A version of this story about Laura Linney and “Ozark” first appeared in the Comedy & Drama issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Looking back, it’s hard to believe there was ever a time in “Ozark” when Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney) wasn’t in the driver’s seat. The Netflix drama kicks off when Wendy’s husband Marty (Jason Bateman) relocates his family to Missouri to launder money for a Mexican drug cartel. By the series finale, which aired this April, it was clear who the real kingpin was: Marty may have dragged them into this mess, but only Wendy was willing to do whatever it took to survive.
Throughout four seasons of violence, betrayal and near-death experiences, that quality made Wendy one of Ozark’s most ruthless, unpredictable characters — and Linney one of its most compelling performers.
“From day one of the show, it was all about survival,” said...

The Byrde family makes one last effort to escape their criminal empire in the Season 4 Part 2 trailer of “Ozark.” The series will come to an explosive finish on April 29 when the final seven episodes debut on Netflix.
According to the official logline: “Marty and Wendy are rid of Helen and climb to the top of Navarro’s empire. They find another opportunity to get out of the Ozarks but some past sins won’t stay buried and the most dangerous threats come from blood.”
In the trailer, Marty (Jason Bateman) fears for the survival of his family as Ruth (Julia Garner) seeks revenge. “I’m just sick of having blood on my hands, Wendy. It doesn’t bother you?” Marty says, to which Wendy (Laura Linney) responds, “You’re so desperate to be the good guy.”

Netflix has released the official trailer for “Ozark” Season 4 Part 2, but if you’re fearful of spoilers you may want to hold off on watching — this one seems to potentially show a bit too much footage.
The fourth and final season of the Emmy-winning series was split in half, with the first batch of episodes dropping in January and leaving viewers on a whopper of a cliffhanger: Julia Garner’s Ruth Langmore, distraught by the murder of her cousin Wyatt, appeared to be on her way to murder new cartel boss Javier (Alfonso Herrera).
In the full trailer for Part 2, we see where that road leads. There are also rising tensions between Jason Bateman’s Marty Byrde and Laura Linney’s Wendy Byrde. “You’re so desperate to be the good guy,” Wendy tells Marty, while the two are clearly at the breaking point in their money laundering empire.

"Marty and Wendy are rid of Helen and climb to the top of Navarro's empire," teases the logline.
"They find another opportunity to get out of the Ozarks but some past sins won't stay buried and the most dangerous threats come from blood."
Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, Julia Garner, Sofia Hublitz, Skylar Gaertner, Charlie Tahan, Jessica Frances Dukes, Lisa Emery, Felix Solis, and Damian Young star.

Not quite two years will have passed between the release of “Ozark” Season 3 on Netflix and the upcoming premiere of Season 4 on January 21 — but for fans, that’s a very long time to wait to find out what is next for Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney).
Now at least fans have some clues. Netflix released a trailer January 6 for the first seven episodes of Season 4. (The second seven episodes will stream at a later date.) Here, Marty and Wendy seem poised to be free of their obligation to drug kingpin Omar Novarro — if they can just fulfill a few more small demands. Watch the trailer in the video below, which also teases a tense standoff with the FBI, more Julia Garner intensity, and Linney serving cool ruthlessness.

Netflix has debuted a trailer for Part 1 of the fourth and final season of “Ozark,” which premieres on Jan. 21.
The series stars Jason Bateman and Laura Linney as Marty and Wendy Byrde, who get entangled with the local criminals of the Ozarks in Missouri after moving there to continue their money laundering scheme. Season 4 will follow the couple after the killing of Helen Pierce (Janet McTeer), an attorney for the Navarro drug cartel. Omar Navarro (Felix Solis) brings Marty and Wendy further into the operation while they try to escape the Ozarks, but their past continues to haunt them.
“The Navarro cartel has been made aware that you intend to start producing heroin again,” Marty says to Darlene Snell (Lisa Emery) in the trailer. “They have instructed us to warn you their response is gonna be quick, and it’s gonna be brutal.”
“We’re just the messengers here,” adds Wendy.

The final season of “Ozark” will premiere Jan. 21, 2022 on Netflix with its first seven episodes. The second seven-episode half of the season will then follow later in the year.
“Ozark” follows the Byrde family’s criminal enterprise in the Ozarks. As patriarch Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) put it in the series premiere back in 2017, “Money is, at its essence, that measure of a man’s choices.” That quote is laid over the beginning of a teaser for the final season, implying it will come back to haunt him in the show’s final run.
The final season stars Bateman, Laura Linney, Julia Garner, Sofia Hublitz, Skylar Gaertner, Charlie Tahan, Jessica Frances Dukes, Lisa Emery, Felix Solis, Damian Young, Alfonso Herrera, Adam Rothenberg, John Bedford Lloyd, Joseph Sikora, Bruno Bichir, Cc Castillo, Katrina Lenk, Bruce Davison, Ali Stroker and Veronica Falcón. A few minutes ago, the Producers Guild Awards concluded, and with that, we can now say with a fair amount of certainty that Nomadland is in the driver’s seat for Best Picture. The Academy Awards could still potentially throw a curveball, but the odds don’t favor that. Rather, it sure seems like this movie is the Oscar pick. Sit tight for the rest of the guilds to chime in, but if you had to pick a film to repeat with the Academy, Nomadland is the one, especially after PGA… Here’s all of the winners from the Producers Guild Awards: Darryl F. The Producers Guild of America Awards awarded Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” with their top prize, one of the key indicators for the Academy Awards, particularly the best picture category. Edging out its closest competitors including Emerald Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman,” Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari” and Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” this might just end any questions about whether or not the moving drama is running away with the Oscars’ big prize.
All the acceptance speeches were pre-recorded with “Nomadland” giving a more produced, glitzier presentation than what we’ve seen at other award shows.
It should be noted that last year’s “1917” from Sam Mendes lost the Oscar after wins from PGA and DGA to “Parasite,” which only had the coveted SAG cast ensemble prize under its belt. Coincidentally, “Nomadland” is not nominated at SAG in their top category, leaving an opening for...

“Nomadland” look home the top film prize at the 2021 Producers Guild Awards Wednesday, bringing it closer to a Best Picture win. The winner of the PGA Awards’ top prize has historically been a strong indicator of which film will will go on to win the Best Picture Oscar. Since 1989, the PGA winner has matched up with the top Oscar 21 out of 31 times. It happened in 2018 with “Green Book,” but not last year: “1917” won at the 2020 PGAs, but the Academy Award for Best Picture went to “Parasite.”
This year, 10 movies competed for the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures (see the full list of nominees and winners below). Seven 2021 PGA nominees for the top prize are also 2021 Oscar Best Picture nominees: “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Mank,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Promising Young Woman,” “Sound Of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”

Servant, Apple TV+’s thriller from M. Night Shyamalan which launched its second season on Jan. 15, is showing strong year-to-year growth.
Season 2 premiere week viewership has more than doubled the audience that watched the show during the same time frame in Season 1, sources said.
Making the comparison even more advantageous, Apple TV+ released three episodes at launch for Season 1 in November 2019 vs. only one last week; meaning that the viewing of the Season 2 premiere episode during its first week more than doubled that for the first three episodes from Season 1 combined during post-launch week.
As is the case with all streamers, Apple TV+ does not release hard ratings data but Servant‘s performance is believed to be of the magnitude of such Apple TV+ ratings standouts as Defending Jacob and Ted Lasso.
Outside of the U.S., the sophomore season of Servant has posted big year-to-year viewership increases in such markets as France,...

This big, expensive and well-produced action-suspense Sci-fi epic mostly delivers on its promise to be Aliens at the bottom of the sea. At heart it’s a 1950s pulse-pounder with a bigger monster, a zillion times the budget and a script that does everything but make us care. We appreciate the likable characters but it’s too easy to predict who will ‘get it’ next. The realism factor is not bad at all, although the undersea explorer video training sessions should have given ‘how not to crack up under stress’ more emphasis. And can’t anybody properly mind those pesky nuclear bombs?
