- He designed residences n New York City; Paris; Martha's Vineyard; Ojai, CA; and Groton Plantation, South Carolina.
- Raised in Manhattan; Southport, CT; and Jupiter Island, FL, he lived most of his adult life in Boston and Manhattan with many summers in later years in Saumur, France.
- He was named after his maternal grandfather William Woods Plankinton.
- He started out as an architect and designer in the office of George Nelson.
- He worked in theater and film art direction and set design, in collaboration with Douglas W. Schmidt as well as independently.
- He attended Eaglebrook School in Deerfield and later in Brooks School in N. Andover. Both schools are located in Massachusetts, USA.
- He died from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), which is a nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. There is no cure for this fatal disease. At his funeral, his family requested that in lieu of flowers, donations to be made in his name to Compassionate Care ALS.
- He received his BA from University of Virginia and an MA in Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design.
