The recent round of reboots hasn’t set the world on fire when it comes to winning accolades. But that changed with ABC’s “The Wonder Years,” which premiered last September. A big reason is it’s a complete reimagining. Instead of being a coming-of-age memory comedy about a young boy growing up in the late 1960s in a middle-class White family, the new version revolves around a Black family living in that pivotal decade in Montgomery, Alabama as seen through the eyes of a 12-year-old.
The reboot has already followed in the original’s footsteps earning a prestigious Peabody Award in June for “its willful depiction of Black Joy.” The initial version picked up the award in 1989 for “pushing boundaries of the sitcom format and using new modes of storytelling.” So will Emmys be far behind for freshman series starring Elisha “Ej” Williams as 12-year-old Dean Williams and Dull...

On Saturday, Patterson joined The Wonder Years stars Ej Williams, Dulé Hill and Saycon Sengbloh for the Deadline Contenders Television event to discuss the new chapter in The Wonder Years universe.

The series hails from writer and executive producer Saladin Patterson with Lee Daniels and Marc Velez of Lee Daniels Entertainment also executive producing. “Wonder Years” star Fred Savage will direct the pilot and executive produce. Neal Marlens, the original show’s creator, will serve as consultant.
“Maggie” is written by Maggie Mull and Justin Adler, with both also executive producing. Evan Hayes will also executive produce.

The Wonder Years reboot has been picked up to pilot by ABC alongside two other comedy projects.
The reboot of the classic 1980s family comedy drama was handed a pilot production commitment last summer and is now set to shoot its pilot this spring.
It will be set in the same era as the original, looking at how a black middle-class family in Montgomery, Alabama in the turbulent late 1960s made sure it was The Wonder Years for them too.
The new iteration comes from Dave exec producer Saladin Patterson, who writes and exec produces. The original series’ star Fred Savage will direct and exec produce, while Empire co-creator Lee Daniels and his Lee Daniels Entertainment partner Marc Velez will exec produce with the original co-creator Neal Marlens on board as a consultant.

The single-camera comedy comes from 20th Television.
It will be joined by Maggie and Regina Hicks’ sorority comedy.

ABC is officially turning back the clock to the 1960s: The Alphabet network has ordered a pilot for a reboot of The Wonder Years from executive producer Lee Daniels (Empire), TVLine has learned.

Original star Fred Savage will serve as an EP along with Daniels and will also direct the pilot. Neal Marlens, who...

Even after all these years, we still get by with a little help from our friends.
According to Deadline, ABC has committed to a pilot for a reboot of the classic ‘80s television drama/comedy The Wonder Years. The project will be developed by Dave executive producer Saladin K. Ferguson, Empire co-creator Lee Daniels, and original Wonder Years star Fred Savage.
Like the original series, this new iteration of The Wonder Years will take place in the socially and politically turbulent 1960s. But instead of following the white middle class Arnold family, the reboot will center on a Black middle class family from Montgomery, Alabama. The series will be written by Ferguson, who will draw from his experiences growing up in Montgomery. Savage will direct the pilot. As of now the series has a pilot commitment but the contract is written in such a way that if ABC picks up the pilot,...

ABC has handed a pilot production commitment to The Wonder Years, a new iteration of the network’s 1980s family comedy-drama. It comes from Dave executive producer Saladin K. Patterson, Empire co-creator Lee Daniels, the original series’ breakout star Fred Savage and 20th Century Fox TV.
Written by Patterson inspired by his experiences growing up in Montgomery, Al, the new incarnation of Wonder Years chronicles how a middle-class Black family in Montgomery in the turbulent late-1960s — the same era as the original series — made sure it was the Wonder Years for them too.
The approach is reminiscent of the successful current reimagining of the classic family sitcom One Day at a Time with a Latinx family.

A reboot of “The Wonder Years” has landed a pilot production commitment at ABC.
The new half-hour comedy series would focus on how a black middle class family in Montgomery, Alabama in the turbulent late 1960’s made sure it was The Wonder Years for them too. That puts the new show in the same time period as the original series, which was set between 1968 and 1973. A mini writer’s room for the show will be opened once ABC approves a pilot script.
Saladin K. Patterson will write and executive produce. Lee Daniels and Marc Velez will executive produce via Lee Daniels Entertainment. Derek Waters loves TV history — so much so that he even keeps a collection of old TV Guide magazines at home. As the co-creator and host of Comedy Central’s Emmy-nominated “Drunk History,” it’s perhaps no surprise that Waters reveres classic TV — particularly from his childhood era of the 1980s.
But here’s where he draws the line at nostalgia: Reboots and remakes.
“I hope some day, I’m alive to see some sort of law passed where something, be it ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ once a show or movie [has been given] some sort of accolade, it can be shut,” Waters told Variety‘s “My Favorite Episode” podcast. “You’re not allowed to touch this. Leave it alone.”
Waters’ suggestion: Just re-release a DVD of the original instead. “Don’t change it,” he added. “I’m trying to think of one thing where I’m so glad they rebooted that, and...

Created by Neal Marlens and Carol Black, The Wonder Years tells the story of Kevin Arnold (Fred Savage) as he faces the trials and tribulations of youth while growing up during the 1960s. Told through narration from the perspective of an adult Kevin (Daniel Stern), the character recounts his adolescent years in suburbia as a mishmash of major world events and personal childhood traumas. When the series began, it was set in the historically significant year of 1968. Using the backdrop of a transitional time in America’s history, the coming-of-age tale brings emotion and context to moments that would shape a nation. Yet, it’s surprisingly the smaller moments that chart the rocky terrain of childhood that we remember most. Snapshots of adolescence, from baseball games and holiday dinners to school dances and a first kiss, and all the moments in between, are what makes The Wonder Years so timelessly appealing.

Now that it’s finally been released on DVD, we look at the TV shows that built on The Wonder Years’ foundations…
The Wonder Years, famous for being the show that made a generation of kids nostalgic for a decade they’d never even set foot in, finally arrived on DVD this month following the resolution of a years-long music rights tangle. Neal Marlens and Carol Black’s comedy drama ran for six seasons between 1988 and 1993 on ABC, following Fred Savage’s Kevin Arnold through his late-sixties and early-seventies suburban adolescence.
Thematically, stylistically, and tonally, The Wonder Years blazed a trail for television comedy and teen-focused drama that was subsequently traipsed down by numerous shows, from the superlative Freaks And Geeks and My So-Called Life to How I Met Your Mother, Malcolm In The Middle and countless others. Its innovative film-style use of a single-camera, lack of laughter track, fourth-wall breaking,...

The Wonder Years
Cast: Fred Savage, Josh Saviano, Danica McKellar, Dan Lauria, Alley Mills, Daniel Stern, Jason Hervey
Due Out: October 7, 2014
Who’S It For? “The Wonder Years” is timeless. Thankfully it doesn’t feel dated simply because I was a child of the ’80s trying to understand life in the late ’60s. “The Wonder Years” was my gateway drug to a nostalgia I didn’t even know. Like many of you, I grew up with Kevin. I hoped for Winnie, I had friends like Paul (and probably was Paul more than I realized).
I can’t wait to show “The Wonder Years” to my son. I’ll have to wait, because he hasn’t even turned two yet, but now I have six episodes to show him, and hopefully that will just be the beginning.

The Wonder Years series is finally coming to DVD and StarVista Entertainment and Time Life have revealed the creative packaging for the 26-disc set! This is just one of several different ways that the series will be released.
This is one of my favorite TV series of all time, and I'm so happy that I'll actually be able to finally own it. I never thought it would happen. The show was created by Neal Marlens and Carol Black and it had a great cast, which included Fred Savage, Danica McKellar, Jason Hervey, and many more. If you haven't watched this series in awhile you might be surprised by some of the other actors that showed up in this show before they became big stars.
Here are some details of some of the other things that will be included with the set:

The Wonder Years, Season 1, Episode 1 “Pilot”
Directed by Steve Miner
Written by Neal Marlens and Carol Black
Aired January 31, 1988
The Wonder Years is a series built on and steeped in nostalgia: the first images we see and sounds we hear of the series are news footage of events from 1968, set to the The Byrds’ “Turn, Turn, Turn”. But The Wonder Years takes the idea of nostalgia even further: it’s not just a love letter to the Sixties in the suburbs, it is a look back at the trials and tribulations of adolescence, of the singular yet universal experience of being a child perched on the edge of adulthood. Thus, it is a show that appeals to more than just aging Boomers or Gen Xers who may have come of age at or around the same time as Kevin Arnold, the series’ main character – whatever decade it may have taken place,...

The Super Bowl is usually the highest-rated single television broadcast of the year, so the post time slot is probably the most coveted in TV because of the massive lead-in audience (upwards of 100 million viewers). But if the program that airs right afterwards typically draws big ratings, why don’t networks take advantage of this and premiere the pilot of a new series? Wouldn’t this be the best way to promote a show you think will be a huge hit? It would seem like a no-brainer, but in fact, that strategy isn’t always bulletproof. More often than not, a pilot for a new series won’t bring in the same high ratings as a special episode of an established series. Once the Big Game is over, most viewers will go ahead and switch the channel. Unless your a fan of the winning team, and care to sit through the post-game wrap up,...

This couldn’t come at a better time. Kate Kulzick recently asked me to take part in an upcoming episode of the Televerse podcast. The show’s guest spots feature in depth discussion of the guest’s favourite TV show from the past. Naturally I called dibs on The Wonder Years, one of my all time favourite series. The problem was that unlike most long-running popular American television series, The Wonder Years has still not yet been released on DVD despite popular demand – allegedly due to music licensing issues. However in a recent blog update on the Netflix website, Netflix stated that they would be adding The Wonder Years to their instant streaming service. Vulture is now reporting that all 115 episodes of the classic TV show have now made it to their streaming service with the soundtrack intact.
