The top 20. The scripts by which all others are defined and to which all others are compared. Brilliant scripts can be wordy. Brilliant scripts can be confusing. Brilliant scripts can be sweeping or intimate. This section runs the gamut, ranging from first time writers to established writing vets. It only gets better from here.

20. Easy Rider (1969)
Written by Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda, and Terry Southern
They’ll talk to ya and talk to ya and talk to ya about individual freedom. But they see a free individual, it’s gonna scare ‘em.
This portion’s “anybody can write a film” segment comes from 1969, with a landmark film that truly doesn’t have much weight. A road movie if there ever was one, Easy Rider follows Wyatt (Peter Fonda) and Billy (Dennis Hopper) as they ride their motorcycles across the country to New Orleans for Mardi Gras.

Fakery is so ingrained in pop culture that we're suspicious of anything claiming the truth. So we question the authenticity of what happens in Catfish
Almost any story is almost certainly some kind of lie," says Orson Welles in F for Fake. That goes double for soi-disant documentaries that test the viewer's credulity. Exit Through the Gift Shop, I'm Still Here and Catfish leave you wondering who is fooling whom. Unless the film-makers fess up, it's hard to spot where fact ends and fiction begins, but the debate generates column inches, which is gold dust for a film without a big marketing budget.
Such documentaries are playing on a long tradition of juggling degrees of truth, or weighting it for propaganda purposes. Robert Flaherty was retrospectively criticised for having faked elements of Nanook of the North (Nanook's two "wives", for example, were played by the film-maker's own girlfriends), but...

Cinema audiences want to be fooled. Our desire for a juicy twist is surely related to our pleasure in a magician's sleight of hand
Martin Scorsese's latest film has a twist ending. That's all I'm going to write about Shutter Island, because I try to avoid spoilers of recent releases. But I reckon older films are fair game, as are films so stupid they're impossible to spoil, which is why I'm issuing a spoiler warning. If you've been on Mars, you might want to stop reading now.
François Truffaut once said the key to a great film ending was to create a combination of spectacle and truth, and there was a time when audiences would have been satisfied with that. Today, though, we like the rug to be pulled from beneath our feet as well.
Agatha Christie made a career out of wrongfooting readers; the killer in Ten Little Indians...

Making a low-budget horror feature that neither succumbs to nor strains to transcend its financial restrictions is harder than it appears, but the people behind Splinter make it look easy. Modest but not unambitious and put together with care on every level, it’s smart, scary and altogether satisfying creature feature of the type we don’t see enough of these days.
Director Toby Wilkins and screenwriters Kai Barry and Ian Shorr do have a bit of fun with genre expectations in the early scenes, as young lovers Seth (Paulo Costanzo) and Polly (Jill Wagner) set out for a camping trip in a rural area that we know is the hunting turf of a small, vicious creature that mauls a gas station attendant in the opening scene. The couple, however, is defeated by their tent, and they seem to be heading back to the safety of civilization when they’re...

As the eighth annual Screamfest drew to a close this past Sunday night in the heart of Hollywood, Fango attended the award ceremony held at Level 3 at Hollywood and Highland (see exclusive photos from the ceremony and fest below). With drinks flowing and merriment abounding, director Toby Wilkins’ creature feature Splinter swept the evening.
The movie (opening theatrically beginning October 31 from Magnolia) garnered golden Screamfest skulls for Best Picture, Best Directing, Best Makeup, Best Editing and Best Musical Score. Screamfest sponsor Boost was on hand to present filmmaker Tate Steinsiek with its Best of the Next in Horror award (which included a $10,000 cash prize) for his short film Clown, while director Michael Dougherty unsurprisingly picked up the Audience Choice award for his amazing Trick ‘R Treat. The full rundown of winners is below; for more on Screamfest, visit the official site linked above. (Special thanks to Rachel Belofsky and publicist...

September 20-26, 2008, is certain to go down in history as one of the bleakest weeks our country has faced. Between the proposed $700 billion bailout of Wall Street and the largest bank failure heretofore seen, there wasn't much to be happy about over the past seven days. Some might even say that, like genre films, it's the stuff of nightmares. But I prefer to get my dose of the dark side from fantasy horror, not the real thing. So let's put the bad news on hold for a bit and see what's been happening in our little corner of the world.
The perfect opportunity to escape reality is coming via La's Screamfest 08, and they released their full line-up earlier this week. Films I've been dying to see including 100 Feet, Trick 'r Treat, Parasomnia, and The Burrowers will be screened there. Rest assured we'll be all over it as it goes down from October 10th-19th.
