Callie Haverda, the Austin-hailing 15-year-old ushering in a “new wave of kids” in Netflix’s “That ‘70s Show” spinoff, had previously turned down auditions for series filmed in front of live audiences. So one can imagine her surprise when she noticed the viewer bleachers after she had booked the lead role of Leia Forman, her first major starring part.
“I was always so terrified of [live audiences] for no reason because it was something that I’d never done. I was unsure of how it would end up being, and I didn’t know that ’90s’ was going to be filmed in front of a live studio audience. So I was getting a tour of the set and the producer Steve Sandoval was like, ‘And those are the bleachers, that’s where the live audience is going to be.’ And I was like, ‘Awesome!‘” Haverda told TheWrap, feigning excitement.

Hello Wisconsin! “That ’90s Show,” the sequel series to popular Fox sitcom “That ’70s Show,” will premiere on Netflix January 19, the streamer announced Tuesday.
The original “That ’70s Show,” which ran from 1998 to 2006, revolved around a group of six teenagers living in Point Place, Wisconsin during the late ’70s. The sequel series focuses on Leia (Callie Haverda), the daughter of original series leads Eric (Topher Grace) and Donna (Laura Prepon), who decides to spend the summer of 1995 in Point Place with her grandparents, Red (Kurtwood Smith) and Kitty (Debra Jo Rupp) from the original series. While in the small town, she meets new friends and engages in many of the same antics that her parents did two decades ago.
In a teaser released by Netflix along with the date announcement, several locations from the original series — including Eric’s old basement and the town water tower — are revisited and recreated.

Female directors hit another milestone tonight when The Crown‘s Jessica Hobbs won Outstanding Directing For a Drama Series and Hacks‘ Lucia Aniello Won Outstanding Directing For a Comedy Series, respectively. This marks the first time women have swept both directing categories in the same year.
Hobbs being recognized for directing the Season 4 finale of Netflix’s The Crown, marks only the fourth time in 67 years that the Emmy Award in the Outstanding Directing For a Drama Series category has been won by a woman.
The rarity of the occasion was not lost on Hobbs, who also was nominated in the category for The Crown last year
“Not a lot of women have won this award so I feel I’m standing on the shoulders of some really extraordinary people,” she said on stage accepting the awards. “I’m very grateful for the path they led, and I particularly would...

Last year’s 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards (affectionately known as the Pandemmys because it took place during the Covid-19 pandemic), rewarded a total of 23 contenders with trophies. Shows like “Schitt’s Creek” and “Succession” and actors like Billy Crudup and Zendaya all claimed victory from the safety of their own homes. But of those 23 winners, shockingly only two are eligible to repeat at the 2021 Emmys: “RuPaul’s Drag Race” for Best Competition Program and “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” for Best Variety Talk Series. And they’ll both probably win again.
So, what gives? Why are there so many ineligible shows this time around? It’s a mixture of some programs having ended last year and the coronavirus pandemic halting production on others. “Schitt’s Creek” accounted for all seven of the primetime comedy categories, so that means all of those are up for grabs this year. The book became a summer publishing success story, appearing on numerous “Best Of” lists including Amazon, Oprah Mag, BuzzFeed, PopSugar, SheReads, and The Mary Sue. NBCUniversal has selected the directed the 2020-2021 classes for the Female Forward and the Emerging Director Program. The scripted directing initiatives aim to increase representation of female and ethnically diverse male and non-binary directors, respectively, by creating a pipeline into scripted television. The announcement was made by Janine Jones-Clark as Executive Vice President, Inclusion – Talent & Content, NBCUniversal Film, Television and Streaming.
Both initiatives remain unique within the industry in that they are the only network programs to guarantee that participating directors will helm an episode of primetime television by the conclusion of the program. Program directors shadow on up to two episodes of their assigned NBC scripted series before receiving an in-season assignment to helm an episode of the same series.

The virtual Emmys are in the books, and in a first for 2020, not much went wrong! (Especially for “Schitt’s Creek.”)
Sunday’s first trophy went to Catherine O’Hara, who won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the final season of “Schitt’s Creek.” The Pop TV sitcom (by way of the CBC) then won the next six awards.
You read that right: “Schitt’s Creek” won all seven of its seven possible Emmys tonight. Insane.
The final Emmy of the evening, Outstanding Drama Series, went to HBO’s “Succession.” Showrunner Jesse Armstrong also won for writing on the series, and star Jeremy Strong took home Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Additionally, Andrij Parekh won an Emmy for directing on “Succession.”
HBO’s “Watchmen” also had a strong Sunday, winning four Emmys, including Outstanding Limited Series.
See all of the night’s winners and nominees below.

For the first time in recent memory, the Emmys has been a weeklong affair. Historically, the annual TV awards are given out on consecutive weekends, with Creative Arts Emmys bestowed before the nationally televised primetime celebration. This week, we’ve already seen multiple nights of Emmys, with five sets of nominees and winners taking center stage between Monday and Saturday.
Six months of virtual campaigning and a near-complete lack of traditional FYC events meant that the ceremonies weren’t the only thing that would be unpredictable this year. Predicting potential winners is the hardest it’s ever been, but we at least know that the festivities will conclude tonight with the Jimmy Kimmel-hosted Primetime Emmy telecast on Sunday evening.

Just two months after passing away at the age of 86, Fred Willard received a posthumous Emmy nomination for his guest role as Phil’s (Ty Burrell) father Frank Dunphy on the 11th and final season of ABC’s “Modern Family,” which comes 10 years after his first and only other bid for the series. Also a three-time nominee for his guest turn on “Everybody Loves Raymond” (2003-05), Willard received all five of his Primetime Emmy noms in the Best Comedy Guest Actor category, in which he now ties Nathan Lane as the individual with the most citations.

A version of this story about Gail Mancuso first appeared in the Emmy Hot List issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
Over 11 seasons and 250 episodes of ABC’s “Modern Family,” Gail Mancuso has been one of the ABC sitcom’s most frequent directors, shooting more than 30 episodes since 2010. Like Glatter, she was entrusted with the final episode of a long-running series, and humbled by that assignment.
“It was an honor to be asked,” she said. “It could have really gone to anybody. And so many elements of a final episode are intangible. When you look at the script, you can’t say, ‘We’re going to have 15 minutes of crying here, so let’s put that in.’ You can’t budget for the emotion that will happen.”
Her approach to directing the “Finale” episode, she said, was simple: “I went in with the mantra, let’s savor every second. There...

“It was almost like a reunion, where you haven’t seen people in a long time, but in reverse,” reveals Gail Mancuso about shooting the final episode of “Modern Family.” In our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above), she adds, “It was like we were not going to see these people again. Everybody wanted to have their moments. Everybody was taking pictures. I don’t think I’ll experience anything like that again.”
“Modern Family” was the comedy mockumentary chronicling the Pritchett and Dunphy families, which ran for 11 seasons on ABC. It is one of the most successful series in Emmy history, winning 22 awards, including a record tying five for Best Comedy Series. Mancuso has directed episodes every year and explains, “This is history, in the sense it will be in reruns. I wanted to make sure the pace was good that the comedy was good. I put a lot of pressure on myself.

Emmy recognition for female directors was a long, long time coming. The playing field is a bit more level but has a long way to go. Eght of the 20 nominees for directing in the comedy series, drama series, and movie/limited series categories are women.
The first Emmy for outstanding directing was handed out in 1955 to Franklin Schaffner for the “Studio One” live drama “Twelve Angry Men” (he won an Oscar 15 years later for helming Best Picture champ “Patton”). It wasn’t until 30 years later that a woman director was even nominated in that category. Karen Arthur made history again when she won an Emmy for the “Heat” episode of CBS’ “Cagney & Lacey.” It was the only nomination and win for this prolific TV helmer.

Disney Television Studios has launched a major rebrand of its three studios, 20th Century Fox Television, Fox 21 TV Studios and ABC Studios/ABC Signature. The move comes nearly 18 months after Disney’s $71.3 billion acquisition of key 21st Century Fox assets and seven months after the Disney-owned film companies — 20th Century Fox Studios and Fox Searchlight Pictures — dropped “Fox” in January to become 20th Century Studios and Searchlight Pictures.

Inclusion and parity are all the rage right now — a process that has been long in coming and is far from over — but creating an equal environment among colleagues in the entertainment industry isn’t as easy as it might seem. That includes the Emmy candidates for directing and writing. Actors are traditionally divided by gender, but not so with the other categories.
As Frank Scherma, chairman and CEO of the television academy, remarked before host Leslie Jones kicked off the virtual socially-distanced reading of the nominees, “This year we are also bearing witness to one of the greatest fights for social justice in history, and it is our duty to use this medium for change. That is the power and responsibility of television — not only delivering a multitude of services or a little escapism, but also amplifying the voices that must be heard and telling the stories that must be told.

Last year, Game of Thrones ended in awards style with its final season securing 32 nomination and the HBO fantasy drama winning the Emmy for Best Drama Series.
There won’t be any comparable achievement on the drama side this year, but the teams behind Schitt’s Creek and The Good Place will be crossing their fingers that their comedies can end in similar style as they racked up more than 20 nominations between them this morning.
The NBC comedy and Pop TV’s CBC co-production will go head-to-head in the Best Comedy category for their final seasons with a multitude of nominations for cast as well.
BoJack Horseman will also be hoping that the washed-up ’90s anthropomorphic horse can trot off in style with a win in the Outstanding Animated Program category. The Netflix cartoon ended its six-season run in January.

Women landed one third of all the Primetime Emmy nominations in the seven directing categories, a record high for the Television Academy.
In total, 16 women were recognized this year out of 48 total directing nominations — a big jump from last year, when nine out of 49 directing nominees (just over 18%) were women. And this year, a woman was nominated in every single directing category, after two straight years of no female directors getting a nod for a reality series and one year without a woman picking up a nom for a variety series.
Before this year, female directors had the highest representation in 2013, when eight of the 33 nominees — or 24% — were women. That was when there were still just six directing categories, as reality series had not been added to the list at that time.
In the writing categories, women landed 33 nominations out of a total of 120 nominees, or 27.5%. That’s a slight...

Sifting through the Emmy nominees is the closest that TV fans get to playing fantasy sports. It’s a numbers game with achievements for individuals and shows and networks, each with their growing lists of respective histories and benchmarks. Some of the Emmys heavy hitters of years past have gone on to TV retirement. So with those streaks now unable to be continued, there’s a new crop of nominees in some of the headline categories.
But even though that’s where plenty of numerical Emmys history is made, there are other noms of note up and down this year’s final ballot. We’ll add more as we continue to comb through the endless tallies, but for now, here are some that caught our eye:
Notable Nominations Numbers
Netflix set the pace this year with an astounding 160 nominations, trouncing HBO’s former record of 137. In doing so, it also...

A record 10.6% of the directors of 2019’s top 100-grossing movies were women, directing 12% of Hollywood’s biggest hits last year, according to the latest study by Stacy L. Smith and USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative.
That’s the best gender representation since Smith and her team began studying the prevalence of female directors in 2007 — though the overall percentage remains 4.8% across all 13 years of the research. The top-grossing female filmmaker was Jennifer Lee, who co-directed the year’s No. 4 domestic box office hit, “Frozen II,” with Chris Buck.
“This is the first time we have seen a shift in hiring practices for female film directors in 13 years,” Smith said, noting that Universal alone had five films in the top 100 with female directors: Jill Culton’s “Abominable,” Melina Matsoukas’ “Queen & Slim,” Tina Gordon’s “Little,” Gail Mancuso’s “A Dog’s Journey” and Kasi Lemmons’ “Harriet” (through art-house division Focus Features). “Yet there...

‘Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood.’
Quentin Tarantino’s ninth movie Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood posted the biggest debut of his career in Australia last weekend, emulating its Us success.
The 1969-set drama/thriller starring Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie and Damon Herriman opened 68 per cent bigger than his previous best effort Django Unchained in 2012.
The downside: The Sony Pictures release sucked a lot of air from the second weekends of Universal’s Palm Beach and Transmission Films’ Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan.

NBC’s push for diversity and inclusion continues as it unveils the 2019-2020 classes for Female Forward and the Emerging Director Program, two pioneering scripted initiatives to increase the representation of female and ethnically diverse directors by creating a pipeline into scripted television. The initiatives stand out as the only programs in the industry that give participating directors an in-season guarantee to direct at least one episode.
Female Forward, which aims to achieve gender parity in the director’s chair, ushers in its second year with seven directors helming episodes of NBC shows. The new class of Female Forward directors and the NBC series they will direct include Kris Lefcoe (Superstore), Brenna Malloy (Chicago Fire), Sj Main Muñoz (Chicago Med), Kim Nguyen (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and Sara Zandieh (Good Girls).

Gail Mancuso always thought her feature-film directorial debut would be a comedy, given her background of having directed some of the biggest sitcoms in the history of TV. Instead, she found herself drawn to “A Dog’s Journey” due to the emotional connection she has to animals as well as the messages the film sends to viewers.
“Everything was leaning towards the comedy genre,” Mancuso told TheWrap. “I thought naturally I would do a comedy and I was working on one with Amblin, but then all of a sudden Amblin told me, ‘We have this other one that’s ready to go.’ [‘A Dog’s Purpose’ and ‘A Dog’s Journey’ producer] Gavin Polone knew me from ‘Gilmore Girls’ and we powwowed, and he knew I was an animal lover and had all these dogs, so I read it and, being a woman and loving the Cj story, I knew we could make it into something very special. Unusually, all of the top five films at the China box office this weekend were non-Chinese. That’s a relatively rare occurrence, as audiences typically favor local films over foreign content. But it is one that may happen more often, as high-performing local titles become fewer and farther between due to production slowdowns.
The lack of strong local titles is also having a negative impact on the overall box office. Data from Artisan Gateway shows China’s year to date cumulative grosses down 4%, at $3.79 billion.
Legendary Pictures’ title “Detective Pikachu” led the pack in its second weekend in Chinese theaters, bringing in $17.8 million for a total of $69.3 million in the Middle Kingdom, making it the most successful territory for the film so far outside of North America. In ten days the furry yellow critter has already helped the film pull in more than Warner Brothers’ superhero flick “Shazam!”, which made...

Lionsgate/Summit’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum grossed a great $5.9M last night, a figure that blows away the R-rated action pic’s previous previews.
The first John Wick Thursday previews earned $950K while John Wick 2 made $2.2M, which repped 20% of its $10.95M Friday. John Wick 3‘s Thursday is even higher than the previews for Sony/MGM’s last James Bond movie Spectre which made $5.25M (which went on to earn a $27.4M Friday), and even 2012’s Skyfall ($4.6M Thursday, $30.5M Friday), though both of those pics were PG-13.
The Keanu Reeves R-rated action threequel from director Chad Stahelski (who helmed John Wick: Chapter 2) is poised to see the series’ highest domestic opening this weekend with $50M at 3,850 theaters, finally unseating Disney’s Avengers: Endgame in its fourth weekend which is expected to do $30M at 4,220. Endgame led all titles on Thursday with $3.4M at 4,662 bringing its three week running total to $741.38M.

The first A Dog’S Purpose was a gooey, family-friendly tear-jerker, but this 50-something dog-lover fell right into its heartfelt paws and it ended up on my top ten list of 2017’s best films. It told the story of one devoted dog who discovers the meaning of his own existence by dropping dead every half hour or so (after his life has run its course) and becoming reincarnated as a newborn pup with a diverse series of new owners. Josh Gaad voiced the hound and while the first film was like an episodic panorama of America as viewed through a dog’s innocent eyes, the sequel offers up a different narrative structure. A Dogs Journey focuses on Clarity Jane (fortunately shortened to Cj), the step-granddaughter of Dennis Quaid’s returning Ethan, and all of the different dogs (who have the same soul and are again voiced by Gaad) who guard...

Actor Dennis Quaid believes pets teach people a lot about life. He was happy to open up on this facet through his film "A Dog's Journey".
A sequel to the heartwarming "The Dog's Purpose", the film is directed by Gail Mancuso. Based on a novel by W. Bruce Cameron with the same name, "A Dog's Journey" is about the adventures of Bailey (dog) through multiple lives.
"I've always been a dog person and each one I have had has meant a lot to me. They're a member of the family, as well as a sponge that can take on your personality," Quaid said in a statement.
"When they go, it's usually the first time that children learn about death in their life. That's what's so beautiful about these movies, with Bailey's reincarnation and coming back as this same spirit," he added.
Quaid will be seen as Bailey's best friend Ethan.

After three weeks of mostly “Avengers”-fueled windfalls for the box office, the market is starting to slow down again heading into Memorial Day Weekend. Disney might be able to boost numbers again next week with “Aladdin,” but for now, Lionsgate is hoping to win over audiences looking for a more mature action flick with “John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum.”
The return of the Keanu Reeves revenge series comes as Lionsgate tries to rebuild after two years of box office frustration. 2018 saw domestic grosses plummet to $388 million, and new heads Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane have set out to rebrand Lionsgate as a studio that can be a haven for creators, particularly those with original ideas.

After a career of directing for TV, Gail Mancuso switched gears at the premiere of her feature directorial-debut, A Dog’s Journey, on Thursday evening, which began with a screening at the ArcLight Hollywood and ended at the nightclub Le Jardin.
Dog houses paired with abnormally sized tennis balls decorated a green carpet. Dennis Quaid took full advantage of the area, walking the carpet with his miniature bulldog, Peaches.
“Peaches was in it, but she got cut out. She came anyway,” Quaid said, joking, “She's working with [Martin] Scorsese now, so she doesn't care....

Actor Dennis Quaid feels women have a nurturing instinct, and his upcoming film A Dog's Journey focuses on the quality.?After starring in 2017 film A Dog's Purpose, Quaid will be back as Ethan in its sequel A Dog's Journey.
"Ethan has now married the love of his life, he was a very lonely figure before, one who liked solitude and felt alienated from the world. He's grown a lot and is much happier than he was before." Quaid said in a statement.
He also appreciated how Ethan and his dog Bailey's story has expanded. "Bailey's present within the family circle now, the bond is stronger."
The actor continued: "Many women have a nurturing instinct, and that's present in this film."
On his role, Quaid said: "Ethan still doesn't quite know how to handle the conflict between Gloria and the rest of the family. He just wants peace in the house.

You know things are bad for women in Hollywood when there’s one female dog featured in canine cutefest “A Dog’s Journey,” and it still gets to be voiced by Josh Gad. That is, admittedly, an unavoidable consequence of this family franchise’s curious Buddhism-for-beginners premise: the idea that one mind and soul can be carried through the bodies of multiple mutts over the course of eternity, with Gad as our perky spiritual ferry through repeated rounds of Rover reincarnation. As if to compensate, Gail Mancuso’s blandly agreeable sequel to the boy-focused 2017 hit “A Dog’s Purpose” reorients its human narrative around a young woman’s troubled road to love and self-fulfilment — via the trusty companionship of various devoted pups.
That aside, fans of the first film will be delighted to find the formula pretty much untweaked, with a steady stream of corn-syrup sentiment binding what would otherwise...

Endgame is already up to £55m after just eight days on release in the UK.
Last week’s remarkable opening for Disney’s Avengers: Endgame means even if the film suffers a relatively standard drop this weekend (50-60%), it will still dominate the chart for a second week.
Endgame kicked off with a three-day £31.4m, far ahead of the previous benchmark of £24.3m held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. After midweeks, the film was up to a huge £55m after just eight days.
The Marvel title is expected to become one of the highest-grossing films in UK box office history.

There is apparently a sizable overlap between people who like films in which cute dogs scamper around happily, and people who like films in which cute dogs drop dead every half an hour. In 2017, “A Dog’s Purpose” catered to both groups by telling the tale of Bailey, whose soul transmigrates into the body of a newborn pup whenever he dies. He is granted a different name, breed, and (sometimes) gender with each metempsychosis, but his enthusiastic thoughts are always voiced by Josh Gad, and he retains his loyalty to his favorite master, Ethan, played in the film’s later scenes by Dennis Quaid.
Critics agreed that “A Dog’s Purpose” was, well, a dog, but Bailey, who can recall his past lives, is back in the sequel, “A Dog’s Journey”.
Again, it is a glossily nostalgic and moralistic Nicholas Sparks-style melodrama co-written by W. Bruce Cameron, and adapted from his novel.
