In You Were Never Really Here, Joaquin Phoenix plays Joe, a traumatized veteran who tracks down missing girls for a living. You Were Never Really Here is directed by Lynne Ramsay and based on the book of the same name by Jonathan Ames. Ramsay’s last film We Need to Talk About Kevin was as stellar and unsettling as they come. She’s an exciting filmmaker, and despite an April release of her film, will be talked about during awards season this fall.
My only caveat is that I didn’t watch this trailer until after I saw the movie. I watched about 10 seconds just to see what it was all about and I turned it off. I knew I was in. Having said that, it’s not that the trailer ruins the movie, my viewing experience having not watched the trailer was great. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.

Chicago – Actor Joaquin Phoenix almost solely specializes in portraying broken souls, but he also does it with such intensity that he adds necessary depth to those characters, to allow for their redemption. As a hit man for hire in the new film “You Were Never Really Here,” he again reaches beyond the darkness.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The film is an adaptation of a Jonathan Ames novel, and is directed by Lynne Ramsay (“We Need to Talk About Kevin”). Like “Kevin,” it is a moody interpretation of a highly salacious subject, the use of preteen girls for prostitution. Phoenix is a hardened Marine combat veteran-turned-hit-man whose only soft spot is for his aging mother. The process of the story is to get him to feel again, but it is done through many tortuous emotional encounters and his own brand of violent justice. Ramsay’s cinema landscape is a dreamy one, and protects the...

Just in time for the Cannes announcements, Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here, which debuted at last year’s event, is headed to U.S. theaters. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, the Amazon Studios feature had a solid opening in the U.K. last month. The title headlines a fairly wide pack of newcomers this weekend, including A24’s Lean On Pete by British filmmaker Andrew Haigh and starring Steve Buscemi, Chloë Sevigny and Charlie Plummer. Great Point Media/Paladin are launching Where Is Kyra? with Michelle Pfeiffer and Kiefer Sutherland in roles the director, Andrew Dosunmu, swears fans of the two will be surprised by. And Well Go USA is opening Tribeca ’17 thriller, The Endless in New York before heading to L.A. next week.
Also opening in limited release is Warner Bros.’ Pandas. Other titles making bows this weekend include Sweet Country with Sam Neil and Bryan Bishop as well as Shout!

Joaquin Phoenix is simply stupendous in You Were Never Really Here. His performance is damn near flammable—dangerous if you get too close. What a team he makes with Scottish writer-director Lynne Ramsay, whose output is small but inarguably stunning (Ratcatcher, Movern Caller, We Need to Talk About Kevin). Working from a 2013 novel by Jonathan Ames, the actor and the filmmaker craft a fiercely brilliant drama that gets under your skin and makes it crawl.

Ever since the Cannes Film Festival last year, buzz has been building for Lynne Ramsay’s follow up to We Need to Talk About Kevin. The movie in question is You Were Never Really Here, and boy is it something. Opening this week, Ramsay has crafted something truly remarkable. Very much a cinematic cousin to Drive, this is the filmmaker putting her stamp on what otherwise could be a throwaway genre outing. Whereas a studio would have shaved off the rough edges and made this a Liam Neeson vehicle (not that those don’t have their own merits), here we have something far more offbeat. It’s also easily one of the three best films of 2018 so far. The movie is like a lucid fever dream. IMDb describes it as such: “A traumatized veteran, unafraid of violence, tracks down missing girls for a living. When a job spins out of control,...

We posted the official Us trailer back in December, but if you still aren't sold on it, then check this one out + the new UK poster below. This film made my Top 10 of 2017 and I've been raving about it ever since seeing it in Cannes last year (read my review). Natalie Portman as Jacqueline Kennedy: 'Jackie.' Natalie Portman as Jacqueline Kennedy in 'Jackie' Notwithstanding the box office-friendly Thor movies, which revolve around Chris Hemsworth in the title role, Natalie Portman has yet to have a star vehicle as impactful as Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan, which earned her the Best Actress Academy Award nearly five years ago. Who knows, perhaps Pablo Larraín's Jackie will be one such vehicle; the biopic following U.S. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in the days after President John F. Kennedy assassination is slated for a 2017 release. The image above is the official “first look,” initially posted at Deadline.com. Also in the Jackie cast: Peter Sarsgaard as Robert Kennedy, Max Casella, Beth Grant, and Greta Gerwig. Darren Aronofsky and Juan de Dios Larraín are the two credited producers, while Noah Oppenheim (The Maze Runner, The Divergent Series: Allegiant) is the credited screenwriter.

Oprah Winfrey to help ‘The Butler’ top the domestic box office? (Photo: Oprah Winfrey, Terrence Howard in ‘The Butler’) About a week ago, Oprah Winfrey was in the news for being told that a $38,000 crocodile-skin purse at a store in Zurich wasn’t really for her. The uproar was related to racism: possibly, supposedly, maybe the saleswoman-for-the-filthy-rich felt that a black woman wouldn’t be able to afford a $38,000 crocodile-skin purse, even though those stores for the disgustingly megarich — I mean, $38,000 for a goddamned purse? Crocodile skin? — surely cater to the wives and mistresses and aunts of megarich African entrepreneurs and dictators alike. Fast forward a week or so and … Oprah Winfrey is back in the news as a result of another "incident" related to ethnic issues: the weekend debut of Lee Daniels’ The Weinstein Company-distributed The Butler, about a black butler in the appropriately named White House. The Butler...

Just as Lee Daniels' upcoming White House drama “The Butler” takes place over the course of eight presidencies, naturally the film is going to be populated with a talented, expansive cast. It's certainly attracted an interesting bunch already, with Robin Williams and Alan Rickman inhabiting the roles of Dwight Eisenhower and Ronald Reagan, respectively, and today one more actor prepares to go presidential. A few days after James Marsden filled in for the JFK role when Matthew McConaughey dropped out, Liev Schreiber has signed on to play the role of Lyndon B. Johnson, as well as “Shame” co-star Alex Manette as H.R. Haldeman, the top aide to Nixon (played by John Cusack). With all of these Potus (plural) running around, Daniels must be employing a legion of make-up artists to handle the job, but another approach could be the more casual, performance-based style Oliver Stone practiced with Josh Brolin...

He’ll play a securities lawyer in the story that features the financial takedown of Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio). The actor/director will be joined by an eclectic cast including Jonah Hill, Jean Dujardin, Kyle Chandler, P.J. Byrne and fellow director Rob Reiner. Favreau has always had a fun screen presence, and at the very least maybe he’ll glean a few tips from the directing master.

Director Lynne Ramsay’s last film was 2002’s Morvern Callar and involved a woman’s psychological struggle with her life. Her new film, We Need to Talk About Kevin, is an equally troubling portrait of a mother struggling with a hateful child and a husband who refuses to see the light.
Eva and Franklin (Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly) are a happy young couple in New York City with thriving careers and a cozy apartment. This is soon upended when they welcome a baby boy named Kevin. As an infant, he screams and cries in the company of his mother, only to quiet down and coo around his father.
Kevin is an unhealthy child psychologically, as he has no friends or interest in knowing anyone, including his parents. He quickly draws a line in the sand between his parents, manipulating and pitting them against each other as the he gets older.

Director: Steve McQueen Writers: Steve McQueen, Abi Morgan Starring: Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan, Nicole Beharie, James Badge Dale, Alex Manette, Elizabeth Masucci, Robert Montano, Hannah Ware, Calamity Chang, DeeDee Luxe I wonder if Ron Jeremy is getting jealous over of all of the publicity that has been generated by Michael Fassbender's penis? It is quite impressive -- the publicity, that is -- and while discussing writer-director Steve McQueen's Shame, it is the elephant in the room. (That is not intended to be a comment on the size of said penis, though you can take it as one if you wish, as Smells Like Screen Spirit is a classy publication that does not intend to focus its efforts on the critiquing of actors' genitalia.) The reason Fassbender's penis is getting so much press is because film audiences (especially within the puritanical boarders of the United States) are not used...

Shame Trailer. Steve McQueen‘s Shame (2011) international movie trailer stars Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan, James Badge Dale, Amy Hargreaves, and Elizabeth Masucci. Shame‘s plot synopsis: “Shame centers around a New Yorker named Brandon (Fassbender) who avoids intimacy but is compulsively addicted to sex. When his troubled younger sister (Mulligan) comes to stay with him in his apartment, he finds his orderly life disrupted by her presence and reminders of their unhappy past.”
I saw a brief clip for this film months ago and instantly became intrigued by the film. Now the international movie trailer has been released and I like what I see and more importantly what I do not see.
More on the film:
Though it is, by all accounts, a powerful character-driven drama, it’s gained some notoriety for reports of its rather explicit portrayals of “male and female full-frontal nudity, graphic depictions of straight/gay/threeway sex,...
