The trailer for Willie Nelson & Family, the four-part documentary by directors Thom Zimny and Oren Moverman, offers a glimpse of the colorful life of the Red Headed Stranger.
The clip features some of the rare archival clips that anchor the film, including images of Nelson playing his guitar Trigger, hanging with fellow musicians, and even falling into an inflatable pool backstage at a festival. There’s also loads of footage of Nelson onstage with his Family Band, including his sister Bobbie Nelson, who died in 2022.

The Grammy for Best New Artist goes to a musician who had a major breakthrough during the eligibility period. Breakthroughs are subjective, though, so the eligibility requirements and restrictions have changed over time as the industry has evolved. Scroll down to see our odds for 2023, which are based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. Check back in as our odds change throughout the season.
“New” is in the eye of the beholder, but the 2023 Grammy rules and guidelines state, “This category recognizes an artist whose eligibility-year release(s) achieved a breakthrough into the public consciousness and notably impacted the musical landscape.” An artist must have released five singles or one album as a minimum requirement for eligibility. There is no maximum eligibility limit, but the National Screening Committee may disqualify an artist if they determine the artist achieved their breakthrough in a previous year. Additionally, an artist can...

These days everything and everyone is “iconic.” But here, at the center of five rich and unrushed episodes, is the real deal. As he approaches his 90th birthday, the composer of such immortal numbers as “Crazy,” “Night Life” and “On the Road Again” is still writing songs, still playing to concert crowds. Delving into the incomparable songbook, directors Thom Zimny and Oren Moverman show how Willie Nelson broke the country mold and transcended genre boxes, again and again. Their authorized biography — the musician’s wife and his manager are executive producers — is a love letter, to be sure, and like Nelson himself it doesn’t dwell on negativity, but there’s nothing simplistic or naive about it. Willie Nelson & Family is a portrait of a man who has made music and lived life on his own terms, in good times and bad.

Every once in a while, the Grammys will make a pick that is instantly polarizing, and one of the best examples is Bon Iver’s Best New Artist win in 2012. To many, the win showed how the Grammys might choose quality and artistry over sales. But to others, the win might’ve represented the Grammys’ persistent bias against hip-hop artists and disrespect towards the genre. How exactly did Bon Iver even win, though?
While Bon Iver, a musical project led by singer-songwriter Justin Vernon, won in 2012, the band was far from new by that time. Bon Iver’s debut record, “For Emma, Forever Ago,” was released independently in 2007, slowly but surely building enough of a fan base to warrant an indie label to sign the band and give the album a proper release in 2008. The band then started to gain popularity in indie circles, leading to collaborations with St. Vincent and,...

Allison Moorer’s son John Henry was playing in a New York City park in 2019 when he climbed an old, squeaky glider and began stomping his foot to its rhythm, then singing along. Using video of John Henry’s instinctive performance that his teacher had sent, Moorer’s longtime musical collaborator Kenny Greenberg created a loop while she crafted a hypnotic, soaring anthem to accompany it.

The Wallflowers have released another new song, “Who’s That Man Walking ‘Round My Garden,” from their upcoming album, Exit Wounds.
“Who’s That Man Walking ‘Round My Garden” is a bright and punchy rocker that finds Jakob Dylan telling the tale of a hard-working man who seems to grow increasingly paranoid about — as the title suggests — a strange man wandering around his garden. “I keep out of your roses and I expect the same,” Dylan sings. “Next hole you dig gonna be your grave/Call me a doctor and...

Will Grammys reject hip-hop for Best New Artist again? Phoebe Bridgers may upset Megan Thee Stallion
The Grammys have a pretty shoddy track record when it comes to awarding hip-hop artists outside of their designated genre categories. But this year it looks like Megan Thee Stallion will be a rare rapper to win Best New Artist. Could Grammy bias strike again, though? According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, the artist she most has to worry about is Phoebe Bridgers.

2019 was a huge year for new artists with Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X and Lizzo ruling the charts and then taking over the Grammys. Eilish ended up sweeping the awards, but this year’s race looks much more wide open. And now you can predict the nominees and winner here in our predictions center.
Best New Artist at the Grammys is often the hardest category to pin down due to changing standards for who actually qualifies as a new artist. In the past you’d see genuine newcomers like Mariah Carey and LeAnn Rimes winning for their first year in the public eye. But then Lauryn Hill won the award for her solo debut even after winning Grammys as a member of The Fugees, and Shelby Lynne took home the award after releasing six albums.

At a January photo shoot for the cover of her self-titled new album, Shelby Lynne was instructed by renowned photographer Amanda Demme to pull the collar of her white turtleneck up over her mouth and nose, never expecting that bit of artistic inspiration would result in an image that’s both striking and unfortunate in its timeliness. Yet, for a mercurial artist who had more than a decade of making music behind her when she won a Best New Artist Grammy in 2001, the creative process has routinely yielded serendipitous results.

Shelby Lynne offers a taste of vintage Muscle Shoals pop soul in the sparkling and romantic “Don’t Even Believe in Love,” a cut from her forthcoming self-titled album. A quintessential study in contradictions, Lynne proclaims herself incredulous at the notion of romance even as she finds herself powerless against it. With a warm yet aching vocal at the heart of the track, the singer resigns herself to the idea that there could be something to this whole thing after all.

But it’s true: For many years, the Tulsa native has been making beats on electronic drum machines “almost every day.”

Long before the hipster hordes began their annual passage to the Palm Springs area for the Coachella festival 19 years ago, the area offered a swinging, closer alternative to Las Vegas. Home-away-from-home to the likes of vacationing Rat Packers Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, as well as Elvis’ honeymoon house with Priscilla and Colonel Parker’s nearby digs, the desert enclave has been a haven from Hollywood for those seeking respite in the sun and heat. That legacy remains to this day in local streets named after the likes of former residents Bob Hope, Dinah Shore and Gene Autry.
Veteran industry publicist Bob Merlis, who bought the first of his three Palm Springs homes in 2003, explains the town first attracted vacationing celebrities with the so-called “two-hour rule,” the film studios’ requirement its stars stay that close to L.A. for any possible reshoots, which effectively eliminated Las Vegas or Hawaii as destinations.

Rickie Lee may not have had as gigantic a Billboard career following her Best New Artist win as some of the other stars here, but her debut album is such an assured, unpretentiously poetic, rich listening experience. “Chuck E.’s in Love” and “Young Blood” are whimsical and catchy while “Night Train” and “The Last Chance Texaco” are crackling, despairing portraits. We asked for fresh, modern music on Season 12 of American Idol, and executive producer Nigel Lythgoe has responded with…the Burt Bacharach/ Hal David Songbook!
[Insert Sound of Crickets Here]
Ah well, at least the second theme for Top 6 Week — during which the contestants will each cover two songs apiece — is “The Song I Wish I’d Written.” That should yield some recent, not-done-to-death, edgy and/or unexpected material, as long as there’s not some heinous fine print that turns it into ”The Song I Wish I’d Written (From the List of 11 Songs That Uncle Nigel Bothered to Clear).”

Sir Ian McKellen came out of the closet in 1988, in his 40s. But he says while it's wonderful to be liberated, being in the closet helped make him a better actor. “There was no Graham Norton on the television at that time, no gay MPs, no-one talking about gay rights on the radio. So I dealt with it my trying to cut that part of myself off, to hide myself, to choke a part of me. When you are made to feel you are so wrong for being who you are, that’s what you do. I think that’s why so many great British actors are gay - we spent so long pretending to be straight, to be someone else, that eventually we became very good at it.”

Her latest album may have been titled "Revelation Road," but Shelby Lynne has always been tight-lipped about discussing her personal life in public -- until now, that is.
The 44-year-old country star recently sat down with The Boot writer Stephen L. Betts in what just may be her most intimate interview yet, even touching on her sexuality which has been the subject of rampant media and fan speculation.
After Betts told the famously private Lynne that he was gay, the singer noted:
"I've been around the world and back so many times, I think everybody's gay. Everybody's a little gay. As far as my personal life, I don't go into details because that's all I've got. With the person that I allow out in the music, that's plenty.
But I am secure enough to say that of all of my relationships, I've covered the boundaries. [laughs] I don't think there's any...

Simon Cowell might just be a genius. An hour into Wednesday night’s X Factor episode, all I could think was “Just an hour and change till the series premiere of Nashville!”
A mere 45 minutes later, however, the state of my mental health rested entirely in the fates of a lady rapper from Flint, Mi, who fancies a sequined eyepatch; a trio of Texas sisters who look like they’ve been perpetually trapped inside a tampon ad; five (possibly six) teenage boys glued together by Simon Cowell’s sweat and Marc Anthony’s tears (it’s hard to keep count...

Country singer Shelby Lynne has a voice that sounds like heaven, and a family history that has echoes of that other place. In 1986, when she was just 17, Lynne’s father shot and killed her mother before taking his own life. Shelby and her younger sister (the singer Allison Moorer) were nearby when it happened. Lynne’s song “Heaven’s Only Days Down The Road,” which she performed memorably at the WSJ Cafe, explored the family tragedy from her father’s perspective.

We take a look at both the 'actual' and 'bizarro' Grammys (and try to pick some winners) in Bigger Than The Sound.

Last year, when the Arcade Fire shocked everybody (especially Dog the Bounty Hunter) by winning Album of the Year at the Grammys, it set in motion a chain of events that culminated in one rather troubling realization: Perhaps everything has changed.
I say troubling because, really, the Grammys have never been cool (and there is something like five decades of empirical evidence to back up that claim), and voters bestowing the night's top award on an indie act — instead of Eminem, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, each of whom were also nominated — was a hip, hip move. So it stood to reason that, if one of the stuffiest of award shows could get with the times, then perhaps everyone could. Perhaps...

Singer-songwriter Shelby Lynne says “The last thing I want to be is ordinary, man.”
The Grammy-winning performer stopped by the WSJ Cafe to perform some acoustic songs and talk about her most recent album, “Revelation Road.” Lynne has a reputation for being ornery and brilliant. She lived up to her billing. “I’m probably the most country person you’ve ever met,” she declared at one point. Watch the clip.

Grammy-winning country singer Shelby Lynne’s new album “Revelation Road” is perhaps her most personal, delving deep into her family history.
“I just approached it like wanting to write some killer songs,” Lynne said in an interview for the WSJ Cafe, the Journal’s acoustic music showcase. “And emotionally whatever comes my way I write about it. I’m not afraid of my emotions no matter what they are. And you know, I feel lucky because I’m not afraid.

There are many reasons people love to bash the Grammys, but one of the most frequent punching bags is the Best New Artist category.
Whether it goes to someone music fans have never heard of (2010's Esperanza Spalding), an act who's been around forever (2001's Shelby Lynne), or one that even at his or her peak seemed unworthy at best (notorious 1981 flash-in-the-pan Christopher Cross), Best New Artist is a perennial head-scratcher.
By Recording Academy rules, the award is for a musician or band who releases an album during the year of eligibility that establishes their "public identity" as an artist. That doesn't mean it's their first album or that they suddenly appeared on the scene just that year, because, really, no act just materializes out of...

Even before the cameras started rolling at a recent interview, Shelby Lynne had something to say.
Shortly after taking her seat for a video interview for the WSJ Cafe, the acclaimed country singer- songwriter announced that the chairs in the studio were arranged incorrectly. “Well, I’ll tell you first off what’s wrong with this setup,” she declared. She wanted to be able to face her interviewer.
On her most recent album, “Revelation Road,” Lynne also looked to take control.
