While many may scoff when I say this, let me just go ahead and admit right here that I unabashedly love the Underworld movies, a series I once referred to as the “Lord of the Rings of Werewolf Movies.” The first Underworld came along right at the perfect time for me. I was still super into horror action cinema at the time (coming off films like Blade and The Matrix, whose influences were being felt industry-wide), and I just couldn’t think of anything cooler than watching werewolves and vampires kicking each other’s respective otherworldly asses.
Other than the films’ tendencies to sometimes take themselves just a little too seriously, I've always felt like the Underworld movies have unjustly received a bad wrap within the horror community and deserve far more love and respect than they ever get. From their commitment to creating intricate character-driven storytelling that has taken us through (now) five films,...

1.) In what must be a dream scenario for director Stephen Gaghan (Syriana), Brad Pitt and Denzel Washington are circling the two lead roles in his next project. The Lionsgate crime thriller Candy Store is said to feature meaty roles for its two main characters. It follows a deep-cover operative who aims to start a new life as a Brooklyn beat cop, only to discover the global organization he was dedicated to fighting is also operating in his new backyard. Jamie Foxx is also said to be interested in one of the roles. [THR] 2.) The cast is starting to roll in for director James Franco's adaptation of William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying. The ensemble includes Danny McBride, Tim Blake Nelson, Logan Marshall-Green (Prometheus), Jim Parrack ("True Blood") and Ahna O'Reilly (The Help). I like dark, sci-fi actioners and I’m unafraid to admit it. I’ve seen every Underworld and Resident Evil in the theatre and anticipate continuing that trend until their respective series die. My interest in each comes from different motivations, though. No matter how cheesy and overly-stylish the vampire-versus-lycan war gets, it retains its intriguing mythology as a backbone to the carnage. On the flip side, Alice’s adventures against Umbrella ratchet up the aggression for non-stop fight choreography deflecting from the fact all four films have the same basic plot of surveying a post-apocalyptic zombie-infested wasteland. So, upon standing at the end credits of Kate Beckinsale‘s return as Selene in Underworld: Awakening, I scratched my head wondering when the two franchises swapped ambitions.
The list of credited screenwriters reveals Len Wiseman‘s consistent inclusion throughout the quartet as secondary to the glaring absence of Danny McBride here.

Selene wakes up in a laboratory tank some twelve years later, still dressed in her same black leather outfit (ewww). Hot vampire chicks, leather-clad with guns blazing. That’s the appeal of Underworld, yes? It certainly doesn’t hurt, that’s for sure. And while the ever-expanding franchise blasts its way into theaters with a fourth entry this weekend, I’d argue there’s more to these things than sexy British chicks wielding all kinds of deadly weapons.
Taking a look back at the three films preceding Underworld Awakening, we find a flawed but ambitious series centering on an enduring war between vampires and werewolves. There have been missteps along the way: leaden direction, questionable writing and horrible performances, but the sheer scope of the franchise continues to impress. Underworld may not be a work of blazing originality, but it’s an ongoing R-rated action fantasy worth a bit more than its detractors might suggest.

The Underworld franchise, which began in 2003, is coming up on the release of its fourth chapter, Underworld Awakening, on January 20.
The franchise has garnered die-hard fanatics over the last nine years with Kate Beckinsale – as the svelte, ass-kicking Selene - being not just the masturbatory fantasy of many a teenage boy, but a powerful female symbol as well. Each installment in the series is visually striking and unapologetically violent, reminiscent of a graphic novel come to life. The camerawork, lighting and production design give each entry a baroque and blue effect that has given the franchise a visual signature.
The Underworld films also embrace their R-rating wholeheartedly and are box office successes in spite of their rating. It’s all too often that contemporary horror films are watered down to appeal to the masses. Filmmakers are regularly sacrificing substance to get people in seats. It’s obvious that the creators...

"Ghost Trek" can best be described as "Reno 911" meets "Ghost Hunters", and the show's gang of misfits are out to prove that they're the funniest bunch of paranormal researchers since Peter Venkman, Raymond Stantz and Egon Spengler. Those of you lucky enough to be in the Louisville area of the Bluegrass State on Saturday, July 23rd, will get your chance to have a sneak peek at the pilot!
With a tagline that basically sums up the series ("Ghost Trek": Paranormal research with an emphasis on bad taste), the Paranormal Underworld Detective Society (that's right, Puds) is portrayed by an incredibly eclectic group of individuals. Actors, reality stars and former professional wrestlers are among the cast members, each bringing their own unique talent to the program.

Little Miss Sunshine became a rare indie to mainstream crossover hit, and directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris haven't made another feature film since. Now they're set to finally move forward on another picture, called He Loves Me. And the movie is shaping up to be a full-fledged Lms reunion. The La Times [1] reveals that He Loves Me is written by Zoe Kazan, the real-life girlfriend of Little Miss Sunshine actor Paul Dano. Both will appear in He Loves Me, which is being produced by Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa, who also produced (you guessed it) Little Miss Sunshine. The film is about "a young novelist who achieves success early in his career but begins to face struggles. In a bid to overcome writer's block, he is told to write the woman he thinks will love him. He winds up willing her into existence." The Lat says "think Adaptation meets Weird Science.

Chicago – “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans” is easily one of the weirdest movies of 2009. It’s a werewolf movie that plays like a variation on “Gladiator” or “Spartacus” with the foundation of “Romeo & Juliet”. Solid work by the excellent Michael Sheen nearly redeems the film but an awful screenplay, dull design, and plodding direction sink this bizarre prequel.

There’s a stolid integrity to the Underworld movies, the goth-action series about a blood war between werewolves and vampires. Inspired as much by video games as by vampire-werewolf lore, the movies, starting in 2003, are in many ways the opposite of their contemporaries—solemn, serious-minded and insistently plot driven, to the point that it’s often difficult to sort through the rambling excess.

The players: Director: Patrick Tatopoulos, Writers: Howard McCain, Dirk Blackman, Danny McBride, Cast: Michael Sheen, Bill Nighy, Rhona Mitra, Shane Brolly, Kevin Grevioux
Facts of interest: Patrick Tatopoulos did the creature design in all three films.
The plot: The film explores the origins of the battle between the Lycans and Death Dealers.
Our thoughts: It’s about time to close the gates to this underworld for good. Patrick Tatopoulos’s prequel “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans” is not exactly a monstrosity, but the third installment in the series that kicked off with “Underworld” in 2003 fails to offer us anything we haven’t already seen in the predecessors.

As a prequel to the previous two films in its trilogy, Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans doesn’t so much answer burning questions they posed as dramatize backstory that has only been spoken of before. And it raises a few queries of its own.
To wit, what exactly are the rules of werewolf transformation? There are a number of meaningful shots of the full moon, but it generally seems that the Lycans can assume beastly form whenever they please. The vampires (a.k.a. Death Dealers) who rule the medieval-ish land in which Rise is set keep the captive, enslaved Lycans from assuming hair and fangs with special collars—and yet hero Lucian (Michael Sheen) doesn’t go monstrous at certain points late in the film when it might be advantageous to do so, even though he doesn’t have a collar on.
Best not to ponder details like this...

“Digital effects and animatronics are completely different,” says three-time Underworld producer Richard Wright on the set of Rise Of The Lycans, stating the obvious before continuing, “But sometimes they’re kind of melded together. In this film, we have basically three types of effects.
“We have the on-set gags like wirework—and there is a ton of that—as well as animatronics and special makeup,” Wright continues. “The director, Patrick Tatopoulos, has an effects company and started in the business doing makeup and animatronics, so there is a natural confluence. He has been involved in the first two UNDERWORLDs and was actually the production designer of the second film—a real Renaissance man. We’ve done a ton of animatronic effects on this film, and then we have the computer work, which comes last in this whole process.

Literally days before "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" opens wide in the U.S., a brand new clip from the "Underworld" series' prequel has been let out. Courtesy of MSN, the snippet is entitled "How Dare You" and displays one of the fighting sequences.
The clip begins with a footage where Sonja is turning her back against her own race and battles the Death Dealers in the midst of heavy rain. After she slashes two of the vampires, she faces her infuriated father, Viktor, who directly slapped her and screamed "How dare you raise your hand to me?" The argument between father and daughter then continues with a sword fight between the two.

The first full trailer of "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" has been uncovered. Focusing on introducing the two unlikely lovers, privileged-born vampire Sonja and slave-born lycan Lucian, and what they are capable of, the video traces the background story behind the centuries-old blood feud between the aristocratic vampires, Death Dealers, and their onetime slaves, the Lycans.
Opened with a scene where vampire elder Viktor praises his daughter, Sonja, as the fiercest warrior he has ever seen, the trailer displays Sonja and Lucian breaking all the rules by becoming lovers. Then, it moves on to the time when Lucian is fed up of being slave and rallies his fellow lycans to rise up against their enslavers and thus, the second half of the trailer shows mostly the battle between the vampires and the lycans.

Despite a lot of excitement today stemming from mostly unsubstantiated claims about the futures of Batman and Captain America, there is another big film franchise with a more legitimate update: Ghostbusters.
Last week, it was speculated that maybe Judd Apatow or Seth Rogen or both were working on a script to the threequel, when Dan Aykroyd made a comment in an interview. The script is being written (or re-written) by Gene Stupnisky and Lee Eisenberg, whose work on The Office is pretty damn good.
Harold Ramis, one of the original Ghostbusters and the de facto director of this new installment, e-mailed The Chicago Tribune to clear some things up.

Underworld will rise again to the light of day, as Variety reports that director Len Wiseman and his co-writer Danny McBride have signed a deal with Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment to turn the vampires vs. werewolves flick into a trilogy. Wiseman will once again direct, and Screen Gems hopes to put the first sequel into production as soon as possible; star Kate Beckinsale, who is engaged to Wiseman, has expressed interest in returning to her role of Selene, vampiric "death dealer." The Underworld films would be Screen Gems' second foray into female-centric franchise action, as the company also had Resident Evil II, starring Milla Jovovich, under its belt.
