looking back, that was either prescient or just in really bad taste.
Let's look at the numbers. Tara Palmer-Tomkinson pulled out before the show began, apparently because it "wasn't for her". That may have been one of the best decisions Tpt has ever made, ever, because shortly afterwards, and before one second had even aired on television, Sam Jones (Flash Gordon!) was forced to withdraw after injuring his shoulder.

Joe McElderry has won The Jump.
The singer beat Donal MacIntyre in the final jump of the series to be declared the winner of the Channel 4 winter sports show.
Both competitors - who joined the competition late as stand-ins for Henry Conway and Melinda Messenger - took on the medium-sized K24 jump.
However, McElderry opted to jump the K40 in the final round, while MacIntyre remained on the K24. McElderry recorded the greatest distance at 17.5 metres.
Earlier today, Sir Steve Redgrave and Marcus Brigstocke were forced to pull out of the competition due to injuries sustained in the ski cross event.
Redgrave decided to opt out of the final after an old injury caused him pain in today's training session.
Brigstocke "wiped out and injured his knee" after taking on the course's final jump, meaning he was unable to jump on tonight's show.

The Jump's Sir Steve Redgrave and Marcus Brigstocke have been forced to pull out of the show just hours before tonight's finale.
The duo both came a cropper after taking part in today's event, the dangerous ski cross, which sees competitors skiing down a course full of ramps and jumps.
Redgrave had already been injured earlier in the competition but a Channel 4 spokesperson explained that he was "cleared to take part in the event".
However, during his first practice run he fell while avoiding the final jump and - although he started to make his way back up for a second go - he decided it was "too much" and withdrew from the competition, giving an emotional exit interview.

I mean, I know that people can get injured skiing but I think I was focusing more on thinking of the show about skiing and then if things go wrong you have to jump. But I kind of put that to the back of my mind.

Childs and Sinitta will be joined by fellow female contestants Anthea Turner, Melinda Messenger, Kimberly Wyatt and Laura Hamilton - who stepped in when Tara Palmer-Tomkinson decided to quit the competition.
5ive's Ritchie Neville - who is a replacement for injured Flash Gordon star Sam Jones - is also in the photograph, along with Marcus Brigstocke, Nicky Clarke, Henry Conway, Darren Gough and Sir Steve Redgrave.
The Jump is expected to begin on Channel 4 on January 26.

The Jump has lost another contestant as Flash Gordon star Sam Jones has been forced to pull out of the show.
The Channel 4 competition - which sees various celebrities battling it out in winter sports and live ski jumps - has already seen Tara Palmer-Tomkinson decide to quit.
Jones has now been forced to exit after picking up a shoulder injury during training a few weeks ago, and has been replaced by 5ive's Ritchie Neville.
When Digital Spy visited the ski jump in Austria last month, Jones - who injured himself in an over-exuberant celebration after a successful jump - was wearing a sling and had to leave to go to a doctor's appointment.
Channel 4 has now confirmed to DS that Jones will not be competing, saying: "We had hoped that he would recover in time to still take part in the show but unfortunately he has had to...

Melinda Messenger admitted that she respects amputee Heather Mills for competing on ITV’s Dancing On Ice.
Speaking on Live From Studio Five, the former Doi contestant said: “I wasn’t particularly a fan of hers and I didn’t hate her either. But when I saw her skate, I had complete respect for the woman. She’s got guts, she’s completely brave to do something that is so technically difficult.
“It’s so hard, it’s one of the hardest things you can do because you have to balance so precisely, you have to move your ankle a certain way, so it’s beyond me how she’s actually physically able to do it.”
Messenger also hit out at those who suggested that Mills made it through to week two on the back of sympathy votes. She said: “I’ve got to disagree with that actually, because she did skate technically well.

To some visitors, perhaps the only vaguely magic thing in Swindon is the seven-island road junction beside the fire station, which is so baffling it has been branded the "magic roundabout". But that hasn't stopped Disney World in Florida selecting the Wiltshire town as the first twin town in its 38-year history.
The other parallels are equally hard to fathom – the Orlando theme park counts Mickey Mouse, Pluto and Snow White among it denizens, while Swindon boasts Melinda Messenger, Mark Lamarr and Billie Piper. But Disney executives today yesterday chose Swindon ahead of 24 other British towns, including Blackpool, which at least has a rollercoaster, and Brighton, which has a helter-skelter and a ghost train.
Perhaps tellingly, the Disney executives picked Swindon not by visiting, but by watching a video slideshow produced by resident Rebecca Warren, 20.
She managed to draw implausible but ingenious parallels between a local zoo and the Animal Kingdom section of Disney World,...
