- Won Broadway's 1966 Tony Award as Best Director (Musical) for the original stage production of "Man of La Mancha." He had previously been Tony-nominated in 1956 as Best Director for Enid Bagnold's "The Chalk Garden.".
- He was set to direct the film version of "Man of La Mancha", and may have even cast some of the actors (those who could sing and/or had appeared in stage productions of the show, although this is unconfirmed), but he was let go before filming even began because United Artists was unhappy with his screen tests.
