It’s family first in The Baxters, Prime Video’s faith-driven drama based on the bestselling books from Karen Kingsbury. The first 10 episodes follow the determined Kari (Ali Cobrin), who tries to save her marriage after learning that her professor husband Tim (Black Lightning’s Brandon Hirsch) has been cheating on her with a student. In Kari’s corner are her loving parents—Elizabeth and John (Roma Downey and Ted McGinley)—and four siblings. Of course, Kari’s compassionate mom is her first call after her life falls apart. Downey was down for the drama, but the Baxters’ relatability drew in the Touched by an Angel vet. “Here is a series about a quintessential American churchgoing family dealing with real challenges and figuring out a way to come out stronger on the other side,” Downey, also an executive producer, says. “I know audiences will see themselves in this story.” Below,...

Exciting news for fans of The Diplomat!
The popular Netflix series starring Keri Russell as the US ambassador to the UK just announced that it's adding a major talent for its second season.
Producers revealed today that Alison Janney will be joining the cast in the role of Vice President Grace Penn.
Janney is no stranger to political drama, having starred in all seven seasons of NBC's The West Wing.
In more recent years, she starred on the CBS sitcom Mom and scored an Oscar nomination for her performance in I, Tonya.
The news that Netflix is willing to shell out to stack the Diplomat's roster shouldn't come as much of a surprise.
The streaming giant has been thirsting for a new prestige hit in the style of The Crown, and with its instant success among critics and audiences, The Diplomat might be the politically charged drama they've been waiting for.

Television series don't always end on their own terms. Some of the greatest shows in the medium's history have been canceled due to low ratings before they could finish telling their overarching story or just as they were hitting their stride creatively. Some of the most egregious examples of series getting the axe before their time include "My So-Called Life," "Arrested Development," "Frank's Place," "Sports Night," "I'll Fly Away," "Deadwood," and "Mindhunters." It's possible no one has had a more brutal small-screen run than Judd Apatow, who, before he became a hit-making film producer, watched helplessly as three superb, critically acclaimed comedies — "The Ben Stiller Show," "Freaks and Geeks" and "Undeclared" — failed to earn a second season.
Sometimes, fan enthusiasm results in these works getting revived in some incarnation or another, and, unfortunately, the results are often unsightly. But at least there's a reason for going back. The same isn't...

Harrison Ford surprised SAG-AFTRA members during a nomination committee Q&a this afternoon when he showed up to talk about his role on Apple TV+’s “Shrinking.”
Ford was keen to lavish praise on the cast of the comedy-drama television series, describing working with his co-stars as a uniquely different experience that rejuvenated his perspective on acting.
“There are people who improvise as though it was an exercise in egos. That never happens with this bunch. Work is really important to everybody that’s here,” said Ford.
“This mixture of comedy and pathos and really emotional stuff, it gives you a sense of responsibility for the things you’re communicating and how you’re communicating,” he continued. “I think that that shows up on screen, and it shows up in the work these people do every day and how they do it. We want movies to move us. We want them to soothe us, and carry us through bad times; we want them to make us laugh, make us feel connected to others, and show us beauty and splendor we've never seen before. And, sometimes, we want movies to truly, deeply disturb us.
Never mind why; maybe we're numb and want to be rattled into feeling, maybe we're feeling too much and want to channel it all somewhere, or maybe we just want to believe the world is still capable of bowling us over despite of our defenses. Whatever the case, we all sometimes take to a movie specifically because of one particular moment in it that makes us feel horrible.
Conversely, we sometimes don't want movies to disturb us, and yet they do — when we're least expecting them to, or when we're making an earnest effort to meet them halfway, they...

The first season of Shrinking ends with a literal cliff-hanger. One of Jimmy’s (Jason Segel) patients takes his unconventional therapeutic advice to the extreme and pushes her abusive husband over the edge of a Los Angeles mountain, right as the credits roll. Segel and his co-creators Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein had the idea for what Lawrence calls the “pulling-out-the-rug moment” before they even sat down to write the pilot, so when they gathered with their cast for a THR Presents panel, powered by Vision Media, the explosively wacky ending was on everyone’s minds.
“I was so shocked and I was glad it wasn’t me,” joked Ted McGinley, who plays Derek on the Apple TV+ show, while Luke Tennie (Sean) quipped, “It made my wife very nervous.”

This story about the casting of “Shrinking” first appeared in the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Say you’re casting a thoughtful comedy about the world of psychotherapists, and you need a seasoned veteran to support the sharp young cast in a potentially scene-stealing mentor role. And then you land one of the biggest movie stars in the world, an icon who has been in two of the largest movie franchises in the last 50 years.
This was the reality for “Shrinking” casting directors Debby Romano and Brett Benner when the AppleTV+ comedy was being put together. It still seems surreal to them that they landed Harrison Ford for the pivotal supporting role of Paul, a senior member of the practice where Jason Segel and Jessica Williams’ characters work as therapists.

Sometimes it's almost hard to recall that the late Paul Walker had a career outside of the "Fast & Furious" films. Before he became a cornerstone of one of the most successful franchises in Hollywood history, Walker was cutting his teeth the way any young, ludicrously handsome actor just breaking into the movie business does: in teen movies like "She's All That" and "Varsity Blues."
It was actually in "Varsity Blues" where a lot of people first really got to know Walker as an actor, especially since he was playing something of an antithesis of the stereotypical blonde haired, blue-eyed, All-American kid who happens to be a star high school quarterback in Texas. Usually, the pretty boy quarterbacks are played as total jerks, but in "Varsity Blues," Walker's character, Lance Harbor, is actually a nice guy who sees a promising playing career cut short due to a catastrophic injury. But...

Seth MacFarlane is reviving the age old rivalry between jocks and nerds. The comedic actor is developing a reboot of the seminal ’80s comedy “Revenge of the Nerds” at 20th Century Studios.
Keith and Kenny Lucas, identical twin brothers best known for their scene-stealing roles in “22 Jump Street,” are set to write and star in the film. They are co-writing the script with Alex Rubens. MacFarlane will produce the reboot through his production company Fuzzy Door, along with Erica Huggins, who brought the project to the Lucas brothers and is spearheading development.
The upcoming version won’t be a remake of the 1984 comedy, which hasn’t aged all that well and has been criticized in recent years for depictions of rape. Instead, the contemporary reimagining will pontificate about today’s nerd culture and what even constitutes a geek in the 21st century.

Picture going through your Netflix and finding out “Seinfeld” went on without Jerry, “Cheers” without Sam Malone or even that the ongoing “Riverdale” marched on without Archie Andrews. Could you believe it? Would you still watch?
So far in 2018, three award-winning TV shows have continued on without a main character. One was planned (Andrew Lincoln on “The Walking Dead”). The other two, not so much The trend continues in 2019. “Transparent” Season 5 will be sans Jeffrey Tambor, who exited after he was accused of sexual harassment (Tambor has denied the accusations).
A show’s lifeline after a major character exits is never certain. But by looking at how that quandary has been met by shows in the past, maybe a little insight can be gained about how it can be handled in the future.

Well, it’s about time. For the last twenty-five years or so, we’ve had one animated Batman series after another but to be honest only two are really good: Batman the Animated Series and Batman: The Brave and the Bold. The latter has been slowly coming out on Blu-Ray with season one in 2013 and season two in 2015. This month, we’re getting the third and final season and the good news is that it is as entertaining as remembered.

"Hey, what other old shows could we bring back?"
That's a question being asked all over Hollywood, now that Fuller House worked America up into a nostalgia frenzy. A little credit is due to the Disney Channel's Girl Meets World, which proved that these old shows could benefit from being bumped into the modern era and given a new generation of kids who need to learn life lessons. It's well into its reboot season, but right now Fuller House is the revival show that's generated buzz, press and more than a few conversations about pop culture nostalgia.

This week's Castle takes its name from a 90s Arnie action spoof, but does it deliver on that meta promise? Here's Laura's review...
This review contains spoilers.
7.9 Last Action Hero
Sometimes, the hardest thing about reviewing something is overcoming the expectations that you take in with you. In some cases, this is purely a result of the individual makeup of the reviewer. In others, it’s because the producers created those expectations. For me, this week, with Castle, it’s both. And that’s because a) the writers chose to title last week’s episode Last Action Hero, and b) I may be the only critic alive to have really enjoyed the 1993 John McTiernan film of the same name, starring/spoofing Arnold Schwarzenegger.
What sold me on the movie, aside from Charles Dance as a dastardly villain and its metanarrative, was its satire. As an action-movie fan who is also...

This week on ABC’s Castle, Rick got a blast from his 1980s past when a murder investigation introduced him to a bevy of action-movie idols. Meanwhile, Kate said a bittersweet goodbye — to her apartment.
If you’ve followed my recaps over the eons, you know that I occasionally enter an episode with tempered expectations — think Season 5’s Ring riff, for one — only to come away pleasantly surprised. This was one of those instances.
Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Expendables (or Indestructibles, as the case may be), and I tuned in mainly to see how hammy...

“Excuse please, but why do they call you ‘booger’?”
Thanks to films like Revenge Of The Nerds, it is becoming clear that we, the nerds of this world, are here to stay and to conquer. Ok, so I don’t wear my pants up to my chest. Or use my hair full of gel. Or have that characteristic “snort” in my laugh. Still, I am a nerd. Actually, I’m a Geek, which is a sub-set of nerds, and I know I’ll always be one. It’s just that it was so uncool to be one back in the 1980’s. People used to bother us, kick us, insult us, hit us. They took our stuff away, hid it, or simply threw it in the trash. And then, Revenge Of The Nerds came along and showed us that, indeed, we are nerds, but that we must not accept a punishment for it.
