Diana, The Musical begins its Act II with the shirtless, well-toned actor portraying the princess’ studly consort James Hewitt doing his best Urban Cowboy riding-the-bull impression, much to the dirty-dancing delight of the smitten royal.
Finally, you think, Diana has fully embraced itself, director Christopher Ashley has rediscovered the campy aesthetic that served him so well from Jeffrey to The Rocky Horror Show and hope may not be entirely lost. But then the pink-bedecked romance novelist Barbara Cartland (don’t ask) stops the action to announce that she just made up that steamy bit, and the ripped stable boy covers up his abs and Diana sinks back to its high-decibel mediocrity.
By now you’ve probably read, heard or seen for yourself, via Netflix, just how deliciously bad Diana is, but the truth isn’t quite so much fun. Diana, opening tonight on Broadway at the Longacre Theatre, is not a so-bad-it’s-good disaster.

Exclusive Broadway’s Diana: The Musical will launch a new ad campaign for the upcoming return with in-character cast portraits shot by Broadway photographer Matthew Murphy. See below for Deadline’s exclusive first look at Jeanna de Waal as Princess Diana re-creating one of the Princess’ most iconic styles: the famous “Elvis” dress of 1989.
Diana resumes on November 2 at the Longacre Theatre, a month after the Oct. 1 premiere on Netflix of a special filmed presentation. The Broadway production, with book and lyrics by Joe Dipietro, music and lyrics by David Bryan and direction by Christopher Ashley, had started previews on March 2, 2020, with a planned opening night later that month canceled following the industrywide Covid pandemic shutdown.

Paul Huntley, the celebrated wigmaker for film, stage and television who provided Dustin Hoffman with the coif that transformed the actor into Tootsie and did the same decades later for when Santino Fontana originated the role in a Broadway musical, died this morning at his London home following a short illness. He was 89.
His death was announced in a post today on his Instagram page.
During his more than five-decade career, he helped give the felines of Cats their sheen, topped Patti LuPone’s Evita with the now famous blonde bun and styled the signature black and white job Glenn Close wore as Cruella de Vil in 101 Dalmations.
Huntley, who moved back to his native London recently from his longtime Manhattan home, retired earlier this year when Broadway’s Covid pandemic shutdown halted his professional opportunities, and after becoming bedridden following a fall at his Upper West Side home. His...

Chicago will return to Broadway just in time for its 25th anniversary: The musical is set to reopen at the Ambassador Theatre on Tuesday, September 14.
The Kander-Ebb-Fosse musical becomes the third Broadway production to set its reopening since New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday that theaters could reopen in September at 100% capacity. Producers Barry & Fran Weissler announced today that tickets are now on sale for the Tony Award-winning Chicago.
As with The Phantom of the Opera and Six – the two musicals that announced their Fall returns earlier this week – the reopening of Chicago is subject to the approval of the NY State Department of Health and the Governor.
In their announcement today, the Weisslers noted, “The approval of the Department of Health and the Governor will be based on the continuing growth of the fully vaccinated population, coupled with an ongoing decline in total Covid 19 cases and positivity rates.

Producers of Broadway’s Tony-nominated Beetlejuice said Monday that the comedic musical based on Tim Burton’s 1988 cult movie will play its final performance at the Winter Garden Theatre on June 6. A national tour is being mounted to kick off in fall 2021.
Beetlejuice the musical opened April 25, 2019 and was nominated for eight Tonys including Best Musical. It just broke the eight-performance house record at the Winter Garden during Thanksgiving week with $1,589,839, taking the crown from School of Rock ($1.506M in 2015).
Alex Timbers directed the musical which featured an original score by Eddie Perfect, and book by Scott Brown and Anthony King. It centered on Lydia Deetz (played by Winona Rider in the movie and Sophia Anne Caruso on Broadway), the unusual teenager whose life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and Beetlejuice (Tony nominee Alex Brightman), a demon with a thing for stripes and his own ideas...

Plenty of attention is paid to the top races and acting categories at the Tony Awards. But if you are looking to do well in our prediction contest, you will also have to make smart decisions in the below-the-line categories as well. The four design categories often trip up Tony pundits, especially when there is no one show predicted to sweep. There is no single such juggernaut this season, which means upsets and surprises are likely. To provide some help with these tough categories, take a look at the analysis below before you make any final predictions.
Scenic Design
Flip a coin, because “Hadestown” and “Beetlejuice” are locked in a neck and neck race here. My gut says David Korins will win for having the “most” scenic design of any musical this season for “Beetlejuice.” It’s an immense set with moving parts, that perfectly captures a twisted Tim Burton vibe while keeping things fresh.

Out of all the nominees spread across the 26 categories at the 2018 Tony Awards, 20 of them stand out as particularly noteworthy. Check out the complete list of nominations here.
The following Broadway productions from this past season were completely shut out by the nominating committee: “Head Over Heels,” “Straight White Men,” “Pretty Woman,” “The Nap,” “The Lifespan of a Fact,” “American Son,” and “True West.”
This year marks the second time this decade that the category of Best Musical consisted of five nominees, the first being in 2016. It’s also the third time for both Best Play (which had five nominees in 2014 and 2018) and Best Play Revival (which had five nominees in 2016 and 2018). And this year marks the fourth instance when the category of Best Musical Revival had only two nominees; the previous times were in 1995, 2002, and 2011.

Maybe if they’d said it a fourth time. Three times – “Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice!” – summons to life the stripe-coated, fright-wigged demon that made a superstar of Michael Keaton way back when. Could a fourth have magically conjured that extra something needed to transform Broadway’s Beetlejuice into something beyond the realm of good enough?
Directed by the busy and talented Alex Timbers, a long-in-the-making musical comedy Beetlejuice, based, faithfully if not enough, on Tim Burton’s 1988 film opens tonight at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre. There’s plenty worth a haunt here, from David Korins’ off-kilter spook house set to Alex Brightman’s raspy-voiced title performance and, most of all, the deliriously gorgeous singing of young Sophia Anne Caruso, and it all comes within reasonable reach of exorcising the bad vibes that attached themselves to the production during its pre-Broadway run in Washington D.

We’ve all had that moment of genius, usually while getting stuck on TCM, when the brilliant idea reveals itself to us: This film really deserves a remake, an update stripped of archaic notions or bad hair and polished to a shiny modern sheen. Some movies all but demand it. Tootsie isn’t one. Sydney Pollack’s 1982 film starring Dustin Hoffman seems so perfectly of its time – right down to the blissful ignorance of its unexamined mansplaining – that any fiddling would seem as unnecessary as spray tan on a president.
You’ll have just enough time during the false-start opening moments of director Scott Ellis’ wonderful new Tootsie to ponder such things, and then the musical and its star Santino Fontana grab hold and don’t let go. It’s not without a few runs in its stockings, but this Tootsie is a delight, a not-quite-blind date that plays out...

Let’s hear it for Tootsie, the laugh-out-loud funniest musical of the Broadway season. Yes, it’s another tune-filled spin on a hit movie — Pretty Woman, King Kong, the list goes on. But this one is actually good — hell, better than good, it’s musical-comedy heaven. Using the beloved 1982 movie with Dustin Hoffman as a launching pad, the singing-dancing Tootsie still features an unemployed asshole of an actor who has to dress up as a woman to land a part. But the film’s casual sexism (it...

Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures’ brewing musical adaptation of “Beetlejuice” has mapped out its road to Broadway, locking in a world premiere run at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C. in October.
An adaptation of the 1988 Warner Bros. comedy that starred Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder, “Beetlejuice” has music and lyrics by Eddie Perfect, the Australian actor-writer-composer who’s also at work on the musical version of “King Kong,” and book by Scott Brown and Anthony King (“Broad City”). Alex Timbers (“Rocky,” “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson”) directs, with choreography by Connor Gallagher (“The Robber Bridegroom”).

There are already lots of good interviews with Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) costume designer Michael Kaplan on the internet (we recommend this one in particular), so for Clothes on Film we kept it brief and fresh. We caught up with Kaplan, who is also responsible for Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Star Trek (2009), Fight Club (1999) and Blade Runner (1982), for a little chat about what’s new for episode 8 of the ever evolving space saga.
Clothes on Film: Let’s kick off by asking you about the best new costume in the film, the Elite Praetorian Guard…
Michael Kaplan: They are my favourite costumes too! I created a mood board with all the elements I was thinking about – mostly shiny, red, candy apple muscle cars from the early 1970s. We incorporated the bends, the vents, etc. I loved the final, completed design arrived at, but that was just the beginning.

We incorporated the bends, the vents, etc. I loved the final, completed design arrived at, but that was just the beginning.

The demon barber of Fleet Street has slashed his way to the front of the pack. The Off-Broadway League announced April 4 this year’s Lucille Lortel Awards nominees over 19 categories, and “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” (now playing at the Barrow Street Theatre) tied director Rachel Chavkin’s musical “Hadestown” for the most nominations with seven. The Sutton Foster-starring revival of “Sweet Charity” was close behind with six nominations. While these musical productions rounded out the top three spots, there was also a lot of love for several current Broadway transfers: “Dear Evan Hansen,” “Indecent,” and “Oslo”—the latter two with four nominations, including outstanding play and director, and “Dear Evan Hansen” with four, including outstanding musical and outstanding lead actor in a musical for Ben Platt. Read: How to Get Cast in an Off-Broadway Show The Off-Broadway League previously announced that costume designer William Ivey Long...

Tony-winning costume designer William Ivey Long has had a very prolific year in television. The man behind some of Broadway's most iconic looks took on two high-profile TV projects this year: Fox's highly regarded Grease: Live, and now the network's remake of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Both are based on films that are firmly implanted in the public consciousness—and in the case of Rocky Horror, recreated on a weekly basis all around the world at midnight showings. So one of the first things Long wanted to do with Rhps: Let's Do the Time Warp Again was pay tribute to the work of Sue Blane. "She is the great living British designer who designed Rocky Horror Picture Show," Long tells E!...

“The Wiz Live!” and “Grease Live!” both continued the live musical revival that began with NBC’s “The Sound of Music Live!” in 2013, which drew a remarkable 18.4 million viewers.
NBC’s “The Wiz,” though, was designed more like a Broadway show with an eye on Broadway sometime in the future. “The Wiz” “lent itself more to theatrical environments because of its familiarity, because it’s fantasy, and because of its musical performances,” said production designer Derek McLane (“The Sound of Music Live!” and NBC’s “Peter Pan Live!”).
McLane collaborated with”Hamilton” Tony-winning costume designer Paul Tazewell on an organic world with different looks made for the culture of today.
“Kansas is not a happy place for Dorothy and that’s reflected in its neutral palette,” McLane continued. “Munchkinland is predominantly orange with cylindrical buildings that evoke the Munchkins. Emerald City is like a modern club with different shades of green and electrified.

Robert De Niro has pretty much done it all in Hollywood and now he’s turning to theater to make his Broadway directorial debut. The actor, who starred and directed the 1993 film “A Bronx Tale,” will co-direct a new musical adaptation with stage veteran Jerry Zaks.
“A Bronx Tale: The Musical” is based on the one-man show written by Chazz Palminteri, which centered on his childhood on the streets of the New York neighborhood and his conflict between his father and a local Mob boss.

“It’s a Bronx boy’s dream come true for ‘A Bronx Tale, The Musical’ to move to Broadway!” Palminteri said in a statement. “It’s a great story and a great story can morph into many different forms – a one-man show, a movie and a now, a musical. We get the best of both worlds with De Niro having directed the film and Zaks having directed the one-man show. There are only three things you can do to an audience – make them laugh, make them cry or you can scare them. In ‘A Bronx Tale, The Musical’ we do all three.”
The musical made its debut in February at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse and received positive reviews. The Broadway show will be produced by Tommy Mottola, with the Dodgers (“Jersey Boys”) and De Niro’s Tribeca Productions.
Alan Menkin and lyricist Glenn Slater will compose the score. Palminteri will pen the book, set design is by Beowulf Boritt, costumes by William Ivey Long, and lighting by Howell Binkley, who just won his second Tony Award for “Hamilton.” Sergio Trujillo is in charge of choreography.

De Niro is also in negotiations to star in the Dimension Films comedy “The War With Grandpa,” about a young man who’s grandfather moves in and engages in a series of pranks meant to drive him out. Though, his gramps is also pretty good at pulling off tricks.
The production for “A Bronx Tale: The Musical” begins previews November 3 at the Longacre Theatre, with the official opening set for December 1.

Get ready for poodle skirts, bullet bras and major transformations when Grease: Live airs this Sunday. "We are making it very much of today. It's the '50s with grace notes," Grease: Live's Tony-winning costume designer William Ivey Long tells E! News. "For example, our high school is completely diverse. So that's different. That's actually, I think, the most important angle that's different." While the costumes you'll see will share plenty of DNA with their predecessors in the Grease film and stage musical, Long has updated the looks to make them feel a little more contemporary. "From my point of view, I'm making the [clothes] a little tighter. If you think about...

Some 17 Sally Bowleses painted their nails green and sang “Maybe This Time” for the Sam Mendes revisal of Cabaret that ran on Broadway from March 1998 (Natasha Richardson) through January 2004 (Susan Egan). No doubt the Roundabout, which mounted that revisal, as well as the current revival of the revisal, hopes to keep the Kit Kat Klub door revolving. They started this spring with Michelle Williams, who was thrillingly emotional in the part, and have now moved on to Emma Stone, who reportedly had been their first choice. Even aside from Stone’s commercial appeal, you can see why: With her extraordinary face and Mona Lisa smile, her huge celadon eyes and coppery bob, she arrives prepackaged with the kind of remote fascination a Sally Bowles needs. And indeed, she looks terrific as the none-too-bright young thing in William Ivey Long’s pastel frocks and diaphanous lingerie. What fun! you think as...
