‘Emily the Criminal’ star Aubrey Plaza has opened up about “weirding out” Robert De Niro when the two worked together in 2016’s ‘Dirty Grandpa’.
Reflecting on her working relationship with the ‘Raging Bull’ actor (the two actors played lovers in Dan Mazer’s gross-out comedy), Plaza clarified that any way De Niro could have been offended by her behaviour would have been due to her staying committed to her character, reports ‘Variety’.
“I didn’t really have a relationship with him off camera because he’s him,” Plaza said, quoted by ‘Variety’, when asked about how well she and De Niro knew each other. “I didn’t have time to get to know him, he shows up in a puff of smoke and there’s no chatting at the water cooler.”

The Simpsons veteran Tim Long has been tapped to co-write and showrun Bloom County, an animated series based on Berkeley Breathed’s 1980s comic strip, which has been in development at Fox.

"Big Jim", a live-action film adaptation to be produced by Mattel Films and directed by Dan Mazer, adapts Mattel's "Big Jim" line of action figure toys produced from 1972 through 1986, 'inspired' by Hasbro's "G.I. Joe", involved in spy situations, space exploration and a whole lot more:

Can they put the mask back on?
Deadline reported that Rudy Giuliani was unveiled as a contestant on “The Masked Singer.” The season seven reveal during the Fox primetime singing competition, which hasn’t yet aired, allegedly led to judges Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke leaving the stage in protest.
Fellow judges Jenny McCarthy and Nicole Scherzinger remained on set and “bantered” with Giuliani, per Deadline.
Variety reported that Fox “refuses to acknowledge leaks, maintaining the series’ policy against confirming ‘spoilers.'”
Giuliani’s episode will not air until March, with the theme of “The Good, The Bad, and the Cuddly.” However, the politician’s rumored appearance is already causing social media backlash.
“When will Mike Flynn be on ‘The Masked Singer’ again?” journalist Molly Jong-Fast tweeted.
One fan commented, “How you gonna go on the Masked Singer as an anti-masker?”

Mattel Films executive V.P. Robbie Brenner has not one but two Magic 8 Balls in her office. As a mom, she’s always been partial to Barbie but admits the small black plastic orbs have a strange hold on her.
“To this day, I still shake it and think somehow it’s going to tell me what’s going to happen,” says Brenner, “and usually, I get a ‘Try again later.’”
But the producer of Oscar nominee “Dallas Buyers Club” and this year’s Sundance player “Call Jane” is not waiting around to make her moves at Mattel, the 77-year-old toy manufacturer with some of the most iconic and recognizable brands in stores. Three years ago, Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz tapped Brenner to help transform the company into a content powerhouse. Since then, she has put more than a dozen feature films in motion, all using her connections and pedigree as an artist-first executive.

With the introduction of Disney+ and therefore the need for new shows and movies it is no surprise at all that the most well known of Christmas movies got a sequel on the streaming platform. The original Home Alone (and that first sequel) is one of my favourite movies ever and any modern day sequel was going to have a tough time being anywhere near as good as the first two films. That said, with a talented cast, I was looking forward to seeing how Home Sweet Home Alone turned out.
Apart from a child being left home alone, the story is changed up a little bit. This time, the crooks aren’t really crooks but a married couple...

The latest entry into the beloved “Home Alone” franchise hails from a stacked roster of comedy veterans.
“Borat” and “Bridget Jones’ Baby” co-writer Dan Mazer directs the film from a screenplay by Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell of “Saturday Night Live” (and of Variety’s list of 10 Screenwriters to Watch in 2021). The cast includes Ellie Kemper, Rob Delaney and Kenan Thompson. But in “Home Sweet Home Alone,” those comedians and their decades of experience stand in service of something greater.
That is, of course, the budding stardom of Archie Yates, the 12-year-old from Kent, England who made his film debut in 2019 via Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit.” He stole the screen as Jojo’s [Roman Griffin Davis] goofy and blunt best friend Yorki, then did it again during the film’s awards campaign, winning hearts and going viral online for his red carpet appearances.

Borat co-writer Dan Mazer and a comically adept cast including Ellie Kemper, Kenan Thompson and Rob Delaney, make for a diverting enough retread
The wildly unorthodox set-up of 1990 Christmas staple Home Alone – parents so consumed with making a flight on time that they would somehow leave their bloodthirsty eight-year-old son behind – was at odds with its shock success, a hit so big (its $476m gross would now be around $1bn with inflation) that a sequel was therefore inevitable rather than in any way logical. So Home Alone 2 soon followed, a film that imagined even more unforgivable parental negligence, and then somehow a franchise too, with three more overcalculated misadventures on top, the genuine festive sparkle of the original fading into dusk.
The prospect of yet another one, this time with some vague same universe ties to the first, has created more ire than these things usually do since the trailer dropped last month,...

Over the course of more than 30 years and five films, the “Home Alone” franchise has mostly failed to recapture the magic and charm of Chris Columbus’ 1990 original, and the latest entry into this seemingly bomb-proof franchise — the awkwardly titled “Home Sweet Home Alone” — continues that pattern, even with plenty of good intentions. Dan Mazer’s film is the closest yet the series has come to a true remake, focusing on one plucky kid, two crazed robbers, and a Christmastime backdrop engineered to make anyone feel warm and fuzzy, but
Most of that weirdness is baked right into the film’s basic premise, which dares to ask: What if our plucky kid was kind of a jerk? And what if our crazed robbers actually had a good reason for committing crimes? And what if this family-friendly comedy included jokes about O.J. Simpson’s checkered past? What follows is an uneven mishmash,...

“Home Sweet Home Alone” takes everything audiences loved about the Chris Columbus-directed, John Hughes-penned original and turns it around on them. Holiday sentimentality co-mingling with slapstick violence hits differently when the filmmakers not only swap the roles of the empathetic protagonist and dastardly antagonists, but also take a both-sides approach to rooting interest. While this might seem like an ingenious way to reinvigorate a long-run-into-the-ground franchise where a child faces off against bumbling burglars, this Disney Plus offering maddeningly fails to lean into the aspects it so desperately and ambitiously seeks to change. Mean-spirited, downright sloppy and awkwardly unfunny, this rote feature reboot lacks holiday cheer.

"You really think I'm that stupid?" 20th Century Studios has unveiled an official trailer for a new reboot of Home Alone titled officially Home Sweet Home Alone. This is sort of a remake, but not really, described as a "reimagining of the beloved holiday film franchise." Ugh. A married couple tries to steal back a valuable heirloom from a troublesome kid who just so happens to be home alone while his family is away on a trip. Archie Yates (from Jojo Rabbit and on "Wolfboy and the Everything Factory") stars as Max, with a cast including Ellie Kemper, Rob Delaney, Aisling Bea, Kenan Thompson, Tim Simons, Pete Holmes, Devin Ratray, Ally Maki, and Chris Parnell. No surprise, this looks awful. They took the original Home Alone, which is indeed a classic, and just made it dumber in every single way. Why?! This just ain't worth it. Here's the official trailer...

Nine months after the film’s release in the fall of 2020, “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” is still generating discussion for its dark portrayal of right-wing America, with Sacha Baron Cohen using his typical bait-and-switch tactics. The Daily Beast recently sat down with Baron Cohen’s creative partner Dan Mazer, a co-writer on the original film and sequel and one of the creators behind the Ali G character, to talk about their collaborations. Of course, the topic of “Borat 2” came up, and inevitably the conversation turned to an infamous scene near the film’s end where former New York mayor and Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani winds up in a compromising position in a hotel room with star Maria Bakalova posing as an underage broadcast journalist.
Giuliani has claimed he was merely tucking in his shirt during a moment that finds him lying on his back in the hotel room in front of Bakalova,...

"I know he isn't what you expected... give it time, relationships can be tricky though." Quiver Distribution has released the first trailer for an indie comedy titled The Exchange, set in the 80s in Quebec. This hasn't premiered at any fests, but is opening this July anyway. A socially awkward boy convinces his family to take an exchange student but it doesn't turn out as planned. Hoping to find friendship with this "mail-order best friend" from France, he discovers that the student, named Stéphane, is not as sophisticated and cultured as he assumed. Starring Ed Oxenbould as Tim, Avan Jogia as Stéphane, with Justin Hartley, Jennifer Irwin, Paul Braunstein, Jayli Wolf, and David Huband. This actually looks way better than it sounds, another of the awkwardly hilarious indie comedies that used to play at SXSW & Sundance. It's worth a look. Here's the first official trailer for Dan Mazer's The Exchange,...

Quiver Distribution has acquired U.S. rights to “The Exchange,” a new comedy from the co-creator of “Borat” and “Bruno.”
Directed by Dan Mazer, an Oscar nominee for writing the “Borat” movies and the maker of “Dirty Grandpa,” the film follows a socially awkward but highly enterprising teenager who decides to acquire a “mail-order best friend.” While he hopes to find a sophisticated exchange student from France, he instead ends up importing his personal nightmare, a cologne-soaked, chain-smoking, sex-crazed guy, who quickly becomes a community hero. The movie stars Justin Hartley (“This Is Us”), Avan Jogia (“Zombieland: Double Tap”), Jennifer Irwin (“Bad Teacher”) and Ed Oxenbould (“Wildlife”). Emmy Award-winner Tim Long (“The Simpsons”) penned the script.
Financial terms of the sale were not disclosed.
“Dan, Tim and the entire cast have created a laugh-out-loud comedy that audiences will unquestionably go crazy for,” said Quiver Distribution Co-Presidents Berry Meyerowitz and Jeff Sackman.

It has been another strange and uncertain year for Hollywood, with the pandemic hitting cinemas hard and streaming services rising to hold the fort. It has also been a year in which we’ve seen a growing diversity in front of, and behind the camera, with an increasing focus on new voices and new stories being told.
Last year saw Bong Joon-ho ‘s Parasite achieve Oscar greatness and, for a brief pre-covid moment, it seemed that the world of cinema was beginning to embrace a wider world. The 2021 BAFTAs showed signs this was continuing with Minari, Another Round and Promising Young Woman taking home a clutch of awards each.
This year’s American Academy Awards will be a strange affair, certainly one to remember.
Here is the full list of nominations with Winners in bold.

“Mank” is the only film in contention at the 2021 Oscars to break the double digit barrier in the nominations count. This Netflix period picture reaped a leading 10 bids. In a six-way tied for second place with, appropriately enough, six nominations apiece are “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” All seven of these films are up for Best Picture. That race is rounded out by five-time contender “Promising Young Woman.”

Since the first ceremony, Oscar voters have honored the importance of the first step in the filmmaking process by awarding screenwriters on an annual basis. The Best Adapted Screenplay award is given in recognition of each year’s most outstanding script derived from an existing work. Academy rules allow for a variety of source materials, including fiction and nonfiction books, plays, and even previous short and feature films.
The films in contention for the 2021 Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar are “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “The Father,” “Nomadland,” “One Night in Miami,” and “The White Tiger.” Our odds currently indicate that “Nomadland” (82/25) will win the award, followed in order by “The Father” (37/10), “One Night in Miami” (9/2), “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” (9/2), and “The White Tiger” (9/2).
In adapting his play “The Father” from stage to screen, Florian Zeller teamed with Christopher Hampton, who previously won this award in 1989 for “Dangerous Liaisons.” Hampton is now one of...

Oscar nominee profile: Adapted Screenplay ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’ was faced with the unexpected
Sing out their names: Sacha Baron Cohen, Peter Baynham, Jena Friedman, Anthony Hines, Lee Kern, Dan Mazer, Erica Rivinoja, Dan Swimer and Nina Pedrad. These are the record nine writers who have been nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for their contributions to “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” the same team that won the Writers Guild Award for Adapted Screenplay several weeks ago.
As impressive as that WGA win was, it comes with a slight caveat for Oscar prognosticators. Yes, “Borat’s” WGA victory was over two of its Oscar rivals in this category — Kemp Powers for adapting his stage play “One Night in Miami,” and Ramin Bahrani for adapting the novel “The White Tiger.” But two other huge competitors — Chloè Zhao for her adaptation of the non-fiction book “Nomadland,” and Christopher Hampton and Florian Zeller for adapting Zeller’s play “The Father” — were not eligible for the WGA prize but will return...

Another guild award is in the books, ladies and gentlemen. The Writers Guild Awards are in the rearview mirror now, with some definite Oscar implications. For one thing, it does really now seem like Emerald Fennell is headed towards an Academy Award for her Promising Young Woman screenplay. In one of the shortest WGA Award ceremonies in recent memory at 90 minutes, there were a few standout comedic moments, one being when Borat Subsequent Moviefilm actor/producer/co-scribe and Adapted Screenplay WGA winner Sacha Baron Cohen took a jab at his favorite punching bag in the sequel, Donald Trump consigliere Rudy Giuliani.
“Thank you for this incredible award, though I can’t help thinking we won it because 60% of the Writers Guild worked on this movie,” said Baron Cohen in a pre-taped ceremony tonight.
“A film like this is extremely hard to write, partly because it stars real people whose behavior is completely unpredictable — apart from Rudy Giuliani who did everything we hoped for,” the British comedic creator said, hitting the nail on the head.

“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and “Promising Young Woman” were named the best adapted original screenplays of 2021 at the Writers Guild Awards, which took place in a virtual ceremony on Sunday.
While “Promising Young Woman” went into the show with a slight edge over “The Trial of the Chicago 7’ for the original-screenplay award,”Borat” was a decided dark horse in the adapted-screenplay category, whose nominees also included “One Night in Miami,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “News of the World’ and “The White Tiger.”
Writers Guild winners in the screenplay categories go on to win Oscars almost two-thirds of the time, although the two awards sometimes differ because the WGA is an award strictly for screenplays for movies that were made under the terms of the guild’s Minimum Basic Agreement, or similar agreements from a number of international guilds.

As IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson has noted, the WGA’s film nominees are less predictive than an indication of what’s losing and gaining heat, from the missing early 2020 releases “I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” “The King of Staten Island,” and “Da 5 Bloods,” to such surging movies as “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Sound of Metal,” and “Promising Young Woman,” all of which recently earned Best Picture nods from the Academy.

The Writers Guild of America Awards were handed during a virtual ceremony on Sunday, March 21. But don’t base your Oscar predictions on these kudos. Every year a slew of Oscar-nominated scripts are deemed ineligible for consideration here due to guild guidelines. Indeed, over the past 12 years only 80 of the Writers Guild of America Awards nominees have numbered among the 120 screenplays that reaped Academy Awards bids. Scroll down for the 2021 Writers Guild of America Awards winners list.
Our odds predict that “Nomadland” will win Best Adapted Screenplay winner at the Oscars but it was not allowed to compete at the WGA Awards. Neither was another Oscar contender in that category: “The Father.” The guild did match the academy three-for-five in this category, with “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “One Night in Miami” and “The White Tiger” competing at both. “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “News of the World” round out the guild nominees.

Amazon’s “One Night in Miami” is in the lead to win Best Adapted Screenplay at Sunday’s Writers Guild of America Awards, according to Gold Derby odds. Kemp Powers wrote the film based on his acclaimed play that tells of a fictional evening between Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown and Sam Cooke. While Ruben Santiago-Hudson‘s adaptation of the August Wilson play “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” sits in second place in our WGA odds, it’s fallen slightly since that Oscar snub. Meanwhile, third-place contender “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” is on the rise at the guild, buoyed by a pair of Oscar bids for Sacha Baron Cohen (adapted screenplay) and Maria Bakalova (supporting actress).
