For the past three years, the American Cinematheque has presented “Bleak Week,” an annual festival devoted to the greatest films ever made about the darkest side of humanity. This year, the festival will not only be unspooling in Los Angeles June 1 – 7 — with special guests including Al Pacino, Lynne Ramsay, Charlie Kaufman, and Karyn Kusama — but will travel to New York for the first time with a week of screenings at the historic Paris Theater starting June 9.
“We are honored to co-present ‘Bleak Week: New York’ in partnership with one of the most beautiful movie palaces in the world,” Cinematheque artistic director Grant Moninger told IndieWire. “This year, over 10,000 people will attend ‘Bleak Week: Year 3’ in Los Angeles, proving that audiences are hungry for such powerful and confrontational cinema. Many people thought they were alone in their desire to explore films with uncomfortable truths, but the truth is that they are part of a large community,...

Cillian Murphy first cut his teeth at the Corcadorca Theatre Company in his hometown of Cork, Ireland at the age of 20, where he nailed the audition for his first acting role in Enda Walsh’s “Disco Pigs” play. Murphy made enough of an impression to not only land the role for the theater part, but he also starred in the film adaptation years later. Although the movie wasn’t necessarily a renowned success, his performance caught the eye of Danny Boyle: the legendary filmmaker, then searching for a lead in his post-apocalyptic thriller, “28 Days Later.” That movie would significantly boost Murphy’s profile, earning him nominations for Best Newcomer at the Empire Awards and Breakthrough Male Performance at the MTV Movie Awards.
With 40 movies and 27 years to his career, Murphy seems to be progressing with each appearance, and his latest role was his biggest yet. As the titular...

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” is shaping up to be a career-defining role for Cillian Murphy. The longtime Nolan ensemble member stepped into a lead role in one of the auteur’s films for the first time, and his nuanced performance as atomic bomb inventor J. Robert Oppenheimer has made him an early Oscar frontrunner. You could even say that Oppenheimer was a role that Murphy was born to play.
As it turns out, Murphy came close to portraying the infamous nuclear physicist in another project nearly a decade ago. One of the most recent dramatizations of the Manhattan Project was the WGN TV series “Manhattan,” which featured Daniel London in a reoccurring role as Oppenheimer. In a new interview with Vanity Fair, showrunner Sam Shaw and writer Lila Byock revealed that they cast a wide net when searching for the right actor to play father of the atomic bomb. Other candidates included Beck,...

With a little help from "Barbie," "Oppenheimer" enjoyed a historic opening weekend at the box office, bringing in an impressive $82 million. Such success not only proved that Christopher Nolan is one of the all-time best box office bets, but that original ideas can still triumph despite not being based on long-standing IP. That is, unless you consider J. Robert Oppenheimer a kind of existing IP. The man who created the atomic bomb and changed our world forever was always going to command significant cultural awareness. In that sense, Nolan isn't operating entirely without the aid of audience familiarity.
Still, it's not as though the director's adaptation of Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin's biography, "American Prometheus," was ever going to have the same cultural caché as, say, Batman propelling its box office. Which just makes the success of "Oppenheimer" all the more impressive. And while much of that is...

Before Christian Bale landed the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” trilogy, the filmmaker screen-tested his “Oppenheimer” star Cillian Murphy. Both men have since admitted that Murphy was never a real threat to steal the part from Bale, and Murphy told GQ Magazine UK in a recent interview that it “was for the best” that Bale won the coveted role over him anyway.
“Yes, I think it was for the best because we got Christian Bale’s performance, which is a stunning interpretation of that role,” Murphy said. “I never considered myself as the right physical specimen for Batman. To me, it was always going to be Christian Bale.”
Nolan didn’t think Murphy was right for the part either, but he still screen-tested him for Batman so that executives at Warner Bros. could see what an amazing actor he was. The director wanted Murphy...

That man who would be Oppenheimer in Universal’s box office hit was also considered to play the world-changing scientist in a short-lived TV series about the race to build an atomic bomb.

Vox Lux, directed by Brady Corbet, stars Natalie Portman, Raffey Cassidy and Jude Law in a spiralling meteoric rise of a tragic musician that plays second fiddle to devastating story of innocence lost. Vox Lux is a vastly condensed and emotionally compacted feature swirling from nuanced social commentary to a barrage of unnerving foreboding in the perils of an eerie and unflinching exploration of crucible devolving societal manifestation.
There is so much to unpack here and much to unravel and explore in Corbet’s breakout feature. It is quite frankly daunting to fully comprehend. So … stopping a near-catastrophic act of truly grotesque biological warfare doesn’t seem that hard, right? Sure, you’ll need three precogs and a detective who knows how to do her job, but beyond that, it seems to be a matter of yelling at halfwit FBI agents and then knocking a beaker of skin-shriveling virus juice that looks more like cough syrup out of some random patsy’s hands. That said, our season finale (and very likely series finale, though Fox is treading lightly and stopping short of outright canceling the show — pray for a streaming deal?) delivered what it promised, however underdeveloped its otherwise-compelling stakes might have been: an ending that paid homage to the original story and wrapped the adventure with dignified and cinematic, if not seamless, flair. The cold open with Wally’s backstory was a solid move, considering Daniel London is one of the few on-camera...

Manhattan, Season 2, Episode 4, “Overlord”
Written by Alexander Woo
Directed by Christopher Misiano
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on Wgn
“If it helps to pretend you’re me, pretend. It’s what I do.” Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer
The first three episodes of Manhattan‘s second season have largely focused on the disappearance of Frank Winter. While they have all been outstanding, the narrative has felt a little fragmented without all the characters on the Hill together. In “Overlord,” the story is still split between the goings on at Los Alamos and the fate of Frank, but it ultimately brings the implosion team—and the narrative—back together in a satisfying fashion.
“Overlord” refers to the code name for the Allies’ D-Day invasion at Normandy, which serves as the backdrop for this episode. But it’s also a reference to science chief J. Robert Oppenheimer, who experiences a dangerous case of cold feet,...

A couple weeks ago, Fox decided to cut the episode order for the first season of Minority Report from 13 to 10 episodes. So, has the show been cancelled?
Set in Washington D.C. 2065, Minority Report follows Lara Vega (Meagan Good), a homicide detective who becomes connected with Dash (Stark Sands). He's a psychic "precog" who's haunted by images of future crimes and is on a mission to stop them from happening. The rest of the cast includes Nick Zano, Laura Regan, Wilmer Valderrama, Daniel London, Li Jun Li, Zhane Hall, and Tina Lifford.
The series debuted on September 21st to a 1.11 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.1 million viewers. That was a very disappointing debut, especially for a high profile series that was given a lot of promotion from the network. The ratings dropped nearly 20% in week two and then fell...

Geniuses aren't like you and me. It's not just that they know more, but that they see the world differently from us, or even from each other. You don't come up with the idea of splitting the atom, let alone the means to do it, if your thoughts bounce around your skull in the same pattern that someone else might use to build a house or calculate their taxes. TV has understood this, but has tended, particularly of late, to present all geniuses in a one autism spectrum disorder fits all package, when in fact there's far more variety and volatility even among the most wicked smart. "Manhattan," the excellent drama about the men and women who built the world's first atomic bomb, returns to Wgn America tonight at 9, and continues to understand genius's many different flavors. Once again, it captures the enormous creative possibilities that come from putting a...

It looks like Minority Report, the new Fox TV show, has moved a bit closer to being cancelled. It's been reported that the series' episode order has been cut, from 13 to 10 episodes. The show had a poor debut in the ratings last month and the numbers have been getting worse each week.

For a show about precognition, Minority Report has an impressive number of flashbacks and the second episode, "Mr. Nice Guy," begins with one. We see the three precogs back when they were still under government control. Their handler, Wally (Daniel London), is explaining to some government suit that each of the three has a distinctive personality and gift. Agatha (Laura Regan) becomes the person she predicts. As he explains, "It's like she leaves herself. Her brother's mind is an antenna, pulling in names, facts, information. And Dash can see the murders but doesn't have the information or ability to stop them." And so ends the part of the script writers refer to as "repeating the backstory for new viewers."...

One of the most intriguing upcoming new shows has to be Fox's small screen adaptation of Minority Report, so we were very interested to see what the cast and crew had to say about it at Comic-Con in San Diego earlier this month.

The TV follow-up to Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report movie is coming later this year, and you can see the first image here…
This might not be a huge surprise, but it’s still exciting news for fans of geeky TV – Fox has ordered a full season of the long-talked-about Minority Report TV series.
The show is a loose continuation of Steven Spielberg’s Tom Cruise-starring movie. In lieu of Cruise, the show focuses on a former precog (the crime predicting folk from the film) who is still struggling to adapt to life outside the system ten years after the events of the film.
The word around the web is that Spielberg was so impressed with Mark Mylod’s new take on the material that he has decided to sign up as an executive producer on the show.

Friday was a huge day for established, familiar properties. ABC kicked off the morning by picking up "Uncle Buck," which was followed by Fox's order for "The Frankenstein Code" and then quickly by CBS' series orders for "Rush Hour," "Limitless" and a "Criminal Minds" spinoff. In what I'm assuming will be Friday's last piece of big, breaking news -- famous last words -- Fox has given series orders to "Minority Report" and "Lucifer," based on the hit Steven Spielberg/Tom Cruise feature and the DC/Vertigo comic title respectively. Let's look at the details: "Minority Report" was written by Max Borenstein and directed by Mark Mylod and features Spielberg and Amblin Television among its producers. It's set 10 years after the end of the Pre-Crime unit in DC and three remaining pre-cogs are struggling to integrate back into society. One of them meets a helpful detective and is able to find...

Back in January, we reported that Fox had given a pilot order to their small-screen Minority Report sequel and over the past week, with production expected to begin soon, Fox has finalized its main cast for the upcoming sci-fi series. Stark Sands (Inside Llewyn Davis) and Meagan Good (Think Like A Man) have landed the lead roles with Sands playing the dual roles of Dash and Arthur, the two male Precogs, and Good playing Lara Vega, a detective haunted by her past, who will work with Dash to help him find a purpose for his gift. Laura Regan (Mad Men), Li Jun Li (Damages), and Daniel London (Minority Report) round out the rest of the cast with Regan playing Agatha, the Precog played by Samantha Morton in the original film, Li will play a CSI technician named Akeela, and London will reprise his role as Wally the Caretaker from the original 2002 film.

The TV follow-up to Minority Report has found its leads: Anchorman 2's Meagan Good and Inside Llewyn Davies' Stark Sands…
We recently heard that Daniel London would appear in the Minority Report series, reprising his role from the film as Wally the caretaker for the TV series set ten years after Tom Cruise brought the whole PreCrime system crashing down.
Now, we know who the two lead characters will be played by. They look a bit like this…
The lead role has long been listed as Detective Lara Vega, who we now know will be played by Meagan Good of Think Like A Man, Anchorman 2 and Brick. Her character is a detective who’s ‘not afraid to break a few rules.’ The action of the series will see her helping a former Precog Dash, who still needs help reintegrating into society ten years after the events of film.

Rather than spread the casting net a little wider in search for some actual twins, Fox have found a fella to play both for the upcoming Minority Report TV show, that will follow on from the 2002 film. EW have got the skinny that Stark Sands, through a good amount of camera work and clever jiggery-pokery will be taking the precognitive roles of twin brothers Arthur, and lead character, Dash.
Set ten years after the first film, Minority Report: The TV Show (definitely not the title), will see one party of the precognitives, Dash, struggle to block out his dark visions of the future. The burden will come as a blessing to a female detective that crosses paths with the gifted gent and will use him to find answers to her past, as well as crack a case every week or so.

Stark Sands ("Inside Llewyn Davis," "NYC 22") and Meagan Good ("Think Like a Man," "Anchorman: The Legend Continues") have scored the leading roles in Fox's TV series follow-up to the 2002 Spielberg sci-fi film "Minority Report". The series is set ten years after the end of the Precrime Division in the nation's capital.

Sands will take on the dual role of his identical twin brother Arthur, he joins a cast that includes Laura Regan as the third Precog Agatha along with Daniel London and Li Jun Li.
Kevin Falls ("The West Wing") will serve as show runner and Mark Mylod will direct the pilot. Max Borenstein ("Godzilla") penned the script and will executive produce.

One question about Fox's upcoming drama pilot "Minority Report" has been answered - they're happy to recast the main roles from the Spielberg film.
Deadline reports that Laura Regan ("They," "Mad Men") is set to take on the role of Agatha, the most gifted of the three pre-cogs, in the upcoming sci-fi procedural series set a decade after the end of the 2002 sci-fi feature.
In the series Dash, one of the three pre-cogs who were the key to the Precrime division in the film, now struggles to lead a 'normal' human life and remains haunted by visions of the future. He soon meets a detective, Lara Vega, who is haunted by her past who just might help him find a purpose to his gift.

A quick glance at the television guide of the future displays that there are a number of shows spawning from big screen efforts on the way. One such entry that shows a bit of promise is Minority Report, which has just hired Daniel London to reprise his role as skittish, flip-flop wearing Precog carer, Wally.
The original film – directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise – saw a future where murders could be stopped before they even occurred thanks to a trio of powerful clairvoyants, also known as Precogs. The show will be set ten years after the program was shut down by Cruise’s top copper and focus on one of the Precogs, Dash who is being haunted by visions of the future that set him on the path to police officer, Lara Vega, who believes this strange stranger could help her uncovering secrets from her past,...

Last month we told you that the TV adaptation of the Steven Spielberg classic Minority Report had found someone to helm its pilot episode in established TV director Mark Mylod. The series that will pick up 10 years after the sci-fi extravaganza has now added a familiar face from the original movie. Fox’s Minority Report TV series, based on the 2002 Steven Spielberg movie, has added two members to its cast, and one ought to be familiar to fans of the feature. While at this stage the show currently only has a pilot order – meaning it may not get ‘picked up’ for a full series – the cogs (ahem) are in motion to assemble a killer cast. One of the film’s original cast members, Daniel London, has signed on to reprise his role, and he will be joined by franchise newcomer Li Jun Li.
Per Deadline, London is back as Pre-Cog caretaker, Wally. In the movie, his character maintained an almost stifling relationship with the seers and also frequently came up against Tom Cruise’s John Anderton. As previously reported, the sequel series will pick up ten years after the events of the movie. With pre-Crime no longer an issue, Dash, one...

Original cast member Daniel London has joined the Minority Report TV show…
Here’s an interesting one – although we had already been told that the Minority Report TV series would follow on from the film itself, returning cast members from the 2002 film seemed a little unlikely. Now though, our doubts have been quelled, in the shape of Daniel London.
Mr London played Wally the caretaker in the original film, a minor character tasked with the important role of looking after the Precogs. When Tom Cruise’s John was named a murderer by the PreCrime system in the film, Wally bought him some vital time by delaying ringing the alarm. London also featured fleetingly in the Viper episode of Gotham recently.
Will this development lead to any further names from the original turning up? It’s hard to say, but the casting of London does suggest that the powers-that-be might be...

Gotham, Season 1, Episode 5, “Viper”
Written by Rebecca Perry Cutter
Directed by Tim Hunter
Airs Mondays at 8pm Et on Fox
Gotham has done fairly well, so far, at integrating its cases of the week with its overarching storyline, with last week’s “Arkham” being one of the most momentous episodes yet in moving the season narrative forward, but with “Viper”, the tandem plots fail to blend together with the same consistency. The campy concept of the Viper drug, which gives super strength to its victims before destroying their bone density, could’ve worked if only the writers had decided not to display the victims’ feats of strength with such poorly executed and cartoonish special effects. What Gotham has done well in previous episodes is present a campy idea with a truly gritty noir tone, but the way that these super powered victims are realized, they look more like they belong...

Wgn America is still very new to producing their original scripted series so it's hard to know what they consider a ratings success. Salem was renewed for a second season. Will the new Manhattan series be renewed as well or will it be cancelled? We'll have to wait and see.
