John Williams turns 92 years old next month, but the legendary composer says he isn’t ready to put down his baton just yet.
Williams himself previously hinted at retirement last year, suggesting that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny would be his final film score. However, in a new interview with The Times of London, Williams clarified his status: “I don’t care much for grand pronunciamentos, statements that are firm and finished and surrounded by closed doors. If I made one without putting it in context then I withdraw it.”
“If a film came along that I was greatly interested in, with a schedule that I could cope with, then I wouldn’t want to rule anything out,” Williams added. “Everything is possible. All is before us. Only our limitations are holding us back. Or, to put it more simply: I like to keep an open mind.”

At the start of Rian Johnson's 2022 murder mystery "Glass Onion," several characters — each from seemingly disparate walks of life — receive mysterious, elaborate puzzle boxes in the mail. The boxes seem to have come from Miles Bron, a wealthy tech industrialist, and self-proclaimed "disruptor," clearly modeled after dubiously important blowhards like Elon Musk. Each of the characters in question are old friends with Miles, and he occasionally sends out these puzzles for fun, but also when he has "important" to share. The first ten minutes of "Glass Onion" are devoted to Miles' compatriots calling each other on the phone and solving the boxes together.
One of the challenges in Miles' box is a tinkly piece of music from a miniature orchestrina. None of the characters can identify the piece in question, however. Not the politician Claire (Kathryn Hahn), not the scientist Lionel, not the Men's Right activist Duke (Dave Bautista...

One of the great joys seeing Rian Johnson's latest whodunnit "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery" in a theater was hearing the reaction of the audience whenever there was a cameo from a very famous person. Nothing about this murder mystery from the outset signals that these celebrities will show up, making them even more delightful when they do.
The very first cameo comes at the definitely not Covid-safe house party thrown by Kate Hudson's Birdie Jay. After receiving her puzzle box invitation from Edward Norton's Miles Bron, one of the party guests that helps solve one of the puzzles is legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma who is in attendance and chomping on a slice of pizza. In his cameo, he explains the structure of a fugue, which is a piece of music that essentially layers over the...

After just 10 days on Netflix, “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” has cracked Netflix’s Most Popular English Films list at No. 10. In that span of time, the “Knives Out” sequel is behind only “Red Notice” and “Don’t Look Up,” meaning that the film has been viewed by audiences at a faster rate than previous titles.
In its second week atop the Netflix Top 10, the movie, from writer-director Rian Johnson, has amassed 127.25 million hours viewed on the English Films list. Premiering on the streamer Dec. 23, the critically acclaimed follow-up has entered the Most Popular list at 209.4 million hours viewed.
Since its debut on Netflix (following a week-long theatrical run in late November), 90 million households have viewed the satirical murder-mystery flick. With another 18 days left to beat the records of “Red Notice” (364 million hours viewed) and “Don’t Look Up” (359.8 million hours viewed), “Glass Onion” stands poised to potentially become the streaming...

This article contains major spoilers for "Glass Onion."
There are a number of insights one can glean about Rian Johnson as a filmmaker from his "Knives Out" films, but one of his most extraordinary abilities is that of pulling together a show-stopping, ensemble cast. In "Glass Onion," the latest entry in Johnson's whodunit series, folks like Dave Bautista, Kathryn Hahn, Kate Hudson, Edward Norton, Leslie Odom Jr., and Jessica Henwickare give their all to these puzzle-riddled characters. Then comes Janelle Monáe, who steals the movie right out from under them.
But even beyond the key players, Johnson manages to insert a wealth of cameos, all of which feel natural to the world of "Glass Onion." Serena Williams makes a hilarious appearance on a live interactive interface in Miles' exercise room. Yo-Yo Ma pops his head in for a moment, as does Ethan Hawke. Rian Johnson's new film "Glass Onion," a sequel to his 2019 comedic murder mystery "Knives Out," boasts, like its predecessor, a massively impressive cast. While the first featured the likes of Christopher Plummer, Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, Toni Collette, Michael Shannon, Ana de Armas, and Don Johnson, the sequel contains Dave Bautista, Janelle Monáe, Edward Norton, Kathryn Hahn, Kate Hudson, and Leslie Odom, Jr. "Glass Onion," not to be outdone, also features notable cameos from Hugh Grant, Jake Tapper, Serena Williams, and Yo-Yo Ma. In a very amusing scene, the film's central detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) shares a video call with Stephen Sondheim, Natasha Lyonne, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Angela Lansbury, all playing themselves.
Since the filming of "Glass Onion," both Lansbury and Sondheim passed away, at 96 and 91 respectively. That they were willing to appear in Johnson's film is a testament to their gameness, and perhaps to Johnson's charm as a filmmaker.

Glass Onion, the sequel to Rian Johnson’s hit 2019 murder mystery film Knives Out, has finally arrived on Netflix.
Glass Onion has been warmly received by critics, with The Independent’s Clarisse Loughrey describing it as “populist entertainment with its head screwed on right”.
It’s fair to say not everyone agrees, however.
The film sees Daniel Craig return as the ace sleuth Benoit Blanc, surrounded by a host of new characters played by Edward Norton, Dave Bautista, Kate Hudson, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr, Jessica Henwick and Madelyn Cline.
In addition to the core cast, however, Glass Onion also featured a number of high-profile celebrity cameos.
While most of these were hard to miss, there was one secret cameo that only came to light after the filmmakers gave it away.
Here’s a rundown of all the celebrity cameos in the film...

Grammy® Award-winner Falu Shah aka Falu is going to be playing her first India tour since she made history by receiving the prestigious gramophone for the Best Children’s Album (A Colorful World) earlier this year. Her victory is momentous because it marks the first time that an Indian woman – born, raised and musically trained in India – has won a Grammy® in this category.

The knives — and detective Benoit Blanc — are ready to come out this Thanksgiving. The full-length trailer for “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” has been released by Netflix.
The film is a followup to Rian Johnson’s 2019 box office hit “Knives Out,” a whodunnit murder mystery throwback starring Daniel Craig as Blanc, a brilliant if eccentric private investigator with a sharp mind and heavy southern drawl. Johnson once again writes and directs “Glass Onion,” which brings Craig back but jettisons the original film’s ensemble and New England setting for an entirely new mystery. This time, the action is set in Greece, where tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) invites his entourage of employees and friends to a private island, where in-group tensions quickly spiral into a murder for Blanc to solve. Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista play the main suspects,...

It’s a banner year for Oscar-winning Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir (“Joker”), who could make history as the first woman to be nominated twice in the same season for Best Picture contenders “TÁR” (Focus Features) and “Women Talking” (UA). Both films focus on difficult subjects like power, abuse, and identity, and take the composer in varied musical directions. Her lyrical, guitar-driven score for “Women Talking” serves its purpose well in channeling a sense of hope for the traumatized Mennonite women at the center of Sarah Polley’s film, while her meta score for Todd Field’s psychological drama about the world of classical music represents Guðnadóttir’s most personal work to date.
In “TÁR,” renowned conductor Lydia Tàr (Cate Blanchett) is forced to confront her personal demons (including accusations of sexual abuse) while rehearsing Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 5 and Edward Elgar’s under-appreciated Cello Concerto in E Minor with the Berlin Philharmonic.

Joel Martinez, best known as The Kid Mero, appeared on SiriusXM’s “Basic!” podcast and broke his silence on ending his longtime partnership with Desus Nice (real name Daniel Baker). The two gained popularity with their “Bodega Boys” podcast, which launched in 2015, and then became late-night staples with their Showtime series “Desus & Mero.” Fans were shocked when the network announced last month that “Desus & Mero” was abruptly ending after four seasons.
“Desus and I had discussed pursuing separate interests over a year prior to the show coming to an end and that conversation solidified us in signing overall agreements that recognized our intent to operate independent of one another,” Mero said on the podcast. “As far back as June of last year we were both pitching or looking to join existing projects as individuals.”

Desus and Mero shocked the comedy world this week when they abruptly announced that they would no longer be working together on any creative projects. Many casual viewers of their Showtime series felt blindsided by the news, though diehard fans of the duo had suspected something was up due to passive aggressive social media activity.
But a new report from Puck gives the clearest explanation yet for why the two comedians decided to end their hit show and podcasting empire. According to five sources, the rift between Desus Nice and The Kid Mero stemmed from an argument about their longtime manager Victor Lopez.
Lopez had backed their career from the start, and was also credited as a producer on their Showtime series. But the cable network allegedly requested that Lopez stop working on the show due to accusations that he behaved abusively toward employees. According to the report, Desus agreed...

Desus & Mero are calling it quits.
It comes after the pair returned for the fourth season of their Showtime series in March. However, the fourth season saw the duo cut their on-screen time in half, going weekly rather than twice a week.
It comes after there was much speculation on social media that the pair had fallen out.
The final episode of their show aired on June 23.

John Williams has hinted that “Indiana Jones 5” might be his last film. The legendary musician and Oscar-winning composer behind the scores for “Jaws” (1976), “Star Wars” (1977), “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (1982) and more teased the news in an interview with Associated Press, “At the moment I’m working on ‘Indiana Jones 5,’ which Harrison Ford — who’s quite a bit younger than I am — I think has announced will be his last film. So, I thought: If Harrison can do it, then perhaps I can, also.”
Williams, 90, pointed to the six-month commitment often required by blockbuster films. He said, “At this point in life, [it’s] a long commitment to me.” But five-time Oscar winner Williams made it clear that he wasn’t going to close the door on music. He said, “I don’t want to be seen as categorically eliminating any activity.”

YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki and Microsoft chief Satya Nadella were skedded to join 2,500 politicians, business and nonprofit leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland this week as the annual gathering kneecapped by Covid is back in person. It reconvenes, a bit subdued, at a critical moment with the world staggering under food scarcity, raging fuel prices and war.
There’s usually a sprinkling of snow on the pines at the tony mountain resort, about a seven-hour drive from the Cannes Film Festival. The showbiz presence is also scant at an event that over the years has hosted Hollywood and music royalty like Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie, Charlize Theron, Sharon Stone, Goldie Hawn, Bono, Peter Gabriel and Will.I.Am.
Davos is the place where assembled dignitaries tittered and booed a boastful speech by former President Donald Trump in 2018, but weren’t laughing when he returned in 2020. In 2021, the event was virtual.

John Williams turns 90 years old on Feb. 8. And the world’s most famous film composer shows no signs of slowing down.
The five-time Oscar winner, creator of many of the most well-known movie themes of all time — everything from “Jaws” and “Star Wars” to “E.T.” and “Harry Potter” — is finishing work on two new film scores and, Covid permitting, plans to conduct concerts with at least five orchestras between April and November.
Commemorating Williams’ nonagenarian status is the release of “John Williams: The Berlin Concert,” a two-disc Deutsche Grammophon set recorded during the composer’s Oct. 14-16 concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic.
The 93-minute collection includes many of Williams’ familiar signature tunes — “Star Wars,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Jurassic Park,” “Superman” — plus a few less familiar pieces, including his theme for “Solo: A Star Wars Story” and his moving, non-film “Elegy for Cello and Orchestra.”

NBC courted millennial and Gen-z demographics with its New Year’s Eve centerpiece, “Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party, Hosted by Miley Cyrus and Pete Davidson.” The live special aired Friday, Dec. 31 from 10:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. Et on NBC, with a livestream on Peacock.
The Miami-based event opened with Davidson and Cyrus rapping a lengthy parody version of Will Smith’s “Miami,” with Davidson joking that Bill Cosby and Kevin Spacey might show up to celebrate. Shots of fans moving their masks to the side to vape in the crowd immediately followed, setting the tone for the night.
After a short joint monologue with jokes about Covid and crying along to Cyrus’ songs (who hasn’t?!), the duo introduced an upbeat performance of “Tap In” and “Icy Chain” from Saweetie, complete with masked backup dancers. The music continued with a quick transition to Anitta performing “Faking Love,...

Washington, D.C. — To the delight of a standing-room-only audience that included the First Family, the Kennedy Center Honors paid hearty tribute on Sunday night to actor-singer Bette Midler, opera bass-baritone Justino Diaz, Motown founder Berry Gordy, “Saturday Night Live” honcho Lorne Michaels and singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell.
The event, last staged before a live audience in pre-covid 2020, had been conspicuously ignored by former President Donald Trump following criticism from two honorees in 2017. By contrast, President Joe Biden happily reinstated the tradition of hosting honorees at the White House before attending the production. He and First Lady Jill Biden were joined by Vice President Kamala Harris and husband Douglas Emhoff.
The wait by audiences was fully rewarded as the 44-year-old Honors program delivered a seemingly nonstop parade of A-list participants offering heartfelt tributes and rousing entertainment for the honorees gazing down from the president’s box. The show will air Dec.

Editor’s note: One in a series of stories tied to the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
Tomorrow’s 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks also marks the 20th anniversary of the somber annual ceremony commemorating the lives lost at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and aboard Flight 93.
The idea came from Michael Bloomberg who, shortly after being sworn in as mayor of New York on January 1, 2002, set out to create an annual commemoration. Upon recommendation by Jeffery Katzenberg, Bloomberg’s Deputy Mayor, Patti Harris, invited veteran live event producer-director Don Mischer to come to New York and meet with the mayor about helping to create the event. Mischer and fellow producer David Goldberg have been helming the commemoration ceremony since its inception.
“It wasn’t easy – there was no precedent for it. Yet through time, this commemoration has become increasingly important to the families of those we lost on that tragic day,...

It seemed inevitable that Weezer would contribute a track to The Metallica Blacklist. An anniversary album for a heavy metal band? Check. A compilation featuring covers by 54 different artists? Check. The chance to perform “Enter Sandman,” arguably the most famous Metallica song? Check, check, check.

St. Vincent has contributed a cover of Metallica’s “Sad But True” to The Metallica Blacklist, a tribute album celebrating the 30th anniversary of the band’s classic LP The Black Album.
Annie Clark’s “Sad But True” rendition takes the melody of the Metallica track and channels it through her angular art-rock, with industrial-sounding guitar and a demonic vocal filter on her voice.
All in all, The Metallica Blacklist will feature 53 different covers of Black Album songs and benefit 52 charities, all chosen by the artists who contributed to the record.
