Equally atmospheric in strikingly different ways, the living dead and prom make for an awesome, creepy combination (see Gregg Bishop's Dance of the Dead), and they could come together once again via the in-the-works Zombie Prom feature film.
Variety reports that a feature film adaptation of the Zombie Prom musical is in development. The movie and TV rights to the horror comedy play that made its debut in 1993 have been picked up by Michael J. Roth and Steve Longi.
Vince Marcello, who wrote and directed the 2006 short film adaptation of Zombie Prom, will direct the full-length feature from a screenplay he'll write with creative collaborator Mark Landry (the duo co-penned Disney's Teen Beach Movie).
Similar to Creepshow, Zombie Prom was inspired by EC Comics from the 1950s. For those unfamiliar with the off-Broadway play and its short film adaptation (which co-starred RuPaul as Miss Strict), here's the short's official synopsis (via zombiepromthemovie.

Exclusive: Mel Gibson is in talks to take on directing duties on Hacksaw Ridge, based on the true story of Desmond T Doss, the first conscientious objector in U.S. history to win the Congressional Medal of Honor. Andrew Garfield is also in discussions to play the lead role.
Doss was a U.S. Army medic who served in World War II during the Battle of Okinawa and refused to kill. President Truman awarded him the Medal of Honor for saving so many lives.
This is not a done deal yet, and Deadline understands that talks are moving forward delicately and slowly. If Gibson does step back into the director’s chair, the subject matter would seem to suit his tastes to a tee. Throughout his career in front of and behind the camera, Gibson has shown an abiding fascination with protagonists prepared to suffer for their principles but ultimately prevailing over hardship.

All-purpose man Aaron Schneider — his credits range from director, to editor, to cinematographer and beyond — won the Best Short Film, Live Action Oscar in 2004 for Two Soldiers, but, for all intents and purposes, he didn’t truly burst onto the scene until 2009′s acclaimed Get Low, his feature-length directorial debut. At the time, many speculated that this film would bring Robert Duvall (and perhaps even Bill Murray in peak supporting form) his first Oscar nomination of the new century.
Alas, though, the film fell through the Academy cracks, probably in most part due to the film’s middle-of-the-year theatrical run — a time frame in which a subdued, quiet character study like this one is especially vulnerable to being overshadowed by prestige titles later in the year. Nevertheless, Schneider proved his Oscar was no fluke, creating a film that, despite, I’d argue, an uninventive screenplay, managed to survive on crisp...

Cannes -- Dimension Films is going sumo.
The company has acquired English-language remake rights to Israeli sumo wrestling pic "A Matter of Size."
The film, which made its debut at Tribeca last month, centers on an overweight Israeli restaurant employee who is turned on to the world of sumo wrestling by several co-workers at the Japanese eatery where he works, and discovers his weight can actually be an advantage.
The comedy-drama was a breakout among attendees and media at the New York fest.
Dimension topper Bob Weinstein called the film "touching and funny" and "a relatable story that will translate for American audiences."
David Permut will produce the remake, with Steve Longi and Neil Cohen co-producing.
The movie continues a renaissance of sorts for Israeli remakes. Miramax will soon release John Madden-directed "The Debt" and Overture is developing dark comedy "92 Minutes;" both projects are based on Israeli pictures.
