Chicago – When the word “Opera” is defined today, the person that would illustrate the word is Renée Fleming. The lyric soprano has done most major female opera roles, and has written a new book … “Music and Mind: Harnessing the Arts for Health and Wellness” … and recently appeared at the Chicago Humanities Festival.
Renée Fleming has performed coloratura, lyric, and lighter spinto soprano operatic roles in Italian, German, French, Czech, and Russian, aside from her native English. A significant portion of her career has been the performance of new music, including world premieres of operas, concert pieces, and songs composed for her by André Previn, Caroline Shaw, Kevin Puts, Anders Hillborg, Nico Muhly, Henri Dutilleux, Brad Mehldau, and Wayne Shorter.

The 2023 Grammy Awards took place on Sunday, February 5 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.
Beyoncé led with the most nominations with nine in total while Kendrick Lamar received eight. Jay-Z earned five nominations, tying his wife, Beyoncé, for the most nominations in Grammys history at 88.
Beyoncé and the contemporary Christian music collective Maverick City Music each won the most awards with four trophies. Beyoncé’s four victories this year for Best Dance/Electronic Recording, Best Traditional R&b Performance, Best R&b Song and Best Dance/Electronic Music Album made her the artist with the most Grammy wins in history with 32.
However, Beyoncé failed to scoop up the night’s three major awards: Song of the Year (Bonnie Raitt‘s “Just Like That”), Record of the Year (Lizzo‘s “About Damn Time”) and Album of the Year (Harry Styles‘ Harry’s House).
Lizzo appeared visibly stunned by her win.

See the complete list of this year’s winners below:
Record of the Year
“Don’t Shut Me Down” — Abba
“Easy On Me” — Adele
“Break My Soul” — Beyoncé

The first batch of winners at the 2023 Grammy Awards has been announced! The show is far from over, and Beyoncé has already become the most-awarded artist in the Recording Academy's history. Other performers are also cleaning up with exciting wins. This year's main event is, once again, hosted by Trevor Noah - who served as the Mc in 2021 and 2022 - who, in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, teased that it'll be "the most star-studded room the Grammys has been for many, many years."
The 2023 Grammy nominee pool was stacked with heavy-hitting artists. On Nov. 15, the Recording Academy revealed the 2023 nominations across all 91 categories, some of which were presented by past Grammy winners like Olivia Rodrigo, John Legend, and Machine Gun Kelly.

Jazz is a web. Because of the genre’s inherently collaborative, often mix-and-match nature, singling out a supporting player we like on a given record might lead us to dozens of other sessions featuring that same artist in various contexts. Or we might pick up a certain current in the music that crops up elsewhere, unifying albums that seemed to have little else in common. In 2020, when connection of any kind was scarce, these sorts of musical hyperlinks seemed all the more precious, a way to map and marvel at...

Liam Gallagher is rarely at a loss for words, snide or otherwise. But during a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the singer was left momentarily speechless after being informed that “Wonderwall,” the monster 1995 ballad he sang with his old band, Oasis, is on its way to approaching 1 billion streams on Spotify.
“That’s pretty big, man,” Gallagher says, finally, as if it took a few seconds for the enormity of that figure to sink in. Then the old Liam, the one who loves to bash his songwriting brother, Noel, returns.

Pretty much every singer-songwriter who achieves any kind of success on their own eventually struggles with the same question: Keep things spare, or scale up, trying out a lusher sonic palette? Some who take the latter route stumble, but Elliott Smith soared. Figure 8 — the final album he released during his lifetime, which came out 20 years ago, on April 18th, 2000 — showed how the rich yet tasteful settings he crafted with co-producers Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf only highlighted the gemlike beauty of his songs.
But the idea of Smith as an indie-folk bard hung around.

The 40th edition of the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, which runs from July 6 to 15, featured a truly impressive range of music with approximately 100 venues hosting over 1400 performing acts. The citywide celebration relies on a loose consortium of independent promoters, producers, programmers, musicians and club owners to book an array of talent showcasing Danish artists, elder journeymen, new talent and international stars from the world over — all with a healthy respect for the history and traditions of jazz.
Marquee acts like Jeff Beck, The Roots, and the Brad Mehldau Trio all had big nights early in the festival, while saxophone icon Pharoah Sanders (pictured) took the stage for two sold-out shows at the intimate Brorson’s Church. Veteran drummer Albert “Tootie” Heath enjoyed the support of a decidedly international band, as did Boston saxophonists George Garzone and Jerry Bergonzi, both of whom have been coming to the festival for years, each playing...

New York’s Hudson River valley has a long history as a haven for artists either fleeing the exhausting grind of New York City or seeking to the area’s natural beauty. It’s where Bob Dylan retreated for an extended retreat following his (possibly exaggerated) motorcycle crash in 1966, it’s where Van Morrison conceived of Moondance, and it’s currently home to — among others — jazz musicians Jack DeJohnette (drums), John Scofield (guitar), John Medeski (keyboards, of Medeski, Martin and Wood) and Larry Grenadier (bass), who formed the newly-organized collective Hudson. People is pleased to premiere their version of Dylan’s “Lay Lady Lay,...

Happy birthday to Pat Metheny (born August 12, 1954), one of the few jazz superstars of the past four decades to combine commercial success and critical plaudits. After paying his dues in Gary Burton's band (which he joined at age 19), Metheny put out his first album in 1976 and by the time of his third release two years later was gaining crossover radio play. Though the style of his eponymous band was smooth and tuneful, Metheny had a firm basis in jazz and straight-ahead guitarist gods such as Jim Hall (with whom he eventually recorded a fine duo album).
With success came the challenge of avoiding complacency, which Metheny has met masterfully with a wide-ranging series of albums in a variety of stylistic bags, from atonal skronk to mellow Brazilian, from thorny Ornette Coleman covers to mercurial bebop. Along the way he has lent his prestige to both respected elders (Hall, Burton, Coleman,...

Lost performance footage of the late indie rocker Elliott Smith surfaced on YouTube Thursday, and fans will shed a tear listening to the crooner perform some of his most popular songs in this up-close-and-personal venue.
The VHS footage was uploaded to YouTube by director Paul Thomas Anderson, who had directed a VH1 pilot for the "The Jon Brion Show" in 2000, reports the Los Angeles Times. The show was never picked up by VH1.
To describe the video on YouTube, Anderson writes, "I tore up the floorboards at H.Q. the other day and came up with this little number on VHS. She holds up well. Love, Al."
She holds up very well indeed.
Both bashful and meticulous during the performance, Smith takes the time to ask if he can start a few songs over after he thinks he messed up the intro. For "Bottle Up And Explode," for instance, Smith...

"I tore up the floorboards at H.Q. the other day and came up with this little number on VHS. She holds up well." So reads the description for the video below from Al Rose Promotions, Paul Thomas Anderson's YouTube account. It's a slightly scatchy 2000 pilot for a VH1 series that was never made called "The Jon Brion Show," a musical variety show hosted by musician/producer Brion and directed by Anderson, featuring performances from the late, great singer-songwriter Elliott Smith and jazz pianist Brad Mehldau. Brion composed the scores for Anderson's "Punch-Drunk Love," "Magnolia" and "Hard Eight," but it's the footage of Smith, who committed suicide a decade ago, that makes the video so stunning. The songs performed include Smith's own "Son of Sam," "Independence Day," "Bottle Up and Explode," "Everything Means Nothing to Me" and "Happiness," along with...

As fans of Paul Thomas Anderson already know, the early part of his career found him in fruitful collaboration with producer/musician/genius Jon Brion, who scored the director's first four films. And while Brion is very well regarded as a producer (working with Fiona Apple, Kanye West, Of Montreal and many others), he's also earned great acclaim as a live musician, particularly through his concerts at famed venue Largo. Coupling an almost savant-like multi-instrumental ability with an encyclopedic knowledge of music history, Brion has dazzled many with his shows, and somebody thought his talents would be good for TV. That somebody was Paul Thomas Anderson. Right around 1999/2000 Anderson helmed a pilot for VH1 entitled "The Jon Brion Show" (natch), that was a test run at a variety show that would be led by Brion. They called in some musical guest favors with Elliot Smith and Brad Mehldau appearing (Brion...

What is there to say about Jon Brion that you don't already know (or should know)? A whipsmart songwriter, a dazzling musician (his live shows are legendary), an encyclopedia of music knowledge and history, and a producer extraordinaire who has worked with everyone from Kanye West to Brad Mehldau to Fiona Apple (his unreleased version of her Extraordinary Machine album is worth tracking down). But of course, movie fans know him best for his scoring gigs, memorably tuning up Paul Thomas Anderson's first four films, but he's also done far more mainstream gigs, leaning on comedies like "The Break-Up," "The Other Guys" and "Step Brothers." Well, Judd Apatow, who served as a producer on the latter film, is re-upping Brion for his next effort behind the camera. "This Is 40" will now have the talents of Brion, who has been brought on to score the film. It will be...

On the eve of Rotterdam's 40th film festival, film critic Agnès Poirier offers a guide to one of Europe's most eclectic and design-conscious cities
Rotterdam may not be your typical Dutch city with canals, cobblestone passages and grand 17th-century houses, but it is an ode to modernism and innovation worth a detour. Flattened by the Luftwaffe in the spring of 1940, the Netherlands' second city has been rebuilding and reinventing itself ever since and become a hotbed of architecture and design. The New York Times declared that "Rotterdam is increasingly to architecture what Paris is to fashion, or Los Angeles to entertainment". The city is littered with iconic structures, such as Rem Koolhaas's De Kunsthal museum, Ben van Erkel's Erasmus Bridge (nicknamed The Swan), Piet Blom's cube houses, and Jan Willem Neutelings and Michiel Riedijk's periscope-like Scheepvaart en Transport College, to name but a few. Yet the city manages to...

This Halloween week, the Big Music Machine offers up the scary and the sweet. The cast of "Glee" do the time warp, Sean Lennon goes acoustic, Bryan Ferry comes close to a Roxy Music reunion, Anne Sofie von Otter and Brad Mehldau fall in love, and Madlib's medicine show makes a stop at a '60s soul party. Play: "The Rocky Horror Glee Show" I'll admit that I wanted to hate this. "Glee" fatigue is setting in for me, and Tuesdays are starting to feel like karaoke night. But the '70s "Rocky Horror" stage play and film are the perfect "Glee" karaoke mix. Plus, it beats seeing them sucking lollipops in GQ magazine. Play: The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, "Acoustic Sessions" Sean Lennon and his model girlfriend Charlotte Kemp Muhl made their debut as a musical duo in 2008 at Radio City Hall....

There's a double helping of the Dane, Wall Street returns, Wallace and Gromit take up presenting – and Robyn goes for broke. Our critics pick this autumn's hottest shows

Hamlet
Prepare for the latest battle of the princes. John Simm is first in the field at the Sheffield Crucible; then Rory Kinnear enters the running in a Nicholas Hytner production for the National Theatre. It's not, of course, a contest – but comparisons will be inevitable. Crucible, Sheffield (0114-249 6000), from 16 September; and Olivier, London SE1 (020-7452 3000), from 7 October.
The Thrill of it All
Forced Entertainment continues the British experimental tradition with an evening of vaudevillian capers, Japanese lounge music and tarnished sequins. Nuffield, Lancaster (01524 594151), 12-13 October. Then touring.
Tribes
Nina Raine follows her impressive debut play, Rabbits, with a drama about an unconventional family that has its own private language and rules. At its centre is Billy, who is deaf and...

Rocker John Mayer thrilled fans at a sold-out concert on Sunday, August 22 after inviting jazz star Brad Mehldau onstage for a duet set. The singer took to his Twitter.com page last week and hinted that his concert at Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl would be extra special, teasing, "Planning something so beautiful for the Hollywood Bowl show... Stay tuned..."
And Mayer kept his promise - he and pianist Mehldau wowed the crowd with a collaborative set as the sun went down over the outdoor venue. The duo covered Jimi Hendrix's "The Wind Cries Mary", "Can't Find My Way Home" by Blind Faith, and Led Zeppelin's "Going to California", before transitioning into Mayer's own "Stop This Train".
They ended the set with a jazz rendition of The Verve's 1997 hit "Bitter Sweet Symphony".

The only slam dunks for me thus far this year are Titus Andronicus’ The Monitor and Anais Mitchell’s Hadestown, with probably a slight edge to Titus Andronicus because 1) they’re named after a Shakespeare play in which a dude’s hand gets chopped off, and 2) they have a “rock ’n roll saved my life” desperation that I still find, even in my becalmed dotage, utterly irresistible. Brad Mehldau’s Highway Rider gets my vote for Jazz Album of the Half Year, and the country category is a good ol’ boy split between Jamey Johnson’s The Guitar Song and Watermelon Slim’s The...

Highway Rider, the upcoming two-disc release from jazz pianist and composer Brad Mehldau, is not your everyday jazz. That much is clear from the first few seconds of a video of the Highway Rider recording sessions, when producer Jon Brion quips, “We gotta, in the words of Buddy Rich, sit down and play some fuckin’ music… Unless, of course, you’re standing.”...

The annual White House Tree Lighting is Thursday, Dec. 3 and "American Idol" season 6 winner Jordin Sparks will be on hand to sing.
Jordin is just one of several artists invited to the ceremony, which is traditionally when the President brings a message of peace to the nation before the giant White House Christmas tree is lit.
The tree itself is a Colorado blue spruce planted in 1978. It was 30 ft tall when planted and today is 46 years old and stands almost 42 ft tall. Just a little botanical info for you guys. We're a full-service blog here at Zap2it.
Besides Ms. Sparks, other performers joining in the festivities are Sheryl Crow, Common, Ray Lamontagne, Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau and Celtic Woman.
The ceremony will be streamed live on The National Tree official website starting at 5 pm/2 pm Et/Pt Dec. 3.
Hopefully we don't see any "Real Housewives" storming the stage. Though...

The stately side of the Crescent City
The funkiest man this side of Zigaboo Modeliste, Allen Toussaint is a one-man repository of New Orleans music, having produced or played with everyone from—oh, what’s the point? He’s worked with everyone. And now, at 71, he’s made a solo album as genteel as a Garden District mansion. It’s called The Bright Mississippi, and it does indeed shimmer. Toussaint leaves the producing to Joe Henry, freeing himself to play dignified piano and, on one track, sing. He also leads a crack band: Don Byron plays trilling clarinet on Sidney Bechet’s “Egyptian Fantasy,” Marc Ribot shreds an acoustic-guitar solo on Django Reinhardt’s “Blue Drag,” and Brad Mehldau tangles with Toussaint in a four-handed piano-only blues crawl called “Winin’ Boy Blues.” Like New Orleans itself, the album understands how to strut. But it also knows its manners. For all his funky pedigree,...
